Hallo,
I'm coming from an HTC One, of which I had 5 as every single one had stuck pixels. As minute as they are in a screen this sharp, they still make a device feel 'tainted' out of the box and I couldn't put up with them. I have much more faith in Samsung, but can't help but feel a little apprehensive that my bad luck will continue!
Now, I have seen conflicting reports about whether AMOLED can get stuck pixels or not, or whether it is just dead pixels that can occur. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
Also, I had a SGS3 but never noticed any display flaws at all. Has anyone had any issues with Galaxy products in the past?
As I know, AMOLED it's not LCD, there is no backlight and the composition is organic. LCD use more energy, doesn't have black background and have problem with the pixels just like every LCD tv. AMOLED screens are different construction, so there would be no dead pixels. However, you can have black spots with black screen in darker rooms (I know sounds awful, but yes...most amoled have this issue but can't be seen in normal conditions) and the pixels can burn and lose intensity (never happened to my phones). So, amoled is much safer than lcd and the colors are more natural
^What has Exynos got to do with anything? :/
Well, I haven't had the dead/stuck pixel issue with the Note II, which I had with every single LCD phones to varying degrees. And seems like AMOLEDs tend to suffer from this a bit less too, relatively speaking. But AMOLEDs are not immune from stuck/dead pixels. And I'm not sure about this, but I'm thinking stuck/dead pixel would not be as visible in AMOLED.
But you should already be aware of the black blotches that you'll see on screen - that's pretty much standard with all AMOLED screens. Not a big issue, you wouldn't even notice it unless you crank up your brightness on a pitch black background in a dark room. For me that's a fair trade off for the superior quality and battery life that AMOLED offers.
Wasn't aware of the blotches, thanks for that. Just had a google and considering I never noticed it at all on my S3 can't see it being a prob. I have seen people claim that it is "mechanically" (or some similar word) impossible for an AMOLED pixel to get stuck, was just interested if anyone knew the details of such a claim if it is true.
Either way, judging how happy I was with the S3 screen I cannot see there being any problem on this one.
Sorry, corrected....I mean Amoled, not Exynos.

LCD uses two transparent panels with liquid crystals between them. When light is flashed, the lens twist to allow the light to be pass/blocked to produce different colours. When this doesn't work like being clogged/stuck or something then you get a stuck pixel, but it's possible to make it better or fix by using pixel apps that flash light on the screen to make it refresh.
AMOLED is OLED pixels that each generate its own light. No moving parts. It is possible to get a stuck pixel but less prone than LCD. But if you do get a stuck pixel displaying wrong colour, it's pretty much defective I think.
OK.
So I just got my s4 from tmoblie and it almost seems I have a stuck blue pixel. I noticed it when I first plugged it in to charge it up before using. On the charging screen I can see a clear blue dot where there shouldn't be one. I can also see it briefly when my screen goes to sleep and I hit the home button to turn it on. I ran through some color screens but it doesn't seem to show up. Not sure if this is just some OS / device issue, or if its an actual defect of the screen.
Anyone ever run into something like that?
Sounds like a stuck pixel to me if it's blue.

Try this and see if you can see it to confirm.

Same here - just got my s4 from t-mobile, except my stuck pixel is red. Can only see it when screen is on, but black (on boot up or phone wake). Using the detectors from the market help to show it (if I set the screen to all black). Doesn't show up in a screenshot, so definitely hardware. Debating whether it's worth it to return for the one stuck pixel that I can't see most of the time. From what I've read, on AMOLED screens, it won't just go away eventually.

I found a dead pixel in my first nexus one so I decided to swap it. The new one arrived today and I played with them side by side. The screens are very clearly different between the two. With everything set up identical and the same brightness setting, the one with the dead pixel is very clearly washed out looking with a greenish bluish tint to it. I actually noticed this somewhat before receiving the swap but thought it might be my imagination (the screen didn't seem as clear as my previous t-mobile version.) However, with them next to each other the difference was night and day.
I tried to get a good pic of it, but my photography skills are lacking and this is the best I could get. In person the one on the left (new one) is way better looking. The one on the right (sending back for dead pixel) has nowhere near the contrast and feels washed out, greenish, and unsharp.
So to conclude, if you think your screen might not be as as good as it should be, you may be right. I can't help but wonder if the dead pixel was just a symptom of a larger problem with the screen; perhaps the significantly reduced battery life I experience (compared to the t-mobile version I originally had) is also related to a screen issue. Time will tell...

Update: Here's a better pic. Especially note the green tint and washed out look at the top right where the time is displayed. Look back and forth between them. I edited the color slightly so that what you see more closely resembles what I see. In person the brightness appears the same for both even though the right one looks brighter in the pic.
I agree that the dead pixel could of been part of a bigger problem, but the way the picture came out it appears as if the one on the right is alot sharper.
You should try turning the brightness down on the phones before taking the picture. Also did you lose a flash, or is this effect just from it being at 100%brightness?
I know it looks that way, but it's just a crappy pic. I'll try again later today before I send the phone back. I didn't use flash, and screen brightness had no effect on the difference between the phones.
I actually prefer the the one on the right. The one on the left looks way too reddish/pink. Have you done a side-by-side comparison on the lowest brightness setting and going to a white screen page like Google?
the one on the right kind of looks like the color on a droid screen
The one on the right is far more color accurate. The one on the left looks like my T-mo launch N1, which has blown out reds and makes everyone's faces red in pictures that I take until I move them to a PC with a proper screen.
Color accuracy should be preferred over "pop" and "vibrance", IMO

Agreed, I wonder if HTC received a delivery of defective AMOLEDs from Samsung and just decided to use them rather than return them...
I had a similar issue. My old Tmobile N1 had a the blueish tint (like the picture on the right) but I had a dead pixel.
My new Tmobile N1 has the purple tint (like pic on left) and has no dead pixels yet. I've had them equal amount of time now.
I wonder if perhaps the old screens were having dead pixel issues and HTC decided to go with some different screens?
It could also just be the backlighting. The LED that's being used probably just emits at a higher temperature, eg more bluish-white.

With AMOLED there is no backlighting. Each pixel is its own LED, red green and blue ones, emitting its own light.
I've taken more pics at different light levels. Here's one with the brightness set all the way down. I edited the colors slightly so that what you see more closely resembles what I see in person. The left one does not have a purple or red tint; its colors are correct. The right one definitely has a green tint and is washed out looking. Also, in person the brightness of the two appears the same even though my camera picked up the green tint of the right one making it appear brighter in the photo.
Look at the top right where the clock is displayed to really notice the green tint and washed out look. Look back and forth quickly at the time...
My phone had the same effect of the left one, that is when I first got it. Over time, it starter to slowly lose that red/purple like tint, and the colors became more sharp and correct.
i think amoled screens are somewhat of an organism
I just got my replacement phone from HTC due to dust under the screen on my original N1 (purchased second day of release).
I noticed that the newer phone had quite a few differences, including the quality of the screen. See my post about my observations here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=655966
INTERESTINg..How much more battery life did you get with the new one?
Hello,
I have noticed when I look to my display in more detail I can see strange vertical lines through it. It is not very visible but I can see it better when there is white color for example in mail application, or if I setup blue color for lock screen. I wonder if it's just caused by AMOLED technology or my HW is not ok. Is it same on your devices?
Thanks

what colour are the vertical lines? samsungs OLED screens have pentile technology which kinda sucks in my opinion. basicaly it simplifys the pixel structure quite a lot so that it has the same number if pixels but rather than each one being split into a red, blue, green section they have 2 parts each alternating between red green and blue green. i think advantages are that this makes the screen brighter and colours stronger but it also reduces sharpness and seems to make the pixels more visible. i might be wrong for your case but I didnt realise this when i got the phone. still would choose it for the amazing blacks, just a shame they done have normal pixel structure.
hope that helps

Thanks. But I think it's not pentile technology. It looks like tiny straight scratches more visible on top part of the display especially visible on bright color,s for example when I use green for lock screen. I will return it to my seller and hopefully they will fix it or give me a new one.
I noticed it on my Focus, as did Engadget in their Nexus S review:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/10/nexus-s-review/
We did see some strange issues with the display -- while it does look handsome in most settings, we noticed some troubling inconsistencies in the panel against certain colors or tones. It was particularly pronounced on solid gray backgrounds (as you can see above). We're not sure the cause of the problem (or if it was simply an issue with the device we had), but it was somewhat troubling.

Can't decide which bothers me more though, the lines or the fact that the screen dynamically dims itself based the amount of white pixels that are displayed on screen.
I can't see those in my omnia, maybe it's only present in some of the panels?

It was quite visible in Game hub mostly on top part of the display. Or try to setup your lock screen to green.
I've noticed this on mine too. I'm wondering if it's just a bit of image retention from the live tiles on the home screen, much like you get on plasma screens. I've got a photo frame app which I'm using as a screen saver for a couple of mins each day to 'clean' the screen.
It may do nothing, but it's worth a try

cant say i can see any lines in the game hub but the green really seems to make the pixels more visible on the white 'games' writing at the top
My Guess would be that this too is due to the PenTile Matrix used by Samsungs Super AMOLED Screens. As the green occurs more often but only at half the size this might lead to this effect:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Nexus_one_screen_microscope.jpg
Sometimes I'm tempted to dub the Display a Super Lame-OLED but only until I see the colors next to a non OLED Display.

That's interesting. My problem looked like those tiny green vertical lines on your picture, but mine had grey colour and were very visible on top part of the display, in the center I could barely notice them. The other thing is that I should see them very close to each other but in my case they were 2-3 milimeters far away from each other, which convinced me that my HW is broken. Also when I showed it to the seller he advised me to send it back for repair.
Can you guys with cameras that have manual control test something for me?
Following on from a post by someone else about weird blotches on an all black image displayed on the screen, I checked mine today in pitch darkness and noticed a faint 2 inch or so of blackness on one edge of the screen along with smaller blotches. It doesn't appear to be as visible as the other poster's though but I exaggerated in in the photo so it's easier to see and settings posted below for people to check as well.
This is only visible on an all black screen. This does not exist on any of the S2's I've owned. I'll check my dad's S3 tonight when I go see him in the same way but the way to photograph it to keep the results consistent are as follows:
Stick camera and phone in a cupboard and...
Phone screen brightness: 50%
Camera ISO: 200
Camera Shutter: 15 seconds
Camera Aperture: f/4.5
Remember to pre-focus and use the 10sec timer to avoid shake
Those settings will over exaggerate the effect as shown in my photo below but it makes it easier for everyone to see as you do have to focus your eyes in reality and it's not immediately obvious unless you're in pitch darkness and looking at an all black screen.
I don't know how I feel about this though but if it's visible using the above camera settings for lots of people then I'll leave it as is.
Again, it's only visible on an all black screen so make sure your image that you load is all black and not grey or something Make sure screen timeout is set to at least a minute to avoid the screen going off!

What free app? It's a black image with screen timeout extended. The rest is your camera settings to be able to fairly photograph the screen for everyone to compare, an app can't do that

Oh well!
My first phone: (F/4, ISO 800, 20sec)
Second phone: (F/4, ISO 800, 30sec)
The guy at the store (**** Smith in Australia) was unable to reproduce the issue in-store, so swapped the phone out and said I'd have to go to samsung if I reported the same issue again. The 2nd phone still has the issue, but as you can see, nowhere near as bad... still... not very good is it.
My 2 year SGS1 had about 4 spots - never noticed any issue. The first SGS3 was definitely noticeable just scrolling through system menus at night.
That's rather bad^^ I've emailed mobiflefun with picture so let's see what they say.
Suggest you up your exposure (duration and/or ISO) to make it a bit more noticeable. Looks like you've got a fair amount of guff in the top-left corner.
:/ dodgy manufacturing.
I don't have an SGSIII yet, but I noticed pretty much this same thing on my Galaxy Note. One night I was viewing an image with an all black screen and it had these weird blotches on the screen. I had never noticed them before.

This "issue" is known since the SGS1. Is the leakege from the AMOLED display. One thing to consider i only have a line about half a CM in the same place where you have the circle mark. Maybe a manufacture failure?
quicker way to test.
1 - dark room
2 set auto brightness off and screen to lowest brightness.
go to phone and dial *#0*#
click vibrate test which will display black screen.
and then check....

but there is a warning for AMOLED devices:
***OLED screen owner please read***
(AMOLED screen of Samsung Galaxy S, Super AMOLED Plus screen of Samsung Galaxy S II, etc.)
- you should use only white, gray or black filter only.
- using color filter (not white, gray or black) for a long time may cause your screen more color tint. (it's about OLED screen property, not my fault)
- using any color filter other than black will cause black pixel being not 'true black' pixel anymore. (that means some power is required for black pixel)
- if the filter does not cover all of your screen, please uninstall this app because this may cause irregular color burn to your screen.

I definitely have a black crush issue with mine. I've tested 4 and they all have it but one dev has already found a fix for it. Just be patient till its released. Shouldn't be long now.
There's indeed a heavy black crush problem on this device (beside the yellow tint...). Hope some developer will fix this. Dark photos or videos don't show any details on this screen....

Supercurio by any chance? Good luck with that, after saying it was pretty much possible to fix the problem in the Galaxy Note after the ICS source was released, we did not hear much in the thread he started, then after a few idiots tried low tactics to get a responce from him, he got the hump and closed the thread.
This is such a stupid problem, and one that samsung customer services still refuse to acknowledge.
I was told to return my device and get a new one from a different batch, which I did, only to find the new one had the same issue. Now they want me go without my brand new device for 2 weeks while they fix it...wtf!!!
I was considering the s3, but after seeing this I am holding fire.

Yea, it is one of my few real niggles with this handset, but I have faith Supercurio will fix it. He mentioned that unlike the Note, the S3's fix was much easier and purely software based.
Also, I don't think changing S3's will solve the problem. It is my belief that ALL S3's suffer from this issue, it's just not all people realise or notice because it's not generally that obvious.

look at the pictures in the thread.........
there is not gradual scaling from black to the rest of the color spectrum....if its not bright its Super Dark, no inbetween.
as in watching movies, a dark movie like the crow, or spawn. a lot of the scenes its just to dark to reallly even tell whats going on. but on my TV or even another phone, while its still dark you can SEE the difference in Blacks which defines the shapes of that scene.
or thats what i take from it anyway. i have not read anything just from my phone to other thread and pictures this is what i think it is.
ok, thanks. Now I can name this annoying "thing" when watching avi movies. I always blamed avi files for this. But as I can remember it's a common "feature"/bug in phones. I remember the same on Nokias too.

Make sure you're on maximum brightness in a somewhat dark room and play around with the mDNIe scenarios and modes.
'Dynamic' mode doesn't allow me to see the difference, but others do - but I don't like their coloring.

Very often it's the source file. Compression works by searching for blocks (or other geometrical shapes, e.g. triangles) of approximately the same color and storing them as having the same identic color. The "stronger" the video/image/audio compression, the more such artifacts you get. (Of course it's more complicated than that, since it has to consider 3 dimensions, them being X, Y and time T)
Sometimes players try to correct these issues with post-processing algorithms (which have their downside too), so it's more noticeable on some devices than others.
I. Dead Pixels
Dead Pixels are pixels that are damaged and do not display a color. These are clearly visible when white is being displayed since they are black dots. Dead Pixels cannot be fixed.
Regarding Dead Pixels. I would appreciate if you guys could submit to this survey I have going on. Thanks

II. Stuck Pixels
Stuck Pixels are pixels that are "stuck" on one color subpixel: Red, Green, or Blue. Typically, a stuck pixel is a bit obvious when white is being displayed, but there is an app that tests for stuck pixels here. (Although the app says Dead Pixels, a dead pixel is often confused with a Stuck Pixel).
If you have confirmed that you do indeed have a stuck pixel, then you should run this video on your phone for awhile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62d17RtgVU8
Sometimes, pressing on the area of the pixel helps to "unstuck" it.

I was browsing the web and I started getting this lines going vertically down the screen when I was scrolling now they fade in and out with my live wallpaper. Has anyone experienced this? Going to contact Google obviously

Definitely get that replaced.
Holy crap, that's awful! Mine has light bleed at the top. It's faint but visible on black screens when the status indicators (time, 3G/4G icon, etc) aren't blocking it. Replacement had worse light bleed (3 spots instead of 1) and a yellower screen. If my next replacement is worse, I think I might just keep the original. Waiting months to get a pristine device is wearing on me. Other than that, phone seems to be find.
This is what I get to look at, it seems to be software related since it also comes through on a screen shot, but a factory reset didn't really fix anything. Sometimes they go away, sometimes different ones light up, its quite strange.
The picture is quite small, but you can see a bunch of lit up pixels near the green line in the background, my screen is pretty much covered with them.
I had to RMA mine this morning, it was 7 days old and just noticed that in the middle of my screen just below the notifications bar there is a small cluster of pixels that are pure light (no colour) - it shows up like this on every colour except black, black works fine.
I tried the usual 'fix' methods and it didn't help at all.
Most people probably wouldn't notice but now I know it is there it would really bother me so I had to RMA it (especially given I have only had it a week!).
dead/stuck pixel
I have this area near the top of my screen. by the google search bar , that has a white spot. It shows up more on white back grounds.

Hey Lenny, Iv'e got exactly the same issue right now. It's not visible on black or dark grey but it's like a brighter than white small spot in 1 part of the screen. I have arranged an RMA because it's only appeared today after 1.5 weeks of use. It bugs me because I'm a bit OCD about this kinda stuff.
Just hope the replacement is a good one. Iv'e also got very feint speaker "rapid ticking" sound during calls but I was prepared to live with that one. If I'm lucky the new one will also get rid of that too.
Fingers crossed :fingers-crossed:

Any news about this? I have the same pixel stuck on white on the same spot. It looks like it is widespread fault, not just stuck pixel... Any luck with homebrew repairs, or should i RMA? How does RMA function if a device has been with me for 6 months or so?
