If I rooted my nexus 4, flashed cm10.1 and Franco kernel on it and over clocked the GPU, would this set up be good for gaming or will I break my phone? Also what other performance tweaks could you guys recommend me? Thanks in advance
Get the Franco kernel updater application and you'll have all the tweaks you need. No it won't damage your phone.

You don't need to overclock the phone. It's fast enough to run everything smooth. You will only drain more battery... Oh, download Franco's app, like he said earlier, totally worth it.

It doesn't sound like you know what you're doing so please don't overclock the GPU. There's no need to do such a thing.

Hi all,
I am using a rooted n7.
I have over clocked my galaxy s2 to 1.5ghz before, but I am not sure what is a safe level to over clock the n7 to.
What is a is is for battery life and performance?
And which kernel do u guys recommend
?
Thanks in advance

I run trinity kernel on my Gnex and N7 and on my N7 I keep it stock speeds because I've seen no reason to realistically OC it. Most of the improvements I see are from the kernel software changes over stock. You can OC to 1.6 safely but I'm not sure of the power usage difference but I'm pretty sure the loss in power isn't worth the gain from OCing.

I have mine at 1.6 just for the hell of it, I get a good 4 or 5 hours of continuous usage out of it.

For the benefit of the community, can you tell us any major changes at 1.6 GHz?
Is there anything noticeably faster?
Hi, I have a related question but can't post since I'm new.
Using the glazed rom which i like but it apparently has gpu overclock. I would like to know how to adjust that back to stock setting or at least see what it currently is. I found the CPU section but there is no gpu I can see.
Is there a tool I can use?
Sorry for the hijack...at least its sort of on topic
IMO over clocking is a gimmick, its the kernel build

My thoughts exactly. I play some light games and web browse on my Nexus 7.
For those purposes, my Nexus 7 is already extremely fast, so I don't think I would be able to notice if it was over clocked.
But I guess it depends, maybe there's a big difference when running GPU heavy games.
I have OC mine upto 1640 MHz for bench marking alone for half and hour or probably more and it went fine although the tablet was getting warmer more than usual.

Hi,
I decided to flash trinity kernel.
I am currently OC to 1.5yghz, is that a safe level to keep it at full time? Or can that burn the cpu out?
Thanks again
Cheers
Corey
Edit,
I over clocked my galaxy s2 ages ago, and I noticed a huge difference in performance.
So that is why I want to over clock my n7 too lol

there is no such thing as a safe overclock. overclocking, by nature, carries some risk. that said, i havent seen anyone brick their device from overclocking.

Just wondering
Why do you feel the need to OC?
I go to 1.6 but use the Trinity App to go back to stock when OC not needed
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I have not over clocked the Nexus 7 yet but one way to test your devices max is to use setcpu. Make sure you do not have "set on boot" option selected. Then step up your cpu. If your cpu can not handle the over clock it will force restart. If you do not have the set at boot selected it will revert back to the last good state on restart.
Each device is different on what it can handle for over clock.

To be honest I doubt you'll notice much increase from oc the CPU since the CPU already is so powerful nothing pushes it to max really.
Only thing worth overclocking is GPU really. And at that, your not going to notice a difference unless your playing some intense games.
Hi all,
My Nexus 7 is fastboot unlocked and rooted.
Is it possible to underclock Nexus 7 without using custom rom?
I read about SetCPU app, does it work properly with Nexus 7?
I was thinking to underclock to 1.0 ghz in order to gain more battery life.
Please share your opinion if you have done it.
Thanks

Underclocking wont make that much of a different. You can undervolt it (same speed less volts being used)

Wasn't the primary reason google underclocked this tablet was to save battery?

Did you solve your issue somehow?
I want my max clock at 1 GHz too to save more battery.
You don't need a custom ROM; only a custom kernel. You can probably use SetCPU or whatever app the dev recommends. But as the above user said, you could undervolt instead. If you stay at 1.3 GHz but you use the voltage for 1.0 GHz, you will save the same amount of power (if those settings are even stable...) as underclocking it.
What do you guys use to monitor and control the voltage of your cpus of your nexus 4 after flashing the Franco kernel?

Franco personally is not a fan of undervolting. He'll probably make sure the kernel is stable before he adds the undervolting feature. There's been a lot of ironing out going on with the kernel and adding undervolting capabilities would probably cause more trouble if its implemented now.

Hi
Am just moving from an iphone to the nexus 4 and am loving it <3
I already rooted the device
And I was just wondering about the best custom rom for the nexus 4
Am looking for a better battery life and less overheating without affecting the performance of the device
Thnx in advance

`Best off`posts not allowed. I use Franco kernel myself and undervolted -100mV for cooler cpu and all is running great. Best thing to do is try out some kernels for yourself.

K guys.. I am not sure if its 4.3 or something else.. Can someone confirm.. I used to get 18000+ on my 4.2 n4 and over 24000 with faux overclocking kernels for 4.2
Now i am getting 14000 - 16000.. With 4.3..

you can use custom rom/kernel or some tweaks so you'll get over 23k

Try the S4 dalvik patch that's floating around here. Boosted my score to 20k+ on PA 3.99 with stock PA kernel at 1512/1512.
Using this combo as my daily driver since a week and no problems so far.

What kind of numbers did you get before the mod?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Around 16-17k if I remember correctly. Also don't forget that heat throttling is pretty aggressive on the N4. So make sure your device has cooled down before the next run.
Pro tip: put your N4 onto a cold ceran stove when benchmarking. They're made to conduct heat efficiently and will keep your device cool
Well I wouldn't give those numbers too much credit...
they represent more the settings that you enter, than device performance.
I for instance use the latest franco Kernel. With the settings I use every day (interactive governor, default clocks), I get arount 15-18k in antutu. But the device feels as snappy as hell in normal usage and gaming.
If I switch to performance governor, ramping the minimal and maximal cpu clock up to 1512MHZ while raising the cpu throttling from 65 to 90° I reach antutu scores in the range of 20-22k.
But I obviously would never ever use these settings every day.
That beeing said, these numbers do not really represent how the devices behaves in every day usage, which is much more important to me than any number, a benchmark puts out.

I have a couple of questions:
It's your phone still working like it should?
Do you really care about the scores you get to be able to enjoy your N4?
Do you think the scores of benchmark really say everything about your phone?
If you compare a S4 or M7 with a N4, and in one test (by chance) you get the same scores, do you think your N4 has the same power as a S4 or M7?
Stop worrying about benchmark scores, I used to be like that bench-marking all the time, at the end I just got tired of it!!!
Now I just enjoy my phone the way it is.
Good luck!!!
CM-10.2 and CM kernel got 20728

btw. Antutu 4 score: 21336
Benchmarks are useless, its how the device feels when using it what matters.
