Good news and bad news
Good news: Just been into Carphone Warehouse. And discovered Talk Mobile do a tariff. 12 month, £30/month, 400 mins, texts and Unlimited data with no fair usage limit. Handset £179. That in my eyes is a cracking deal.
Bad news: Handset looks nice, but has the ergonomics of a shoe box. Does not feel nice in the hand at all. Compared to my HD2. I maybe use to how my fone feels, but the edges just felt too square.
Also i tested both phones on moneysavingexpert.com homepage. The colours were perfect on the SG2. HD2 colours looked washed out. But I was testing clarity of the small letters. Both were identical. Iphone 4 is the yardstick for this and it fails.
So im passing on this and waiting for the HTC Sensation. The look and feel is paramount, u cant touch memory, so shouldnt miss it too much.
SG2= ergonomic fail.
I want to view pages without having to zoom all the time and read pdfs. Nice phone but no cigar, this time
Sorry.

to each its own. I couldnt stand my hd2 after having my galaxy s for a year. But it comes down to persoal preference. Im pretty sure theres some happy people enjoying there devices.
I agree. Nothing wrong with the phone, I just have a specific requirement to be able to use service manual pdf's on the move so i dont have to dig out the laptop.
Dont wanna troll. Just thought people who havent handled one yet maybe interested.

Having just upgraded from a HD2 yesterday I don't agree at all - the Galaxy S II feels a lot nicer in the hand. However, thanks to it's plastic construction, there is no doubt it feels less sturdy than HTC's offering. I get the impression that, despite the Gorilla Glass, one drop of this thing onto a hard surface would lead to a world of hurt. I'm not saying that is definitely the case but it feels that way.
I have a FlexiShield skin on order and I will feel a lot more comfortable once my phone is in it. I bought one for my HD2 18 months ago when I first got it and it saved it from at least a couple of drops. Superb cover.
On a side note, is anyone going to bother with a screen protector? I have never had a Gorilla Glass phone before so don't know the likelihood of it scratching. I much prefer touch-screen phones with no protector but for obvious reasons it's not a good idea.
lots of people aren't bothering with ascreen protector. they bring a good point that... anything that can scratch the gorilla glass will probably pass through any screen protector anyway. having said that... i'm getting one. i have one for my GS as well.
as for the GS II i just may not put it on yet
I like the shape of the sgs 2, very thin and light makes it ideal shape.
Yeah, we really needed to know this. Nobody is forcing you to buy anyone phone so if you don't like this one there is no need to run home, jump on the interwebz and make a thread on the forum about it.
I hope you like which ever phone you do get.

Dropped my SGS multiple times on hard flooring, concrete and Asphalt and despite thinking one drop and it was a goner the thing doesn't have a scratch on the screen, body still looks new and works perfectly. I wonder if the SGS II is the same way but I will not be dropping it anytime soon to find out.
I love my Galaxy SII but it seems that you might be better off with a 7in tablet such as the Galaxy Tab or maybe a bigger tablet such as the Advent Vega or iPad.
I personally couldn't read PDFs on a screen smaller than 7in for very long.
This is good info for me. Nexus One owner and I sported an HD2 for a few weeks and loved the feel and size, knowing it had the dimensions of my next phone (G2x was a failure for me).

OP must have small hands, and you know what they say!
Small hands...........
Small gloves...
yeh I know what your on about I went from iPhone 4 to gs2 and text is so hard to read with no reflow option, but I gain so much more with customization, and the weight is great, the iPhone feels like such a brick now.
in saying that I had a hd2 and really missed it after I got the iPhone, thought I could get that feeling back with the sgs2 but it's not the same hd2 is a quality product.
enjoy your sensation and thanks for being honest in the lions den lol
i do agree with the [OP] regarding the "ergonomic fail" thing.
..and this is coming from a Samsung phone fanatic like me
personally, i don't like at all the shell design of the SGS2, i'll definitely not use the SGS2 naked, it looks simply disgusting... seriously, for the lack of a better word to describe its design.
unfortunately i love all the technology packed inside that "disgusting" shell so is either take it or leave it, and i choose to take it
so the ergonomic fail became a non issue for me, as i'll be replacing the case, and using with a protection case, and other accessories i always slap onto all of my phones; i praise the after market accessories people to make the impossible possible

Disgusting? Seriously? Dear me, it takes all sorts I guess and the world would be a boring place if we all had the same opinions.
IMO: I like very much the design, I can hold it in one hand and even type with one hand, it holds perfectly in my right hand... Even ergonomically I like it. It's simply perfect for me.
It's up to you to choose another phone. I would never choose another now. Especially HTC sensation which have many things less than Galaxy S2.
+10 I find the design very nice unlike some here
And I would never change it for nothing on the market that's just a piece of beauty, a very thin piece actually
What I don't understand is the point of this topic ? If you feel it not as you want anyone else could feel it in the hand differently like me. And many peeps have already said they like the feel in the hand in this thread so your opinion can't be taken for facts until someone interested in it hold it for real :/ anyway...
Pitching in on the ergonomics of the device being awesome, for me anyway. If you have really small hands then this will probably be a pretty bad phone for you, since it wont fit comfortably into a normal grip. That aside, for people with average or large hands, this design works very well. You can keep a very firm grip on it easily, and one handed operation works too, all while having a 4.3" screen.
Not sure about the people saying it feels cheap or anything, unless you correlate cheap with light - because it's very light. If this is the case, you can buy a nice big heavy cover for the device to make it feel heavier and sturdier - but that seems really stupid to me. A phone is meant to be mobile, the lighter the better.
Phones won't be perfect until they're razor thin, bendable, and weight as much as paper! And the SGS2 is firmly on the right track.
To me I'm loving everything about the phone, ergonomics included. I don't have huge hands but find the phone very easy to hold and use for one handed operation.
As for a screen protector I will say a big NO. I work for a Verizon retailer and we have a demo line hooked up to their version of the first galaxy s, the fascinate, that also has gorilla glass. Being inquisitive and it being a demo line, I decided to test the durability of gorilla glass. Grabbed a phillips head screw driver and preceded to try and scratch the screen. Repeatedly I scraped it, scratched back and forth quickly, and somewhat violently tried to stab it. Wiped off the screen with a micro-fiber cloth and not one scratch or mark on it, gorilla glass is really some remarkable stuff.
I'm not saying its impossible to damage it, but it will take some serious effort. Since most of you guys probably take care of your phones anyway, with gorilla glass your screen will be fine. A screen protector on gorilla glass just seems redundant .
Problem is... the old galaxy didn't have an oleophobic coating. You try taking a screwdriver to that and the coating WILL come off. The screen will be resilient, but not the coating, sorry.

At the end of the day, apart from it going dark. I entered the store but left
The HD2 is such a class act to follow, it's replacement has a to be nearly as iconic.
And only then will I splash the cash.

Personally I'm very impressed with the build quality, even though it's all plastic, its all put together very well. All the seams line up PERFECTLY, there are no rough edges and no flexing. It looks and feels great.
For me the build quality is good. It does not feel very platic to me.
And I am very demanding on my phones, as you can see in other topics, I notice every little problem there is.
Yhe phone feels very sollid, everything is well pushed together, so no "air" between things... no looseness. It feels like one piece. Also no sounds if you push anywhere, no cracking.
I am very happy abouth the build quality, as I tought it would bother me.

I agree completely.
Super impressed. MUCH better than other plastic phones like the atrix.
As more people here, I am really a phone freak. First thing I look in the first few days is how well the phone is build. I look for everything that wouldnt be good about the build quality.
Well, it is thin like hell, its light... But, it feels well built. The back cover is scary thin when taken off, but it snaps on perfectly (in 10 places). No cracks, funny noises or stuff. Its built nicely.
The only thing is I treat it very carefully when not in my case. That off course also shows it feels high quality, thats why I dont want to break it.
Maybe a very little build quality problem, altough it is not really a problem.
But between the glass of the screen and the surrounding plastic there is a smalish gap where dirt or dust gets in(not under the screen tough(for now)). Since i have my phone i cleaned it with the edges of a piece of paper.

Dropped my phone three times from table height tonight. One not my failure and two falling out of top pocket picking up table football ball. All good except my pride and tiniest ding on the surround. :-/ not looking forward too hangover

Build quality is cheap compared to a lot of phones out there... and I just cracked the glass last night when I had my SGSII in my back pocket and was leaning against a stool at the bar in my fav night club last night... Pretty poor really for a $750+ phone.

Consider it like this:-
Physically Samsung’s wafer-thin chassis is great in the pocket whereas its competitor HTC Sensation feels better in the hand. Tapering edges, a neatly curved display and high-quality metal and soft-touch plastic make for a device that feels more expensive than the Galaxy S II can manage.
It's a trade-off to give Samsung the edge in lightness and thinness. I have no problem with the thin plastic. I'm super careful with all my devices because I can resell them easier lol.
The phone's solid, but I treat it as if its fragile for some reason. Because its so light and thin, it always feels like it could fall out of my hand. Cases are starting to come out and I ordered a Case-Mate tough case. I know I'll be less paranoid about it once its protected.
And to the Aussie who cracked his screen... I've dropped other phones that have landed in ways that should have cracked their screens but for some reason they survived. I've done the same thing you did with an HD2 (which is also thin) by hitting it against something in a way a pressure point cracked the screen diagonally. No phone can protect you against every instance of screen breakage. I think thinner phones are more susceptible to pressure point cracks.

You also need to factor in that because the sensation uses metal for its casing, its also a lot heavier. This may or may not be what your looking for.
It really depends on the individual. In amazed on the good reviews here but honestly when I first opened the box my heart sank.
Coming from the hd2 and iphone 4. This felt like some cheap toy for my tenants sister to play with rather than cutting edge executive phone. Its plasticky but like all the comments above, it probably was designed this way to make it light.
Not my cup if tea but of the trade off.I've learned to live with it
While your average "drop test" video isn't necessarily a source for scientific durability analysis, they can be entertaining to watch. Somehow, seeing expensive devices mercilessly dropped onto unforgiving concrete or pavement feels slightly gratifying, while the process simultaneously educates viewers on the dangers of careless phone handling.
Today, Android Authority uploaded a drop test video which saw Samsung's Galaxy SIII (by all accounts the phone of the moment) and Apple's iPhone 4S faced off against an expanse of hard concrete. Both phones were dropped on their face, back, and side, of course in an attempt to gather more experimental data.
It goes without saying that neither device fared particularly well. The iPhone 4S' front and back panels were absolutely smashed, though the touch screen, home, and lock buttons still functioned. The Galaxy SIII, while less noticeably damaged, had no touch functionality at all after being dropped on its face.
In the end, the lesson is the same: don't drop your phone (even if it has gorilla glass), because the consequences could be dire.
here is the drop test of SAMSUNG GALAXY 2 sgs2 is stronger than galaxy s3
here is water test
and check the htc one x screen power
Unfortunately during the side drop test the thing hit the corner dead on. Does not matter which phone you have, you hit the corner like that on the modern big screen smartphones, and it will shatter the display. Large force, small area impact. Does not matter which phone it is, it will shatter. Be it nail hammer One X, or SGS3.
Rule No 1 : Dont drop the phone.
Rule No 2 : Before you read rule number 1, get the case that protects the corners.
These plastic built samsung phones will survive most of the things which other phones which are better built wont, but corner impact is kryptonite of all phones.

one thing you should never do with OLED screen = water soak
I dropped ms SGS1 hundred of times. Never had a scratch on the screen, the SGS3 however seems very fragile. I never used a case but i think i will buy one for this phone.
water test wow that's amazing I'm going try that too impress my mates!!
My wife's Skyrocket got a small crack in the screen from a corner drop. The crack just cuts through a corner where there is no viewable screen. The HOX hammering nails was pretty rich though.
i can explain why the galaxy s3 does crap its cos the screen curves outwards
simples also buy a screen protector doesnt cost much but saves you buying a new phone

Correct. Not sure why Samsung would change that. It's on iPhone level as far as durability goes, and that's sad. (About 75% of the people I know that have iPhones have cracked screens.)
One thing i noticed on that video is that the surface where it dropped wasnt flat but very irregular which increases the chance of a disaster like that by alooot.
Ive also seen a One X dropping on a flat surface and the same happened, in the end it doesnt matter what u have, the phones will always get damaged if you are not lucky/carefull/responsible enough

any phone's screen will crack. It depends on WHERE the impact on the phone is where it lands, and how far the drop is from

I've never understood these tests. Your goal is obviously to never drop, or get the phone in water. If you do so you have to deal with the outcome. What's the point of a test?
Hey guys,
2 weeks ago I bought a brand new galaxy note 2, but by now I already have some scratches on the back cover and some on the steel cornering? So is it just misusage or is it that Samsung have easily scratched covers? And I only dropped the phone like once so I don't think that all of these scratches came from misusage... Any ideas?
I had a sgs2 before and it got totally destructed by scratches and tearings...
Are you carrying diamond tipped nails in your pocket?
I have had my note 1 for 9 months and have dropped it a couple of times on concrete and ceramic tiled floors and it still looks 99% brand new. I don't usually put anything else with it in my pockets but it has come in contact with keys on several occasions.
Do you live in a sandy area? How do you carry it normally on your person?
Now that you mention it, I have a nasty scratch on my back cover too.
Never had a problem with my Note 1. I wonder if it is the glossy coating.
I'm using a case now though - much nicer to hold with a textured back.

I really wish Samsung wouldve put a rubberized backing on the note II considering it'd have less of a chance to slip out of your hands which is pretty high considering how big this phone is...

In your case, I'd suggest you check out Otterbox cases when they become available for the Note 2.
Well I think if samsung uses steel or aluminum cases like nokia our phone would feel and look better and will still remain in excellent condition even after couple of drops.. But unfortunately samsung uses glossy plastic which might not break as easily but will definitly not remain a "new phone" definition after a month or two...

What are you the samsung police?
Give it a rest officer, if the gn2 has a back thats like the gs3 then yes its flimsy. samsung is notorious for cutting corners likr this to save money.
But with that said its usualy to provide better quality in other aspects.
If your tired of reading opinions you dont agree with why are you reading them?

And display don't have it any more that background black spots. (which is available on any amoled screens)
Very happy.
People complain about plastic being a poor build quality choice. It's just a matter of opinion. I don't feel that it has to be metal/aluminum/whatever to be nice build quality. If anything, I feel plastic is more durable, lighter, and we get awesome internals. People don't complain about the mass amount of plastic BMW uses everywhere in their cars, but people also don't know enough to realize it.

Exactly. People also don't know that the cover of a lot of phones are also actually plastic, just with a different coating to make it feel "premium". I could care less if its plastic and flimsy, there's a reason for it being that way. Its more durable.

I have a Note 2. I tried a Note 4 and took it back. Even though it was just a little bit larger...it felt way larger in my pocket. I think it may be because of the corners are less rounded. It seemed to hang out of my pocket rather than sink in like the Note 2 did.
Problem is, I really liked the Note 4. Anyone know why it is only just a tad bit bigger than the Note 2 but yet fits so awkwardly in the front pants pocket? Any suggestions? Would a case change the shape of it so it would rest better in the pocket...or would it just make it more bulky?

Adding case to Note 4 will definitely add bulk.
Here is my suggestion: Get the Note 4 and get used to it. You won't regret it.
Get note edge. ...even better
get a belt case, from pdair.com for example.
you'll never have to worry about pocket space, or sand in your pockets again.
an otterbox defender will work quite well too, with its belt clip.

I also came from Note 2 to Note 4, I have no complaints on handling, for me it feels even better, even using it with a wallet case I have no issues at all, this phone rocks, cheers:fingers-crossed:

A case adds some milimeter to it, even if it's just plastic.
Let alone weight, if you use the Neo Hybrid for example.
But to be honest, I would just use a belt case if I were you.
These phones (LG G Pro 2, Note 4, heck even the Note 2) make walking a bit uncomfortable.
It feels much better not to have that extra brick in your pocket.
(Even a slim old Nokia feels worse than having nothing in your pants... unless you use Cargo Pants.
Which is functionally awesome, but frowned upon. Pick your poison.)
Please don't do what the dice master suggested you will look like a spy who plays fruit machines.
Adding a case won't help. Just get used to it. It is bigger, but a great phone.
