Phone Signal on SG4? - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got question for guys that have went from SG1 to SG3. I am on AT&T in SE Ky. and a Lake I fish on has never got much or any phone signal while on the Lake and I have Flashed various Modems to try to get improvement. My wife had an old iphone 3 and if I use it on the Lake though it still not great I get much better reception. My question is for those that have went from older SG1 to SG3 have you notice better reception in areas that you have had poor signal before? Or are the Modems the same in both SG1 and newer version? I really don't want to go to iphone but I need coverage while fishing in case of Emergencies.
Thanks

My bad I see SG4 not out yet. So I change question to how is SG3 reception vs older phone.
Thx

settings for better reception?

i switched to att because i got a free 8525 and supposedly i got better reception at my home. when i first got the phone i went into field test mode and reception was about -85db. lately it has been around -98db. are there any settings to help get better reception?
i believe there is.. maybe try a different radio.. i can tell you one thing.. i had a tmobile mda and couldnt hold signal in my basement no matter what. but now that i have the 8525 unlocked i pull 2 bars constant
bump. my 30 days are coming up soon. called att and they put in an incident form. there's nothing else they can do. i love this phone and my rate is good. any way to get better reception?

All i know is that my Xperia's reception is awesome! Even better than my iPhone's. No harm in giving it a shot - worst case, doesn't work... best case, you get the perfect phone!
ok, all I know is that that is the number one thing many X1 owners is talking about. It is already well known. If you compare it to the iPhone 3G i can understand that it is better but in other cases. I don't think so.

Well... i was comparing it to the iPhone 'cos it is what i have other than the Xperia. But i can definitly say with 100% certainty that my Xperia's performance is awesome! Better than my cousin's HTC Touch Diamond, and my friend's Nokia... (Xperia is most definitely the best windows mobile device out there that goes head on with all other devices)
Of course it is the best phone on the market, no doubt. But the reception is giving me dropped calls and that is not ok for me in a big city.
The only reception problems I have are thanks to poor O2 reception in my house. Its no different to any other phone though from what I can tell.
I tested a T-Mobile SIM in my X1 and it was much better. So it might not be the X1 at fault, could be the network.
maybe your x1 is faulty... I don't have any reception problems, comparing with my previous phone (se w910) reception is the same...
both have "less bars" than my "previous-previous" phone but thats because that was runing in 3g mode and w910 and x1 stay all day in hsdpa mode.
Well, my provider have bad reception in my appartment. But my crappy Nokia N81 didn't have any problem with that. The thing with Three, that is my operator, is that they don't have GSM when the 3G reception is bad. The strange thing is that when I'm at the countryside where my parets lives I have full HDSPA reception. Maby the x1 dosen't have bad reception but it is not working so well with only 2 bars of reception.

Could be... but i went to a wedding 2 hours from Lahore, and i got very little signal strength there. It even dropped to 1 bar at times... but regardless of the weak signal, i didn't face any call drops other than once when the signal completely tanked.
Talking about reception... when i got my iPhone, my old Mobilink number gave me tons of trouble. Not only call drops but also constant charges for Edge/GPRS which i wasn't even using most of the time. When i switched the network to Warid, no more problems.
Who knows what could be the problem. My advice is to try flashing the software... there is a chance that this problem is due to a software fault or something.
maybe we all have a difference case since most of us use a different network in different country... but just comparing the phone itself with other phones... mine always has the best signal among them no matter what phone you are comparing it to

I recived a PM from emwdava that told me that i had the same problem with three. He is now using Tele2 and that seems to work much better. So maybe the problem lies there. Anyway. I'm stuck with them until the middle of 2010 because of the N81 mentioned before.
Don't know if i should flash with 2.1 of one well known ROM or wait for an update from SE.

Your guess would be as good as mine.
Three might be the problem here... but there's also a chance - in my opinion - that it might be resolved/improved on refreshing the mobile firmware.
Good luck to you!
I think that the problem is your provider!
Watch my case. I have two diferent providers, one is vodafone the other is optimus and im from portugal.
as much optimus as vodafone declares that in my zone I have 100% of covering
watch the fotos!
If I dont have the two diferent providers and so have the optimus I will tell you that the problem is the xperia.
sory for my bad english.
Cheers

[Q] Epic reception Issues

So here it is. I have an Evo and Im in those forums all the time. Mostly browsing, posting occasionally, but mostly just reading and trying to soak in as much info as possible.
Ive started reading up on the Epic recently. My girl just recently got one, and she loves it. Few minor issues here and there, but for the most part shes crazy about it. I am not, personally. Coming from an Evo running CM6, Id like to think I know a little about what a fast phone is. In my opinion, the Epic does have a bit of lag. However I read that there is a fix for it, but I havent read much beyond that.
The real problem I have with her phone is the reception. I have read from a few places that the reception on this thing is less than stellar. Example: I live in Coral Springs, FL. She lives in Coconut Grove. Its about 50 miles away. Now, when Im at her house, I get great signal, decent speeds, and never am without service. Her on the other hand, cant get a signal in her own house to save her life. Cant get a signal in most of Miami for that matter. Chances are its a defective phone, **** happens. But I also saw that some people complained of an update completely ruining signal strength. Im at a loss. I just wanted some opinions on what you guys think it could be.
Is it worth trying to fix? Should I swap it out for a different one, or just get an Evo? Looking for some guidance here
And if it matters, since someone will ask, her phone is completely stock. All Ive done is install Launcher Pro.
Thanks in advance for any advice or flaming, either works for me.

Living in Florida, I know Sprint's service here is TOP NOTCH compared to other places in the country. I frequently go to South Florida to visit my gf and sister. I haven't had reception issues with the Epic or Hero that I've owned (Pre, now thats a different story... ****ing phone). Anyway, I would say defective unit. I get better service (not bars) with the Epic. There is one dead zone on the drive down from Brevard to South Florida right at the border of Brevard County. The Hero and Pre always drop out. Epic didn't. My Download speeds using apps as a guide are slower, upload speeds... well, you can read about that. However, functionally, the phone is faster than the Hero. Sprint TV produces a picture that is usable and everything seems to download faster (can't do a side-by-side test over 3G as my Hero is deactivated). Market apps download and install much faster, and streaming content online is a much better experience than the Hero (no matter what rom/overclock kernel I had on it). The Epic is a great phone. If she still can, I would see if she could get it exchanged.
I haven't gone to my Sister's place in Tamarac, but in the past, service has been horrible in her house with Sprint/Verizon. My sister has T-Mobile for that reason. Really, its the structure of her house because when I go outside, I get no issues with reception. I've noticed the signal isn't that great out west. My Gf couldn't even get signal on her pre (grrrr) over by Coral Square. Hero was much better than the Pre and the Epic so far has been a little better than the Hero.
As far as gain readings...:
Right now in my Room which has mediocre service (I'm on an island, I don't expect great service, but its decent). My signals for both phones are as follows:
Hero -93dBm (shows 3/4 bars on Froyo ROM)- no 3G test
Epic -101dBm (shows 2/6 bars, completely stock)- 3G download speed: 1233, 3G upload speed: 142

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks to have been a defective phone. She went and swapped it out for a new one, and is currently experiencing no issues at all. She can even pick up faint 4g occasionally from inside her house, whereas before, she couldn't get it even in a place I know it to be. So now I'm jealous lol.
Thanks again

[Q] Bad reception / dropped calls / no network

Hey everyone. I don't know if this has been discussed already but I did search the crap out of google only to find, we'll, not much really...
The topic title says it all.. I am having major issues with terrible data reception resulting in unsent SMS and straight to voicemail calls. It is getting really annoying. I have tried everything.. Changed SIM card, Odin back to 4.3 stock, flashed random modems in hope they work...
The really annoying part is that it gets great reception in so local areas.. I went to the BELL store to whine about the problem and the darnn phone was getting 4 bars. Made me look like a fool.
My wife has an s3 with bell and while I get missed calls she gets great reception so it can't be the ISP ..
Is anyone else about to go nuts? Is anyone looking at possible tweaks around this? Thanks

No seriously.
I have a Canadian Note 3, on Rogers. Occasionally I get only 3G, no signal, and little LTE.
Only in the most crowded places is there good signal, like downtown Toronto.

No, I also have terrible reception problems on mine. I'm in the US (T-Mobile). This phone has the worst reception and I basically don't get any bars in most buildings I go into (where I used to have full bars on my galaxy s2). For data, I only see "E" all the time and rarely see 4G, again in places where I used to always have excellent reception with my old galaxy S2.
Waiting to see if anyone has a tip or a fix for this. I can't return the phone because I bought it second hand. :crying:

At&t reception, I still feel it's better than other phones?

Just spend the day at the lake yesterday, on a dock...Usually I'm lucky to get any reception at any place in that area, but I was able to walk up on the hill and get LTE where no other phone has ever gotten it, even just a few weeks ago and again 2 months ago.
I see a lot of people saying the reception isn't good, but I feel it's better than any other phone I've had to date? Regardless of what the signal bars show or the db shows, I can get signal where I never have before.
Just sayin'

I think the Wi-Fi and cellular reception problems are in the european model - I had great reception with B20 software and the B27 update made it even better

This is a good point. It might be helpful if people would include which specific region model they are using. My reception is definitely on par with my Note 3 on AT&T in the USA (USA model).

My Axon 7 blows away my Zenfone 2.
My axon 7 beat the pants off my Nexus 6p when I tried using speedtest.net. Both wifi and lte were significantly faster. Also using the US model. B27 seems to have improved things even further. No complains at all!
I'm using A2017U in europe, LTE band 3. My previous phone was Xperia Z and comparing Axon 7 to it, cell and wifi reception is better in any way of using (2.4 and 5ghz, 3G and LTE). So no problem with wifi and cell reception on mine A2017U. Very satisfied.
Ditto

Ditto on both points. I also previously used the Note3 and I get a super signal with the Axon 7, even in places where the Note was hit/miss. Love the phone.
Troll thread. It's obvious that a sizeable minority of owner have reception problems and telling people that 'I'm alright Jack' is unhelpful at best and smug and weird at worst.
Idea for another thread:
Lots of smartphone owners complain of easily cracked screens. I threw mine under a bus and it's fine.

I don't agree, not as good as my Moto X or my Idol 3 on band 17 LTE or HSPA 850mhz. It's the lower bands it has an issue with.
Sent from my ZTE A2017U using Tapatalk
I have good reception for LTE in most places. WiFi is very good. However, when it comes to radio signal for LTE this is the worst phone of all that I have ever owned. I do not get involved in all sorts of tests but according to the Signal strength mine is usually about -5 higher than all the others. It is acceptable in most places as I live in a large city with good reception on AT&T. However, as I related on the ZTE forum I was at an assembly the other day and I was the only person with an Axon 7 in the whole place. Every other person had either an iPhone (most popular) or some other Android like a Samsung Galaxy. In the outer hallway I had a good signal, but when I went into the main auditorium all I got was a flashing red notification light letting me know that I had ZERO signal, while my wife's Moto X Pure and my daughters shattered iPhone 6 both had very good reception. The Moto is on T-Mobile and the iPhone is on Verizon. I do not think the carrier had anything to do with this issue. Clearly there is a problem with the Axon 7 when it comes the LTE signal strength. I am beginning to think it may be hardware related somehow and unable to be repaired with a software update ...unless they boost the signal strength through software which will also take a toll on battery longevity. Maybe they have the antennas positioned poorly inside the phone?? So I am trying to patiently wait to see what ZTE accomplished with their next update. But if they cannot fix the LTE signal strength then I will have no choice but to move on to another phone. Even though most of the time I am using WiFi, having a phone that cannot communicate in low signal areas when every other phone can, is not acceptable.
On TMO I'm getting a 2x stronger signal than my S7 Edge. Quite impressed. The Wi-Fi signal is much stronger also. I can stream music in my shed from the Wi-Fi ap in the house. The S7E couldn't even detect the signal.
