[Q] Defy keeps trying software reset but doesn't succeed - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a Motorola defy and tried to do a factory reset under settings -> security -> factory reset.
Since then, everytime I boot up the phone it starts doing this reset but it never finishes. I even updated the whole firmware with a new one and after I booted, it keeps trying to do this reset.
Is there any way to stop it?

How should I do that? I can't get into recovery mode. I tried Power + VolDown but it always gets me into that resetting mode. When I push Power + VolUp I come to a boot loader where I can flash a new firmware. I did that as I said but it doesn't alter the situation.

Doesn't work. With no volume button or VolDown it goes straight to the reset process. Now the battery is almost empty and it seems that it doesn't charge in bootmenu mode (Power + VolUp) which is the only mode I can enter.
I'm beginning to hate this device.. Is there any other way to get into the bootloader or stop the reset mode and boot normal?

Unable to reset to factory settings, format memory, flash ROM, etc.

Hi,
My I9100 behaves quite strange.
I am unable to perform factory reset (using code from keypad or command from settings menu) - the phone reboots, goes into recovery mode where I can select wipe data/cache. Doing so has no effect on my phone, after another reboot the I9100 restarts in the same state as before factory reset.
The other thing is that I am unable to format interal memory. After using command from settings menu it says that memory is disconnected, formated, and after that all data (pics, mp3s, etc) are still available.
Also I am unable to flash ROM with any stock (tried KE4 and KE7) or aftermarket (Lightening) software. I tried Odin with and without PIT/Re-partition, also with no effect. The phone boots into previous state nevertheless confirmation in Odin that flashing completed successfully.
And the most aggravating thing is that after I reboot phone I am loosing all the recent data. The phone is booting in the state from before couple of days, with no recent messages etc. Thanks to Google account sync, the mail, calendar and so on re-sync properly, but it is no good solution since pictures, todos etc are gone after reboot.
I believe the thing started to occur after unsuccessful update to Twitter. Tried to do Market cache wipe (as suggested for similar cases to I9000 users), but also to no effect.
Have you any suggestion what else can I do?

Stuck in boot loop - No Recovery mode but can flash using download mode
I am stuck in bootloop. I cant access recovery using Vol Up + Home + Power but I can access Download mode and flash roms using ODIN. But no use. Everytime its stuck in boot loop and either the initial boot logo flashes or it stays stuck at the boot logo. Can please someone help. I read all the comments and lot of people having problem being able to get into Download mode but not in Recovery Mode. I would appreciate if someone can post a detailed response as to how to get rid of this issue.

Wipe data and cache from recovery then flash a rom, you will lose everything not backed up
There is a guide about howto fix this, search first next time

im sure there is another thread around he with 2 people in it that had the same problem as you, flashing via odin or cwm and then still ending up with the same firmware as pre flash.
i'll see if i can spot it and post it here, i dont know if they got it sorted or not tho.

Mr. veyka perhaps i didn;t drive my point home. Recovery mode is inaccessible. I cant wipe unless i get into recovery. its simple logic. i need to be able to access recovery before i can wipe

That is the thread that i had read which had the same problem as you, i havent read it all but the last few pages tend to lean towards that flash lock go ticked when flashing a ROM via odin.

Hey bud,
If you can get in to download mode then it should be ok, id try 2 things.
Go over to the the original android dev section and grab the CF kernel that was for the firmware installed, boot in to download and flash it via pda in odin, then try recovery again.
If that doesnt work, then download a full firmware from samfirmware and flash the main 3 files (Modem/CSC/Phone) and that should set your phone back to retail fresh.
ofc another reason could be your volume up button is broken

Oh, sorry, missed that, my bad
As said, flash cf root and see if that helps, if not check that your volume up key works within the os, if not flash to stock, and reset flash counter with a jig and send in for repairs.
If it does, cf root comes with an app called cwm manager that will allow you to reboot into recovery that way.

my volume up button works> the reason being you need to press volume up to get into download mode after the Vol down + home + power combo.
There are other people who have had this issue of recovery not available.

If wipe data doesn't work, look for a stock rom compatible with your device and carrier, and flash it using odin.

Friend, I had the same problem like you. The difference is that my phone could connect through Odin. I revive it as showed in my post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41195930#post41195930
I dont know if that procedure could help you, but, if yes, I'll be happy to help you!!!

yes, flashing stock kdz brings stock recovery back.
The new combination is, hold power + volume down until you see the lg logo, release shortly, then hold volume up and volume down(this will perform a factory reset).
Try connecting to a pc, turn on debuging mode. Download adb, type adb reboot recovery
or terminal emulator from play store --also reboot recovery
Hi thanks for the help the new combination is still not working do i have to get the timing perfect or what?
Well. Is it the new 20b and 20d? Power off the phone. Hold vol down and power until the lg logo, release just for a short moment and then hold just volume up and volume down.

Again thankyou so much for your help i really appreciate it.:good:
One last question how do i wipe dalvik cache without root and custom recovery?
It's the same. They changed the combination since 20b(new 20b)

You can't. You can do a factory reset from settings or manually per APP clear caches.

ROOT still shows up in download mode
I followed the very same procedure to return my phone to stock firmware, but when i enter download mode, it still shows up as "ROOT" in red in the bottom. And i'm unable to enter stock recovery or even the hard reset menu(the one where power button needs to be pressed thrice to reset).
PLEASE HELP ! I hope there is nothing seriously wrong with the device:crying:

Android process media has stopped!!!!

This happens to me also. the problem is that i cannot use my phone anymore. Every time i open the phone the "android process media has stopped" keeps on popping out. Then the next thing i'll do is to press the ok button. After that it pops out again. Then doing it or pressing the ok button several times shifts the screen off my phone to black then i can not use it anymore.
What can i do? pls help me

No bud, its the only way or you can flash your phone with PC. And that will make your data erased too...

I had a charging problem on the 6.0 beta and was able to solve it by using adb sideload and reinstalling. It fixed my problem without losing any data. Try it - hey you got nothing to lose at this point right?

Use Tethered CWM if you have a locked bootloader, or use TWRP if you have an unlocked bootloader... Do a factory reset from there (CWM or TWRP) which will preserve your internal storage (/data/media)....

phone wont stay on long enough to do anything

My note 4 wont stay on not even long enought to login to the play store, it just freezes for a second and reboots.
would it be possible to fix it with a custom rom and theres a way to install without installing any app on the phone
Hey there, you can try to do a factory data reset if the phone boots into recovery mode.
NOTE: A factory data reset will wipe the whole device including the internal storage.
To enter into recovery mode, power off the phone. Then, hold the vol up + home + power buttons together till you see the Samsung splash screen. When the splash screen comes, release the power button and continue holding the volume up and home buttons till it boots into recovery.
Once it's in recovery mode, you can use the volume down button to scroll to the 'Wipe Data/ Factory Data Reset' and then hit the power button to select the option.

Okay. Does it boot into Download Mode?
To enter into download mode, power down the phone. Similar to the recovery boot process. Just that instead of the volume up button, you need to hold the volume down button.
If it does boot into download mode. Does it stay on or give you the same problem?

Maybe you can try installing the firmware through Odin. It may fix things. Else it could be an eMMC failure.
It could be a battery problem. I had kinda the same issues (random reboots that became more and more frequent and at some point the phone barely booted). So i ordered a new battery and problem is solved, phone is up and running again. If you can, try another battery just to be sure that this is your case. Also, the worst scenario is that some people reported random reboots when emmc memory failed. I hope this is not your case
