Are you trying to tether other android devices with each other? Here's a solution that I used here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136266
You have to install an appropriate kernel (I used zKernel) and then download the app in the link. Now I'm tethering all my Android tablets/devices via my X10 without an Ad Hoc trick (i.e. Barnacle)!
I am running the 7.2-RC0 Mirage Kang build from 12/12 (the latest), but my nook can't see the SSID of ad-hoc network (set up using tethering on Droid 1).
When running the 7.1 CM build on the nook, I was able to see and successfully connect to an ad-hoc network. So I am wondering what changed in 7.2-RC0 ? coz I know for a fact that CM supports ad-hoc networks.
Was it the modularized kernel ?

Not sure what the problem might be. Sounds like there may be something different in the wpa_supplicant file. You might want to extract that from the 7.1 build. It is located in system/bin. Rename the one in the 7.2 build wpa_supplicant.bak and place the extracted one in the same folder and reboot. If it doesn't help you can reverse the process. Be sure to change permissions to match the rest of the files.
I currently am using cm9 ics jackpotclavins latest build on my kindle fire. apparently this builds wpa_supplicant file does not support adhoc. I tried everything I could think of replacing wpa_supplicant from cm7 build to cm9 no go tried a few different modifications of wpa_supplicant online did not work, ics build uses wpa supplicant 0.6.10. I even tried a patch online. I love using my tablet at work using the wifi from my smartphone. I cannot do this one ice cream sandwich, but do not want to give that up just because of this feature. Is there a work around that anyone knows of to get adhoc on kindle fire ics?
What kind of phone are you using I have tethered mine with a LG, HTC, and a Samsung, With no problems.
What app are you using to tether with?
Had the same problem. Install "ZT-180 Adhoc Switcher", works OK for me!
I did install zt-180 adhoc switcher and it doesnt do jack just forces close. Im using his latest build with the video fix. I tether with a droidx with the latest 2nd init rom of miui. using wifi tether. My computer can connect to the adhoc network so i know the network is up and running. if you guys have no problems I dont know what else to do any suggestions?
just an update I read online of people having their droidx in infrastructure mode aka softap, not adhoc, I've tried also to get wireless tether in infrastructure but in any version i try it goes to adhoc is intrastructure mode possible with droidx?
you don't need any app for infrastructure mode - that's the mode wifi normally works on every access point
Try Wifi Tether and enable MSS clamping and Routing fix in the settings and see if that works.
Same Problem
I tried this with my ICS Kindle fire and it did not work i also tried ZT 180 Ad Hoc Tethering Switch and it just keeps force closing
so I found the culprit for infrastructure mode any gb based miui rom will not support infrastructure mode. you must use a cyanogen mod 7 or froyo miui, i can confirm a cyanogen mod 7 will enable infrastructure mode for the droidx. right now atm i still use atm as my daily drive and whenever i want to use my kindle fire away from the house and there is any unsecured wifi around I use boot manager to boot into cyanogenmod 7 to enable the infrastructure mode not adhoc
Maybe, i'm on rooted stock (6.2.1) and, as i told, zt-180 works ok for me
Anyone used the above app and has no problem with kindle?

zt-180 adhoc switcher works on the kf
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=zt-180+adhoc&c=apps
By using this apk, it allows kindle to connect to an ad hoc network? Sorry for asking noob question, cause I am trying to connect my phone that only support ad hoc mode.

All of the cm7 ROMs and most of the cm9 ROMs(Jackpot/hashcode's ROM and also NRG's ROM) have ad hoc wifi enabled. C'mon...What are you guys scared of? Rooting is waaaay harder than flashing and that's not saying much. I promise the devs on here make good sh*t. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks although I've got it already. Don't blame me because I've googled it by an hour with no result before asked here.
Now I've problem with launching both ZT 180 and Adhoc enabler.
ZT 180 report "the file which should be modified by the app are not presented at its expected location"..
Ad hoc enabler report "unable to write file system under read/write mode"
I'm using Kindle Fire stock rom 6.2.1, rooted, Busy Box installed.
Any idea for my problem.
allthrough i used it with 6.2.1 i don't know why you don't update to 6.2.2
this should correct any misssing files also
would recommend to use the nfx update for this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1452082
btw. what do you mean with "zt180 and adhoc enabler" ? - you only need zt180 on the kf - it enables adhoc mode

Hey,
I've been trying to get the wifi to work with my ad hoc network after installing the Energy CM9 rom
It's said in the thread that adhoc wifi is supported, but I can't see nor connect to my adhoc network.
I'll try a CM7 rom to test. Meanwhile, any help would be greatly appreciated
Thx
Sorry for the stupid question, but what is the practical use for Kindle with adhoc wi-fi enabled. Internet connection tethering to the other device that has problems connecting directly? I am new in all this and now I have Kindle with ICS CM9 flashed - rom that supports adhoc wi-fi. So now I am just curious, does it do any good and how can I use it.

It's not a question of better or worse network. Wifi networks can typically be configured in either Infrastructure or Adhoc mode.
In infrastructure, the network is centralized around an access point, which is in most cases a router. All the devices connect to this particular access point and all the data exchanged between the devices on this network will go through the access point. For example, if pc A wants to send data to pc B, it's going to be:
pc A ----> Access Point ----> pc B.
In adhoc, there is no central point for the network. The devices communicate directly with each other. For the same example as before, it would be:
pc A ----> pc B
The thing is, I receive internet through a 4G usb adapter plugged into my PC, and I configured my pc to share the internet connection over the wifi. Windows allows to do that quite easily, but my network card (or its driver, or Windows 7... I'm not sure who's at fault here...) only allows me to create an Adhoc network. So here I am, with my 4G usb adapter shared through an adhoc wifi network. It works great: 2 PCs and 2 phones can connect to the Adhoc wifi and receive internet through it without any problem.
However, I can't get my kindle fire to connect to it. I've tried several solutions and adhoc enablers... without success.
@braintrap: Can you give me a link to the rom you used if it works to connect to an adhoc network ?
And to answer your question "does it do any good and how can I use it." No! There is no advantages of using an adhoc network if your current wifi network works well. Just enjoy
Has anyone succeeded to connect to an adhoc with a Kindle Fire ? If yes, what rom was running (stock, CM7, CM9....) ?
Thanks for any help.
Hi...
I've tried with Hashcode's, Energy and AOKP Rom's and none of the see my iPhone's Personal Hotspot.
I'm really looking forward to sharing the iphone's data plan with the Kindle in order to use it for RSS Reading and browsing anywhere!!
Thanks,
Carlos
I use energy cm9 rom from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1528024
No success with adhoc network created on my MacBook but connects easily to the network shared by the Wildfire S...
Energy ROM just updated and sports adhoc network support.

My Defy is running CM7, and the inbuilt gingerbread tethering works with infrastructure mode, but like others I have found using encryption with the gingerbread tethering crashes the connection.
So I've been trying the Wifi tether app, but can't get it to work in infrastructure mode. I know the app supports it, but has a problem with the Defy. Also the latest beta doesn't work on the Defy at all. I have tried copying the custom hostapd file to /system/bin, but no joy.
Does anyone know of a wifi tether app that works on the Defy and supports infrastructure mode? The defy obviously does support infrastructure mode as gingerbread does it.
