Hey folks,
New to the rooting game. Downgraded my G900V from 5.0 -> 4.4.2 NCG, towelroot, SuperSu, Safestrap 3.75, Titanium backup. Backed up via SafeStrap custom recovery for stock and pasted it to my desktop as well as a full Titanium backup.
I am ready to enter the custom rom game! I am sad that I cannot try Cyanogenmod because that seems to be the top dog.
I am hoping to retain these earlier KitKat OS versions because they seem to run infinitely raster than stock 5.0 pre-root. However, I've never had one rooted and debloated so who knows.
I am looking for max customizability. I was all about customizing my UI like crazy prior to rooting on 5.0 using apps. So highly customizable UI, battery life +, and stability if at all possible.
1) What do you guys suggest? Thanks!
2) Do all TouchWiz-based ROMS require that you flash another firmware version prior to installation?
As of right now, I am looking at the Alliance ROM but it was released like a year ago and wondering if there's a better or more updated version.
I found a link via galaxys5root dot c0m
Is this a safe download?

I revised my original post and apologize again. I am just interested in what my options are.
I haven't heard back on a working download link for Build 2 of Alliance ROM so I am venturing into the MOAR ROM territory. Just to be safe, I purchased Titanium PRO and it's being synced to Drive as we speak.
After it completes, I'm going to attempt my first ROM flash and nervous. From what I've gathered, I need to boot into SafeStrap, full wipe, install the zip from ex/int SD-card, and then boot into download mode. From there, I flash VZW_BOA8_RETAIL_FIRMWARE_ONLY.tar.md5.
Now, once I do this, the post says that SafeStrap won't work anymore. If I follow these instructions:
"7. Safestrap will no longer work unless you use odin and flash NI2_STOCK_KERNEL_FOR_SAFESTRAP.tar.md5 or any VZW KITKAT kernel. Then you can enter Safestrap. Once you flash file or whatever you need to do in safestrap remember to boot to download mode from safestrap and then use odin to flash VZW_BOA8_RETAIL_KERNEL_ONLY.tar.md5 or the VZW_BOA8_RETAIL_FIRMWARE_ONLY.tar.md5. Then you will be good to go. This process must be done every time you need to use SafeStrap!"
... will I still be able to run safestrap and retain the ROM? Or is that just in case I want to access my backed up recovery and revert back to my custom recovery pre-ROM?

XDA changed their stance on these kinds of threads and are allowing them to to stay open as long as they don't turn into a flame fest.
I am curious too, as to what is out there that runs well. I am coming from an AT&T LG G2 with lots of options to a this phone that seems to be much more restricted than anything I have seen in the past. This looks like its going to be far more work to get few results. Also it seems like it's easier to brick than the G2 was. Obviously I have a lot of reading to do, and probably a downgrade from OE1 if I want root. I just want to know if there is a ROM worth doing all this work for. Thank you!
It's complicated but worth it.
I'm not going to pick a favorite, but anyone worth their search engine can see what I'm using.
The battery life was horrible straight out of the box, and 'something' had to be done. I have flashed different phones from Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, etc. from at least 4 different carriers. Nothing compares with how much harder it is just to get root on our Samsung-SM-G900V variant with it's locked bootloader. CyanogenMod is not even an option, so I'm using a custom 5.0 TouchWiz ROM.
The debloating zip via ADB is what really fixed the poor battery life.
It is worth it.
My battery life is now 'amazing'.
The only other phone I had that even came close to battery life and screen on time like this, was my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2, running CM10.2
Is it worth the effort? Even after trying a short cut and getting stuck in a loop with no recovery? Having to use Odin just to start over? Not having any success until I found a YouTube tutorial?
It's up to you. Perhaps you don't mind bloatware. Maybe you can always find a way to plug it in for a charge.
Good luck.
I have an s5 on Verizon and would like to root what is fastest and safest way?

Are you talking about THE PURGE? The debloater recommends a stock ROM; does this mean I cannot use this option and use OptimalROM or MOAR? I'd like to apply it to my current setup (Optimal)

I forgot to mention that I am currently calibrating my battery using a Play Store app. I wonder if this will help
Also, I did it the manual way as well. What a serious pain in the rear lol. Afterwards, with my newfound confidence of rooting, I went to work on my wife's LG G2. What a joke!
Her battery life is unreal. At the end of the day, she sits at 60% battery life after hefty use. I am getting a bit jealous.

Update: I apologize for not searching before posting. I stalked all your activity here and found your exact process for debloating. Thank you! I look forward to seeing the difference.
Now if only my damn phone would charge to 100% to finish calibration!
ahhhhh. why am I still draining the battery so much?
wiped my rom, installed optimalrom for oc4 lollipop, ran debloat script for lollipop and rocking minimal data wifi, screen brightness, keeping ram free, etc. greenifying everything except streams.
what is going on here?

wrong thread!
Just for curiosity, I have a stock nexus and my lasts phones I usually rooted to actualize with new rom, because always them was behind. Our phone is been actualized stock software until now, and I want to know from who rooted their nexus which benefits can u see of root our nexus 4?
P.s: if moderators not see that is a relevant post , can delete, just let know me first.
Thanx

Benefits are the same. After rooting you can install cutom roms. You get better battery life, USB fast charger, App opps, UI customization etc. But you will not get direct updates from Google.
So I just flashed stock image 5.1.1 and my battery life really took a hit. What custom rom has the best battery life these days? I am definitely not a power user, I just want long battery life.

Almost agree except for "After rooting you can install cutom roms". Rooting has nothing to do with custom roms. In order to flash a custom rom you need a custom recovery and an unlocked bootloader
Back to topic, I root my device to get my freedom. There are noumerous apps (wich I use) that require a rooted device. So, for me no root, no joy.
cheers

You can try SimpleAOSP Rom by snakeater. Install Hellscore Kernel or modified Semaphore kernel by Snakeater. Use conservative governer with touch boost to get better battery life.
hey guys, so i have a retgb stock rom for lollipop, how would i go about just flashing the modem from that rom. I want to do this to test a theory i have about the battery drain on marshmallow, to see if its caused by the new modem, any help would be appreciated...
certainly not caused by the modem. Did you clean flash? What did you do to upgrade? etc? have you disabled wifi/bluetooth scanning in the extended location settings, deleted play services data yet?

updated from a stock moto x play single sim, retgb to marshmellow via normal ota, had no root or bootloader unlocked. After the ota i installed twrp and rooted, wiped cache and data, did a factory reset. Then did everything you said above. Then tried with squid kernel, still have massive battery drain about 1 hour sot and barely lasts me 1 day. So yea... i thought it was worth a shot just trying my idea about the modem...

Mobile standby and phone idle, i have xposed and greenify installed, no speacial apps installed if you dont include kernel adiutor. Im gonna try going back to 5.1.1 stock and try a 6.0 stock rom via twrp, il post the results later.

no, deep sleep is being used like 92% of the time
So basically everything is working fine. In some other thread I read xposed seriously cripples battery life. I'm not using it so I can't tell

well im currently going back to stock 5.1.1 for now, im gonna try my therory, then i try with and without xposed, see if it makes a difference
@Benjamin_L well i can safely say that xposed makes no differece that i can see to the battery life so far. After flashing the old stock (5.0, including the modem, through fastboot) then going back to 6.0 by flashing the stock rom by GtrCraft via twrp my battery life seems to have improved quite a bit. So maybe it is the modem after all? Also why did you say it cant be the modem in the first post? just curious...

I ran both modems on 5.1.1 and 6.0 on several roms and stock firmwares and there was no difference, except for rom related things. And I never heard modem influences battery life dramtically if at all. On my old n4 i flashed several basebands and never noticed any difference in battery consumption at all.

Hi... EX Kernel shouldn't impact your battery life if you use the same settings as in the previous version... You haven't installed/updated any app since, which could be responsible of your battery drain?
Anyway, if you want to downgrade and supposing you're on 4.06, download 4.05 and install it with TWRP. Simple as that.

This thread has 7.1.1, 7.0, and 6.0.1 , if you have ex kernnel manager you can probably download the version you want from thread and use app to install. Or use twrp to install it like 5.1 said.

You mentioned settings, so are you using EXKM? If you upgraded via EXKM as opposed to manually flashing, there are copies of the "express" installation zip files in the ElementalX folder of your storage. In TWRP just hit "Install" and then navigate to the EX folder. Pick the previous version you want and flash away. These express files have your settings saved already, so there is no Aroma installer to go through. Another advantage of EXKM.

I noticed the difference in battery life IMMEDIATELY after the update took place and my phone restarted. I've had ****ty battery life since I bought it. A couple months ago, I finally installed WETA rom and applied settings that got me all day battery life and wonderful performance. Now a new kernel update comes out, i upgrade, and suddenly my phone is **** again. I didn't install anything new. I could actually feel my phone get warm as I used it. I've gotten so used to that not happening for a while now...

Please explain this more. Do you mean it stores past versions you have installed on your phone
Simply brows your sdcard and look for a directory ElementalX. If you used the app to update the kernel, that's the download directory for that app so you can simply manually flash via TWRP any version you had in the past.

Only if you used EX Kernel Manager app to update the kernel.... but your response failed to answer that key question, and I would save the accusations until after you can actually reproduce your issue. Sure, the first step is to back track to the previous build, but even on default settings EX Kernel is going to give you better battery life than the stock kernel. The next step is finding out what is actually draining your battery. There are many threads and apps dedicated to tracking down exactly what is causing your battery drain... and it isn't your kernel. There is also a sub-forum dedicated to EX Kernel.
I just got a used Nexus 6P as a true backup phone, and couldn't get it at a better price $100 . The phone has everything I need, especially the great camera and HDR+ enabled default! I also have the latest android 8.0 on it. Is there root for android 8 on the nexus 6p yet? How about custom rom such as Lineage to improve battery life, even though the bone stock android is decent already. Much appreciated for inputs.
for rooting use Magisk.
There's so much option for Custom ROM.
PureNexus, Resurrection ROM, LineageOS, etc. i've had tried those 3 ROMs. They're great.

Please walk me thru this process if possible. There is not a stable oreo rom or lineagos right? So maybe flashing the kernel on stock oreo is good? I'm trying to maximize battery life while keeping hdr+

Eventually there will be but not at the moment. I'm using the stock ROM rooted and EX kernel. Just install TWRP and then place the SU and EX zipfiles in the root folder, use TWRP to flash SU first and then EX. With all default settings EX kernel will definitely improve your battery. Good luck.
Ok i will look on how to root. Hows franco kernel vs ex kernel?

Both good. but i prefer elementalX for so many reasons...
Franco is what it say " Flash & forget " just install it and forget it , Good battery without affect the Performance.
usually I switch between those kernels
