Videos on sd card - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

Hi, how to force scan videos on the sd card to see them on the stock video player ???
Sent from my GT-N8010 using XDA Premium HD app

when use use an app for the first time it will ask you what to use to open the file. i use quickpic to scroll through videos and then when you click to view it asks what you want to view the video. click 'Video Player' and then click 'always' and that will be the default. if you already set a default you can change it by going to settings-->application manager then click the software you use to view the files and then click 'clear defaults'.

if it has not scanned when you pull the usb cable you can force it to scan by unmounting from settings then take it out and put it back in. this forces a scan.

[q] about the stock music player

Anyone know how to change settings so library only adds files from a certain folder? I have hawx installed which has 500 audio files and the music player has them all listed which is really annoying having to scroll through.

In any folder you do not want scanned by the media scanner for music and video, place a blank file named ".nomedia"
ah ok thanks. Blank file meaning even a document file or something specific?

Glad this was asked. I was curious about the same thing. After installing some games, the music player includes some of the sfx in the playlists. Very annoying. I will try this fix as well.
Thanks for the post.

This works for all nested folders as well. And if you are rooted, you should also check out Rescan Media Root to rescan the sd card on demand. You can disable the startup rescan if you wish and use this as needed. I haven't yet disabled rescan on startup. It doesn't take too long. But if I add the .nomedia to a folder, it's faster to run this app, rather than connecting to a computer, mounting the sdcard and disconnecting to kick off the rescan.

Gallery issues

For the life of me I can't get the gallery to refresh after I add pictures to my pictures folder. Am I missing something or is this yet another bug?

Took me 2 days to get some imported cam pics to show up.
Try killing the gallery in the task manager. Also try rebooting.
Android gallery has always been crap if not for picasa integration it would be totally useless. Try quick pic. Ugly but very functional.
Thanks..... I tried killing with task manager but no go.
Maybe I should just use Picasso... good lord.
I tried 3d gallery and it wont display correctly at all. Ill check out that apple you mentioned.

Quick pick will work great for me. Thanks again.
Is there any app to view JUST Picasso pics that you know of?
*edit* Picasso tool works, but osmotic made for tab.. either way better than the pic delay of the stock gallery.

Did you copy it from pc to tablet or form different location on your tablet to gallery folder?
If the second option don't use any file managers from the market. Instead use file manager that is included in touchwiz.
Don't know why but all other file managers don't move cache when moving photos.

I did not use the stock file explorer, I used file explorer HD and in this case copied from SD card to the pictures folder.
Ya know, I like the idea of using qucik pic and picassa tool. I can upload to picassa from quick pic and when viewing I can use picassa tool, gallery, web , etc...
With quick pic I can easily hide or remove folders so I don't have this cluster of unwanted pics
I just demo ed the gallery from my media folder all together.
Kind of lame but it is what it is. ...

Use stock explorer and you will notice that there is no problem with photos. Don't know why but I didn't have this problem on transformer.. Weird

Android uses an internal database to remember multi-media files (pics, music and video) so that built-in apps like Gallery, Music and Video players can show them regardless which folder they are located. If you copied any such type of files to the tab using 3rd party tools that does not trigger media scanning, those files will never show up in these apps until next time media scanning runs.
On my Samsung Galaxy S phone, such media scanning is done everytime you power up the phone or disconnect the USB connection in mass storage mode. It is a slow and painful process on the phone.
On my GT 10.1, this process has been some what improved mainly because there is no USB mass storage mode. The default MTP mode will automatically update the database when file transfer occurs. The built-in File Explore can also properly update the database. But if you use 3rd party tool, chances are they will never trigger a media scanning process.
It doesn't matter which folder you copied your pictures into.

Don't want to sound like I'm shooting the messenger here... But... that sucks.
Really, I already have too many options to "open with". The last thing I want to do is remember to use the original file explorer to deal with pictures.
I'm really started to be reminded of a certain apple product... you need an app for that.
If someone just streamlined all the apps to work as one they'd have my money.
In any event thanks for your reply....
Media scanning is part of Android OS design. This is poorly designed and poorly implemented, IMO. On my phone, everytime I power up the phone, it renders my phone unresponsive for a minute or two (depending on how many files and whether or not I have an external SD card). The scanning process needs to scan the entire file system to make sure every media file is indexed in the database.
FWIW I worked around this issue with one of the random market apps for SD updating. There's a number that work, basically it just initiates a refresh manually. Alternately you can plug it into your PC with USB and then unplug it.
Got the name of any of those apps?
I realized you can't change the lock screen from anything but the stock gallery.....

SDRescan, one of the oldest, still usefull apps in the market.
Rescan Media, pretty much the same app with a nicer icon and an auto quit option.

[Q]: Can't find downloaded files anywhere

Hi all. Whenever I download a picture or a file, I can view it in from the downloads app, but it does not show up in the gallery, at all. Also I have a music app that allows me to save songs on the phone, and it saves them, but they can not be found anywhere, not on phone storage, not on SD. This all started after I installed an external Sd card. What can be the reason?

use a media scan app
And as for your music files, try using PowerAmp, it's a great music player that finds your music by scanning your entire device.

And the best thing with it is that you can set it to scan just the folder you put your music in, so you don't have to listen to ringtones when playing random playlists
Poweramp is the #1 player for me!

How to keep non-standard ringtone?

I fancy a custom ringtone on my phone (see sig for details), but after every update I have to set it again, because otherwise it stays on 'unknown ringtone'; same goes for notifications.
I tried to use files on internal and on external sdcard, made me a flashable zipfile, too, that pushes the files to the correct folders in /system /media/audio/ - but no luck, the setting won't survive a system upgrade through OpenDelta
Any hints how to make it stick? I'd appreciate a lot
Do you have a "Ringtones" folder on your SD card? If you put it there it should be automatically indexed and stick after an OpenDelta update
I do, but it won't stick :-$
Put it on sd/media/audio/ringtones and it will stick.

Thanks for this, it worked however all the ringtones now show up in my music player. Adding a .nomedia file negated them showing up at all as ringtones.
Any way to have them visible to ringtones but hidden from music? Or can I not have it both ways?
Thanks in advance.

Use a music player with the ability to hide files/folders
How come apps like Facebook and any.Do have notifications in that folder that are not visible to my music player without the use of a .nomedia file?
Any way to mimic those?

Check their properties in a file explorer, you can hide them there (why didn't I think of this in my post above??)

I don't think I can change sd card content permissions, unless I'm missing something. I'm using es file manager.

Long press the file or folder you want to hide, select properties and enable hidden. On SD you have all permissions by default.

Listening to Music on HTC Ultra!

Simple I know!
I have all my music stored on a micro SD card. This used to play fine on my old HTC M8.
However, now I cannlt seem to find an app or similar to enable me to get to my music on the SD card. I like to be independant of 'The Cloud' or third party storage. Consequently, can anybody help me out whereby I can just listen to MY music?
Take it simple, 'cause you may lose me!!!
Use google play music, it is in the all application list.

Thanks, but it doesn't pick up my music from the SD card. Hence why I'm asking.
Hııım, weird. On the left menu settings- click on music library and all songs appears in the list. Mine shows all the mp3s. Maybe you need to reformat sd card

Ah, now that may be something. Checked some of the extensions on music files and they are showing .wma, not .mp3. Does that mean I have to edit all my files so they read as .mp3 or is there a magic way of updating them all?
