Hi,
I'm new to this forum so i'd like to say hello to everybody first
I have a g1 with the screen cracked. When I say the screen is cracked I mean that upper glass area; The lcd does not seem to be cracked in any way so there is no bleeding at all. Touch still works very well even in the cracked area.
I seem to have come across only 1 ebay auction that was selling a digitizer and everywere is absurdly expensive to buy. Any ideas where i can find one ? At 189$ i'm half way to buying a new phone tbh.
Also I saw in this forum that some people had the same problem and people told them that they would need to replace both lcd AND digitizer, however i clearly saw in the htc dream service manual that they are two separate parts with separate part numbers. Is there some particular reason for this ?
Just to clarify, can any tell me the order in which components are placed in the htc g1 ? Im assuming they are as follows:
Touch Screen Digitizer
LCD Screen
cover and hinge
in that order..Am I right in my assumption ?
Thanks,
Mewt
Bump. I would like to know as well.
Check it out:
This listing just got put up on eBay today. This guy has 50 digitizers for sale:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=230336383436
If you are sure the LCD is intact, you should just buy the Digitizer. The LCD can easily be seen by opening up the phone.
http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-T-MOBILE-GO...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50
I can confirm you can replace the digitizer WITHOUT replacing the lcd.
I just did it. A car ran over my G1 a while ago and I've been lurking on ebay ever since waiting for digitizers to be listed. With a new digitizer, a Torx screwdriver and about an hour I have just replaced the broken one and the new one works perfectly.
Of course that also means I now have a spare G1 since I bought another one in case I couldn't get a replacement.
I will be doing the same shortly.
Actually this is the best price I have found on a digitizer
http://www.perfectesell.com/gog1glscdico.html
Any tips on replacing the part? Does the phone have to come completely apart?
I can't buy from that buyer as he doesn't ship to Malta but thanks, now I know what I need to look for and will be doing so. Hope I can get my g1 working well again...I just hate trying to read messages with cracks in them
Thanks all for your replies
Its quite fiddly but as long as you have the manual you should be okay.
There's a few things tho. Page 23 doesn't really show you how to disconnect the camera very well. On the underside of the main board there is a connector like the one for the screen. It is released by flipping the paddle lever think 90 degrees down. Otherwise the camera connector gets pulled out when you remove the mainboard.
It should go without saying you don't need to disassemble the bottom "chin" part when you remove it. Oh and page 24 has an error, those aren't the 2 screws you need to remove, its 2 long ones, one is in the top right of that picture on page 24 the other is to the right of the one circled.

hey would you say the average person would be able to change the digitizer or do you have to be a handy man.. taking anybodys replys ONLY if you''ve done it
Well I guess I am the average person but then I've taken many a pc and laptop apart and put it back together again so maybe not...
There's nothing that requires great skill in it. As long as you're gentle, patient and careful (taking apart a G1 is like making love to a beautiful woman...). Keep track of what screws came from where and don't try and force anything.
Remember you need some torx head screwdrivers. but you can get these on ebay for very little.
I have to admit I feel a bit smug when I see forum posts from people who advise you sent it back to T-Mo and pay a $100+ excess for them to do it. As if!
Ah, my screen is just gently scratched, but it's annoying sometimes. I might look at into this if it gets any worse.
Just looking at the back of the screen when the G1 is open, it looks like I'd have to take the whole phone apart...are there guides I can look at?
Here is some sites that helped me out.
This is an easy to ready explanation to what you are looking at.

This is where I found the service manual a while back
http://www.intomobile.com/2008/12/18/dissect-your-t-mobile-g1-with-the-htc-dream-service-manual.html
This was where you can find the digitizer. (I dunno which one it is... but I think its the clearpad) only thing I could not find a match on part numbers anywhere
http://www.synaptics.com/solutions/products
And this is the address and Houston local number for HTC America. (i didnt check the number so i'm 72.34763% sure its right(just do a little social engineering to get to where you need to be.) )

same boat here. cracked digitizer. seems like the g1 is the only phone, for which you can't buy one.

hey i have a question i replace my digitizer but now the bottom part of the touch screen... closest to the menu button doesnt work. what do you think can be wrong
Pull it apart again using the service guide section 2.2.3 and make sure all connections have complete contact. If something is not sitting right the circuit may not be ringing out correctly. Once you have gone through all the steps 2.3.2(lcm assembly) and everything looks connected properly, assemble, reboot and test. If it is not fixed you may have a bad digitizer I'm hoping for the fact that most of your screen is working its just a connection problem.

When you reassembled what did you do about the tape and gaskets? Were you able to buy new or did you use something else? Thanks!

i'm willing to try replacing it myself as well and i was wondering how much your purchased your new digitizer for. would the one suggested earlier at this link: http://www.perfectesell.com/gog1glscdico.html be good? it seems a lot cheaper than other ones and i dont want to buy a faulty and cheap one that may not work as well or break. any other tips would be GREATLY appreciated. TIA!
Here's the correct page on the Perfectesell site:
http://www.perfectesell.com/htcgog1glscd.html
Same price ($65) as the ebay auction that ended.
I dunno what that $12.95 thing was... price doesn't seem right for glass, touch sensing wizardry

thanx i took it apart again and that fixed it... i have 2 more problems 1 major 1 not. i dont know but i normally got 3g service in my house and now i dont what could b the problem.
second is that the screen doesnt swivel smoothy as before
Ok this one goes out to all you cool smart guys out there. I currently have two mt4g's. One is working perfectly fine with the "bad screen", as they call it, and the other is bricked, or no it has a failed pu is what someone told me, but it has the "good screen".
Anyway while just minding my own business on the internet one day I came across a video which shows you how to replace a lcd screen in a mytouch 4G! I was hooked. I could do this I said, it looked so easy! Sure you need some patience, which I got btw. So I was determined to do this, even ordered the tools from repairsuniverse. So about the fourth time watching the tutorial I began to wonder if it would be possible to just swap motherboards instead of disassembling all the way to the screen. Mostly because I still need a heat gun so i could remove the digitized then lcd screen.
So i guess my question is will swapping motherboards solve the pu problem in the mytouch with the good screen? And while I got you here has anyone ever replaced there lcd screen?? Is it worth it??
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Yes, if you put the good motherboard in the case with good LCD, you'll get one good phone.
Thanks for the response! This will make the job so much easier
repair options
sorry to piggyback you post but i had a similar question....
a friend of mine is giving me their broken mytouch 4g. it was working perfect but then she dropped it on her kitchen tile (bottom right corner hit i'm told) and now it will not turn on at all.....no cracks or anything, just a scratch in the corner. she says she tried a new battery and tried plugging into AC but no lights, nothing.
i've taken apart enough phones so once I get it i'm not afraid to do some swapping of parts.
my question is, those of you who have worked on this model, any indication where you think would be the problem? i'm hoping the lcd/digitizer is fine since its not cracked but we'll see....and i figured maybe i would just need to do a motherboard swap worst case? is there any other components you think could be shot after the drop? from what i've been able to find its just the 1 main mother board , correct? (meaning there is not 2 parts)
thought MAYBE i'll get lucky after opening it up, and verifying all the cables that possible some cables got jarred loose and thats why it wont respond but not holding my breathe on that.
thanks for the help!
hey friends , my hd2 was working very well untill touch screen stopped responding to any touch .. i haven't dropped nor damaged it anyway , it just happened suddenly ..
i found someone said it may be digitizer ribbon related proplem so i did what he advised :
[ Press the top of the red button (when pushing on the top your pushing the ribbon).
Press the bottom of the red button thus releasing the stress on the ribbon.
Press the green button. ]
i got it working for sometime then after i press on the red key it stop working again ..
please can anyone help me to fix this proplem .. ?
I got the same problem
Hi guys,
I have the same problem with my LEO 512, each time I try to reboot the device (Long pressing the power button) the touch screen hangs, but the buttons working properly, and whenever I activate the device by pressing the power button, or rejecting a call with it also the screen hangs.
I think there is a short circuit between the power button and the screen.
Anyone has any idea what to do to fix this issue???
Thanks
good day, unfortunately is a defect hd2 the only thing to do is send it in for service or replace the touch, have just made my warranty is also changing the screen and putting touch screen no longer equal to the original but different. the screen much more crisp and bright and the touch with a stunning response

I agree with you, I already sent it to HTC service yesterday, and first thing came to his mind that they would replace the "screen" or the touch or "both" , but he will check the power button problem first.
By the way, I got link (unfortunately I will not be able to submit it as I'm still new to the forum) this would help you. It is in the "Touch screen won't work" under the "General HTC HD2 discussion" in "HTCHD2forum(.com)"...
Thanks

hey john , to which HTC branch you sent ?!
did he tell you that he can replace the digitizer only ?!!
& what about the cost ?!
also what is the important info. i can find in this forum ?
This is a common problem with the 512 HD2's. I have found that although some temporary fixes do help, such as using only the green button to wake the screen, and holding certain parts of the screen while pressing others do work in a pinch, but only a digitizer replacement will fix it permanently. The replacement digitizers are much better, and do not have the bug. Replacing the LCD with the newer one results in a much nicer picture.
Both of these parts can be found on eBay, and there are teardown videos on youtube to tell you how to replace them, saving you a fairly large amount of money if you are no longer under warranty.

Hi Needo,
I went to El Mohandeseen branch (Jovi Tronix), they have already replied me that they will have to replace the whole LCD screen with the digitizer, costing about 1,400 EGP (232$) which was a total loss for me .
Of course I refused, but thanks to "Cappii" who posted after you, I found the LCD screen with the digitzer in "ebay" which would cost about 475 EGP (78.5$) using "Edfa3ly.com service"!!!
A big thanks to you "Cappii"
I'm thinking of going to "Abd El Azeez street" first and check how much would it cost (if applicable), it would be faster than waiting for 2 to 4 weeks till I get the LCD screen from the US.
Wish you best of luck.

Anytime. If you do the repair yourself, make sure that you pay .attention to the connectors on the bottom of the main board. There are a few that are a little tricky. Overall, it's not an easy phone to repair, but it's a lot easier than iPhone 4's or HTC Arias.

Yes, I've watched how to disassemble and replace the touch screen videos on you tube before, I noticed that it is very complicated and tricky, but I like this kind of stuff, any way.

Thanks too much john , it's really great idea to use (edfa3ly.com) ..
also i've found someone can fix it for about 500 L.E (may be 400), they say he is expert with HTC & iPhone devices ..
if i repaired it myself , it will cost me about 300 L.E only , but with some risk as i heard that separating digitizer from touch screen can break it !
also i'll have to wait for about 2 or 3 weeks ..
i'm not sure about what i should do ..
what do you think ?!
& what will you do & why will you change LCD (i think the proplem is just related to digitizer ) & did you found it in " abd el aziz " ?!
& Thanks in advance sir

Hey Needo, What's up?
I didn't go yet to "Abdel Azeez street" but I'm willing to.
I prefer to have someone fix it for me; as it will be with less risk. But there is an advantage regarding getting the stuff from the US that you know they are brand new, not used.
I'm not expert in the hardware stuff, but this is the feedback I got from HTC that the whole LCD should be changed; this is why I need someone else to check it.
Could you please tell me more about this one you found, who can handle the HTC and I Phone???
Thanks my friend and wish you fix your phone soon (so do I )
Best regards,
John

sorry for being late in reply john ,
i sent it to this guy in " el srag mall " in shop called " Win Mac " he told me that he will change touch ( digitizer ) for 500 L.E in 2 days & he did it .. after i recieved it , it was working fairly good , but not like before .. then i tried to install WP7 , when it booted to welcome screen , found that i've no touch at all ..
returned back to WM 6.5 touch screen working , but not very properly .. tried to install NAND Android it gave me strange line of no.s & stuck at GO GO GO when i try to enter CWM ...
tried to boot into SD android Build , i got the same problem ..
so i decided to install WP7 again & sent it to him & told him about the problem , he told me to leave it & he'll fix it .. after 4 days i went to him & he told me that he tried to change digitizer for 2 times , but it's not working properly (in the best case , only the lower half of the screen got working) so he'll change LCD also ( the strange thing that he told me that i won't bey for that !!! & he will take my LCD instead ) ..
really i don't know if i should believe in what he say or not , but anyway i've nothing to do .. i'll wait to see what will he do !
what do you think ?!
Just wanted to chime in. I have heard various reports of having to change both the LCD and touch, although on my personal experience, the touch seems to fix it. Now, separating the LCD from the touch is a fairly simple process. Once the boards are removed, turn the unit over so that the touch and lcd are up. Heat the touch with a good hair dryer for about 3 minutes, and slowly lift with a plastic separator while its still very hot. Lift from the top, not the bottom.
There is a lot of tape on the bottomod the LCD. Heat LCD with the hair dryer, and slowly lift, keeping the frame flat on a table. If the frame warps, it will be next to impossible to reseat the touch and LCD. Make sure it stays flat.
Take your time and pay attention to all the wires. Take pics to reference where everything is. There is little to no tolerence for error on the rebuild.
I got it fixed

Hey Needo, I'm sorry for hearing that about your phone, I wish that it would be recovered soon, and this guy would be as honest as he said. I feel that he sensed that it's his fault to break the LCD. Anyways I wish that it would be fixed by now.
About me, I went to "Abdel Azeez street", hoping to find someone who might know something about this device, and you know what, I found that many people there already working with experience in Iphone and HD2. And I found that they fix it while you are with them to make sure that they don't cheat you, or fix it with used spare parts. For me, I found that guy who changed the touch in front of me with a new sealed one, it was a process of about 3 interesting hours, which cost me 550 EGP (91$). Of course it wasn't in the best quality as there are some dust between the LCD and the touch screen, and there is some light coming out from the bottom of the phone between the frame and the touch, but I consider them as minor losses . It's working perfectly now at last.
If you ever wanted his contact, I would be glad to forward it to you anytime.
cheers.
Hello,
i cracked my HD2 screen (digitizer), i purchased new one, but the cracked one was working and i was not in a hurry to change it. After a minor drop, the LCD touch screen cracked under the cracked digitizer and now i have black screen...
Now also i have to purchase LCD screen, but i saw that there is ready to use screen+digitizer(and of course more expensive than screen and digitizer alone) .
My question is - what will be easier to change - ready to use digitizer + screen, screen and digitizer alone or there is no difference. I'm asking this, because I'm wondering should i sell the digitizer (if i can) and buy the ready to use screen+digitizer, or to purchase the screen and to use it with the already received digitizer.
If you can afford it you have to go with the all in one. Too much can go wrong during assembly and you should avoid it if you can.
yup, separating and installing them separately is a pain in the arse, its always better to do it in the one job if you can afford the initial high cost. My LCD panel needs replaced due to light bleeding, but I cant be arsed, the digitiser is likely to fail in the future anyway being an HD2 so ill wait and just do the two of them together.
OK, thank you.
I've watched 2 or 3 "how to change digitizer" videos. Is there a video for changing the lcd+digitizer or its the same as the digitizer change? I have to disassemble the whole phone to change the digitizer...

there is a vid somewhere, ill have a look later, but essentially yes. you need to remove the whole lot, the only difference between doing them both and doing them separately is that the two panels are stuck to each other, and its that process of separating or putting back together that's really tricky and people have ended up damaging one or the other trying it.
What about the difference in the EU and T-Mobile versions, like in the digitizer (soldering and insertion) Is there a difference too, if i take the whole "pack" (LCD + Digitizer) and what should i look for if there is a difference?

If you buy combo(LCD+digitizer) there's no problem to replace it to whatever version of HD2 you own: combo is interchangeable on both versions!
OK, Thank you!
I'm asking because i asked some buyers on ebay, and they told me "Sorry, my friend, but this is for T-mobile version" But on the pictures, they are all the same.
I had my EU hd2 digitizer changed too when it was broken, and when it was changed to a tmous replacement, they couldn't get the promixity sensor working.
Now I dunno if that's a defect from the screen or because it's a incompatility problem, but a further gsensor-working-in-wm6-but-not-in-android-problem in my other replacement mashup hd2 hybrid EUTMOUS frankenstein phone suggests that some parts may not be interchangeable.
You should just make sure that it's a EU digitizer so you won't run into further problems.

But on a already assembled combo pack (LCD + digitizer) how to know if the digitizer is EU version, beside the T-mobile logo.

I doubt it's a relationship between digitizer and g-sensor/proximity sensor...

Let me clarify that; my hd2 EU first had its digitizer+LCD replaced with a TMOUS version, and the proximity sensor stopped working,
then the the mobo was replaced by a tmous mobo in the same EU housing and the accelerometer and magnetometer does not work properly (accelerometer works in wm6.5 but not android), but the proximity sensor worked.
It's not just me having a hardware replacement problem, there's a significant amount of posts by other users about replacement parts not working properly. So everyone should be at least very cautious about using them because replacing with other parts may cause other problems.
my buddys HD2's touch screen suddenly stopped working.
he gave me the phone for $50.
i guess ima have to do lil work
I need some help with choosing the combo
Which one should i take and why on one the second item there are those big cable-like things.
N1 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-and-DIG...ccessories&hash=item43adebdc7d#ht_3076wt_1110
N2 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-lcd-Tou...ltDomain_0&hash=item3a67e44659#ht_2175wt_1344
Will i need to solder them together or they are already soldered (welded junction or whatever)
Thank you!
Anybody?

Both versions are OK, but I would choose the first one.
There's no need for soldering(vers. 2): it's more like a packaging thing in order to get it mounted on chassis.

I guess its because you/they lost the little glasses that connect the display and the sensor.
Its easy to loose them as they fall out after you take the screen from the housing.
I lost them a few seconds ago and think that i know what wont work when i reassemble
@topic
there is generally no problem removing display from touchscrren. just make it hot with a fan or oven ~80°C is okay. and with a flat knive or iron-wire go for the glue.
If you do this you need new glue-tape. Mostly you get this from china very cheap but takes a while.
If your screen is broken now i would recommend to take a combi pack as you have no glueing, no alignment problems and so on.
its not very hard but kills some time and nerves ;D
OK, so lets do a round up, before i make the purcahse, so I'm sure i will make the right choice.
I'm going to buy this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-and-DIG...ccessories&hash=item43adebdc7d#ht_3076wt_1110
because its already assembled and much easier to use and IT WILL FIX on my EU version of the phone (Not US T-Mobile)
Only YES or NO will be enough

The Eu-HD2 is soldered isnt it? This version, from the picture, is the pluged version....
Im not sure because if you change the display also the connector type could be irrelevant.
But if this is the screen from Tmous-HD2, i remember that it was a bit bigger? Is it just the housing or also the display?
=>
Dont buy before this is clear!
(i would open my hd2, look what connector type is inside and buy that one just to be sure...)
And some advise: Try to glue the flex cable from the touchscreen(the one that goes under the end call button reallly close to the display)
This could help to improve the life-span of the cable as its not flexed every time you push the button(try when you hold it in your hands by putting the buttons in the frame and push it, if it flexes the cable fix that!!!)
Otherwise the cable will break one day and the wires will disconnect=> typical problem of not responding touchscreen
u8800-51 touch screen bottom not responding
hi all
i am new and ignorant
(love the xda rules vid)
just bought second hand at&t impulse 4g (u8800-51) , with the bottom half of the screen, not responding to touch.
the top half works
i was told that it happened when the device got dropped.
the picture is good.
got stuck in at&t logo boot loop, and erased back to original on the android rescue screen. and its booting again
tried to reassemble the screen , but no change.
will replacing the glass plus digitizer solve it?
is there a difference between u8800 and u8800-51 screen parts? (or any other hardware for that matter?)
thanks alot
Switching the touch screen (glass) will fix your problem.
In which side do you have the notification led on? Right or left of speaker?
If it is on the right, you probably have the smaller speaker system (that's good to know if you are buying with the frame).
There is no difference in the sockets, however I have seen all Impulse 4G have the Synaptics version (black flex cable), so it would be better if you'd buy that. Some of the eBay sellers are offering the official AT&T touch screen, with the logo on it, so that would be a safe place to buy from.
-EDIT-
Some more things to know:
When they are selling with a frame, you can see it on the picture and they usually mention that somewhere too. If you took the phone open, it's easy to tell if it's big or small by looking whether it looks like this (big speaker).

thank u so much
after a long study of the different pics of sellers, i remain a confused, because i finally found enough pics
(attached)
to realize that my model always have the black cable u mentioned which comes with a SMALL speaker, while the big speaker always come with the yellow cable, but alas, my device comes with a black cable, but big speaker,
so should i go with cable color + name mentioned (AT&T Impulse 4G) + AT&T logo, (which all calls for a Small speaker) OR , should i go with speaker size (big) ?
regarding my indicator position, it is to thr right when i look from the inner angle (like the photo of the big speaker that u added

That's the digitizer only. I don't think it's glass really, but it's easier to say it is.
I replaced mine by taking off the old digitizer from the frame. It came off pretty easily, it just needs some patience to take it apart without breaking it.
If you don't want to mess with glue, I'd suggest this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Digitizer...356?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4abfc0011c
It's without the AT&T logo. I cannot guarantee it will fit though, there is always this chance Huawei modified something else between the U8800 and -51.

i prefer not to risk peeling, for breakage, and gluing, for moisture and mess.
i am starting to think that my digitizer was not original, and that is why it failed.
and feels like plastic. i found an original part at cellulardr.com for about 70$ vs. the 10-$15 ebay ones.
so maybe the seller put on impulse 4g, a big earpiece frame, with a yellow cable digitaizer. what a mess!
i attach a pic of big vs small earpieces. i believe the ''big'' is the one with golden terminals.
i think i will get a cheap ebay small earpiece frame with a black cable digitizer (like the original had, i believe) , with a 5$ small earpiece as extra.
god. why do i feel like Sherlock Holmes ?

This is only with glass.
You can buy a used one for under $70 or an OEM frame with glass. In my op, its not worth to fix.

i am sorry - what is not worth fixing ?
yes, i am going to buy a small earpiese frame with black cable plus a small earpiece,
but seeing my old digitizer, i am starting to think (because of the price difference from the original) that all these E-bay so called "glass" , 10-15$ , advertized digitizers ,are actually made of plastic ??
but i will not "invest in an expensive glass before i am happy with the new device.
so far i have not seen used original digitizers.
if i am happy with the device, i might start looking for a"for parts" u8800-51 deal on E-bay
thanks again

Yes, but $70 and you have a brand new one. Basically, fixing it is more trouble than selling it.

the cheapest new impulse 4g i could find cost 150$. i do get your point, but i already invested time and money on it and i can't sell a device that i am not sure of his condition. also its a little bit exciting for me if i manage to make it work.
is there any way to bypass the faulty touch screen ,for sake of testing the phone,
with some external device such as usb\Bluetooth mouse and keyboard ?
