How to root + recovery your Minix Neo X5 without a Comp - Android Stick & Console RockChip based Computers

This is for everyone that wants to easily root and install CWM on their Neo X5 without having to go through the hassle of hooking it up to a computer and downloading/installing 3rd party tools + drivers. So far, every tutorial I've come across suggests using a comp must be done so I thought it would be a good idea to write up how I accomplished this without all that hassle.
All steps below can be done directly from the device itself -- all you need is a file explorer and browser of your choice:
1) Download CWM for the Neo X5 here: http://androtab.info/clockworkmod/rockchip/rk3066/
2) Download a CWM compatible pre-rooted ROM of your choice. Top contenders are:
a) Finless 1.2b: http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?4485-CWM-Minix-Roms
b) Kirk out v1.6: http://minixforums.com/threads/rom-kirk-out-neo-x5-4-1-1_0117-v-1-6.313/
3) Using a file explorer of your choice, move the CWM recovery zip that you just downloaded in Step#1 to the root of your /sdcard directory and rename it "update.zip"
4) You should now automatically be prompted to install the update using the system's stock updater process -- Accept the update.
5) Your system should automatically install the update and should automatically boot into CWM when done.
5a) (Optional) Once in recovery you can make a nandroid backup of your current stock rom.
6) Using CWM, use the options to install a zip for /sdcard and select the zip for the ROM you downloaded in Step#2
7) After installation is done, go back to the main CWM menu. Select "Wipe Cache" and then:
7a) Recommended: "Wipe Data". This will wipe all your apps and settings but ensure that it is a clean install.
or
7b) "Advanced -> Wipe Dalvik Cache". This will preserve your data and is known as a dirty flash. It should work but there is always a risk of a bootloop upon reboot.
8) Reboot the system and enjoy. You should now be rooted with CWM installed.

Internal sdcard (which should be labeled as /mnt/sdcard)
It won't work on the external card

Boot problem.
I might have screwed my Neo G4.
Please help me.
I booted into CWM, and made a backup of my original firmware.
Then i formated system, cache and data, and wiped data/factory, cache and dalvick.
i tried to install a custom rom, but the instalation was aborted.
When i rebooted mi Neo G4, it never boot, only black screen.
How do i boot into CWM now?
I need that to restore the backup i made.
It is posible to build a bootable SD card for this device?
Thank you!

Here is something to consider. In this post on RockChip RK30 Common Bug - External SDcard Corruption! where finless bob talks about *writing* to the external SD card causing corruptions. But, I am wondering about this:
Format your sdcard using windows as FAT32 and copy the recovery update.zip to the root directory using windows or other. Then after you insert in the Neo G4 you will not be *writing* so you should not experience noted corruption attempting a recovery by only *reading* the files.
I read the OP comment that booting does not work from external sdcard. So, I am researching this now on my devices.
But, I do not know how to boot the device into recovery from black screen. Good luck with your research.

If i had only restored my backup before i rebooted.
I hope TVE bootable sdcard work.
Thanks anyway.

I just read this thread and one guy says you get recovery by holding a pin in reset and plugging in power. I do not know, but you can try.
Good luck.

Holding the reset pin while powering up should boot you into recovery so you can restore your backup (or install a ROM after redownloading and verifying the MD5)

If all that fails, I just read this interesting post.
Okay. I'm done now. LOL

OMG es working!
Restoring now!
Thank you so muchos guys.

There is a version of the Kirkout ROM for the G4: http://minixforums.com/threads/rom-kirk-out-neo-x5-g4-4-1-1_0117-v-1-6.313/
I believe someone made an unofficial version port of the Finless ROM for the G4 as well on the same site. It is not officially supported though. I've been pretty happy with the Kirkout ROM on my X5 so I would suggest giving it a whirl.

Cool. Is there a remote control app forma that particular rom?
RK remote doesn't even work with old stock Firmware.

HDMI Signal not detected after update
I followed the instructions at the top of this thread to update the firmware of my Minix Neo X5 to the Finless 1.2b version (720 with airpin). Everything went as described but after rebooting in the last step I no longer get an HDMI signal from my Minix. I have tried my standard Samsung TV that worked fine before and also on my standard Acer computer screen without luck.
Does anyone have any idea about what might have happend and how I can get my Minix up and running again?

I would start all over. Did you make a nandroid of your original ROM? Did fresh install or dirty? Worse case scenario you can restore the original ROM and then dirty flash.

I did not back up my original ROM. As I had no HDMI signal from the device I resorted to OTG Flashing. I tried to install Finless 1.2b using the Finless ROM flash tool (RKAndriodTool v1.35). I no longer got "No signal" message but just a black screen at booting, the same happened when I tried to boot into recovery. I tried both 720 and 1080 versions.
I did not dare to test with Kirk out from OTG as he clearly says that it is only for CWM.
I then tried to reinstall CWM-based Recovery with RKAndriodTool following the instructions on androtab. Still just got black screen when trying to boot into recovery.
I flashed one more time with RKAndriodTool using Finless 1.2b 720 with airpin. When I booted into recovery I noticed some white pixels flashing on the screen that I had not seen before. I left the device running and after a long time the Finless start image (Black droid) apeared but nothing more happened.
I Rebooted 2 times and finally now I'm up and running Finless. Im not shure if everythin is ok yet, I think everything seems a bit slow but I guess I will have to run it a bit to know for shure.
I'm glad that Minix has made such a sturdy device. I guess a lot of other devices would have been bricked by now with all the messing about I've been doing.

i was only able to use rk when i updated the minix firmware.
well, i'll give a try to finless. if remote don't work, i'll go back to minix firmware.
thank you

A note on the RKRemote app, I believe WiFi on the X5 has to be enabled even if the device is connected via ethernet. I am pretty sure I read that somewhere.....can't test myself since I only have my device connected via WiFi (no LAN port in the room I have it in).

yes, the device has to be connected to the same wifi network that the mobile with rk remote

Using cwm do a full nandroid backup, transfer the backup to microsd, put the microsd into the other Iconia and use cwm to do a nandroid restore.
At least, that's my guess.
well that's a start, I was about to start ripping my hair out over this simple sound issue lol but thanks.

Hmmmmm. Can't you use use a full update.zip and flash a copy of the stock rom? Never tried using a nandroid backup on a system it was not created on - it might work, but it might not, I really am not sure.
But just flashing a full update.zip or installing Acer recovery tool to flash a stock rom sounds easier and more likely to work to me - am I missing something and is this not an option?
I tried flashing two or three times before, sent it into a bootloop, I even tried the Acer update decrypter but my laptop is 32 bit, and until today when I finally decided to post the question is when it occurred to me about possibly transferring it. btw, is there a set destination for the nandroid back up?

Nandroid backups go to the external SD by default (I think) - have you tried using Acer Recovery Installer on the tab with the issue? Assuming you can still boot it and have root you may be able to go back to stock using it.
acer recovery
Tonto the market. Download the new version of Acer recovery installer.install third recovery. Go back into Acer recovery got last box .choose a rom for your location.let it download then install.point and click simple and will fix your issue.if you have failed attempts. You might want to try a different SD card.good luck
This did work for me
.
Erica Renee
Urban geeky blonde like me can do it surely a strong man like yourself willnfigure it out. Giggles
I have tried Acer recovery installer as well, I have 2.3 in fact I tried just a moment ago, and I get boot screen with android the triangle and the exlimation point.
confusion
OK Acer recovery installer is not the recovery just a means to install and work within it and run pre defined scripts.as in there backup and so on
If you are getting that.you need to
1.open Acer recovery installer
2.Install Recovery.the first black box acroos screen.it will askbifnyoubwant to back up stock recoverybdo so.(this is the recovery program only not the system) .
3.boot into recovery and backup your whole tablet.or use the far right black button to d/load and install a new rom from his list.fallow the instructions there clickishly simple
Good luck
So what Acer recovery installer does is replace the stock recovery. To allow you to install non stock decryptedand other. Zip files of course it will install stock recoveries as well.read the Acer recovery install thread under Dev section it's al in there
Again Google luck
OK so here is what I did and it worked like a charm, installed cwm did a custom restore (everything but data) mounted the SD card on other tablet restored and voila I have Dolby mobile back! thank you guys for all the help and info, now I can truly mess with roms and be safe knowing I have a non currupt back up

i9000 flashing gone bad, need a little guidance

Hello to everyone who's reading this!
It is my first post here so please be patient
I was trying to flash my new i9000 and i got to the point where i don't know what to do. My problem is that i can't reach the EXTERNAL sd card from CWM so i can not install any zip.
I've been flashing roms many times before but only on HTC devices and on those phones the term sd card means external sd card. On Samsung phones as it turns out the same term is used for internal phone memory. However i did not see that coming before i formatted (in CWM) the phone. So what i've got now is a phone without OS (or at least it does not start) which does not start unless into CWM. In CWM when i choose "install zip from sd card" it gives the list of folders and files on phones memory but not on the external sd card. Is there a way to put a needed zip file into that internal memory so i could flash some rom and make my phone working again ???
Can you get download mode volume down/ power/ home.... if so just grab a stock firmware and flash it with Odin

Will do! Does it have to be stock? Really hate the idea to do the whole thing again
P.S. Before trying to flash it i formatted the phone via CWM utilities with no errors. But when i was trying to flash a zip and it gave me an index of internal memory and i found all the files even photos and games a had on the phone. How can this be?
Here's a link to my recovery kit to get you back to gb with cf root ezbase, with ezodin and pictorial instructions as well! Just unzip and read the .txt first
Hang on forgot the link lol

I followed steps on ezbase kit provided and now i have CyanogenMod 9 Nightly. Now im going to try to flash Simplicity rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1203047 because i need something clean, close to stock and optimized for battery life.
So this time i shouldn't format anything just wipe out all user data and flash on top? Cuz formatting is what got me into trouble in the first place.
Edit: Just realised CWM version is now different so i can't install that rom. Is there any i9000 rom compatible with CWM 5 and optimized for battery? Googling is really useless at this point

Try slim, very stable
It doesn't matter what cwm version you have the ROM will change it by its self to the one it uses, if you flash and it changes the cwm and them doesn't install ROM jsit reflash as this means its just flashed the kernel first

When you flash a rom with CWM it installs the rom and a kernel, the kernel contains CWM, you can change kernels as often as you like without affecting the rom (as long as they are compatible). What you want to look for is the best rom/kernel combination

Phone Bricked? Please help

So I rooted my RAZR M using motofail2go, and all was well.
Installed 'RAZR-M-Safestrap-3.12', as I was going to flash a custom ROM. I first backed up my Original Rom using the backup function.
I then wiped 'System', and went to flash the new ROM, but the flash did not work, so I restarted.
Now the problem is when the phone reboots, it showes the Safestrap splash screen with the Recovery option and start normal, but it is not working, as not sensing my inputs or something, after about 5 sec it goes to a blank screen and sits.
I tried to hard boot into the Android System Recovery, and tried to download an official Verizon ROM and install using 'apply update from external storage' using my micro sd, but I keep getting an error E:signature verification failed.
Does anyone know where I can find an official ROM to set it back to normal so I can use my phone again?
Thanks in advance.
Also: My phone originally had 4.0.4 version.

if you can get back into recovery, you should be able to press "restore" assuming you backed up your previous ROM.

What you might want to to is use RSDlite and flash that image you downloaded. This seems like it would help you, though I have not personally tried it:
http://www.andromods.com/tips-trick...oid-razr-m-xt907-stock-original-firmware.html
EDIT: And once the flash is complete, I would reboot into recovery again and wipe data and cache and then let it boot into the phone.
EDIT 2: Oh, and in addition to RSDLite, you will need the Motorola USB drivers so your computer can see the phone over USB.

Thanks for the video. It came just in time as I just purchased a used TP that had an older version of android ICS already on it and I wanted to upgrade but seeing as how this is the first device I have sort of inherited already rooted, it is hard to just jump in and know everything that I would have learned from the beginning like i did with my previous phones.
Anyways, I did everything you said except I used the newest AOKP rom. But my tp is still booting to the older version of android that I had on it. Any ideas? Feel free to pm me if you prefer that.

If the AOKP ROM is using a unique uImage file, then you may see two different entries on your moboot screen for two different Android builds.
What does your moboot menu have in it?
Maybe your install failed. Try downloading and flashing it again. If you're trying AOKP JB, you should wipe both /data and dalvik cache to avoid a boot loop!
If using AcmeInstaller3 remember to rename the ROM with ”update-” at the beginning so that it looks like update-AOKPJB_UnOfficial.zip

I believe it was the "update-" thing that was keeping it from updating. I followed another video tutorial which provided files that had the "update" in front of them and it worked.
I haven't tried yet but now that it worked will the regular method of wiping and flashing through recovery work? (Like, if I want to try out different JB Roms) Are there any files that need to be in a particular place for the recovery method to work? I tried that method first and it would never take, would always revert back to the original version. Don't know if, because I just jumped in and haven't been here from the beginning, I am just missing a necessary step that is hardly even talked about anymore.
Love your work Rev! Thank you again for everything that you do!
Update went like clockwork, unfortunately I can't seem to get the camera to work (not a terrible loss, but I was sorta excited to see it actually working with this release).

I can attest to the improved battery life on this cm10 build. Amazingly, it holds battery life when it's sleeping now.
Thank you so much for taking the time in making the video for us. Your instructions are easy to follow, hard for anyone to mess up.
(The hosting site for the files is not working, not sure if you were aware)
Hi, I have CM9 running on my TP. With the latest release, the camera works great. But before updating it to CM10, I'd like to know about the issues currently in this build.
Thanks.
Where does one go when the goo.im site appears down, to get the needed files? Mirror somewhere?

Don't go for external mirrors unless some recognized developer suggests them. Best will be to wait for goo.im to come up again, being a prime site, it won't be down for long.
The goo servers do appear to go down on occasion. They always come back up a bit later.
Problem with installing GAPPS using ACMEInstaller3
Excellent tutorial for an idiot like me. Thanks for again for the guide! Question:
I followed the instructions step by step and was able to get CM10 installed successfully. However, I wasn't able to get GAPPS installed using this method. From researching I understand sometimes there is a problem installing GAPPS through ACMEInstaller3 and one can simply get GAPPS installed through CWM Recovery. However, I would like to use/have TWRP instead so is there a way to get GAPPS installed properly through ACMEInstaller3 and then I can install TWRP through GooManager?
Alternatively, is there a way to install GAPPS without using CWM Recovery?
Or, I guess I can install CWM Recovery first, then install TWRP Recovery, then remove CWM Recovery while keeping TWRP and not go back to the stock Recovery? I tried to search the forums and wasn't able to find instructions on removing CWM Recovery WHILE still keeping CM10 and not go back to the Stock recovery.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help.
@reverendkjr - appreciate your videos. they're awesome. definitely helped me (and several other friends) many times and saved a ton of time. super easy to follow.
Yes you can install TWRP normally, flash gapps in CWM then install goomanager app, open and click the 3 dot menu and install custom recovery script then it will install it
Now using a root file manager go to the directory called boot and delete uimage.cwm.img (this is from memory but still should be correct

My goodness you have forgotten everything, you will need to install acmeuninstaller 3, moboot, CMW and the rom you want along with the relevant gapps. Sounds complicated this thread will make it easy

[Q] phone does not turn on. it goes directly to cwm recovery mode

Good day,
I am having problem with my lg optimus l3 e400. I just rooted it the other day to solve the memory problems of the phone. It has been working fine until today. What happened was, it just turned off and whenever i turn it on, it goes directly to cwm recovery, which has been installed during the root process thru ROM manager app. I also found out that the SD card is corrupted. I had to format the SD card and tried pasting stock ROM's but it still doesn't boot and still goes to recoovery everytime I turn it on. I tried to format the device, the cache, and the other format options in recovery mode but the issue is still not solved. Can anyone please help? And if possible, give me a step by step guide because I'm kinda new at this. Thanks.

If you highlight the reboot option and then press the power key what happens?Does the phone reboot? If not somethings gone wrong...Anyway try flashing another custom ROM(cyanoid, for example @linuxxx)Does CWM recovery mount the SD card?Did you flash SD merge and you aren't using a SD merge compatible kernel?Anyway you can't flash stock roms from the phone. You must use the good old KDZ(How many times did he save me....)

Can you guys give me a link? i'm having a hard time looking for stock roms and i don't even know how to distinguish stock rom and custom rom. the sd card that was working before the happened got corrupted but after inserting it to another phone and formatting the sd card, it seems to be working and the sd card can be mounted. i'm not sure with the sd merge compatiility with the kernel but it worked for a few days so i think it is compatible. the phone does not reboot. whenever i reboot it or turn it on, it just goes to recovery mode. thanks.
