Hi, I was just wondering if I need to go through the whole process when updating a rom in Clockwork? I am running Paranoid and I have received many updates and its getting frustrating having to set up my phone like it was brand new after each update. I just installed PA Updater but at the end of the download it brings me to Clockwork anyway. For an update to a rom I usually wipe data/ factory reset / wipe cache partition / perform a backup and wipe dalvik cache. Are these steps only necessary when installing a new rom? I am new to this and love the benefits that unlocked bootloaders / custom roms and root give me but I am sick and tired of setting up my phone once a week. I imagine flashing a new rom means I am guaranteed to go through the set up process as if it were a brand new phone ??? Is there an easier way to do this???
Thanks
Yeah sure ask the dev to build a rom already set up according to your settings

no need to wipe anything when updating a rom, just flash it over what you already have(dirty flash). if the rom needs gapps, flash them as well. you wont lose any data. you do need to wipe data when flashing to a different rom.
I don't get where people get the idea of wiping literally everything when flashing an update. Just flash over the old one, wipe cache/dalvik and you're good to go.

Wiping data when flashing a new rom is a bit like reinstalling Windows. It helps to eliminate potential problems. However, because of the amount of time and effort it takes, wiping your phone every single time you update is plain stupidity, especially if you are on cyanogenmod nightly updates. Unfortunately, some people (including developers) have decided to encourage people to wipe with every single update in order to deal with less bug reports due to, admittedly, user errors.

ok so after rooting my shift i followed all the steps got the recovery on there and downloaded a ROM and wiped everything and when the rom flashed it said error 7 instalation aborted so i hit reboot system now just to see what would happen because i did wipe everything so i was expecting to be stuck at the boot img..no problem was just playing around but the thing actually booted in a rom that looks 100% stock....what happened
even tho the ROM looks 100% stock it is def not i have adfree and esfile explorer added to app drawer now if its gonna flash the rom anyways why does cw 2.5.1 tell me its a no go with a stauts 7 i have even formatted my card to wipe it 100% and the same thing happens>?
when you "wipe" you're not wiping the rom. The data, cache etc yes. Only a rom install overwrites a prior rom. unless you format the phone.

People that flashed the base steel posted had similiar issues. E.G. if you were on cm6 and wiped, then flashed the base, you'd boot into a fresh cm6. The partitions were setup wrong, I believe.

I just rooted for the first time yesterday so I'm fairly new to all this... is it common practice to wipe cahce/dalvik prior to flashing any ROM?
I've gone back and forth from the stock ROM to another custom Sense ROM without wiping and no issues. Is it only advised if something goes wrong? Also, is there an issue with just going into recovery and wiping cache when NOT flashing a new ROM (just rebooting to the same one I'm using)? Thanks for the help.

Its good practice to always wipe. You may get by without it a few flashes. But eventually you'll be haunted by force closes, boot loops, etc.
Personally when I flash a new rom after the data, cache and dalvik wipes I format my boot, system, data and cache partitions manually via the mounts menu.
From experience, to truly see changes in rom updates or properly enjoy an entirely different one, this eliminates most problems before they ever manifest.

i started noticing that after i flashed a new rom, alot of my settings are set to the way i had them before. and some apps are already installed that would otherwise need a marketplace install..
keep in mind, i always do a wipe of cache/dalvik/sdcard
i think it started happening after i partitioned the sd card for those old sense roms that needed extra space.. cant remember..
but it seems like theres a portion of rom that isnt being wiped and all my settings are being carried over to the next rom flash..
how can i fully wipe my phone or get it back to normal?
this is weird, and i want it to stop. any ideas?
i just flashed back to amonra

Are you using ROMs that have Google back up enabled?
Also, if the zip isn't set to wipe /data and you're not wiping it then you'll still have all of your data.
That has happened to me too. Are you wiping sdext and android.secure in recovery. I always wipe those and haven't had that happen since I started doing that.
We're comin from a pure power source.
naw i turn off all that google backup stuff.
thats the thing, when i try to wipe sdext it gives me an error (from the last i remember doing it)
Hmmm. Latest version of amon ra?

You should be wiping data as well when flashing new roms.
I flash vrsuperwipe everytime I flash, but I use Google backup, so when I flash a new sense ROM it saves a lot of my settings, and my SD-ext apps automatically appear. Good feature imo.

bump for any other answers or advice
thanks guise.
still wondering about other options before testing some new roms
same thing happened to me so I tried repairing sdext and then re-partitioned my card and left it ext2 instead of ext3,wipe data/cache/dalvik cache/system flash superwipe, then flashed rom. don't know which one worked but it stopped. Also I noticed it mainly happens when I flash 3.0 roms but it has happened on CM7 to

You did not wipe data. If you do this you will preserve all of you apps (if they were not on card), data and system settings. This may work for you if the new ROM that you are moving to is similar enough. It can cause big problems if the structure of the ROMs is too different. You can end up with a phone that lags and has wakelocks (at best) or is not functional at all due force closes all over the place.
You should really wipe data as well before flashing a ROM and then do a selective restore of data on the new ROM.
Can anyone help me please, I have posted this on the PA thread but have had no response
I am unable to install PA on my nexus.
I have rooted and unlocked my device via the nexus root kit, downloaded the latest TWRP and installed this on my device. Moved PA and GAPPS to my storage and flashed PA first and then GAPPS, wiped dalvik and reboot the device. All that happens is the ROM doesnt appear to want to flash on the device as it reset my nexus back to factory settings but never installed the ROM.
I have also attempted this with goomanager but get stuck in a bootloop after install
However, I have been able to download and install CWM and CM10 so I know there is no issue with the device.
Can anyone provide any insight as to why this may be happenening
Have you verified the md5 of your download?
Also, patience is a virtue. Believer or not, some questions aren't always answered in mere minutes, as most folks have lives outside of the forum. I know waiting can seem unreasonable at times, but the timespan between you asking in the PA thread and then starting this completely new thread asking the same question was less than twenty minutes.

You left out the most important step in switching from one ROM to another... As mentioned in several tutorials and posts:

It helps but for the last 3 different roms I've thrown onto my n7 I haven't done that, All I've had to do was wipe my caches.

Wiping caches is unnecessary. New cache is built upon first boot.
You might have gotten away without wiping data if the bases for your ROMs were similar. Paranoid requires a wipe coming from most other ROMs.
Also you run the risk of corrupting your settings and app databases when you don't wipe data between different ROMs

Hi all,
I have learned a lot about Android customization in the last week since my Nexus 4 finally arrived at my door, and I have become reasonably comfortable with the processes of flashing ROMs/kernels, and backing up my phone to make sure I have something stable to return to if something happens to go wrong. However, I am still dealing with a few points of confusion that I was hoping someone could clarify for me:
1. I have CWM installed on my phone and I can use it to backup/restore images of my phone for safety. However, I have heard about other methods like Nandroid, Carbon/Helium, and Titanium Backup while browsing the forums, and have tried them only to become confused as to how they are different from using CWM backup. Could someone please explain this to me and clarify which is the best for keeping a backup of my phone stored on my computer?
2. I have noticed that when I "wipe date/factory reset" in CWM, not everything on my phone is wiped. There are still plenty of files left over from previous ROM installs when I browse my phone with Android File Transfer, and obviously the .zip files you need to flash new ROM's/kernels are left too. What exactly is deleted when do a CWM factory reset?
3. Is it necessary to wipe everything when installing a custom kernel? I have CyanogenMod 10.2 installed because it is quick and relatively bloat-free, but allows for enough customization that I can make the my phone feel the way I want it to. I want to give Matr1x/Hells-core a try, but I am tired of factory reseting everything when install a new kernel. Can I get away with just wiping Cache/Dalvik and flashing the new kernels? If not, what is the best way to avoid losing app data between ROM and kernel flashes?
4. What is the difference between the default Android superuser, CWM superuser, and SuperSU? They all seem like the same thing and it makes me nervous installing different ones.
Any information you guys can offer would be great. Thank you so much for your time !

A backup in CWM is the same as a nandroid backup. It basically take a "snapshot" of your ROM and restore it exactly as it was when backing up.
Titanium Backup is an app that backup your apps and app's data. It's recommend you only restore user's apps and data. Let Google restore any system app's data.
2. I have noticed that when I "wipe date/factory reset" in CWM, not everything on my phone is wiped. Wiping data/factory reset only wipe the data. Wiping system will wipe your ROM (system partition) Of course you don't want to wipe all the files such as the ROM you're going to flash.
There's an option to format internal sd, that will wipe EVERYTHING so unless you know how to ADB push files or sideload a ROM, DO NOT touch that.

No, just flash kernel. Some recommend wipe cache and dalvik cache after kernel flash before reboot.
4. What is the difference between the default Android superuser, CWM superuser, and SuperSU? They all seem like the same thing and it makes me nervous installing different ones.
Different app that does the same thing. Usually go with what is recommend by the ROM's dev. I ususally just leave what's included with the ROM.
Any information you guys can offer would be great. Thank you so much for your time !

Hope that answer some of your questions. I'm sure I left out some stuffs so hopefully someone else can add to it.:good:
Hi, this is a noob question but i was wondering if i wanted to install a new version of purity rom over my existing purity rom, would i have to factory wipe or just davik/cache wipe it? If i just davik/cache wipe would the rom not run as smoothly?
Always do clean flash to avoid issues later on. But technically there is nothing against flashing over a current rom. I just dont recommand it

just flash it right over, without wiping anything. dont forget gapps if needed. when you flash a rom, it automatically wipes the dalvik and cache, so you dont have to do it, or its just a repeated process. updates you never ever have to wipe. when flashing a new/different rom, thats when you have to wipe data/factory reset beforehand.

you have as much of a chance seeing issues after a clean flash as you see during a dirty flash. ive dirty flashed every single item on my n5 since the n5 came out, and on my n4 as well. not a single issue. the only time ive wiped my n4 in a year and a half was for the L preview.
@simms22: that is what my experience was. I always did a clean flash and no 'halp, xy app fc' or 'phone stuck on boot' once like most of the problems here om xda. So yeah @nightryder1, if you want to be a bad ass doing a dirty flash, do so. There is no right or wrong in this case. Just consider, that a 'noob' should aways learn and experience everything properly first before doing some dirty things

well, he is majorly right in one place.. being new, you should, no, have to learn how to do things the right way first. once you learn the proper procedure, and how to fix the little things that could go wrong, then you can worry less about the safety.
but anyways, there is no reason to wipe dalvik nor cache when flashing a rom, as it automatically gets wiped when you flash. the only reason that you would wipe dalvik and cache manually is when doing it without flashing anything, just for a little clean up
