Notification light?

Is the LED below the screen supposed to function as a notification light? I ask because I haven't seen it light up even once for anything. Not when charging, nor when there are new emails, messages, etc. Heck, does it work at all?

I see the notification light blink white when I have a new email from Gmail. Do you have Settings->Display->Pulse notification light enabled?
I guess you should make sure you have email notifications (do you hear sounds?) on as well.
I to have yet to see this notification light. I do have Pulse notifications enabled and yet nothing happens when charging even after the device is turned off and charging. I'm unlocked, rooted, stock, with CWM recovery.
Edit: I also do hear the notifications when receiving emails just not the light notification.

Yes, my pulse notification setting is on. I get the audible tone that I have email but no light ever.

You guys are not alone. There is another thread on this issue. Seems that the LED, for some of us, works sometimes but often does not work at all. There is an app called LED tester (free) that you can use to see what the situation is with your LED. Note that installing Light Flow is not a solution - when the LEDs are not working they will not be working under Light Flow control. So far I haven't been able to spot what triggers the LEDs to start or to stop working. Restarts seems to have no effect. With mine, when they work they work for a day or two then abruptly stop and stay stopped for a day or so.
A number of people seem to be affected by this but there is no indication yet whether this is a software bug (hopefully) or a dodgy hardware batch.
Mines been working since day one... Installed light flow and kept on moving

I've never seen the LED on mine, LED tester does nada! I'm hoping it's software but ultimately not too concerned, not a feature I care too much about.

Where is the light supposed to show up?
My notification light works, alas on both the N10 and the GN it *never* blinks on the first notification it should report after a reboot. From the 2nd time onwards it works as intended.
Didn't even realize this had an led...so guess mines never lit up either

The notification light only blinks when the screen is off and a notification is received...

By default, the notification lights only show up when the screen is off... and the moment you power on and reach your lockscreen, they go off... in my custom ROM, I have an option to enabled the notifications lights when the screen is on as well...

No kidding, I had to go look in the little book to see where the led even was!
I disabled it due to constant pulsing...mine works TOO good.
Looks like mine doesn't work. Even after using light works app. This may push me to exchange this now along with light bleed problem that is pretty visible.

Led colors

Hi, i'm looking for which color led could be use with Light Flow. I tried a lot of colors but some doesn't even light the led, even in red. Could anyone give me a list of all the colors nexus 4 support ? Thanks !
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Hmm. That's strange. All colours work for me.
I'm using the free app 'cause if led doesn't work even in the paid app i Will not like it...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Colors work for me also. If you have the screen off and get multiple alerts with different colors they do not alternate very well. That is a problem with JB though, not Light Flow.
Are every colors working for you ? I've 4/5 colors which are working but not more...
And i try to test the led in the notifications part of the app. When i set red for example, the led will light up, but if i set yellow, or white, or another color, nothing...
EDIT : ok so i uninstalled and reinstalled the app... And now everything works fine ! Looks like my settings were bad... Thanks all !

[Q] Nexus 4 notification light

My Nexus 4 just arrived and while playing with it I noticed that the notification LED was nowhere near as bright (50%) as my Nexus 3 (Galaxy Nexus). It also flashes at a much slower rate than the GNex!
Is this normal?
Can anyone else confirm this please?
Yes its normal.

Is there anything I can do to make it brighter?
It's really hard to see the light in a bright room and the reduced frequency means that the notification could be missed easily.

Nothing you can do to make it brighter. You can install light flow form the play store to customize colors and frequency.

Adjust your brightness settings? flash a custom rom that gives you more control of your led light???

and,.. what rom would that be?
Just install light flow mate. As someone else said you can have a different color for each notification and you can set now fast it blinks.
You can even set the light to be solid so it doesn't even blink.
When you set colours they are a lot easier to see than the white ish one that's stock.

Thanks, going to do that right now!

Light manager works well too. I like it better than light flow because it doesn't drain as much battery
These apps from the playstore drain too much battery. You can get almost the same control over your LED if you flash a ROM like CM or ParanoidAndroid, you will find the preferences for LED under display in those ROMs

Lightflow does not drain battery.

Light Flow don't drain battery and bright settings are no ajustable.

Led

I am very happy to see the new N7 has an led, but not it sure it changes color. I downloaded light flow but only got a white led notification. Anybody else notice this? maybe light flow just isn't ready for new device.
Sent from my 2013 Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
You are correct sir, its only a white led. Wish they spent the extra $0.50 for a multi color led. At least we have one and we can tweak it at that!

Only white! Really? #Flaccid

Ya I am rooted and messed around with light flow for awhile. Unless I was doing something completely wrong the new nexus 7 only has a white led as others have stated.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
I remember seeing a green light on a Google promo video showing this device before it was announced. Maybe the controller is not the same and lightflow needs to update.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
Even the nexus 4 is only white on a stock ROM. Once cm is installed, it can be tweaked. And yeah, I think lightflow needs an update.

[Q APP] App to change LED notification to variable

Hey, I was wondering if there is anyway to be able to change the LED light color to variable...I know there is a way to change it to a solid color and have that blink but is there any way, say after receiving a text message, instead of it just blinking blue but to cycle from blue to red to yellow to green etc.?
Light Manager from play store has alternating mode. I believe that will flash all active notifications in succession.

I have been using light manager...however, I can not figure out how to get it to alternate...I have the alternate mode selected but when I get a notification it is just the one solid color....am I missing something?
Light flow does what you are asking. There's both a free and pro version however I use the pro and I love it

Stupid question did you restart light manager or your phone after you changing modes? I have issues with it not switching every once in a while restarting my phone seems to help.
