[Q] Verizon Razr Maxx 4.2 upgrade issues - Droid RAZR M Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I hope I am abiding by the rules of the forums and posting in the right place.
I have been a avid Android fan since the G1 and moved my company into the Razr Maxx when we left Sprint, (AWESOME MOVE).
Everything has been peachy keen until a few very minor issues with the 4.2 Jelly bean upgrade. Some folks have noticed that Voicemail says its logging in when you select the app and also the sound is very "tin-ee" and "echo-ee."
One other thing is that contacts in the contacts list have automatically been split. Is there an option to auto merge contacts?
Any feedback would be excellent, thanks in advance!

Wrong forum. RAZR M and the RAZR Maxx are two different devices. Also, I believe the RAZR line in general is on 4.1.1.
As far as contacts, choose the contact, then edit, then the menu button again to merge contacts.

Scary thing about Rooting - Motorola knows!

Now this is bad. My Maxx HD fell, LCD broke. Digitizer fine.
They said I am out of warranty because the phone was rooted? What?
The assistant said they had access to a database that informed they so. I do not remember having authorized motorola of having info over what I do with the phone... in fact it was a gift, and is MY phone, not theirs, so I do not even know if it was rooted!
Even if that was the case... what does a software thing has to do with a poor display construction? A quick search on google revealed what seems to be a poorly constructed LCD.
So in short. Your phones are sending info about what you do with them all the time to motorola!!! With a system that you do not have access to.
I feel like you got trolled by the rep... or in case they really do have a database like that... shouldn't the user be informed?

make a little noise...
accuse them for spying and you will judge them
but first reflash the original rom
if you can see something on the screen you're ok

I am completely sure it is not rooted. I got the phone and reflashed it to ICS. Then it fell. So if it had root, it for sure gone.
But its horrible that motorola is spying on us. Should we stop some services in the phone? Is there any way to stop that? Are they truly invading my privacy?
There is something that is sending personal info to motorola and I am not happy with that nor anyone should be!
When you first setup your device there is a Motorola privacy notification. The default option there is to send some data to them I believe. I changed it so that it doesn't send anything.
hm I can not access the phone so I do not know.
Has anybody access to that screen so we know it we are agreeing to that? I mean the exact text?
Not sure but I disabled the Motorola services app running and everything still works so perhaps that's the culprit.
Droid RAZR HD (current)
LG Optimus One P-504 (For Sale)
The thing is. The rep said users do not have acess to tahat system. So only they would know.
They have the information, that's true. A european chat support member told me my whole xt910 flashing history. He even asked me why i flashed chinese system on a euro device.
Go to Settings -> Privacy -> Motorola Privacy Policy -> Privacy Profiles....
Check "NONE - No data will be collected, except for anonymous information to keep your device up to date"....
Problem solved. Also, inform yourself by reading their policies. Motorola is one company I'm not really worried about. Facebook is what should worry you. =)
Well, the phone knows. Enter to the user programming menu, in dialer: ##7764726 hit send and set password as 000000. Last item is "device rooting". It checks your status and surely it reports it.

You can disable reporting under security or privacy (one of those two) there is a moto support menu where you can turn off reporting. This doesn't disable the 2 device root checks though.

Got it. Is there a way to mark the device as non rooted, I mean, to revert that marker?
Isint there a code on the phone in fast boot or recovery that states weather its rooted or not?

I buy all my phones used from ebay or craigslist and will never get a new from from verizon and sign a contract.
I feel they are my phones and if I root it it's all on me and I self insure it. I have never taken a phone to verizon to get fixed.

If you fast boot stock then the first marker is changed back to non rooted but the second one can not be reversed currently. Then again with the unlocked bootloader it is theoretically possible to change that back as well but no one has released a method for it. I once asked hash about it and he said he would think about a solution. Once the new kernel is done I'll remind him of the problem.

The location of the qe flag has been found, it's a single byte in the middle of an empty and legacy /misc partition that is read by the ramdisk.
It is rewritten at boot and is not practical to remove it permanently. [mbm] was the one who found it finally.

[VOLUNTEER NEEDED] Anyone Who Is Buying a Google Experience One

Hey Everyone,
I maintain a website, randomphantasmagoria.com, where I maintain a firmware archive of official production Google ROMs for every Nexus and Google Experience device from the OG Droid onward. I plan to archive the Google Experience One ROMs as well, assuming the ROMs actually come from Google and not from HTC.
If someone is buying one, I'd love if you could help me out with something. I need some information on the phone, and you will need to get it as soon as you turn the phone on for the first time, before doing any out-of-the-box system updates.
Here is the info I'll need:
1. The bootloader version. You will have to reboot into bootloader (fastboot) mode to do this. When you do, the bootloader version should be displayed on screen.
2. The baseband version from Settings | About Phone.
3. The value of ro.build.fingerprint from /system/build.prop.
4. IF YOU HAVE AN UPDATE NOTIFICATION: Before applying the update, do the following. Turn on USB debugging after the notification appears on screen. Go into Settings | Developer Options and select "Take Bug Report". Your phone will email a text file to the email address on your Google account. Open that text file and search it for ".zip" (without the quotes) and post the URL to the ZIP file.
This will be unbelievably helpful.
Thank you in advance!

Just a thought. Perhaps this request may be better in the android general section as everybody hear already owns a One so not many will be able to afford to own both.
Also, I suspect that when this device is released, the information you require will be readily available on xda.

When the device is released, based on my past experiences with Nexus devices, it's not a given that the originally shipping firmware info will be available on XDA, unfortunately. The overwhelming majority of people turn their phone on for the first time, see an OTA notification out of the box, and just update it without giving a second thought to the fact that the current firmware info could be useful. haha
But yeah, if nobody indulges me here, I'll probably ask in the Android general section as well.
Isn't HTC archiving the roms themselves? I read that they were going to allow all current Ones to change over to the Google experience edition.

And even if they did, there is no guarantee they'd have the original shipping firmware archived, especially if there's an OTA update out of the box. All I really need is the information in the first post for the shipping firmware. From that point forward, it'll be easy to get all the info for the subsequent updates because XDA will be abuzz with it every time there's an OTA.

group mms question

this is wierd....Im having this issue and hopefully someone can help me out. I can group mms with all my friends except 1. He has a verizon s3 and everytime he responds to a group mms it just goes into his seperate thread. My wife has an iphone and when he responds it goes into the group mms thread like it should. Its really confusing the hell out of me since hes the only person it happens to and i feel like its just with my phone. I looked at his phone and he is responding in the group thread like he should be but it send a seperate text to me instead of going into the group mms thread.

His S3 is not on 4.2 or higher I'm guessing so his phone can't do group SMS (which uses MMS to communicate).
Blame Verizon, they are always freaking late on everything! The last update was 4.1.2 which came out in May but was released long ago. The other Samsung S3s all got 4.2 already (I think) but Verizon is slacking.

The Google Wallet Project

Ok so it seems quite a few people are still interested in getting this working, so, lets pool out resources and experiences and see if we can make it happen.
this is basically a repeat of the discussion og this so are on another thread but it was kinda off topic so i started this one.
so this has been the evolution of what ive tryed so far, pretty basic i know, but that why im here to bring people more talented then myself to the table....
r57v5
this will side load without root, and will open but give and carrier error and force closes if left installed of the GW versions ive try this is the only only one that installs with out anything extra.
r52v7
so after root was acheived (by jcase) i installed the xposed frame work here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1574401 and wallet mod here: http://www.modaco.com/topic/354635-xmod-region-device-root-patched-google-wallet/ i was playing with something else, DL the app from this thread: http://androidforums.com/lg-optimus-elite/644930-custom-boot-animation-sound-without-root.html It asked me to DL another app that installed aditional shared libraries and now one more of the wallet apks will install. and now this verison will install where it previously would not.
r96v16
i believe this is the newest version, but it wont install

tried restoring the titanium backup from my gnex to the MAXX, but it just hangs on direct and indirect mode, probably would still have the library issue even if it worked.
Attached is the output from the manifest XML, hopefully it has clues. A dump from a sprint moto X might help I heard theirs works.
i think i found the missing library, ill need to see a moto x system dump to confirm it is the one but from a discussion i found at code, google, this has occured with other apps and it was recommended that a certain jar file library missing may be the cause. now this was about and different library and app so the specifics dont apply here. but the nexus 4, s4 gpe, htc one gpe, all have a file in system/framework titled "com.android.nfc_extras" this file is not present on the vzw moto, droid maxx, razr hd, and im sure many others. i tried copying the this file (from nesux 4) and its odex partner to system/framework on my razr hd and i got a soft brick/bootloop at reboot. so the way i see there are a few possiblities why, the file came from 4.2 hd is running 4.1 or n4 is just to different from the hd to use the same file. but this same idea may work from a sprint moto x to a vzw moto x and maybe even the droids.
Awesome, I know that what we are missing is certainly on a sprint x. Google specifically. Lists the sprint and us cellular versions as compatible.

It's a combo. Vz started distributing a secure Sim card, which one had to order through the vz site. I don't see the option in my Verizon, so maybe we already have a secure Sim or maybe it's not yet available. This might take a while to do. More likely we'll have Isis ruining before. yes all vzws new nano sims are nfc secure element sim cards, but this is a new concept, and it is still just a sim card so that leads me to believe that the secure element embedded in the sim is simply software just writen to the sim.
another thing thats confusing is and hardware on the moto x is identical to the droids yet the moto x on sprint supports google wallet. google walet dose not support sim based SE's so therefore one of two things is possible
a) there is a physical SE chip on all moto x's and the carriers have it disabled.
or
b) its pure software and the carriers have it disabled
so unless someone dose a teardown on a sprint moto x and finds an extra piece of hardware im inclined to believe that the "Secure Element" is soft ware that is hidden in the device somewhere. maybe in the kernel so it can manage comunication bettween the ui and the nfc hardware. i really dont know that why before there can be an intelligent discussion of how to/if it can be hacked. what actually needs to happen. we need a HIGHLY detailed decription of what EXACTLY a "Secure Element" is as defind by what google wallet is looking of.
i dont think isis and SE sims will be realivent to google wallet, apples and oranges
The SE spec allows smart card emulation on the firmware and in the uicc on the Sim card by the carrier. The hardware is I denticle. This is possible from that perspective.

To me ...reverting to stock is the simplest way.
If you absolutely don't want to lose your stuff ...you have to return it to stock piece by piece. Many threads about it already. Many.
Tho...I just transferred all my stuff to my pc ....including my titanium backup folder....pics and all that...and used rsdlite ...and put all my stuff back after. Rooted it. Restored my titanium backup. Done.

While I can agree with this partially, if AT&T and Verizon didn't junk up the firmware and change stuff that didn't need to be changed, then we wouldn't really have a legit reason to root the phone. Dev Editions are for people who want exposed modules and all that jazz, and I feel like Moto should've made a MM phone that was Dev Edition, but can't have your cake and eat it too. Again, if AT&T and Verizon used the same firmware as T-Mobile did, then I'm sure a LOT more people, including myself, would be happy and not need root.

I'm happy the USB OTG is back and the phone feels snappier. Battery life (for me) is noticeably better after a significant decline with 4.4. Good that they fixed all the bluetooth volume issues I was having with my headset (basically one volume on the LG Tone+ and when connected to the car, voice notifications came into the phone and not out of the car speakers). Also looks like some notifications have had some tweaks, such as picture auto-backup now shows a thumbnail of some of the images that were backed up. It's a REALLY good update for me.
Only thing that bugs me so far is that when you remove the USB storage, you get a notification that stays there until the next reboot.
I already had great battery life. But it seems to have gotten slightly better. Not marginal, but it was enough for me to notice. Basically getting a bit more out of a 100% charge.
