I'm not sure if I am in the right section but I am running this on a Nexus 4.
I will be a truck driver for the summer, driving cross country. I plan on getting a Verizon Jetpack because T-Mobile sucks on interstates and I listen to music through Pandora and Google Music. What I am trying to setup is a tasker profile that turns WiFi ON when mobile network type is EDGE or GPRS, and turns the WiFi OFF once the mobile network type is HSPA (or LTE) again. The goal of this being, use my unlimited T-Mobile data when usable data is available and only use my Jetpack data when there isn't usable T-Mobile data.
I can get tasker to turn WiFi on by making a mobile data state for 3G-HSPA and 4G inverted, but once it is connected to WiFi, it doesn't check mobile network data anymore, so WiFi remains on when I gain 3G or 4G. I need it to check mobile network type, not what kind of data it has. Anyone have any clues?

How do you get online on your X1?
I use WiFi connectivity.
I use wifi pretty rarely (even though its available at home and in the office) ...have an unlimited data plan so its 3G/HSDPA all the way for me
Can I suggest a POLL format for this thread?
Would allow people to click their response, and you to see & track proportions (and the rest of us interested parties too!)
Data plan only (3G/HSDPA/GPRS)
WIFI only
Mix of data plan & WIFI
Neither / Only use data rarely
Haha, I did post a poll but it didn't show up. I'll try it again.
i have unlimited data and wifi hot spots with my tarrif but as yet havent used a hot spot lol i use use the data tho its abit slow as 3g coverage is poor where i live
I put 3G and Wifi
Most of the time I'm using HSDPA, but do sometimes drop back to EDGE.
Wi-Fi only ftw !!!!!!!!!! Wi-Fi is basically available anywhere these days. Why bother paying for something you could get for free? I get that there are situations like emergencies and the like, but still, free of charge forever.
P.S. When I saw that poll I was like:

Bump, I want to see more votes and opinions.

I heard that if your 3G Connection drops you use EDGE for free.
I also heard that you can also order an EDGE data plan but you are blocked from 3G Data plan.
But someone should clarify this for me.

Depends on the country/carrier.
But i've only seen the 3G icon about twice :S
Unlimited AT&T 3G/HSPDA ($15/month) plus WI-FI where available, mostly at home.
Does anybody know how to disable automatic internet connecting?
I mean, when i don't want anything from the internet, X1 is always trying' to connect to the internet. where is that option like: "disable automatic connecting" or somethink like that... it drives me crazy....

Start Menu > Settings > Connections > Connections > manage existing connections > tap and hold all the connections you see > tap on delete.
Done...if you can't do this...shame on society
Now you can use Wi-Fi without worrying about accidental 3G or media.net or EDGE access.
I sometimes use active sync, but if it's plugged into my laptop, there's not much of need for me to use internet on the X1.
I sometimes use WiFi at home and work, but the same thing - I can use my laptop or PC for the net, don't need it on the X1 much.
I have a data plan, but live in a roaming area, so limit my carrier usage around here. The signal isn't the best and the phone changes between 3G & EDGE automatically. When I head to the city it's HSDPA
So the if the phone connects over wifi it drops the data connection that might've been present on your phone network connection. Is it possible to configure your phone to maintain both wifi and 3G/HSDPA connections at the same time?
I require this because my operator provided (H3G UK network) Skype application only runs on 3G and I have to keep turning off wifi for it to work.
Funny, I find this feature great!! With my WM phones I never knew if it was using wifi or my data connection....even if you can do this how do you make one app use one connection over the other?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Good q, i'd also like to know if it's possible...
Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S! ^_^
You can try droid wall, and configure it to block wifi for skype, it may solve your issue.

Hmm, doesn't sound like that will work, because the phone has already dropped the phone network data connection as soon as I get back home onto my home wifi network (due to prioritisation?) I want the phone to maintain both so I can receive incoming Skype calls at home with fiddling with my phone. I understand why the phone does it and it is sensible for it to do so in most cases, but just not for my usage requirements!
Is it a software/hardware limitation that wifi and phone network data connections can't be open at the same time?
Install Nimbuzz. It supports Skype without that bulls**t restriction. It doesn't support group chats though.

I lose the "H" or "3G" notifier when the phone connects to wifi, that's why it looks like it's purposesly dropping the data connection once it picks up my wifi, I can't see a way to maintain both simultaneously.
I'm using "Skype for 3" provided by my network, it has special integration on the 3 network which allows me unlimited Skype usage (inbound and outbound) without it eating into my data plan. So with this benefit I don't really want to use an alternative app.
I want to keep Skype running all the time so I can receive calls on it, but once I get home, the wifi kills the "H"/"3G" connection, which means my Skype can't receive calls.
the icon isn't there but i think the data (H / 3G) is still running in the background, incase your Wifi fails.
wifi is the... PREFERRED network?
have you tried getting your friend to call you via skype while you're on wifi?
is there any app to force the streak to only try to connect to wifi and not 3g? at my work in areas wifi is spotty and when it automaticaly checks e-mails ect if the wifi is bad its using my limited data plan, i would rather it not
thanks
settings==>wireless & networks==>Mobile Networks and uncheck the Data Enabled box. Now no 3G. Reverse when you want 3G
It says no internet connection on my xoom but it shows that theres 3G signal. whats wrong?
Not to be dumb or anything, but you did buy a data plan, right?
This is definitely worth a call to Verizon, because it sounds like something went bad in the setup. My 3g worked right out of the box. Out of curiosity, do you have a 3g phone and are you having any connection problem with it? Does your Xoom connect via WiFi? Also, under settings -wireless and networks -mobile networks, is the data enabled checkbox checked?
Wanted to throw this out there to see if anyone is having the same issues. I have unlimited data with the unlimited hotspot add on. I frequently connect my laptop to my phone with the hotspot and will download a TV show or movie. It downloads rapidly but it is like it hogs my phones local Internet connection. I keep getting no mobile connection on my phone's spotify or browse the Web. Even when the download is complete, my mobile connection will not return to my phone. I have to turn the hotspot off and toggle mobile data to restore. I've never had that problem on my nexus devices or other phones with Verizon. What gives??
I am fully stock, only a few apps installed.
