My HTC one is due very soon & I am looking for tips and best practice when setting it up for the first time.
For example :
How long should I charge the battery for before first use ?
When transferring data from my old phone to the HTC is it simple to tfr contacts / messages etc accross.
Looking forward to your tips and tricks
Thanks in advance
You should be able to use the phone right out of the box. Most lithium-ion/polymer batteries ship at around 40% charge. These batteries don't suffer from the "memory effect," so you no longer need to practice full-charge and full-drain cycles, as with nickel-based batteries. You should not be completely draining lithium batteries either, as it will reduce your battery life in the long run.
Delete whatsapp, kik or wechat.
The time remaining depends upon how you had used your phone that far. If you keep using your phone excessively that time remaining changes accordingly. It is a forecast. Forecasts change. It isn't a battery meter reader. Only thing you can trust is battery percentage remaining, not time.

It does say before use the battery should be fully charged so i will give it a charge until the green light comes on.

I've purchased a second hand xda2, and found (not entirely to my suprise) that the battery life wasn't great - typically less than a day even if it had sit in the charging cradle the previous night.
So i went to o2 shop yesterday lunch time and purchased a new battery. They charged it for me on a rapid charger - took 30 minutes. However by the time I got home at 8.30pm the XDA2 was reporting very low battery - this is the new one - So I put that down to the rapid charger and I fully charged that one over night last night and took it out of the cradle at about 8 this morning.
It's already reporting 57% percent battery.
Now ok, i'm aware I've been using BT a lot to sort my active sync this morning etc, but surely battery life should be better than this? I used to have an IPAQ and that needed recalibrating because it was incorrect at guessing how quickly the battery would drain. Does this happen with the XDAs? if so how can I recalibrate or is something else likely to be draining the batt?
Thanks
Anthony
well the manual say you have to charge it for 24hours or so the first time
i would try to do that
also look if it's the normal batt or backup batt which is complaining
otherwise the batt life should inc the more times you charge it

Ok i'll try leaving it in the cradle over the weekend and switch back to my normal phone - backup battery is 100%. My old battery is in the aux battery holder in the cradle and has been since 1.30 this morning so maybe tommorow i'll give that one a whirl again!
Thanks
Try it with bluetooth switched off for a day and see if you get a different result. The other possibility is if you're in a low coverage area and your phone is constantly polling for network availability - is this likely to be the case?
If none of these apply, are you running any other peripherals, e.g. SD Wireless card? Just trying to whittle down the possibilities before blaming the hardware.
rgds,
Alex.

Make sure that you don't have the Blackberry Software running unless yoou're using Blackberry ! (Check the taskbar for an envelope icon). If you do run it, and you're not connected / subscribed to a Blackberry service then you'll get less than 12 hours on your battery.

ok guys as advised by someone i fully drain my vodafone magic till it dies and then charge it to a 100%.
last night i did the same just before goin to sleep, when i woke up in the morning the battery was at 76% after about 8 hours.I just had 1 missed call,1 sms,1 tweet and 1 email.
How can the battery drain so fast for no work at all???
pls help......
Do you have alot of widgets running? What do you have switched on, Bluetooth,GPS,WiFi? How often do you have the "Data Synch" set for? All of these drain the battery, if they are all working at the same time it goes pretty quick.
Clinton
Woa! For the battery to drain overnight to 76% is crazy. never had this problem with my magic. It actually last very long.
But 76% overnight most likely means your battery is faulty and or you are leaving gps, wifi, and have quite a few things running on the phone like ClintonH stated.
however if you have everything off, as well as the brightness set low. Then contact Vodafone and let them know your issue. they should replace your battery at a free cost.
I suggest people use their battery for a week or 2 to see better results with their battery life. I started having poor battery life with my magic but now I can last about 2 day before I recharge it again.
As other user mentioned, it also depend what you have on or running in the background when your phone is on standby. I suggest you use task manager applications to kill unnecessary applications that might be running.
thanks guys
nope i have gps bluetooth and wifi turned off
i turned the background data off from settings
will try gettin task manager and see if it makes a diff!
thanks once again

Yes, are you by any chance downloading apps? Sometimes they hang and the download stops / continues lots of times. And when they complete your trackball flashes white.

I read a quite interesting post in the vodafone forum.
A user complained about the battery life of his HTC Magic. Check the answer from Wayne_Vodafone:
The HTC Magic employs a battery that requires overcharging and topup charging. You must charge it as much and as often as possible. The more you charge the better the battery life becomes. So after a few charges you should see the benefit of this. Letting the charge drain out undoes this so try and charge as often as possible

It actually seems to work. At least for me, try it for yourself.
I have to charge my HT-03A every night if I do not want it to die the next day. I am assuming that is why HTC gives you two batteries, because the battery goes so fast. As long as you are able to carry that second battery around with you, and be able to charge it every night, I don't really see a problem. But for it to go from 100% to 76% overnight means you are running programs that you do not need to. I will add that I have Wi-Fi continuously on, and my Contacts and Calendar are continuously synchronized. With barely any use I am usually at around 50% by the end of the day.

Pretty interesting, and that was an official vodafone response? Why wouldn't HTC say that in the first place? Will give it a go anyway...
Yeah, was a official Vodafone Response.
For me: I've loaded mine over night this morning, now its 19:26 and it's still over 85%. I used it for some SMS, receive a MMS and some WLAN.

You never want to drain a Lithium-Ion battery. NiCd batteries have memory, in which it's better to drain them. But not Li-Ion. They will die quicker if you do

That could be right.
Depends on what's running.
Where are you checking for 100%?
If you are charging until the green light comes on - that's 90%. The phone takes longer to charge passed 90% than it does to charge up to 90%.
I charged to 99%, and drove around with the GPS on for a few hours (about 2) and came back at about 75%.
However some days, when I charge my phone over night (true 100%), I can listen to music on my way to work (40 mins) on my phone, play with it a bit at work, and 3 hours later it will say 94%.
So, the battery is very touchy it seems...
Try turning off 3G (It's still pretty fast on 2G, try it for a day)
And also make sure GPS is off. Keep your brightness no more than 30%, and make sure WiFi is off. Make sure you don't have any widgets that connect online either.
You should get good standby time
Use apndroid to save battery life
Download apndroid from the Market. Use it to turn off the cellular internet before you go to bed and whenever else you want to save battery life.
There's also an app called Spare Parts in the Market that could help you. As well as giving information about your battery status and battery health, you can also see stastics of your application usage and battery history. A very useful app!
Plus it also enables other features like enabling fancy animations for the keyboard and screen rotation.

Hi!
I am going to buy a Huawei U8800 soon but I am wondering about the battery time, how good is it?
Could you please post a report over your usage and how long the battery held.
Thanks!
// Sebgus
Pretty standard for smartphone.
With heavy use - from charger at morning, to charger at evening. With easier use battery will last for 36-48 hours.
And then I guess you use apps like facebook & twitter that updates all the time?
EDIT: On the homescreen I meant
I may have a faulty unit, but my battery time on my X5 is bad, almost to the point where I want to sell it.With a full charge,GPS,Bluetooth and WiFi turned off and minimal usage throughout the day I'm at 10% by 8pm.
power121212:
That doesn't sound that good! But it seems like the quality on the batteries shipped with the U8800 shift very much? Some get a decent 2 days with normal usage and some are fully charged in the morning and then almost empty at the evening.
Shouldn't warranty cover that?
I would like more reports please, want to figure out how good quality they have. Maybe can do a template:
Date on purchase:
Batterytime w normal usage:
Activities, normal usage (what did you do):
Batterytime w heavy usage:
Activities, heavy usage:
Thanks!
I'd just like to point out that you CANNOT rely on the battery meter to give you an accurate reading for the battery capacity. If your phone drops a few % very quickly then you need to remove batterystats.bin and power cycle the device a few times. Initially when I got mine it went 'flat' quite fast telling me to plug in but when it hit 0% it then shot back up to 30%, since the remaining capacity would have been recalculated.
The battery life is good. It is a large battery for this size of device (1500mAh) the HTC Vision has a 1300mAh (more or less the same hardware). Just be smart about how you use it, don't keep over 9000 widgets on you home screens terminate apps completely, don't leave wifi/gps/3g on unneccessarily (it only takes a few seconds to reenable them in settings)
I agree to Poulsen8r .too much running appz on your phone may cause the battery empty fast.I suggest to monitor all those running appz and turn it off if unneeded.

Agree. And it greatly depends on your location as well, I mean your battery would definitely last longer if u're sitting besides a strong cell tower all day without finding, detecting and re-connecting cell towers.

Make sure your phone is fully charged and plugged into pc then:
start terminal/cmd
adb shell
rm /data/system/batterystats.bin
reboot
Unplug your phone and let it discharge WITHOUT TOUCHING IT as long as possible ideally until its empty. Then charge FULLY and discharge again. Then it should be fairly accurate and consistent (no sudden drops pf 10% in 10mins).
theres an app here in xda that helps to do battery calibration:

The safest thing to do is to NOT do that. Running your battery completely dead is worse on your battery, just charge it from 5 or 10%.
Lithium-Ion batteries should never cycle all the way down. In fact, with Lithium-Ion batteries, the higher the charge left the more charge cycles you will have with the battery. Nickle-Cadium batteries (Ni-Cad) are the ones from the 80's and 90's that developed a memory and cycle was NEEDED with them. There is ZERO memory effects with Lithium-Ion batteries.
For example... if you charge the phone regularly when its at 25% battery left or lower you will get roughly 250-350 charge cycles. 50% battery left and you will get 1000-1200 charges cycles and if you charge it at 75% or more you can get roughly 2000-2200 charge cycles. And obviously a charge cycle is when you charge it to full so if you charge it once a day then that is 1 charge cycle.
My battery rarely goes below 50% battery with 4-5 hours of screen on time and that's after a full day (8am-midnight) and i plug it in each night.

Well, a lot of things go into battery life. Surfing the web since it uses data and when on 4g or LTE data you will use a lot of battery. That said, things I do for best battery are these...
Any app you don't want or need running background data i would restrict the background data under settings-data usage then tap what is using data and you can tap restrict background data. Turn off all your syncs (use manual sync) unless you have to have them like email maybe and dont let it sync every 15 min maybe change it to once an hour or every 4 hours. I would use your internet for about an hour of surfing and see what you get after that. I probably lose about 10% battery per 45 min or so of constant web surfing on stock browser at 30-40% brightness. Also, turn off your auto brightness... it will never save you battery but use more. it will almost always be brighter then you need. Just adjust the brightness as you need it. I run mine at 20-25% brightness unless i need it higher.
hope this helps.
on GPS, turn on waze navigation
turn on wifi tethering, connect another device to it and play a 2 hour HD video on youtube
at the same time connect to a bluetooth speaker and play a song
screen brightness set to maximum
do the above 4 at the same time. should be dead in less than 2 hours

And appears you have bad reception. That could explain the battery drain.

Bad reception or low signal drains battery because the phone is actively looking for better signal or closer cell tower if you have 1 bar or 2 bars i would turn off data or switch to wifi if you're home. Another thing also another member above said Facebook and Facebook Messenger are FAMOUS like i mean Arnold Schwarznegger famous for draining the battery in the background because they are constantly doing shady stuff when you're not looking syncing messages or listening to push notifications, also that Instagram looks suspicious as hell, i don't have one but it looks weird in my eyes that it drains so much in less than an hour.
If i was in your place i would uninstall Facebook and FB Messenger and Instagram then charge the phone to 100 before bed and when you wake up you should have about 96% left if it's like 90% or lower then yeah an app is running in the background syncing and won't let your phone go to to sleep and my bet is on those 3 apps Or just turn off Sync from the pull down menu and see what happens, let us know here what you find out good luck

Bad reception or low signal drains battery because the phone is actively looking for better signal or closer cell tower if you have 1 bar or 2 bars i would turn off data or switch to wifi if you're home. Battery doesn't deteriorate that fast unless you let the battery drain all the way to 0 multiple times. Lithium ion batteries have a finite amount of charges to them, it is best to keep the battery in the range of 20% to 80%.
Download an app called AccuBattery i have the full version you can find out the status of your battery and what's going on with it

I know, I am charge it when it goes to 5% and leave it to 96% . Every day I must charge my phone 2 times.
Also I have the full version of this application on my smartphone, it's just shows the battery life while having this app in the background but it keeps drain because it consume battery.
I will download it again and see the battery .
Weird cuz after flashing the official firmware nothing changes....

What do you see in 2 days of using this app ?
I noticed about 2 months ago my battery life started to tank as well. I've changed nothing about my device and when I turn data off in strictly use Wi-Fi it drains even faster even with sync all turned off

It doesn't show much it's been 2 days but something is killing your battery. I purchased the s10+ Exynos version and haven't done anything to it yet no apps installed just the firmware upgrade to CTF1 June1 security patch and battery is fine here so it must be software related.
Try to find an app called BetterBatteryStats i'm sure you heard of it that app will show you in detail who or what is preventing your phone from going into sleep even system apps are acting up it will show so try that i'm pretty sure an system app is acting up.
In my old days from kitkat and lollipop era the Google play services was always the problem back then.
I forgot also another app Wakelock Detector i don't know if that app is still around that's what i used to find out what was killing my battery on my Note 3 lol

Yeah I would install those apps i mentioned to the guy above to try and trace the cause i'm pretty sure an app or a system app is using wakelock to prevent the phone from going into sleep or deep sleep
Apps that use GPS are common and wifi as well. Lately i've been reading that last firmware update messed up the phone so one step at a time we'll find out who the culprit is
First time I see this popup.
I thought don't needed to run any commands or to be rooted.
Check this out guys. Is it bad ?
Do I need to change my battery ?
