Yes it's with terminal emulator.
Have a look here for the command to use.
It can be used with any recovery.img, but you'll need root for the command to work.

yes, all same. use "Terminal Emulator" app from Play Store by Jack Palevich, you need root and busybox. open it, type "su" then enter, and then type again "dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p21 of=/storage/sdcard0/stockrecovery.img".. then an image file of your backuped recovery was created in your sdcard.. you can change the path of the "of"
HEY TYS0N!! THIS IS MY REPORT: I've flashed your "NON TOUCH CWM - the md5 file" with ODIN 3.07 and I got ONLY the external sd card shown in recovery but labeled as internal (I TRIED REBOOT but still same).. I was panicing.. then I flashed root with it.. and change my recovery as soon as it finished boot with "dd" command with the official one. I reboot to the *official* recovery, then got it all worked..
to the point: does the files that you provided is different?? or any damage in your files? do you got it with your phone working? if there's any, please change.. what's dangerous that people using your files and get their device brick.

Recovery is the same for all versions. Using triangle away might help get your official status back if you triggered the custom binary count by flashing recovery through Odin.
Depends on what you've done to get your status modified.

Can someone please direct me to the a step by step guide on how to Root and put CM7 on the Nexus S i9020a variant? Most of the stickies are for the T-mobile version and Its getting to be a bit confusing on which guide to follow. Please help this noobie!!!
use gingerbreak then rom manager it's that simple
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1044765
Quick note once you install CM7 do not use the 2g/3g feature it will break your 3g
Break 3g? as in damage it permanently? Thanks for the link for gingerbreak so basically that will root my nexus s then I can install CM 7 with out any special instructions since it has different radio compared to the tmobile version?
i used gingerbreak then rom manager to install clockwork recovery and CM7. Do some reading the 3g bug for I9020A has been discussed a few times. Just stay away from the 2g/3g toggle and everything will be fine. I don't think it permanently breaks it just is a pain in the A to fix. I have a I9020A and this was the simplest way I've found.
don't we have to flash a clockwork compatible kernel first, before flashing cm7?
Also, doesn't clockwork rom manager fail on sns? I have cwr from the main stickies, but rom manager doesn't see it (it works), and can't download roms, unless cwr from rom manager, which I heard fails.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
So I downloaded CM7 7.0.2 - and gapps - flashed in order (nandroid first) and voila! no hastle! This ROM is great!
No, those are the only steps i took
CM7 comes with its own AOSP kernel. Just flash the rom, you'll get the kernel bundled. (Of course you can always use a great kernel from the developers thread) don't forget to flash gapps.

He means don't use the 2g/3g toggle widget as that will cause some problems, it hasn't been fixed yet. If you do want to change it though, do it manually through the settings.

I tried using gingerbreak on my i9020a but it runs for longer than 15 mins so I guess it doesn't work. What are my other options for rooting?
edit: I guess it's because I installed 2.3.6.. is it possible to downgrade easily?

Follow one of the root guides, all you really need to do is unlock the bootloader and install Clockwork Recovery.
Once that is done, download the zip for cm7 and use CWM to flash it.

Agreed, but it's a matter of getting the correct CWM image for our phones. Also, for people who are setting up their phones for the first time, the drivers needed for fastboot need to be installed, fastboot/SDK needs to be downloaded etc...
Hence why i referenced the rooting guides.

Yep, it's just the color you want your recovery to be. I flashed the cyan a couple of days ago for somebody else and no issues.. typical clockwork recovery
So I flashed the recovery file, but when I boot into recovery now, there's just the triangle with the ! in it and nothing happens.. did I do something wrong?

Hi there,
yesterday succesfully rooted my device using the insecure boot image.
Today booted and also flashed the new CWM recovery image but now, when booting into recovery only get an android logo and the text "no command" ?
Any ideas ? Flashed back to original recovery image but no change either ?
Root remains though and working fine.
Thanks

I'm having the "no command" message as well. I've flashed CWM 6.0.2.3 no-touch (following this guide), and it doesn't seem to be sticking. It'll work the first time, but then revert to the "no command" screen. I've also tried flashing the stock recovery, and then I receive the same message. I have an unlocked bootloader, and I managed root via the same guide. Anybody have any ideas?

From efrants android 101 sticky:
I just flashed CWM, but every time I try to boot into CWM, I keep seeing the stock recovery. Why?
If you updated your Android build using an OTA update file (either manually or over-the-air), the update placed two files on your device that re-flash the stock recovery every time you reboot your device. These two files are:
/system/etc/install-recovery.sh <== this is the script that installs the patch file
/system/recovery-from-boot.p <== this is the patch
You have to rename (or delete) one or both of them, then re-flash your custom recovery. Now it will stick.

Hi guys,
I just want to ask you how could I replace TWRP Recovery with CWM on my LG G2 D802 International? Are there any issue/incompatibility?
I have rooted and installed TWRP, but I have issue with installing CyanogenMod 10.2 Stable (I checked MD5 and downloaded it many times): as I understand is a problem of TWRP compatibility.

It depends on what you download. If you download the recovery.img you can use the app "flashify" to flash the recovery, or if you download a flashable .zip then flash it in recovery then reboot recovery.

I'm not 100% if thats a "lokified" recovery or not. I don't think you'll hurt anything by flashing it. If you can't flash something using that recovery then there is an issue and you can flash another recovery.

Otherwise, there is also the app called ROM Manger which should automatically flash the CWM.
The important thing is that it does not create problems between recovery.

Use above app to backup your stock recovery before flashing it.
Instructions to flash:

3. Download attached file and copy it to your phone.
4.Select 'Flash Recovery' option.
5. Select 'from storage' and select it from your phone.
6. flash it.

ROM manager doesn't have any recovery for our phone. So it's pretty much useless except for launching into recovery.

EXTRACTED FROM OFFICIAL XT 1022 4.4.4 FIRMWARE......
BUT IT SHOULD WORK ON OTHERS TOO.....
If you have rooted your device once....
Only full unroot from SuperSU and flashing this recovery will not work....
YOU HAVE TO FLASH FULL FIRMWARE....
OTHERWISE OTA UPDATE WILL FAIL....(because after rooting our build.prop gets little edited....which will cause problems)
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS....
1. DOWNLOAD "RECOVERY.ZIP".
2. U MUST HAVE mfastboot/fastboot AND adb tools EXTRACTED IN A FOLDER ON YOUR PC.
3. EXTRACT RECOVERY.ZIP IN THE SAME FOLDER.
4. PUT YOU PHONE IN BOOTLOADER MODE.
5. CONNECT IT TO PC AND OPEN THAT FOLDER.
6. OPEN CMD WINDOW HERE BY PRESSING SHIFT+RIGHT CLICK.
7. ENTER FOLLOWING COMMAND.
mfastboot flash recovery recovery.img
the command will result in okay...
u r done.....
THANK YOU...

curiosity, how you extract the recovery from original firmware?
I have used flashify to flash stock recovery before. It seemed to have worked. Its super easy as well and requires no computer. Try at your own risk.

If you need your stock recovery your already rooted and have a custom recovery in place. So therefore your device has an unlocked boot loader. Flashify can flash recovery IMG without even powering into recovery.

I don't know for sure, but @lost101 can possibly help you with that. It will most likely require you to pull it using an adb command.
