[Q] Mobilicity Panache stuck in HTC logo, 100% stock - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so a friend gave me his HTC Panache and I was planning on using it as a spare phone (or probably as my second line) and was poking around if I could root it. I was reading around XDA and found a way to root. However, there isn't any warning anywhere saying that the Mobilicity/Videotron Panache is significantly different from the myTouch 4G itself. I could have possibly borked this phone. It was still able to boot previously, but at a point it just hanged and started boot looping until the mobilicity logo and back to the htc logo...
so, I did a better search and found someone saying trying the factory reset option from fastboot... so I did.. however, it just got stuck on fastboot when I select factory reset, now it just stays on the htc logo (doesn't even show the mobilicity logo anymore) to no avail.
Any ideas? I'm not new to the htc land, I still have an HTC Desire Z (Vision) probably dicked around it and almost bricked it, but it is still up and running till now. What I'm new at is that this thing just won't do anything I try to make it do. :/ possibly a dead phone by now. But I suppose I could flash the stock image and get it back since fastboot still works... But I can't find the damn mobilicity stock rom... :/
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
EDIT: Ok, so I did find the Mobilicity STOCK RUU... HOwever, hboot doesn't seem to flash it... It's been stuck in trying to update the bootloader... For TWO HOURS, TWICE! I don't know what to do now... And with enough views already on this thread and no response... maybe I should give up and shelve the thing... It's sad, but resources for this phone is outdated and insufficient. The mytouch 4G is fine, however, the panache, just lacks documentation.

You should read the stickies and/or Google search using the failure description. Hard to believe you'd get past the most known failure of this phone in any of its variants.
In any case, if RUU is stuck updating bootloader - your phone is dead.

Have you tried the Panache thread here on xda? Panache users might be able to help you.

I've got it checked... And yeah the chip is indeed dead... I goes my bad? Lol I've gone through the sticks and ask the searchy stuff... I've been on XDA for a long time even before android was mainstream...
I guess this phone just carries a bad chip.. I just didn't want to give up on it... I like a good challenge, of sorts... I guess I'm going to shelve this on display... Haha, I wasn't even able to really do anything to it and it died... Ah well

Nope, chip is dead. Not even Jtag can save it, according to the technician whom I brought the phone to. The phone was prone to chip failure, and a small bad flash killed it.It isn't as resilient as other phones.

Slow down. You will end up truly bricking in haste. Please read the wiki on how to manually root, follow everything in there. Its simple. . . .
I'm having the same problem with my dads phone, though mine turned out flawless. All I did was install visionary r12, temp root, then perm root. When It booted it stayed at the HTC splash screen.

There was a topic here guiding how to return to stock for people that modified system folder by removing the google goggles. That should work.

I used to have a G1 and I bricked it .. got stuck in the 'G1' logo...
I'm not yet ready to perma-root my G2 ... I'm waiting for the 1 click Perma Root.. is there such thing??
yes, I'm a chicken..
Try to stay away from one click apps.. they might be the easiest way out, but the most risky as well. Take your time to learn how to use ADB and do everything manually. Use the Rage Against the Cage method to obtain S-OFF and Perm Root..
Updated with tmo ota. No dice. I'm still stuck at HTC screen o death.

[Q] Running roms from the sd card?

Thanks for your time and help. I have tried to research this before posting.
the problem:
My girlfriend's HTC Glacier has the bad emmc chip. It started with the random restarts earlier this week. It has been getting more and more sluggish over time. On the way home today, it lost all network connectivity, even after a restart, then pulling battery, sim, and sd, replacing then restarting.
What has been done to the phone so far:
It was unstable several months ago at which time I permarooted it, unlocked it, and flashed the rooted gingerbread update from the permaroot post here on xda. ( we didn't try to rdma it because it was an ebay purchase and already past manufacturer warranty) I did not flash the engineering bootloader (wish I had and that will probably be one of my first steps now). It has cwm flashed and a backup of the rom. It is turned off now while deciding how to proceed. Other than that, It has had no custom roms flashed or anything else of the sort.
What I am hoping is possible:
I have a Samsung 16GB class 10 (rated up to 23 MB/s read and 21 MB/s write). I am wondering if it is possible to create a bootable sd and run cm7 (for example) like the nook color.
Is this possible? Would it require a custom kernel to bypass the emmc and use the sd card as the rom instead?
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. I am hoping to help my girlfriend nurse this phone to the end of her contract. Is it worth the effort or is it a lost cause?
if you can still boot into the android system... go to market and find Bootmanager.. it's $2.99 but wayy worth it.
but also, read my guide here:

hope it helps.

Do you think that multibooting would be a workaround for the failing emmc? I will be trying it out.
I am going to follow saranhai's guide and try to stabilize the phone as much as possible first.
I had read that flashing the engineering bootloader is important, would you say that that should be my priority?

i don't think any software related thing can be a workaround for the failed eMMC chip...
once the chip is dead, it's dead. you can't write anything to it. you can't flash ROMs, you can't wipe anything, you can't even boot the device up. if the bootloader is showing Fail-PU when you're trying to restore back, then sorry friend, but it's gone...
as we see it now, nothing besides replacing the hardware itself will fix it.
yes, having the Engineering bootloader is a definite must, that's how you flash radios and such.
As an update, amidst nonstop FC's, I got the engineering bootloader pushed to the phone and installed.
I wiped the cache and dalvic then restored to a cwm recovery. It seems stable so far, but only time will tell.
As soon as I get a chance, I will be installing boot manager and setting it up to boot from the sd. I am glad to get the phone somewhat stable before trying though. I hope that it will take the strain off the emmc and let us keep it going through the end of contract.
Thank you for your help!

Error while formatting /system

Can someone help me with this? I've searched a few threads but they are old or not for this phone. I have clockworkmod 5.0.2.0 and I was trying to flash a new rom. It wasn't working, took over 10min to boot so i took out the battery. Now I can't even restore or install the new rom again. When restoring I get the error while formatting system. Please help
Is this with multiple backups?
yes. i've tried multiple ones
I think it's really messed up, i'm just trying to flash a pd15img now
I am having no success flashing back to stock the normal way... can someone explain what this odin thing is? or how to use adb to flash a stock rom back on? please?
Odin is for Samsung phones, no use for you.
ADB doesn't flash system.
Read the "do I have fried eMMC?" guide. There are at least 2 sticky threads with it.
Okay, I'm starting to think mine is fried... when i tried reflashing the pd15img i get fail PU =[
Yeah, so read that... this phone died =[ I didn't realize this phone had these problems. My sensation has been flashed so many more times and nothing... so umm, can someone tell me how to truely brick this so they can't even know I was rooted?
1) That's unethical.
2) All flashing comes with an inherent risk of failure. You knew, or should have known that, before you flashed in the first place.
Never realized that a software stuff like this could screw you like this. How does a chip fail because you try and update it? But thanks for your attempts at helping.

Do a search on bricking a device in these forums. I've seen very respected and senior users participate in "intentional bricking" so that it couldn't be powered up & discovered that it had been rooted. So while unethical, it does/has happened. One suggestion was to flash a radio that isn't compatible with the phone...although I do not know if it has/will work. But somewhere there is a thread for that..

[Q] Rooting/ROMing?

I am very experienced with my Samsung Droid Charge for Verizon, and I am trying to help my friend with his mytouch 4g. Basically I don't know how to do anything on a HTC phone. On Samsung we have a Windows program called ODIN that can flash anything to the phone (stock software, CWM, kernels, ROMs, radios, backup/restore, repartition). Most of the above we also do with CWM, which we get into by holding volume down, home, and power. Are there equivalents for all this on HTC?
Also, are there any fully working AOSP (preferably ICS or JB) ROMs? Sense would be fine just to get the bloat off. Does S-on or S-off make a difference? That is kind of confusing to me. Note that I would want a generally finished ROM that you can just flash once and not look at again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1388962
knock yourself out.
btw, yes, for HTC Devices, S-Off (basically unlocked bootloader) is required for root access and ROM/mods flashing.

Thanks. Also how easy is it to hard brick this phone? The Charge is nearly impossible, with the only reports of hard bricks unplugging the cable when flashing something in ODIN, or a corruption when changing file systems on the internal memory.

I tried really hard to brick this phone to show my friend its safe to root. No luck lol
Though I did have the good eMMc. Some mt4g's shipped with a bad eMMC which sometimes causes partitions to get corrupt and not Mount correctly therefore rendering the device useless.
Look up failed pu errors on this forum, also there is a tutorial to determine which eMMc your device has.

Yes check your emmc chip to see which one the phone has 50% of the people here will tell you it doesn't matter if u have the good or bad one but its always good to check.
Yes its hard to brick this phone unless u flash a wrong radio because I've flashed from different devices kernels and my phone is still alive..
somehow... but always ALWAYS have a NANDROID just in case and follow the guide Saranhai posted...
Like every ICS / JB ROMs theirs not 1 that stands out to be Perfect they all have their bugs since this device only got Gingerbread but test them for yourself and see which one works the best for your friend and his daily uses of the phone.

Yeah i figured about ICS/JB. We have a cm9 and cm10 ROM with like half the hardware working and then the dev got stuck. What would you say is the best ROM to flash just once and be done with it? I would probably root, tibu, nandroid, and flash the ROM then restore apps.

I think differently. I've never known and don't plan on looking up the emmc on my phone. If I ever had a doubt or fear about anything I did on this device, I probably wouldn't be developing at all. I'd have to say it doesn't matter because at the end of the day no matter what chip you have it should be YOU who decides what you do with your device. Not the other way around.

Those are two pretty good guides. Honestly you have to first read, read and read some more to understand what you have and what can be done with it. Also in development there are answers to your questions under the stickys. Updating your phone would more than likely put it back to full stock status. Also why upgrade to an already 2 yr old software version.
I would recommend fully rooting your phone and the cyanogen method was easier to me. Also remember to google like crazy....

Why do you have two of the same thread?
Listen, here is the deal with the eMMC. Some are faulty, some aren't. If you have a crappy one, flashing CAN speed up the process of the chip giving out. If the chip does goes kaput, though, it always was. The only "bad" chips are the ones that fail. I and many others one here have a glacier with the type of chip people ignorantly refer to as "bad." I have flashed hundreds, perhaps thousands of times and it still works just fine. Understand?
