[Q] How to tell if Nexus 4 is unlocked? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i'm in the process of trading an old iphone for a unlocked version of the Nexus 4 and I was wondering if there's any way i can tell if the phone is unlocked?

When you turn it on you'll see a padlock if it's unlocked...

Ok perfect, thank you!

The padlock shows you the state of the bootloader, which can be freely locked/unlocked and would have no bearing on whether or not you purchase this phone. So I assume you're actually asking about sim lock, which is also not an issue as all N4's are unlocked

All the Nexus 4 are unlocked. You're safe.
Skickat från min Nexus 4

I'm sorry guys I just looked at the original question I asked and didn't post it correctly, sorry about the confusion. I was referring to carrier lock, I had no idea at that all N4's came unlocked. Anyways sorry for the confusion thank you guys for clarifying that issue for me.

Another thing to keep in mind is that some phones maybe reported lost or stolen and therefore blocked from any network in the U.S

Are we sure about this guys?
People were saying exactly the same thing about the Galaxy Nexus, but there were some sold that were SIM-locked. (It was a few European carriers that were selling them locked... think it was Orange, Vodafone and maybe another.)

All Nexus 4s are GSM unlocked. (I hope I'm not wrong. ) When you get the phone, pop in your Sim and see if you are able to make calls and such. You may have to do a reboot when you first pop in the Sim card.

As I said before: people were saying the same thing about GSM Galaxy Nexus devices. Then we found out that ones sold by certain carriers were locked. All I'm trying to say is that we can't be sure that any devices sold outside of the Google Play Store are all sold unlocked.

efrant is right; however, some carriers (mostly European) say that it is locked, but in fact, it is unlocked. Same for T-mobile USA Nexus's, some reps will tell you that it's locked, but really, it's unlocked

Yeah, but I'm not talking about clueless sales reps or customer service reps. If a device is sold outside of the Google Play Store, it could very well possibly (not probably) be SIM-locked to that carrier. Proof: here is a thread on how to unlock SIM-locked GSM Galaxy Nexus devices that people bought thinking they were unlocked.

I'm fairly sure the ones sold in the UK are SIM unlocked. No carrier sells them in Germany, the ones from the couple of retailers are obviously unlocked.
Anyway, seeing that the good efrant is here: shouldn't flashing the stock image remove a (possible) SIM lock..?

Unfortunately no. The lock is stored on a partition not normally flashed by the user, and not included in the factory images from Google.

Sim locked Nexus One

Hi guys,
I have a question. I just won a Nexus One on ebay and the guy that sells it tells me it's SIM locked to T-Mobile. Is there such a version ? And if so, how easy is it to unlock it myself ?
Waiting for your answers, thanks in advance!!!
Nope. All N1's are sim unlocked.
Even when bought with a T-Mobile program ? Sorry for asking again but this guy insists that it's locked. And I also found some site that offer unlock services for the Nexus One, so I reaaaaaally want to make sure before buying one as I won't be able to return it if there is a problem as I live in Greece

My understanding is that no N1's are sim locked. Google said the same when the phone was released. Worst case scenario is that you'll have to drop $10-15 to get an unlock code online, but I'm pretty sure it's unlocked.
Anyone else care to comment?
All Nexus Ones come unlocked. There is no locked version of the Nexus One - it would defeat one of the imperial concepts Google is shipping with the phone.
if that is the case so why people is buying unlocked N1s
it's much cheaper to buy T-Mobile version and then put any sim inside
am i right or i am missing something????

The T-Mobile version requires a 2 year contract which over its lifespan will cost more than buying the unsubsidized version upfront.
And to the OP, Google has said that all N1 phones are unlocked whether its subsidized or not - one of the advantages of selling the phone themselves.
Even if your phone 'is' Sim locked, which it's probably not, after 90 days of service with T-Mobile, you can call them, ask for an unlock code, and they will send you one via email, for free. Don't pay money to some idiot on eBay when you can do this yourself at zero cost, especially since you likely won't have to do it at all.
Also, stop pressuring the seller about whether or not it's really locked or not. Maybe he'll look into it, find out it's really unlocked after all, and jack up the price!

It would be an option if the phone was locked... but it's not. I don't know of any way that a normal consumer can lock a sim unlocked phone.

I know it's not locked, but he's paranoid it could be. It was just a suggestion to ease his fears
I know for a fact that some nexus ones are locked
I know this is an old thread, but it's what i found try to figure out why i my phone didn't work with a tmobile sim while on a business trip. I Purchased my nexus one from KT olleh in Korea in march '11. I call KT and they connected me to HTC in Korea. HTC gave me the unlock code for free over the phone. I just wanted to share so that other people with locked N1s don't think they going insane. The FAQ should probably be updated.
FAQ Updated:
- Q13: Is Nexus One carrier-locked? Will it work with my carrier / network?
A: There should be no such thing as carrier-locked N1. All the rumors of carrier-locked N1s, including bits of misinformation from SFR/Vodafone, are untrue. There might be several weird cases, only one reported on the forum after 1 year of phone existence, in which the previous statements won't hold - but if truly existent, these are abnormalities.

No they aren't. There are multiple threads to confirm this. I have a Sprint Nexus 6 and it works on T-Mobile with no problem.
Not true. I have a "Sprint" N6 and popped in my AT&T sim and it works fine.
Has anyone been able to confirm this if purchased from Amazon?

I got a Nexus 6 straight from Sprint, and I'm using my Verizon sim. The Verizon sim actually works better. I only have data with my sprint sim I can't send or receive texts or make or receive calls. I get a message cannot validate you account when trying to make a call. Everything works flawlessly with my Verizon sim.

Not to sound like an advertisement but I got my att model from bestbuy sim locked and used Cellunlocker to unlock it.
as of this moment, onlty att locks the sim. people are speculating if verizon will also do this, but its only att at the moment.
Another nod for Sprint being unlocked. I just put my N6 that I got 2 days after it hit the Sprint shelf on Tmobile and it rings for incoming calls again. Sprint has network issues and I got tired of missing calls and having cust service always start out with "factory reset your phone." My note 3 had the same issue on Sprint. 15 mins for Tmob to setup the account and put the sim in. 0$ and a better plan price to boot.

my experience with Verizon's version of the Galaxy Nexus left a bad taste in my mouth. I will be very very hard pressed to ever buy a verizon branded phone ever again. they do get my money though. That I don't mind paying for because I have signal everywhere I go and the legacy unlimited data plan.
The carrier locks aren't really a big deal in any case. $20 and you can get it unlocked at any number of cell unlocking sites.
Would rather it not be locked at all, but isn't that big of a deal....
I just paid to get mine unlocked so I can sell my nexus. I really don't like it

Probably the paying part to need to unlock it.
As of today, if you are not under contract with the carrier that the phone is locked to, or owe them money due to an EIP, they have to unlock the phone.

it's still wrong information, mine is with a contract through sprint, it's still fully unlocked, I can put any sim in and I'm good to go, t-mobile was the same way, at&t was the only one that did a lock and we still have yet to find out about verizon

AT&T are the only ones that are carrier locked, unless it was purchased outright or paid off, I would really double check with whoever you're buying it from and have them meet you at a sprint store to actually check everything out before you commit

Verizon N6 Fastboot OEM Unlock Supported

I was just on the Verizon Wireless site looking at the new Nexus 6 that was released today and it prompted a live chat with a representative. I decided to go ahead and ask her if the device was locked and if so, did it support Fastboot OEM Unlock. She said went to check with her tech team and they confirmed that it was able to be unlocked with that method. Finally, and unlocked bootloader

I'm really hoping that someone who's buying the phone from Verizon soon can confirm on here if this is true for sure. I won't be upgrading for a couple months but I'm really curious!
They'll tell you anything you want to hear to get you to buy something.
"check with her tech team" = going to take a leak in the bathroom....
Lets wait till someone has phone in hand!
The galaxy nexus was, right? Is Verizon even getting a unique part number?
Its fine I wouldn't worry,its a nexus vzw didn't mess with !
I don't know why people assumed verizon nexus would be locked its the same thing as others just has verizon logo on it

To anyone doubting.. Every single Nexus 6, regardless of where you bought it, will be bootloader unlockable with fastboot oem unlock. End of speculation.
I think the biggest question is will there be an OEM partition filled with a bunch of garbage like the ATT version.

What he said. A Nexus is a Nexus and will always have an easy unlockable bootloader. I've been tinkering with Androids for many years and this one is written in stone, Verion can do nothing to change it.
I should find out by Thursday.
All verizon lte phones are sim unlocked and usually have global bands. ATT is the absolute worst carrier.

I was reading that about another phone, the telecos lock phones not Google,
From what I read,
In Japan there is no law or lack of laws to unlock the phone after the contract ends so your stuck with that carrier,I don't know if you can even pay them to unlock it
you don't want to get a phone in Japan if you plan to travel, a friend phone was simlocked and he had to buy another phone so we sold it as parts,
I am sure, someone will post a way to unlock this phone, if it is sim locked by any carrier. So far, every phone has a third party unlock solution.

That's how it used to be. Japan made it law where they have to unlock your phone if you ask. But, the companies get their cut because they make it so you have to use the phone with them for 180days before they do. Even then you can only cancel service with the phone companies in person. They do not allow you to cancel over the phone.
I can tell you for sure it can be,I'm writing this on an EE simlocked (for now) nexus 6p. I didn't think nexus would be, I've owned the last three, but it definitely can. However, mine cost £390 + £10 top up, and the unlock fee was £8.99, so it was still £41 cheaper than the play store for me.
If you're trying to buy the gold nexus it's available on the google play store right now and should be unlocked. CES huawei just announced it.

Yep, I bought my Nexus 6P at Softbank in Japan, and it is simlocked (tried a French SIM card, no success).
The guy at Softbank told me the company hasn't agreed to allow customers to unlock their phones after 6 months (as Docomo has been doing for long, and AU announced they would recently).
Even when that happens, it might only be for a selection of devices, most probably released after they say so...!
I hope a way to unlock it will show up some day (so far, I haven't found anything)...

Carrier bought vs Google bought nexus 6p?

I know that manufactures like to create 10 different models of the same phone for different parts of the world. That being said are Carrier bought phones that some model as the one google. What are the core differences, can carrier bough 6p have the bootloader unlocked and rooted, added bloatware, and delayed updates?
Thanks

This only applies if you live in the US. In fact, in some countries you cannot get the phone from Google. You would have to buy it from a carrier.
Response to OP: I know that my friend in Japan has his Sim Locked so he cannot change carriers until he unlocks his sim. His carrier is SoftBank.
