Bad Imei Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a phone from craigalist. The seller mentioned that it was Tmobile nexus 4 but now bad imei. I bought it knowing it was bad on tmobile. But it doesn't even work with att sim as well. Are they now sharing black listed phone among each other. Anyway I bought it for international use but just wondering if something else might not be wrong besides being bad imei on network. Thanks

is it bad imei, or no imei?

I was told bad because I can see the imei. In system setting

have you tried it in tmo? and, did you manually input the right apn for att into the phone(it needs the att apn, its not included in the default setup. tmos apn is included). and yea, they sometimes share blacklisted imei.

If I put Tmobile sim. It comes as Tmobile APN automatically. And when I put att sim. It comes as att automatically. But I though APN was just for data. I have no bars and not connected to network. I don't want to send phone international and that thing is got something else wrong.

If the phone is blacklisted by TMo it won't work on any network in the US as they started sharing blacklisted IMEI's to a central database in 2012.

Only way to get a blocked imei is not paying T-Mobile for the phone or it was reported stolen. So technically it's a stolen phone ethics 101

So what if it's stolen. What's he going to do? Return it? Bahaha, yeah right.
Did you buy the phone hoping you can use it in another network? If so, that was a bad decision on your part. :good:

I don't know what the laws are in the US, but in most countries if you try to sell a stolen object knowing that it was stolen from its rightful owner, it's a criminal offence even if you paid for it. So OP will never be able to sell his phone. Secondly, if the police ever do show up, OP will have to hand the phone over without receiving any sort of compensation.
Since the description didn't mention the phone being stolen, can't OP request a refund for the phone from his credit card company (or whatever payment method he used)?

I've never met anyone on Craigslist who took credit cards. The phone could have been reported lost or stolen to TMo which would then put it on the blacklist. But also I could see where that if you stopped paying your TMo bill before the end of your contract, which the handset is a part of as its subsidized, TMo would blacklist it as in effect it is now a stolen phone.

Bad ESN on my Nexus 4?

I've had my Nexus 4 for about a month now. Regrettably, I had bought the device on CraigsList out of sheer desperation. I've been using the phone on T-Mobile via prepaid for the month and its been working great. As of this morning though I had no service. I called T-Mobile to find out that my Nexus 4 had been blacklisted. They didn't give me a reason, just that its been blacklisted. How could this have happened, and is there any way to fix this?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Carriers will do that if its reported stolen. Not saying it is.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
You bought it from a scammer that bought the phone with his CC and then sold it to you, then charged back...
So he pockets your $400 or w.e u paid.
If I were you I'd call the police and notify them.
I think the only way is to move your phone service to AT&T prepaid or buy another one (currently available through play store). The scammer probably bought the phone through Tmobile with EIP and stopped paying for it.
Why don't you just use another carrier, that's your only choice, since the phone is unlocked you don't have to use it on any particular carrier, big deal if the guy scammed you

Not in the US, although apparently that is changing.
It is probably blocked from at&t and T-Mobile. But straight talk and the like should still work, let us know if it does.

Actually it should already be changed and all US carriers should now block a stolen IMEI. Engadget reported on this back in April of 2012.

It all depends on how you bought it. If you paid cash, you might be out of luck. If you used a credit or debit card, then perhaps your provider offers some kind of refund policy. If it was PayPal, then you can likely get the refund.

Ok.. Heres the story... Transaction took place on Craigslist..
So I had a blue color galaxy S3 and didnt like the color, traded it for a new nexus 4.. Nexus 4 was fine, and I was really wanting a titanium S3.. Found the S3 and bought it.. Sold the nexus 4 to a guy for 310.. The nexus 4 was working great until yesterday.. Guy calls me up thinking i sold him a stolen phone.. As far as I knew it was a good phone, i check the imei and it says its been reported stolen, so i offer to give the guy back his money.. Now im stuck with a blacklisted N4.. Need help. Anywhere I can go to revive the phone? Or anywhere I can sell it to? What are my options? Is it possible to flash a ROM or do something when rooted to change the Imei..? At least make it useable because the guy i originally traded with decided to change his number and now im out $310.. whats the best thing to do? I cant go to the cops, they will tell me im associated with the theft, asked tmobile they want to fill out a bull**** report..
is there a way to flash a Rom or something to maybe hide the Imei or something? Use a different carrier? unlock it even though its unlocked?
Or should i get my mini screw drivers and start to disassemble it to sell for parts? Man i feel ****ty doing this.. I mean im so against stolen things and i just hate to deal with it ugh

Buy an N4 with broken screen for cheap and replace the mainboard. Installing other roms won't help you. Or replace the screen with your phones screen. Do wat is the easiest to replace.

You can buy stuff off of CL, but you have to be smart. I've bought dozens of phones off CL (and sold) and was only burned once. I bought an Atrix 4G with a wonky touch screen. Actually, I bought an EVO 4G with a wonky touch screen too but that was just my fault, I showed up to meet the guy a little intoxicated lol. Anyway, when I bought my Nexus 4 (new) I had the guy bring the receipt from Google Play and give it to me. I also asked a lot of questions....

Those are both rather silly remarks.
You're a victim, why would the police be anything but sympathetic to you? And it's not a bs report, it's a report detailing the crime. Maybe they can track the original scammer down with that report. Maybe your insurance co will reimburse you with that report. Don't lose whatever small chance you have by being too lazy to fill out some paperwork.

If this helps... I'm from Belgium and I bought my phone off someone from England.
Got a pretty good deal too (as it was new)
The catch was that it was blacklisted too...he sent me the reportcard and apparantly that stated that it was only blocked by 2 providers. None of which I am using.
So maybe switching providers could work OR since Belgium has no (or nearly no) providers linked to the phones as they don't come in deals the phone just works, blacklisted or not. So try selling it abroad and buy buy yourself a new one.
I doubt that you can unblock it.
Is it blacklisted by T-mobile or Google? If it is blacklisted by T-mobile it should work on AT&T and it will definitely work overseas.

The database is launched, but the carriers are not sharing IMEI's yet. Bad ESN Verizon phones work on other carriers and blocked T-mobile or AT&T phones will still work on the others network. The thing is, not only does the IMEI have to be entered into the database, but the carrier manually has to apply that to their own database to effectively block it from their network.
And, a blacklisted phone will most definitely work overseas.

[Q][New Verizon Activation]

Has anyone activated the MXP as a new Verizon contract? I have read thorough the post and have seen mostly people that have already had Verizon contracts and just put that Sim in the MXP.
Sent from my SCH-R530U using Tapatalk
I'm wondering the same having only used GSM phones. So far I'm using my AT&T SIM but believe Verizon has better coverage in my area (western CT).
On their site I started here (scroll down) with the 'I'm not with Verizon' button, then chose 'I have my own device' on the popup and got to a page I can't directly link that asks for my device ID/IMEI, and then tells me "The phone associated with the Device ID you entered is not compatible with the Verizon Wireless network."
I would like the 3 GB $45/mo plan and am assuming that's with no contract and should be available for the Moto XPE, right? I can go to a store but I'd like to know the facts first to avoid getting derailed by unknowledgeable/uncooperative staff, though I'd prefer doing it online if I can get past the phone ID barrier. Maybe they'll update their approved phones soon but I'd like to shift over before the 20th when my current month ends with AT&T. Should I try calling them and has anyone done that successfully?

I called the number on the website and got a sales associate who also took my IMEI and said it's not currently 'registered' (the word he used) on Verizon, so I can't get a new account using it. He couldn't/wouldn't give any clear idea on if/when it will be but did say the new plans are no-contract now. My guess is a store will tell us the same thing, so won't bother unless we hear of success stories from others and how they did it.

Or simply buy a regular sim card for htc m9 on ebay or wherever and then chat with them or call and ask them to activate without device, tell them you are using non-vzw device which works just fine on Verizon,or some people had success at corporate stores with managers activating,or if you have a good premium retailer try that as well.
Need an imei of a device that takes a nano sim that is allowed on VZW network. I wasn't making a new account but I needed the nano sim. Wife's device (galaxy s6)is on the account and had the VZW rep use her device imei to issue me a simcard. Works perfect.

This is why I think using a prepaid Sim might work, because since is under Verizon's BYOD, Bring Your Own Device, that they will allow it to be activated. I am then wondering if I then ask for a normal contract if it would be simpler.

There's only 3 places to buy from: Motorola, Amazon and Best Buy. If you're buying from Best Buy, they can activate it for you. I believe with Amazon, you would have to go to your carrier just like if you bought from Motorola.
Pretty irritating
I bought the prepaid sim pack yesterday & spent an hour and a half on the phone with them and can't get it activated. Does anyone know what to do? Apparently the device isn't in the system according to the techs I spoke with even though you can enter it in the device compatibility and it says it is

Blacklisted anyway of un doing this??

You're pretty much screwed unless your carrier whitelists your device again. Cloning or using a different IMEI won't make things better. It will in fact get you blacklisted again the minute your carrier sees that there are two identical IMEIs out there. IMEI numbers are unique, so if your carrier is cooperating with other national and international carriers, they will catch that IMEI and blacklist it again. But this time they won't only blacklist your device, but also the other one too, screwing another guy in the process. This is why you never ever reveal your IMEI online, and it's why reviewers on YouTube will hide the IMEI in the video.
Call your carrier and ask them why they blacklisted it. If they say it's a stolen phone, then tell them your story.
What if you used a efs from another country. For example new Zealand? Also would a efs backup of a say... galaxy s4 work? If the person is never going to where ever you live in the world it would work wouldn't it?

That would work, unless your carrier is big. If it's a big one like T-Mobile, Telenor, Vodafone, China Mobile etc. they'll probably have a cooperation in place where they share IMEI stuff between each other. This way it's a lot harder for criminals to move stolen devices across borders. It also makes the lives of Chinese OEMs who clone IMEIs to make their own "fake" devices work, a lot harder.
But I wouldn't use another person's IMEI unless that person was aware of it first.
So using a s4 or s5 efs backup would work on a gs7 variant?

NEVER EVER EVER mess with your efs partition!!! Any tampering with that will end up with a 000000000000000 imei or the default one of 004999010640000 which is usually black listed cause its a defualt. That will make your phone unable to register on ANY network anywhere in the world...
There are safeguards built into the lowest levels of android to detect any efs tampering!
Anyone know if it would work using a s5 imei which is no longer being used?
Same thing happened to me!! Bought a S7 Edge and even checked the Imei before committing to the sale... The next day it wouldn't connect. I thought something was wrong with my Sim, got a new one and brought it into the carrier - they told me it must've been reported stolen and the carrier couldn't even help me find the original owner. So now I'm stuck with a phone I have no clue to do with.
Motherboard swap....
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
Do not mess with efs... like other users said it will just make things worse.. it's illegal for a reason.. otherwise I could call my provider now and claim stolen and get another phone sent and have 2 s7e for price of one if it was that easy...
never buy new phones from anywhere apart from official suppliers... not worth the discount.
Only fix is motherboard replacement with a clean IMEI
Or
Sell/swap overseas
I just did a motherboard swap for a different reason. It was pretty easy.

I said before, they will be black listed eventually. It's easy for them to start black listing them as they get them back. They are not going to want to accidentally have them activated again.
I don't think we have to worry for now, but at some point I would bet money there if a forced blacklist of all Note 7s if you kept it or not. I don't think they can make you return it, but they can keep you from using it on their network.

How did you unlock your Sprint Note 7 for use with AT&T?
I talked to a connection I have at Sprint (high up), they will not be blocking Note 7s unless you swap them out to Samsung, then they go dead as if lost. If you choose to keep it, they are not cutting you off or forcing you turn them over, it's only recommended. In fact less than half of the Note 7 user have return them and are still active as of today.
Hmmm.... Has anyone heard of anymore Notes going up in smoke? Last I heard 97 had went up in flames here in the United States. I haven't heard of any new cases since before the recall got expanded.

Surprisingly easy to believe. Pretty sad. I'm just trying to decide how long to keep my device though. Updates. Support. Even insurance. It's all a question now. Until the next big thing at least
Sure they are blocking phones turned in with the recall but NOT phones that are still active.
Mine is fine as well!! Note 7 is not going to leave my hands, unless of course after all this time it decides to explode, but i'm not counting on it.:good:
