Hi everyone,
have searched around and can't seem to find anybody else with this problem so i though i'd create a thread to see if anyone has any ideas.
Upon loading the phone up for the first time, I synced all my contacts up from Google. I have pictures saved for most of my contacts, these have always synced up fine with my other devices, galaxy S3, Note 2, Nexus 4. But with the HTC one the photos are there but obscured by a sort of black mesh. So I took some more photos, replaced them and all was ok. Until I decided to unlock bootloader and flash Renovate. Upon syncing contacts again all come back up with this black mesh. I know it is only a small thing, but it just looks rubbish, and I don't want to replace them all only to go through same process when I flash another rom.
Just wondered if anyone else has same problem and have found a way around it.
There are other threads on this. It is because Google contacts used to use low resolution pictures. The alternative would be awful blurred upscaled pictures. I think they made the right choice.

I have one contact image that does that. It's caused by the fact that the image I use for that contact is insanely small, probably 96x96 or something. This One contact manager blows it up but makes the pixels circular rather than just upscaling them to square blocks.

I think this was EXTREMELY smart on HTC's side... instead of leaving it like a crappy blurry image it..
Sorry I had check but couldn't find any. I had redone all the pics on my nexus 4 which loaded big pictures. In fact bigger than what's used in the HTC one. Plus that still doesn't explain why if I were redo the pictures now and sync them to Google then format the phone and sync them back again later you would expect that at least the ones redone on the HTC one would display correctly. Yet they don't.
Thanks for your help

Ok so my g/f snapped like 6 pictures at an event she attended yesterday on her droid 2. She came home complaining the pictures weren't appearing in the gallery. I figured it was user error since she's new to the droid thing. I checked out the gallery and sure enough there was 6 gray squares in the place of the pictures. I rebooted and they were gone. Is this something that i should get a replacement over or what. I snapped a pic after the reboot and it was fine but i don't want her to have to wonder if the picture came out. There's also been a problem after she takes a pic it not appearing in the gallery right away. Just seems buggy any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Lmao exactly! We shouldn't have to roll the dice on losing special moments like that! Sux.

I had a similar problem, but I think it's distinct.
I discovered that deleting the photos through the file app (without a special file manager installed) doesn't instantly delete the thumbnails in the photo gallery, so it will act as if the photos are still there, and if you take new photos before it regenerates its thumbnail cache (or whatever it actually does), the new photos will error for a while too, until it straightens out once and for all which photos really exist and which don't.
Curiously, I too came across the error taking pictures of a chick's ass. Maybe there's a link here.
There is a problem where the gallery doesn't refresh. I heard that it will refresh within a few hours on its own or you have to reboot in order to see new pics in the gallery.
SDrescan from the market is a workaround. It rescans the SD card which refreshes the gallery.
I am having a gallery issue where I select a picture and and different picture loads. Sometimes from the same album or different album. Shutting down sometimes resolves the issue or a soft reset and sometimes it does not. Sometimes I have to go into USB mode and add or delete a picture for ot to work properly again. One time the images in my download album al appeared blurry. I downloaded a picture from my email and then they all appeared normal again. Anyone else have this gallery bug?

Another one of those mind boggling simple bugs in Gingerbread/Nexus S.
Yes, I've seen similar, in that if I take a picture, it often won't show in the gallery unless I open it via a file explorer app from the sdcard.
I haven't tried forcing a media scan manually (there are apps for that), to see if that addresses it.
The Nexus S feels much more like a BETA product (software wise) than I recall the Nexus 1 feeling.

I had this exact same problem. You have to delete all of the thumbnails for your photos so that they reload. The only thing is, the thumbnails are no longer stored in the DCIM folder like they were pre-Gingerbread. Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly where they're stored - I used root explorer to find them and delete them.
/Android/data/
You will see a folder called 'com.cooliris.media' delete it. The gallery app will regenerate your album thumbs.

I mean wth do we have to go through all that to see our pics... they took forever to fix the text issue they said they have a fix for which we haven't received. The fix for blurry mms is fixed thank god. Now this? Yeah the N1 did feel like a better product but the updates helped that one too. These are stupid things that shouldn't be an issue though.

This issue happens on and off; it's quite absurd. My pictures are once again not opening to the correct photos. As I've said before, it's stuff like this (among a slew of other issues and glitches) which make Gingerbread, and to some degree Android, feel like a second rate experience.
Has anyone also experienced that sometimes pictures aren't clear in the gallery? Often, the picture will come up unclear, but after a second, will be clear as it's meant to be. But sometimes the clarity doesn't happen.
Does it have anything to do with the internal memory or something again (similar to the random ringtone change issue)?
Is this yet another glitch of Android?
Edit: I should mention this is not the MMS issue which is often mentioned. I'm talking about regular photos that are taken with the Camera. Those sometimes don't clear up either.
Yeah, I get this too.
I wait until all the pics are done downloading from the SD card... then I pick the picture.

It happens to me randomly even long after the SD card has loaded.
Why is the gallery reader like this anyway, where it is blurry at first, then clear?
Promise you its not androids fault. You will never EVER have a phone with HTC SENSE do that.

The low res fade into higher res gallery quirk is more of a feature and is how the gallery always has shown photos even back on the nexus one. It allows quick flipping enough photos without having to insanely cache everything in full from the start. It only should take a second to flick over though.
I'm loving the nexus s gallery performance. I'm sorry to hear some aren't as thrilled.
One if the posters spoke about this stuff not happening in htc - that's rubbish, the 3d gallery acts the same there too, only worse, because oh the lack of hyper fast inand. And the htc gallery is rubbish, it struggles to even show thumbnails if you have too many pics. I speak from experience owning the desire hd, which is the most powerful htc phone to date.
The wrong photo issue is completely fixed by clearing the photo cache and then restarting the device. It didn't clear up until the restart, for some reason.
I have some issues with the gallery as well. But I must say that it performs 10X better then it did on my N1, it was sooo slow and laggy on that thing!!!
Get JustPictures! from the market, way better that Gallery3d imo, plus you can access your picasa, flickr, facebook, smugmug, etc pics from there as well.
Android Gallery sucks ... It just sucks. It does not display in high quality, 16 bits instead of 24 bits. You will see terrible color banding on gradient colors.
Google just lied when they told us everything is 32 bits on Android 2.3.
Nah, that's not true.
I hate that because HTC Sense gallery is much better.
Skip that 3D animation transition, it is an image gallery. Without high quality output, that's no good.
JustPictures is the same, it still display terrible color banding.

I'm very happy with the Gallery performance, and as has been said the low res image fading to high res is a feature of the Android gallery, it's always done that on every handset I've owned.
The gallery has it's share of quirks/bug in the NS version of it, but agreed with others, the fading is a design feature, not a bug.
Has anyone encountered the situation wherein even the application images are in your gallery?
Hey,
I was wondering if anyone knows of a fix for the horrible low quality in contact photos when syncing contacts to Gmail. It seems as if when you sync your contacts to Gmail, Google resizes it to a redicliously low quality and in turn once synced back, the photos shows terribly.
I've been looking around and only found a silly workaround where you create another contact on your phone (not synced with google), adding a photo and then linking it to your google contact. Tho, it is silly IMHO.
Is there a way to make google exclude the sync of the 'photo' field? or only do a one-way sync specifically for photos?
Hope there is a solution as its looking real bad on the SNS crispy screen
I believe this is a fault with android itself. I know when my x10 got its 2.1 update that contact pics problem occurred. Don't know of any fix but its not just nexus that it happens to.
Edit. Actually cannot fathom why its not been sorted in 2.3 as its a well known issue!
Found this: apparantely this is to do with Google's servers and not the Android platform/
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=4147#makechanges
Tho, i'm guessing if one could exclude the sync field of the photo it should do the trick

Very strange indeed. I mean its not a big problem but you would have thought Google would have fixed it by now
It's Google GMAIL responsibility.
Yeah, they should update GMAIL Contacts to use higher resolution.
I don't why GMAIL does not fix this.
It will look crap on 10.1 tablet!

Agreed. The pics look so crappy, ugh. I've starred the issue.
Any news or new workaround on that issue?
We are in the year 2012 now, running this great and beautiful ICS, but still have to look at this ugly contact pics
I just don't understand how it could be so hard for google to give us some more space for the pics.... grrr!
Full Screen Caller ID Oh, and I've got a problem with it... It has an option which allows to choose a FB picture to your contact. You can browse the fb picture folders, but when the photo is selected an editor window should come up, where u can crop, resize, rotate the chosen pic. It used to work flawlessly with my previous phone, but on Nexus S only a black window appears, and the picture won't load... Picture editing works, if i choose a photo from SD, even FB contact sync is working, but when I try to add a FB picture manually only black window shows up.
Anyone having the same problem, or have an idea, how to solve it?
And it's not only on ICS, I tried a loads of GB ROM also, the problem is always the same. I even tried some previous version of the app (FSCI), didn't help. It seems to me, the it's incompatibility with the phone's hardware. :/
off topic, but does FSCID support ISC-like call-acception (move circle to the green phone)?

It seems that the pics are in high res when :
1) Contact has Google+, it's in your circle and you synced it. Then ICS fetches the full res contact pic from G+,
2) You set the picture manually on the phone from Gallery.
In both cases, the picture is actually set on the phone. If you delete contacts and resync, you'll get crappy pics again. Only solution would be bumping the Google contact picture limit to the same as G+, but I think Google has done this on purpose to get ppl on G+. Pretty weak move if you ask me, G+ ain't bad, but the rape with it (not to mention it's a major battery hog on ICS out of the box) is leaving me with bad taste. I already deleted it from the device.

Doing Nr. 2 works just fine. Even after editing contacts directly on google, they remain high-res. Don't know what happens when you edit the pic directly on google though.

Well yeah, editing the contact wouldn't break the picture linked on the phone. But deleting Contact storage or factory reset/reflash of ROM would mean linking all the contacts with their high resolution pics again. Which kinda blows. At least it would be kewl to know where the pics and linking data is stored, so someone could restore the data with Titanium backup or a dedicated app (which probably wouldn't be hard to develop). Would be a root only thing though.
Hello,
I just got an S4, previously had HTC One X. Now, there is a small issue which is bothering me and I couldn't find any posts about it. When you open up a contact in Touchwiz, it shows a tiny square photo of the person. In Sense, it shows a widescreen photo, which can be expanded into full size once clicked on (please see attached image).
Is there anyway I can get Touchwiz to do the same? Any mods, apps, etc?
Any help would be really appreciated.
You can't do that in the stock contacts app, but you can find an alternate contacts/dialer app in the store. Can't say much more though.

I have been using Rocketdialer from the play store for years now,
it has full screen incoming and outgoing caller id built in with all
kinds of themes and layouts.
Much better than any stock dialer. It even has a call blocker built in too.
It's an all in one contacts/dialer/caller id/call blocker.
It's really excellent
I got it from the playstore.
Give it a try,

Actually one problem is in Google contacts. The dialer app is able to display big photos when you make a call or you have one incoming. When this photos are saved in Google Contacts, are down scaled. So, when you reset the phone or get a new one, the photos are small.
Do you know caller picture's size in S4? Is it 1080*1080 or 720*720?

There's a workaround for this.
Create the contact of the person in 'Phone' and mark the contact of the phone as default (Open contact->menu->mark as default). The hassle though is you re-create it for every contact you have.
I only do this though for frequent callers, and for callers that I have a high resolution pic.

Yesterday I noticed that this problem it's fixed by itself ... I didn't do anything and now I have big contact photos again.
Got an S4 today started playing with it and am really getting annoyed... I come from a long line of HTC devices and have never been this disgusted with a phone. All the cool bells and whistles are nice but I bought a phone to call people.. this phone takes way too many steps just to make a call. Where is the contact widget to simplify this to one touch. I have tried every contact widget on the market and either they dont work with touchwiz, have low res pictures, or they are really small icons. I know there is a small dialer app available on the phone but I dont want 8 individual little pictures of my contacts. I have tried Nova Launcher and it has what I am looking for but it has low res pictures. Also the contact app wont save my groups right I put 8 people in my favorite but if I try to use it in a contact widget it only shows 2 or 4 not the whole 8 that I put in it,,,,,,,
Ok now that I have vented I will ask the questions that I need.
1. Is there a contact widget like the one available in easy mode but high res (or better yet the one like htc sense one).
2. Why does the contact app keep forgetting who I put in a group.
3. When I link two contacts why does it not use the facebook picture as the contact picture on all contacts.
4. I want to keep this phone stock because I dont want to root it till I know I am going to keep it so don't suggest I root and go custom rom.
Thanks for any help.
Have you tried simple contact widget? It does a single 2x2 widget
