[Q] Nexus 7 USB connectivity to Windows XP SP3

Guys, I know i am repeating again the question but despite reading 15-20 posts and uncountable articles, I am still not able to get my nexus 7 working with the Windows XP SP3.
1) To start with, I downloaded the google drivers from ASUS and the MTP Porting Kit from microsoft.When i plug in the device with USB Debugging on, Windows shows 3 new devices- NEXUS 7 & Android ADB Interface.. and ofcourse Windows XP can not find the drivers for any. So i open the device manager and it shows Nexus 7 under unidentified devices. I install the drivers for ADB interface (the ones i downloaded from Asus) and the device becomes ready to use. But there is no option to browse the device from my computer or portable devices. Then i switch the debugging on, and now there is a new device- MTP under unidentified devices. Then i install the MTP Porting Kit, but the MTP device still shows a problem with the driver.
2) The second part of the problem is that all this did not work and even my WMP11 does not recognise the Nexus 7.
The device is just connected and charging!!! What am i doing wrong here???

It worked, but the MTP keeps popping up for installation again and again.. and I am STILL NOT ABLE TO SEE MY DEVICE

I have exactly the same problem with my windows xp laptop it was OK until I wiped my laptop and reinstalled xp SP1-3 I can't seem to solve it either.

What worked?
Try to delete the precompiled inf-file 'C:\WINDOWS\inf\wpdmtp.pnf', edit the 'C:\WINDOWS\inf\wpdmtp.inf' (see link in the post in the top...), open the XP device-manager, right-click in the yellow '!' and 'update driver'...

Do you have edit the 'C:\WINDOWS\inf\wpdmtp.inf'?

I had a lot of problems myself getting Windows XP to work with my Nexus 7 as well... eventually I discovered that installing the latest version of Windows Media Player fixed the problem.
I wrote up a post on this issue on another forum (Sorry, XDA - this was before I discovered you guys), back in December of last year.

(Actually, this whole thread is worth reading.)
The only nuisance factor is having to remember to re-enable USB debugging (Titanium Backup needs USB debugging enabled, and complains if itsn't) AFTER I've run some MTP Windows XP related file backups (USB debugging needs to be disabled, or MTP won't work)...
....or at least that is my experience.

I have the same issue on windows XP with Nexus 7. I tried everything what was suggested and nothing is working.
I have Windows XP SP3 with WMP11 and MTP porting kit installed as well. the device is recognized and driver is instaled fine. But it's not visible on "my computer" in MTP mode. I tried to turn on usb debugging and still device is invisible in windows explorer, the same is when usb debugging is turoned off.
When device is in PTP mode it appears in "my computer" and i'm able to browse it and see all pictures and photos.
How can i browse my device in MTP mode and copy files there? Please reply if anybody knows what to do to fix this issue.

Recently got a 2012 Nexus 7 from a retailer selling this model with updated Android at very attractive price, and initially able to connect to computer so promptly rooted the device with the Nexus Root Toolkit from Wugfresh Development (in this forum), afterwards had same problems with not being able to read / transfer files.
Tried every fix I could find in other threads, and although device manager saying that connected as 'ADB Device' with debugging on, or 'Google Nexus 7 ADB Device' with MTP on and debugging off, still stuck with no access.
Looking closer at the MTP configuration ('Google Nexus 7 ADB Device') under device manager noticed that details listed manufacturer as 'ClockWorkMod' , and eventually that this originated within a Windows\Inf file titled 'oem60'.
I cut and pasted the 'oem60' file to another directory (to keep it safe just in case this upset something else) then on reconnecting the Nexus 7 as MPT with debugging off, device manager found and installed the correct driver at last. Now able to see and transfer files to / from it.
Presumably could alter the relevant lines in the 'oem60' file, which aren't hard to find, and put it back to original directory, but my other devices also working fine so not done so as yet.

Nexus 4 appears as unknown device

Hello, I am trying to connect my nexus 4 to my computer to put some music on. This used to work, but now it is being detected as an unknown device. I tried updating the drivers to the Universal Naked driver, but it just says the best driver is already installed. I tried with USB debugging on and off, no difference. Also tried 2 different usb cables.
Cyanogenmod Version: 10.1.1-mako
Build: JDQ39E

What OS are you using? Windows? Mac? A linux distro?
Also, are you sure you're using MTP instead of PTP (Settings > Storage > menu > Usb Computer Connection) ?
You can try to install google's drivers from the android sdk as well.

I am using Windows 7, it was set to PTP, I just set to MTP, but it still does the same thing. I have turned off my USB debugging in the developer menu as well.

I know this is a silly thing to ask, but have you tried rebooting your phone? Something like this happened to me before and a reboot fixed it.
Also, if you have a custom kernel, check that you have USB fast charge disabled. And after that fails, try installing google's drivers. Sorry, I'm just spouting out random ideas at this point.

Use trickster mod and go to the Kernel Specific page. If fast charge is ticked off, there's not much we can do from there.

Hmm I am in the trickster mod on the kernel specific screen, but I don't see anything about USB fast charge Where might I get googles drivers? I can't seem to install any drivers because as soon as I uninstall the unknown device, it auto installs some drivers.

So I tried installing the newest Franco kernel Milestone (3), and the USB fast charge is off. I also tried installing a different CM mod, but there is no difference. I also tried installing the universal you gave me, but that didn't work, and i installed the google driver from SDK and that didn't work.
I don't know what else to do...

Hi, try to completly unninstall ALL drivers for nexus, samsung or android related, than install official drivers for nexus 4 and then connect nexus 4. Should work.

I tried that, no luck...I don't know what else to do, I have tried 3 different cables. I tried using the drivers that come with the nexus 4 toolkit, but no luck. It charges when plugged in, but i get nothing else. Also it seems like half the time its not even in the device manager as an unrecognized device, and then it intermittently pops up a window saying unrecognized device detected... maybe my USB port is broken on the phone?
Is there something simple I have overlooked to get 4.2.2 to work with my computer?

Have you managed to solve this? I'm facing almost the same problem!

No, I tried for hours with no luck. I am glad I am not the only one, hopefully a solution will come to us. I have been using airdroid to transfer files from my phone in the mean time.

Im also having the same issue except my computer only recognizes my phone when its connected as a camera.

I am having a similar problem with my daughter's Nexus 4 phone, which is not rooted nor unlocked - it is still completely stock. It was just updated to Android 4.3, however I can't say that this is the cause of the problem because she never attempted to connect her phone to the desktop machine before.
I have a Windows 7 x64 box at home, and spent over two hours last night trying to get the computer to correctly recognize the Nexus 4 phone. I was hoping that the standard MTP Windows driver would handle it perfectly, but no luck. I tried the Google usb drivers, and the ADB interface was recognized, but still no access to the internal storage. I then gave the Naked Drivers a try, and no joy there either.
I am beginning to suspect that the MTP drivers on my desktop are munged, but do not relish the thought of a Win 7 wipe and reinstall.
Anyone else have any ideas?

I am having a similar problem where I have USB storage set to MTP and Windows doesn't pick it up, whereas PTP Windows will pick up but I can't access any folders other than the camera related folders like DCIM.
So my workaround is doing it the old fashioned way through CMD in windows using adb push.
Example:
Assuming you have all the stuff you want to transfer in a folder called stuff, adb is located in C:\adb, and your folder known as stuff is also in C:\adb:
C:\adb>adb push stuff /data/media/0
The above command starting from the ">" will transfer all files in the folder called stuff to the root of /sdcard. In the N4, /sdcard is symbolically linked to /data/media/0.
Of course you need USB debugging enabled for this to work...

Device Manager (Hopefully this helps)
In the start menu type device manager, in that window you should see android and or something similar at the top. You want to drop the menu down and right click what should say Google ADB Interface and delete it, make sure you check the confirmation box. After reboot your computer! Once booted plug your phone in a viola!!!

I can open device manager but there in no Android anything listed. All that comes up when I plug my phone in is 'unrecognized usb device'. I have 5 different cable I have tired. The OS will only bring up the usb error in a USB 3.0 port. It will not do anything if I use the 2.0 port.
I have gone and tried to manually update the drivers through the device manager but when I select the drivers from Android SKD or any of the other driver packs I get an error that it is not a x64 driver.
I found one suggestion about modding the driver to include the device but windows will not even recognize the device other than a unknown usb.
I'm going to have a bricked computer soon. Any help would be appreciated.

First, Google universal naked drivers xda. Try those. If they don't work go into device manager and go to where it says let me choose drivers from my computer. Then look for the android composite adb interface.
If you're on win 8 you'll need to allow unsigned drivers. Google how to do that

Windows 7x64 on all machines. I am trying this on 2 work computers and getting the same result. I have 2 issues that I think are the root of the issue.
#1 is the phone doesn't do anything in USB debug mode. I keep seeing references to having to approve the computer connection but I haven't seen that yet. I have tired 9 usb ports. 6 on my main computer will not bring anything, not even the usb drive. 3 on the labtop will only bring up a 'unrecognized usb drive'.
#2 is the computer will not recognize the device in anything other than a 'unrecognized usb drive' (UUD). Everyone keeps mentioning the Android Composite ADB interface. It's not there, it doesn't show up or as an option. I can go into the device manager and find the UUD and try and update the driver via the manual method with a disk but it doesn't list any type of hardware that is related to Android or ADB.

Hello,
"#1 is the phone doesn't do anything in USB debug mode." This is normal!
How I experienced the USB debugging option is that, if turned ON:
1. The Nexus does not appear in my Windows env
2. BUT when in recovery mode, I can use the "adb" commands
If USB debugging turned OFF:
1. Then I CAN see the Nexus in my Windows env
2. BUT I cannot use the "adb" commands in recovery mode.
So you definitely need to have the USB debugging option turned off if you want to see your nexus in Windows, IMO

I think you really have an issue with the drivers. I would install the Google USB drivers. Maybe a bit heavy but then you can be sure that drivers are fine:

Nexus 4 won't connect to PC.

Hello, i have a very weird problem. My nexus 4 cant connect to pc as mass storage device.. It worked fine like 4 days ago.. I dont know what happened or what else i can try.. Already tried: usb debugging on/off, factory reset, usb settings in storage menu, different usb port, NOTHING HELPED! There are another weird thing that i spoted is that it only charges through usb when i have nothing selected in storage>usb connections menu, as soon as i try to select mtp or camera it stops from charging and nothing happens. Same problem for AC charging it wont charge when theres mtp or camera selected, and only charges as USB... I'm confused.. Are there any ways to get it working again?

I'm having the same problem.. I've just installed Windows 7 64 bit but it sees my Nexus 4 like Unknown Device.. I uninstalling the drivers and re installing them using Nexus Root Toolkit but no result for now..:crying:

Do you have a ROM or anything installed? I know with PA its a problem at the moment at times. A little more info would be nice. I never had a problem with Windows 7. I'm on Windows 8 now and i had an issue at first with it not showing up at times. But it seems to be fine now.

Just go in
Settings,
Dev options (if you not have it go in phone informations and press many times in row the Build Number, this activate Dev options)
and Disable USB Debugging,
then reconnect your phone, and the computer will see it

USB debbuging isnt working. i have no ROMS, stock android 4.3. And yes, now im running WIN 8, previuosly had 7, the problem occured after installing 8 and trying to plug it in. Its not showing in my computer neither in device Manager. I doesnt make any difference with, or without it pluged in, the only difference is that it will start charging, but then again ONLY when i disable everyting in storage>usb connections.

do you have a fast charge app installed? it sounds like it's an issue related to fast charging via USB. if it's enabled you can't access anything on the phone via usb, but i think that requires to at least be rooted.

I'm on last PA 3.99-Rc1 and I just found out that if I go in Setting-Memory the appilcation shutdown .-. Never had this issue before .-.

Nothing, just read that it's a issue with PA while using last Franco Kernel nightly XD I'm going back to windows vista 32bit, so I believe the problem connecting my nexus 4 won't be any more an issue (Going back to Vista because for daily use it worked perfectly and every thing worked fine with the drivers, Windows 7 it's better, but too many issues with drivers bla bla bla XD) :laugh:

I have always used the Windows Driver from the Google SDK (Google USB Driver- As of today, Revision 8) for my Windows 7 64 bit computer and have never had a problem. More importantly there is an Update Manager that comes with the SDK, that when you run, notifies you of newer Windows drivers as they are released. That way as Google issues newer OS builds or Windows issues a new OS, I know that not only my driver but my platform tools aka fastboot/adb/etc. (As of today, Revision 18.0.1) will always be compatible. The problem with these toolkits and driver downloads all over the place on these forums is that you have know idea how old the internals are. The other obvious thing to check is a bad or intermittently bad USB cable. Also make sure "MTP" is checked in Settings > Storage >Settings > USB computer connection.

Glad I could help. That setting isn't exactly the easiest thing to find.

Fix usb
Go to device manager in windows 7/8/8.1 . Connect your mobile with usb. You will see android device or adb right click on it, select properties, click uninstall driver. NOTE: When you click this a small popup will appear saying remove software driver, tick on it and click uninstall.. there you go ..it will reinstall drivers and your phone will be finally connected.

im having the same problem . My phone shows as Unknown Device on Device Manager. Tried other cables and usb ports. I can tell that the cables and ports are not the problem since my Nexus 7 can connect without problem. Tried usb debuggin on/off, MTP on/off, PTP. Still no luck. Already tried to reinstall drivers but still the same problem. Hoping this is not a hardware issue. I already tried factory reset and flashing other ROMs

[Solved] Windows unable to install MTP driver

Hello guys!
I have already read some topics on this forum but it is my first message.
As indicated in the title, I cannot connect my Nexus 4 on my computer using MTP. This computer is running Windows 8.1 Update 1. So far I have tried every method I have seen on the web so I am a little bit desperate.
I have tried to plug my device on other computers and it was automatically detected on Windows 7, Windows 8.1 Update 1 and Ubuntu 14.04.
On my computer, as it does not auto-configure MTP I have tried to install ADB drivers, hoping it would help me. Universal ADB drivers, Naked Drivers and drivers from the SDK didn't changed anything. I also tried changing USB port.
It always recognised my phone as a "Nexus 4" in the "Other devices" section of the Device Manager (I do not have "Android Device" section), except in when MTP + debugging are activated. Then I have both "Nexus 4" and "MTP", in "Other devices" section.
It does not work in PTP mode either and I also tried uninstalling/reinstalling the Nexus Root Toolkit, even if I do not see how it can help...
One last point: I have the "connected as multimedia device" notification on my Nexus 4 when MTP is activated, even if it's not recognised by Windows.
Do you have any idea of what I can do?

Have you tried Nexus 4-specific drivers? Try following this guide.

I have already tried to follow this guide, it just helped me to install ADB drivers but I still don't have access to the content of my Nexus from my computer. I just tried it again, just in case. No changes

Last time I had such an issue: I uninstalled the drivers using Device Manager, then installed the drivers from that guide, plugged in my phone and it worked..
Here is another post from another forum that has something you could try:

2. developer option.. if you have not enabled developer option then you wouldnt have enabled USB debugging. so skip this
3. Connect your nexus to PC-->Go to Control panel-->device manager
you will see something like Android adb in device manager
Right Click and click "Update device Software"
Click "Browse your Computer for driver Software"
Click "Let me Pick from a list of device drivers on my Computer"
Click Next, for the device list shown.

Yes, I saw it worked for a lot of people, for what I have read, but it seems that I am not that lucky
When picking from the list, I tried from the Android Device section and it displays "Unable to find any drivers for this device". Same Results in “Mobile devices”.
When I try “Show all devices”, I have a lot of possibilities. I just tried “MTP Device” from both “Standard MTP-Compliant Device” and “Standard MTP-Compliant devices” sections, and it displayed “The install class is not present or is invalid”
Am I cursed?
I was wondering, is it possible that the problem is coming from my hardware? Or its drivers? (Those for the motherboard maybe?)

So I tried the solution... and it worked! :good:
I had the N version of Windows 8.1, mainly to avoid useless software like Windows Media Player, and it was the exact problem.

Windows 10 Not Finding My Phone

Hello, I am having a rather strange problem. My PC did the dreaded auto upgrade to windows 10 the other day and I also got a new Nexus 6P. It seems my computer won't recognize my phone, at all, when I plug it in via USB. It's not even showing up in the device manager as a problem, it's like nothing happens at all.
I have
- downloaded and installed the latest google usb driver (right click install)
- downloaded the latest mtp drivers
- downloaded official nexus package from Huawei
- installed ADB and android SDK and also reinstalled the drivers from the SDK manager.
- downloaded some update for windows media player as someone mentioned that could be the problem
- tried different cables
- tried different ports (usb 3 too)
I am really at a loss. My work computer works just fine with it so I know the phone and the cable are okay and other things work on those ports on my home computer. By the way the computer is Windows 10 pro - 64bit

Have you installed Google USB Driver for nexus 6p? If not, download Google USB Driver, extract it and save it in your any name folder that you can locate it later, plug n6p in your pc or laptop and it should pop up with USB option to select either file transfer or picture transfer, click one of them, Windows should be able to find n6p driver, if not, go to setting on your pc, device manager, then look at highlighted USB of your nexus 6p whether it is properly installed, if not, then install it by finding the driver that you extracted in that specific folder... Hoping this works for you.

Thanks for the response, but yea I already got the new usb drivers and installed them via right click install. The thing is though that in device manager the phone doesnt show up, at all, not even as a problem device. Its like its not there. The phone shows that its charging, but it doesn't recognize that its plugged into a usb port. Im really unsure what to do about this.

Did you install x64 driver from Google USB Driver? Check to see to make sure your USB android debugging is checked. It is kind of odd, try to reboot your pc and nexus 6p, then plug your phone in different USB port if your pc has extra USB port..

Should be on top of the folder that your extracted...​

Ah I see what you are referring to. Well, here is the thing, how do I install those drivers? Remember I cant find it device manager to update the drivers. The only way I could find to install them was to right click the android_winusb.inf file and choose install. It said it installed okay, but of course its not working. Any idea?

By the way, I also have usb debugging on and usb configuration WAS set to MTP, but I just changed it to try the different variations, but now its stuck on charging and wont change to MTP, but I think its because the phone isnt being recognized by the computer because this morning at the office I was able to change the usb type to mtp and the others, but that computer recognized the phone... AGHHHH WTF

By the way, if your Android debugging on or check? Just turn "developer options" on your phone and then check Android Debugging. To install x64 USB Driver, on your pc, control panel, device Manager, look for phone USB Driver to see it has some kind of yellow triangle, if so update x64 driver from your extracted folder...

Hey Lucky, I really appreciate you helping me out here, but just so you know I am no newb with this kinda stuff. I have went through this process on a couple other computers with no problem, so when I say its not showing up in device manager I mean its literally not there. Its not there and just under some other name or with a problem icon, its literally not in the device list. Also, I do have usb debugging on

Please go to YouTube and type "install usb driver on nexus 6p" search and then follow instructions from the video... Good luck.

WAIT! I got it... Wow I would of never thought this, but apprently my Wacom was the problem. As soon as I unplogged my wacom tablet the phone picked right up... Strange... Anyways, case closed... freaking conflicts!

Okay hold on, still having problems. Well, now the computer dings when I plug it in, but it still doesnt show up. However when I change the phone usb to PTP the phone becomes visible on the pc in windows explorer (but still not in device manager) and when I put it to MTP it disconnects and I cant see it in windows explorer anymore, and still cant find it in device manager... Ugh...

Okay sorry for all the messages, but i did get the MTP working. I had to uninstall the reinstall the drivers a couple times... very strange, but whatever its working... yay!

Did you figure out the problem? I'm having the exact same problem with mine and with USB mode not switching from Charging and the PC not even recognizing a USB device was plugged in.

I found using a different cable solved my problem. Don't really know why cause the first one I used seemed fine and worked to charge it, but by using a different one, Win 10 recognized it and got me in the game.
