With all these new phones with the IR Blasters built in, I'm a bit jealous.
Is there anything for Android like the blinQ (iphone) that allows us to use our Nexus 4's as a TV remote?
Preferably in the same price range as the blinQ ($9.99-$14.99)
I'm not looking for something like Peel or Beacon. I prefer one I can just plug into the 3.5 mm jack and start up the app to run.
Or even better, any DIY options out there that are compatible with the universal remote apps?

Avoid the Zmart remote
The Zmart remote looks great but unfortunately it doesn't work with hardly any devices despite their claims. I purchased one and it does not work with the Nexus 4 or the Nexus one and looking at te app reviews in the play store I can see I am in the majority as there are very few people at all who have ever got it to work. I can't even try and find friends device it works on because you only get 2 devices licences with the zmart remote and you have buy extra to use it on any others. Avoid it at all costs.

Anyone tried it? How well does it work?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Tried the Zmart remote, did not work at all on Nexus 4. I'm really curious as well if anybody had better luck with the irdroid.
Zmart
I have tried the Zmart, it worked on my old nexus 7, never tried on the 2013 version... Never worked on my nexus 4 and never bothered trying it on my nexus 5.
Zmart... just like it doesn't work with every other phone/tablet, it only works with every other devices you wanna use. TV works ok on every other tv and the cable box / digital antena box doesn't work.
Then you can't even teach the control anything, I've tried different controllers for different TVs etc... does not learn...
I am however very curious about the IRdroid, I will have to purchase one and try it.
anything else comes up please let me know, I WANT!

Dude, there's no ir hardware. It's never going to work
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app
I tried zmart on my nexus 6 unrooted and was actually surprised to see it work, on 4 different TVs, had to play around with volumes and signal boosters in the app to get it to work, however, the learn-in feature didn't seem to work.

Can any of the lucky ones who received their nexus try using an otg cable ? Does the phone sense the pendrive or it needs the help of some secondary app such as stickmount, nexus media importer ...
Edit 1: It's not working! External power required though.
Haven't received the nex yet lol
It's not working for anyone at the moment I believe, 4.2 is broken the compability, Chainfire says there's hacks around it but not for a week or two.
Oh ok!

Lots of people have tried; no one has reported success. Take the comment about "hacks around it" with a large grain of salt; there are pretty strong indications, although not quite conclusive yet, I don't think, that the hardware just doesn't support USB host mode (the connector doesn't appear to supply the voltage needed to run a peripheral device).
Maybe if people star it, it'll show Google that people expected/wanted it, and hopefully if it's a software issue, then it'll get fixed faster.

I dont think its a hardware issue. The HTC One X with Sense 4.1 and ICS did not support the OTG cable. After the update to Sense 4+ and JB, One X has started supporting the OTG cable, pendrives upto 32 GB work like a charm. Its most probably a software issue
on the other hand, LG smartphones has never supported usb otg...
at least, none of their optimus line up hasn't yet
the problem may be on LG's fault
anyway, there is already a huge thread about this issue on this forum

Sideload the APK.
Can't find the APK for you tho, no time
It won't work unfortunately. The n7 is missing the internal mic in the headphone jack for it to work as designed. I figure the 3g version should have it for all the calling apps. Hopefully someone will confirm this though?
You can always punch in the numbers manually through square too.

Quite sure you are right neugroove.
I loaded the apk to one of my domains in case you want to have a go, you can grab it from www.kutiekuts.co.uk/squareup.apk

I confirmed Nexus 7 3G (Model: ME370TG) with Square Register. Square application is available on Play Store, now.
And the app recognized Square Reader, but failed to read my main credit card (VISA).
Unfortunately both Nexus 7 is not supported due to some phone jack problems maybe.
So I have my nice new GN2 and my nice couple month old Nexus 7 both sporting awesome NFC tech, but what to do with it? My first though was pairing them via bt and using the lte from my Note 2 over my college's sad excuse for a wifi system to power my N7 during the day. Then I though maybe auto establishing a tablettalk connection as well. Does anyone know of a way to program the two devices to automatically connect in such a way?

I know it is possible. I was talking to someone who uses Tasker and an NFC tag to automatically tether his N7 to his phone, but I've never studied the recipe.
I'm not sure why the tag, but maybe so he doesn't have to remove the phone from his belt... it's attached to his holster case. He said he has another one attached to his car seatbelt clasp to set the phone into his driving mode.
Wish I could give you more details.
Yeah that's essentially what I want to accomplish, but I'm not crazy about sticking one of those tags to my device. I was just hoping there was a way (with or without root) to make it read the NFC connection as a tag and start the connection.

I suspect that you would be able to, since NFC handles touch and go and touch and connect. I think the problem for some people would be in how strong the NFC connection is on their phone (some of them are weak) and how close together you need to get the two unitsto trigger it, especially if they are both in thick cases.
Putting them back to back could be as much work as just creating a widget to trigger a Tasker recipe that would do the same thing.
I've been thinking about doing this, too, but haven't, so I might start playing with Tasker to see whether I can set it up.
I'm going to do the same. Let me know if you discover anything

So I got an email about the new Roku 3. Says to support Miracast.
I'm going to buy the unit as soon as Walmart carries it. (Most likely to use it for a while and return it since I have a wdtv)
Anyone have plans to buy one? Anyone have one yet? Can't wait for something with real Miracast support so we can use it with out Nexus 4's.

Yeah not bad for $99.
I hope you will let us know if you are able to use miracast on it with your phone.
So does it support miracast out of the box? I thought I read it would be a firmware update at a later time.

Re: Roku 3 supports Miracast
Roku didn’t want to comment about Miracast at the time and didn’t mention the technology in its Roku 3 press material. However, both the Streaming Stick and the new Roku 3 support Wi-Fi Direct, a technology Miracast is based on, so we shouldn’t be too surprised to see both get a Miracast update some time in the near future.

Have you gotten it yet and tried it out?
Miracast
My Roku 3 shows up on the network with a wifi direct id. If I try to connect to it, it prompts for a password. I can not find any setting for this and have no idea what the password is. Doe anyone know what software will be needed on the PC to spport Miracast? I have a Atheros wifi adapter with Miracast support in my laptop.
Hey guys, the roku broadcasts a SSID but it looks like it's used for wifi direct to pair with the remote. I can't seem to find any settings relating to miracast and the unit won't show up when I scan for displays on my Nexus.

I found a neat trick to connect, I noticed the SSID it broadcasts says (WPS available). So I figured they are using WPS to link the remote to the roku. So if you go on the roku, start up remote pairing, and click the WPS button on your phone, it connects.
However no wireless displays show up in the phone settings and I have yet to find a benefit to connecting directly.
Still no Miracast support. Sigh.

Sadly I think this is a classic case of false advertising. I've just finished reading a bunch of pre release press materials and even a video claiming the roku3 was doing mirroring from the PC.... looks like it's all lies.

Is there a similar one for Nexus 7?
I bought my Nexus 7 when it just came out, and I don't want to spend more just to get the 3G version...
I have seen anything like that.
Get a 3g USB dongle and otg cable, it should work. There are couple of threads about this already, have a look around.
The only way I can imagine such a case is such dongle, just packed into mass of silicone to fit the n7, and that I have never seen, even market for that isn't big enough to be worth developing.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Or perhaps a portable hotspot? I'd love if yourkarma.com was available in my area, unfortunately it's not.
Just like the microsd but with 3g. But a hotspot should be better, easier and more battery friendly
