Guys, I read my local paper on my bus journey home each day, it's usually over 40 pages and can be 30-110Mb in size (depending on adverts and photos)
I've tried all the free readers and the only one that works without crashing is the free office app that came with the Tab, however this doesn't have a way to jump a few pages, for example, if I'm on page 20 and nearing home I want to jump to the back page to read the sports pages before I get off, with the office app I have to swipe right to the end
Is there anything out there that can handle the paper and also be able to jump around pages (and preferably, one that is nice to look at and maybe even animates turning pages!)
if anyone has any paid PDF viewers, can you try the paper and let me know how it handles it? (todays happens to be the smallest so far at 21Mb though I'll be putting tomorrows there in 16 hours so it depends when you read this as to which you download)

EzPDF reader is my favorite, does everything you need and is updated frequently by the developer.

Unfortunately there is no PDF annotation tool available for Android yet...
I've been using RepliGo Reader to handle some of my larger PDFs and find it satisfactory. It has a nice Reading View, supports Bookmarks, lets you go to any page you want, and select text for copying to another app. If the PDF has been set up properly, selecting the Bookmarks option shows a Table of Contents for fast moving around larger documents. It even handles the Adobe DRM files, which is one of the main reasons I use it. So far it has opened everything I have thrown at it, which is not the case with some of the other PDF readers I have tried. There is no fancy page animation, just a solid and usable app.

I'm currently reading a graphically-rich 12MB book with 740 pages, and RepliGo Reader really lacks the zoom + navigation features that make the reading experience acceptable. On top of that, large books take *ages* to load, the font kerning is often wrong (weird character spacing), and the page refresh logic is really distracting (transition from blurry bitmap to fine text in scalable vector graphics mode).
That's why I recommended the cheaper, but more full-featured ezPDF Reader.
I hope you eventually find what you need

can you try it with the newspaper I've linked to?
I've just uploaded todays which is 40 pages and 65Mb (av 1.6Mb per page) which is about normal each day and will be more challenging than a book that's on average 0.016Mb per page
the pages in the 20's are most difficult as they have adverts and classifieds in them

Have you tried the Adobe Android app?
Might also want to look into turning it into an epub. Download Calibre for your PC/Mac, let it do the conversion, and can even be setup to automatically pull down news sources and convert them to the format of your choice, and sync them to your device of choice.
Just to reiterate a bit, Calibre rocks.
For epub readers, I'm really fond of Aldiko. And Perfect Viewer is also a nice app for CBZ, PDF, etc (though the UI could use a bit of work).

I downloaded the paper and tried it with the free Adobe Reader app from the Market and it works fine. All graphics and text are there. If you use the "Continuous Scroll" you can quickly scroll through a birdseye view of the pages until you find the one you want to view. The "Fit to Screen" view does what it says and a double-tap on an article or text area will zoom it to an easily readable size. It also supports pinch to zoom if you need a different size. Long-pressing the screen brings up a scrollbar across the bottom and some other options.
RepliGo Reader also renders all but the very first page for some reason, but it is a paid app, and for a newspaper, the Adobe Reader does just as nice a job for free.
I tried to take screenshots of the various menu options and choices, but neither app will let me create one. No such thing as a long-press on the back button because they immediately go back until they exit.

Hi, I've tried the official Adobe Reader and it never even renders the 1st page, it just crashes the Tab after a minute or 2 of trying

Or not. I have a few PDF books i bought from Manning, and Calibre fails flat on face on those files. Yes, it does convert them - but all pictures are destroyed during the conversion and because of the signature at bottom of every page, it makes the final epub file even worse.
Only if there would be a reader which could read both epub and pdf formats in one app.

I just tried it to convert today's 120Mb paper to an 80Mb ePub, just uploading it now to test
Trying to import todays paper into Aldiko and it's said "Importing Books..." for over 20 minutes now, it;s only an 80Mb book, I think this software has failed at the first hurdle
Any other "decent" ePub readers out there?

Sorry these apps didn't work for you. I didn't have any crashes using the link you provided with either app on my Tab (T-Mo version, not rooted). I'm out of ideas at this point. I even tried it on my Nexus One and had no problems. Sorry.

Converting a PDF with rich column layout (like newspapers or magazines) into an EPUB is a terrible idea. EPUB is designed for reflowable text, not for pixel-perfect ("fixed layout") documents.
I noticed that ezPDF provides "intelligent" navigation features, to automatically move from one column to the next, in order to mimic the human reading flow (eye movement). Unfortunately some PDFs (including the 60MB example kindly provided in this thread for testing) are badly formatted and do not indicate the correct reading flow.
By the way, this unfortunate mediocre PDF encoding is the main cause for awful EPUB conversions. The misuse of typesetting tools in the publishing industry results in pretty poor content quality, structurally-speaking (because the emphasis is on visual appearance, not raw content organization).
So, the best course of action is to continue testing PDF readers (in depth, not just superficially => use previous/next navigation features, double-tap zoom with column scroll-locking, pinch/stretch zoom for fine margin adjustments, placemarks / bookmarks, etc. etc.).
Some PDF reading apps are better maintained than others on the Market. There may be opportunities to report bugs or request features.

Don't bother. EPUB conversion is not satisfactory for this kind of PDF content (as I explained in the post above).

the 60Mb one was "created" by myself, each page sent to the printers is around 4Mb, I then put them all together in 1 file and then "print" to a PDF file at 72dpi and A6 page size to reduce the file size
If you download the 120Mb one today, that one is the original files just merged into 1 PDF
I cannot test PDF readers in depth because most don't even open large PDF's like todays
I'm looking towards purchasing the N2E, and i'm competent enough to root.
I've noticed a key feature missing from the N2E is the ability to zoom in onto a page - good for text books, manga, comics and actual ebooks in general.
Are there apps that have this ability to zoom into pages and scroll up and down along the page to view yet? (like the kindle has) Just checking.
ACV (Android comic viewer) and repligo (for PDF) both have zoom feature for single touch screens, which work quite fine for us.

i though nook touch is only used for reading and it does that already...what more improvement can be made...

I already have Nook Simple Touch and yea its eink reader. I thought it was being referred that we can make it a colour ink reader... maybe i read it wrongly.

You've confused yourself by thinking all improvements have to be made to reading. Even in reading, though, there is room for improvement. The stock NOOK reader and library have a lot of limitations and problems:
Limited font selection.
Poor and fragile organizational capabilities with large collections
Mixed support for metadata in sideloaded, non-B&N content (e.g. covers, book summaries)
No support for synchronizing reading positions on non-B&N content.
Removed page numbering from table of contents.
Dropped support for Discover and Popular Science magazines.
I also got tired of B&N deciding that, because I hadn't purchased anything from them lately, I must be interested in novels with shirtless dudes and plastering them on my home screen. The first thing I did after rooting was replace the B&N library and reader with Mantano Reader Premium, which together with their cloud subscription service, keeps my reading synchronized across 5 devices, regardless of where I bought the book. Mantano can also read the newest Discover and PopSci formats with no problem. Mantano also supports additional dictionaries. I find the reading experience on my "Mantano Simple Touch" vastly superior.
Of course, there's the usual litany of performance and battery improvements:
Improved control of wifi usage and automated daily sync using Tasker. Wifi only turns on for the few apps I use that need it. No more leaving wifi on overnight by accident and finding battery down.
Improved control of wifi access using WiFi Manager. Much easier to search for wifi options.
Ability to log into captive web portals (e.g. hotels, airports) and automate login process using Wi-Fi Web Login. Unit can wake up at night and sync without manual intervention to access wifi.
Overclock, multitouch and fast screen modes (I don't use these much personally, but they work well with no perceptible battery impact.)
Automatic sync to local timezone using Clocksync (useful when traveling).
Improved keyboard with Smart Keyboard Pro.
And the usual litany of app selection:
Improved browser (Opera Mobile).
Corporate and private email (Touchdown, Maildroid)
Automated Dropbox folder sync (e.g. nightly news subscriptions using Calibre) using Dropsync.
Offline web reading using Instapaper with Instafetch client.
Travel info (Flight Track, TripIt)
RSS news feeds (NewsRob, My6Sense)
Google Voice (voicemail transcriptions as text).
And a few time-wasting games that work well on the eink screen:
Shredder Chess
Yukon Gold (there's an eink-optimized version here on XDA).
Crosswords
My question to you is, owning a device and having such capabilities, why would you NOT root it? A better start might have been to simply ask what people are doing with rooted devices rather than questioning the need to do so because you don't understand why. I can literally sit at the beach in direct sunlight and do these things (depending on wifi, of course). Why would I carry another device to do these basic tasks when the NST I already have does them just fine, anywhere, indoors or out? Do you find it more sensible for a corporation to define how you should use the device you paid for?

Hello! I have not rooted an android device in a lot of time, and I am basically a noob, but I do read a lot, and my first rooting more than year ago turned out to be a complete success, as far as my knowledge goes.
Now I have A Nook Simple Touch model BNRV-300 with current firmware version 1.2.1 and I would like to add more features to it, because for the price I got it it gives me NOTHING I need.
B&N Forcing updates over the air and registration using the Internet when I first start the device is RIDICULOUS and is evenworse than a DRM protection!
product containing such DRM should be banned for sale at least in Eirope by the Customer PRotection, for limitations they imply on the users!!!

My question is: Currently what is the best method to Root this device in order to get access to more features software? I am looking for method that includes making a BACKUP. Is there currently and entire Custom firmware released that will REPLACE the existing useless firmware on the Nook Simple touch?
What custom apps, kernel, and roms can you reccoment me?

Ditto what OverByter said. The NookManager is, in my experience, a very simple and foolproof method. Whether you decide to pursue GoogleApps, etc., is up to you. But for root and a simple initial set-up, NM is the way to go, IMHO.

Hi, following the advice from this thread, I just rooted my Nook Simple Touch GlowLight. I have previously rooted nook simple touch with the same process.
The market is working, gmail is working. What I dont understand is how to make it user friendly etc. How do I make it like a tablet. I installed some launchers but I have to go into apps and then select it to run it everytime.
I am just wondering what should be done once you have rooted and googlified the nook.
Any recommendations on launchers, themes any other enhancements and ideas to use a rooted nook will be really helpful.

I tried a bunch of launchers when I first rooted and finally settled on ADW. For me it was easy to set up (once I got over the "I don't know anything about Android" feeling) and I initially used the selected app screen as my "Home". There are two ways to do that. One, after installing ADW and rebooting the Nook it will ask which app you want to use to open "Home" and you will have a chance to set that one as default (either the B&N stock Home screen or the ADW app drawer). And/or, you can use NTMM to assign the QuickNav "Home" button to ADW Launcher.
Pretty much any launcher should provide you with the same options once installed when you reboot.
So that's what I used to do but I eventually went back to the B&N "Home" screen on boot and then after that I can access it from a long press of the "N" button (again, you can assign that with NTMM). I've almost completely reassigned by QuickNav buttons (except for Library). See this post (result in #4).
I've also done the multi-touch enhancement (nice for Opera Mobile and some other apps), No-Refresh and FastMode2 (contrary to what the posts seem to indicate about FastMode2 I have found that the app does indeed toggle the mode on my NST so I assigned it to one of the side buttons and No-Refresh to another one).

I also did the triple Flash installation described elsewhere but it really only works with SWF files as far as I can tell and only with Flash-able browsers like Dolphin (which has other issues). I've also done the multi-touch enhancement (nice for Opera Mobile and some other apps), No-Refresh and FastMode2 (contrary to what the posts seem to indicate about FastMode2 I have found that the app does indeed toggle the mode on my NST so I assigned it to one of the side buttons and No-Refresh to another one).

What version of Crosswords did you get to work on your nook. I couldn't get any of the ones I tried to work?

Yes, I really like WiFi Transfer. Saves a lot of wear and tear on that USB jack. The only limitation I could find (beyond the 5 MB file size limit for the free version) is that transfers to the internal My Files folder are not updated in the Library unless you reboot. So I just use the sdcard.
You're right, no market crossword apps work properly on the rooted Nook. I accidentally stumbled across a version of Crosswords that does, however. Check your PMs.

First of all, thanks for great set of resources! I was rooted an up and running with market in no time.
I am planning to use the Nook as a home automation controller, where the interface is presented through a webpage. For that, I am going to have it mounted and constantly powered-up.
So, my question is - how can I disable screensaver to have the Nook show the browser 24/7?
Also, is there any simple way to show contexts of the browser window without the navigation buttons? (If not, no worries - I can put something together quickly in PhoneGap or similar).

Hi, I am quite interested in your project and was wondering how you got on with this.
Basically I am looking to have a calendar + weather page up constantly on in my rooted Nook Simple Touch. I have managed to get rid of the screensaver but it still goes into sleep mode after a while. Also would like to get some direction on how I could do my own PHP based page because most of the calendar apps out there dont seem to report weather

I tried using crond to wget or curl the image from the server to the screensaver folder so I could have other info graphics rotated throughout the day. I was unable to get the image via wget and unable to get cron working. Any suggestions... (besides having a browser open 247)

Hi, kudos for the progress so far.
I take it you couldn't just use another device to FTP the file to the nook every so often?
I was hoping to do a very similar thing with my spare NST but unfortunately my coding skills are not up to that level. You mention that you were trying to populate the screensaver folder with the image to be displayed, would there be any way to automatically make the NST wake up every few hours to refresh this image (assuming you can get the image there in the first place)?
I think that the better way to do this all is to write an app.
The app could use either an ImageView or a WebView.
You could easily make this work directly without a proxy or a server.
You wouldn't have to play around with screen timeout/wakeup,
This is going to be hard wired powered?

The more I think about this, the nook simple touch might have to be charging.
I've done something very similar with my nook showing a custom weather listing in a fullscreen Dolphin browser. Though I have a problem with it not running for more than a day or so before the browser stops refreshing anymore. Have you experienced this? I'm currently looking into some way to kill/restart the browser on schedule perhaps.
Also, how did you get the browser in landscape mode? I can't find that anywhere.

Another way to set orientation is if you have an application that only does landscape.
Switch to the landscape app, home out of that, go to the application that does both.
It should stay in landscape mode.
I have an assortment of apps, some portrait only, some landscape only, some both orientations.
By jumping briefly to a landscape only or portrait only app you can set the orientation for subsequent apps.

I've got a web server running on my NAS serving a custom page for me. The browser launches fullscreen on boot up via some auto start app. After 5 min, the page redirects to an all black page for a second, then an all white page for a second (to clean up the display), then back to the original page with any new information on it.
This works well except for two issues.
1. On boot up, there's no way to avoid the first lock screen. After unlocked, it doesn't come back, but it's always there on startup. This wouldn't really be an issue except...
2. The browser stops loading the page after a while. I can hit refresh and it goes through the motions, but the page isn't updated. It can take a couple of days for this to happen. Restarting the nook solves this. I confirmed that the page is still served normally to other devices (not a web server problem). I would just have the device auto restart at 3am or something, but then the lock screen would always be there.
Do you guys have any ideas about how to correct this or at least work around it?
I can't even try other browsers because this is the only one I've found that displays full screen.

I wonder if there's a way to have a cron job kill and relaunch the browser every once in a while to get past the freezing issue you'd mentioned. Or just have the cron job kill the browser every once in a while and relaunch it, pointed at a new information display page.
Even better would be if there was way to bypass the need for a web browser and interact directly with the e-ink screen buffer as can be done on rooted kindle devices. (I can't post a link, but google search "Tools Eink Framebuffer Update Trigger" to find the kindle framebuffer commands)
Yeah, I worked directly with the screen output on my kobo, which worked well, but it was more of a pain to make changes. That might be because I'm more familiar with php and css than python and screen blit-ing. Having android to work with makes it much easier to expand functionality by just downloading an app and using my fingers, instead compiling software and ssh-ing in for everything.
Speaking of which, it looks like my problem is solved. I installed tasker and set it to kill the browser at 3am and start the browser at 3:01am. Thanks all.
What about google play apps for weather? Most of the apps I have used so far have had contrast issues since they are designed for color screens. Does anybody know of good apps that display the current weather info and forcast data in an eink friendly color scheme?

Apologies for the resurrection, but for those looking for a digital low power / e-ink info display this might just do it.
This app will do the trick if a static jpg of a web page updated at an interval will do (set to output a jpeg in the custom screensaver folder on rooted nook)
Electricsign android app: (search electricsign on the play store - I can't post a URL here yet).
Leave the WiFi on and set the screensaver timeout.
The source code is on github also (google.it ).
I can never find the app because I always think it's called electricsheep.
