I checked with Root Checker app what's happening with root, and get this information: Sorry! This device does not have proper root access????
I think you have to root your phone again. you probably installed an unrooted stock rom.

I don't think there's any expressway to root. but there were some other rooting guides as well. you can try this or this
Win 7 drivers should also work on win 8. If not try compatibility mode.

Hello,
I am having real problems with my phone. I was trying to root the phone and I am stuck. I have S=off on the HBOOT screen, android version 2.2, software version 1.14.531.1.
I am not able to perform Visionary temp root, can't load clockwork recovery, and can't install Busybox. When I try SU within terminal, I get the error "must be suid to work properly".
When I try to install Busybox, I get the error "The application failed either becasue you device is not NAND unlocked or we were unable to remount".
I cant install ClockWork recovery..I get the error "an error occured while trying to run privilidged commands"
I have tried everything which is probably why I am stuck. I tried to force the update to 2.2.1 but won't work. The phone goes thru the motions of updating boot, radio, etc...However, still the same results are its done. THe phone stays on 2.2.
I have tried doing all of the root methods avail: Using Visonary, rage, etc... None of them will work.
Can anybody offer me advice to get root back so I can 1. install a recovery and then install another rom? I need a way to basically put the phone back to factory installed software and start fresh.
Try this worked perfectly for me. also make sure you have ADB installed and working properly before attempting root.

if you want to go back to stock follow the downgrade thread (linked in the thread about forcing the update) then follow the one linked above me here... it's faster than my forcing the update method (once you get radio s-off and the eng boot loader you can actually just flash the update.zip from my thread....)
EDIT: and in the future please post in the proper section or reply in the thread of the guide you're having problems with.
Thank you for trying to quickly help me. I started to follow the instrucions for downgrading and got stuck at the ADB Shell command. Within the Shell, I typed SU and got the following error "must be usid to work properly". Can you please offer any advice to get around this error?
Thanks,
Lance
to be suid you have to have temp or full root access. my sugestion would be to start the process from scratch. have you tried the visionary method?
i cant post the link to the other forum but its readily availible if you google it.
i didnt see the download link in the site i found so if you need the file PM me your email and ill send it back to you
Hello,
Yes, I did try Visonary and will not get SU working. The S=off is already showing. However, no matter what I do, I can't get SU to work. The device appears to be rooted but won't allow any advanced permisson comands to be used such as SU. I have tried re-installing superuser. that didn't help either.
launch the current version of SU you have on your phone and select settings scroll to the bottom of the page and under "superuser Information" you should see "Su binary Vx.x.x-xx) what is the version #?
Click on that and see if it updates the version if it does update try rebooting launch terminal and retry SU
Hello,
I checked the version of SU and did find there is an update. I tried to install and got the followng error 'An error occured and su was not updated. a zip file has been placed on your sdcard. please reboot into recovery and flash it".
The problem is that I can't get into recovery as I get the red exlimation mark. I can't find a way to install a recovery program because of permission issues.
Any further suggestions?
Please post questions in Q&A section.

How in the first place you get the s=off. In order to get s-off you need root! Is also known that to boot into recovery thou need to try several times before its locks! The better way to deal woth it is reading! The root method in the dev section help a lot! Read, read! That's the better way to learn! If you are in eng hboot and s= off there's a possibility that you only need to reboot into recovery several times! Other than that just read with patience!

My advice (without trying to hurt feelings too much) is DON'T ROOT. You obviously don't really know your way around Android too well at this point. I would familiarize yourself with everything before diving in head first.
Despite popular belief, having root does NOT in fact make you cooler.
WAAAY too many new users are trying to root because they think it's cool or heard it's cool. You need to learn your device first.

If you have S=Off on your phone already, your best bet would be to flash Clockwork recovery through FASTBOOT.
If you are unsure of how to do this, refer to this link from the Cyanogen Wiki:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Fastboot
The page will point you in the right direction for everything that you need.
Have the ROM that you want to install on your SD Card because FASTBOOT will probably not allow you to directly flash all the other partitions, but it will at least allow you to flash recovery, then boot into Clockwork and Install a new ROM.
Hi there everyone,
I want to root my Desire HD, but I don't want to install any custom roms, radios, etc. I only want to root my HD so I can install apps that require root. I see no advantage in installing any custom ROMs, so I want to leave that alone.
What's the best way to go about this? I've found this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834427. Do I need to do anything else, except what is in this guide? I'm terrified of bricking my phone!
Could I brick my device if I made a mistake with the above guide, or S-OFF?
Thanks in advance,
Alex
Sorry for the question (no doubt it's been asked before), I've rooted my old HTC Hero before, found that easy, but this I'm confused!
Hi there. I'm actually quite a noob at all this since rooting is all new to me but seems you and I went after similar threads because I also read that guide to rooting the DHD at first. But after some further reading I discovered this is actually a much more difficult method of rooting (maybe because it's older?).
It will really, really help to look in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846248 as it explains so much and has many useful links.
But in answer to your question read this guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076 A much easier method of rooting =)
Good luck.

After I've ran that step - do I have permroot and I don't need to do anything else? I only want root, not custom ROM's.
I'm scared of doing the permroot, sounds like I'll break my phone if I even attempt it! Is there any way to ensure it will work?
Yeh you will be perma rooted if you follow the steps. About ensuring it will work, this is something I am now looking into myself. I'm getting the impression that it's possible to create a copy of the stock rom even without the perma root and using that to do a recovery in the event of a root failure. Though I would have thought perma root would have been needed to do a recovery in the first place....
I've got a thread below yours where I'm still trying to get a clear answer as to how to do all that. If I find out I'll let u know =P

By "if you follow the steps" - do you mean I only have to follow step 1 for perm root? Or more than that?
Sorry for all the questions, I really do appreciate your help, thanks!
And also - if it fails, the stock WWE RUU can be flashed to restore the phone, can't it?
EDIT: Followed step one, restarted device and everything - perm root stays. Thanks for all your help mate!

Go all way through these steps from 1.1 to 1.6. Once you've done 1.6 your phone should be rooted. Just download the terminal emulator from the market and do that last thing that is mentioned to test the perma rooting. If that works then your good.
Oh just so you know the temp root option in Visionary is apparently completely safe and won't harm nothing because it makes no changes to the system partition.
Not sure about the WWE RUU. I'm not sure it will be compatible with your current ROM (Only thing I do know is that if it's older then your current it won't work). Don't know how to flash it either tbh, that's something I ain't found out yet =P
Hi,
I have here a new Desire Z and I am trying to root it.
I have followed this good guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228
Everything worked fine. After typing the command "/data/local/tmp/rage" I get the "Childs XXXX forked" message.
Then I go to menu-Reset.
The Terminal Emulator closes. I try to open it again there appears a crash message.
Ok now I try to open it again and nothing happens. The Emulator did not open again and no error message appear.
I have to mention that I have made an OTA update right after unboxing. Can this be the problem? I have 2.2.1 now.
Can anyone help me please.

Thank you very much.
I have to read more and more
You complicated things by accepting the OTA.
You will first have to downgrade to 1.34 to be able to root and get S_Off
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261
Then you can go two ways,
- Install a - rooted -custom rom (e.g. Virtuous).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837042
or
- Upgrade to stock 1.72 by accepting the OTA update or applying this RUU :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=899584
If you go with stock 1.72, you will have to root again :

HTH and Good Luck.

You have to follow steps to unlock the bootloader (achieving S-off) before perm root will stick. Read the thread on achieving S-off. Don't do anything you don't fully understand, so read a lot. Afaik visionary does not perm root with one click without first having an unlocked bootloader.
EDIT: Read the resource bible. It's a sticky in the dev forum.

If you have s-off and you have the eng 2007 bootloader, you're rooted. Make sure you have the superuser app installed to your phone. If not, you can get it from the market. You need it to gain root privileges in apps. If you have superuser you can test root by opening terminal emulator. Type su and hit enter. If you get a root request confirm it. The $ symbol should change to #.
You shouldn't need visionary anymore. Once you confirm root, uninstall it.
Swyped on my rooted MyTouch4G
But without doing "permroot" in visionary, it's not permanent, correct? Cause I want it permanent, not temp.
Yes I have superuser installed.

Try what I said with terminal. If you type su and hit enter, you should see a #. If you do, congrats. Reboot and test terminal su command to see if your root sticks. Visionary won't tell you if you're rooted.
Swyped on my rooted MyTouch4G
Ok I redid everything again (without doing "attempt permroot") and did what you said and the $ changed to #...however, when I first did the temp root, and then went into terminal to do the:
- su
- "cd /data/local" etc....it changed from a $ to a # as well then...before I got to the end and rebooted.
So I am permrooted then and can change roms? Why didn't I have to do "attempt permroot" in visionary?

Uh, that's not a website!
Like I said, you were already rooted. When you attempt perm root with Visionary, I don't think it tells you anything. Just make sure your root sticks by rebooting and then typing su in terminal. If you get the #, you can uninstall Visionary.
As for flashing ROMs: You need to flash a new recovery in order to make Nandroid backups and flash ROMs. Clockwork ROM Manager from the market will allow you to flash Clockwork Recovery on your phone. I don't know how much experience you have with flashing ROMs in general, but if you're a novice in any way I wouldn't start changing your system just yet. Read the resource bible, lurk the developer threads, and get a firm grasp on what you are doing. Get familiar with ADB and Fastboot. Be totally confident in your knowledge. You can still brick your phone or at the very least give yourself an unneeded heart attack and hours of troubleshooting sh!t.
Resource Bible
Good luck and congrats on root!
Yeah I am looking at the "how to flash a rom for noobs" thread out of the resource bible...it says "In the hboot menu select recovery and then the phone will restart. You will get a phone with yellow triangle error."
I select recovery and another screen came up regarding the clockwork with a bunch of options, it didn't restart. And when I selected the option that said "reboot" it did, but I didn't get a yellow triangle error
Any ideas there?
Sounds to me you already have Clockwork Recovery installed. You must have done that without knowing it. Beats me. I you go into HBOOT and select Recovery the phone will shut off and boot into recovery mode. If you got Clockwork Recovery version 2.x.x.x (with green typeface), that just means you have Clockwork recovery installed and can flash Froyo based ROMs (like Iced Glacier), make Nandroid backups, and a bunch of other stuff you probably shouldn't mess with.
Just know that you CANNOT flash Gingerbread based ROMs (like CyanogenMod 7) with CW v. 2.x.x.x
You need CW v. 3.x.x.x to use gingy ROMs.
I PM'd ya, but no when I hboot and hit recovery, it doesn't reboot, it goes to "clockwork mod recovery v2.5.1.2

I'm having the same issue as the OP. I'm quoting because I had a permroot stick with s-on on my previous MT4G. (I just had it replaced, damn power button)
Explain please? Why would it work on one but not the other?
I would have posted this in the development forum in the thread that had this technique, but I don't have enough posts yet or something?
Anyway, I have S=off, and visionary temp root works fine. But permroot in visionary r14 doesn't work, it just flashes like the button is pushed then does nothing, like I didn't even hit it. So I need to run the temp root everytime my phone starts up.
I didn't setup the engineer bootloader yet, should I do that?
Does r11 work better?
What is the next step to get permroot to work?

no need of shell root first. Directly hitting the root also gives permaroot.
And go with PC49IMG process or fastboot flash recovery process for custom recovery. Donot use unrevoked.
