[Q] Dropped Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

New here, so be kind
With all the tech reviewers saying the Nexus 4 is quite fragile if dropped, I was wondering if anyone had dropped theirs and it survived.
I dropped mine from about 4ft onto a hard surface, picked it up fearing the worst, and not a mark on it!!

Got out of my car with mine on my lap, dropped 2ft to a concrete floor, scratched on the corner, glass both sides was fine. Lucky escape.

Two sides of beveled glass, sure its fragile.. But it'll survive most "minor" drops, and a few larger ones, if you're worried (like me) just buy a case?
This case is rated to withstand 6+ feet drops (I have it)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/NEXUS-BALLISTIC-SHELL-SERIES-Black/dp/B00B5SCDN8/
Its also on sale in the US and can be found here:
http://www.goballisticcase.com/products/lg-nexus-4-ballistic-shell-gel-sg-series-case
Its an amazing case, really worth the money.

Ballistic SG Case Worth it
I have the ballistic sg case and love it.
It is a bit bulky but the hard plastic back outer makes it feel good compared to all TPU or Silicon Cases.
Have dropped the phone from 4 ft several times onto hard flooring and concrete on the corner with no issues.
Cheers,
OldTimer

gorilla glass really is glass....

Found out the hard way, it met concrete
Phone works fine though
Yep I shattered mine a few weeks ago. Replacement glass is about $50. It's really not that difficult to change. Make sure the glass you buy comes with adhesive attached. That will save a lot of time. Also wear rubber gloves so you don't smudge the inside of the screen.
Did you get it on ebay? Just wondering if the ones from ebay are not just plastic knock-offs

Wow! That looks awful. I guess screen protectors don't really offer much protection. XD
If i did not have screen protection the glass would fly away an i woudl have lcd exposed..... it hit the ground with rhe corner where the camera is anx this part was not covered by the foil... there is actually a small hole there.
I will by another ishieldz after repair for sure!!!!

I am VERY disappointed at the Atrix's gorilla glass, but I should have known better than to trust marketing. I've managed to scratch two screens in less than three months with zero effort.
The first was by brushing a nearly-blunt knife's edge against it, the second by letting it drop exactly TEN centimeters on a metal table. This is ridiculous, by all the marketing involving it, you would believe it to resist it to anything short of a point-blank shot. Long way from that to knife-rubbing.
and that is why I purchased two phones
No seriously tho where did u buy ur part from? Ebay ?if so is it the same?
It really depends on the angle it falls on. I've dropped mine on concrete once but I had a basic case on and it saved it. Get case guys its worth it try ebay.
Yeah the Gorilla glass is terrible. I have a non Gorilla glass phone and it has no scratches but my Atrix has dozens of tiny hairline scratches all in it. It kills me just to shine it in the sun. I'm wondering if it's really just a film on the glass getting scratched rather than the glass itself though...
completely agree with all of you. the atrix gorilla glass is terrible. I have had 3 iphones and never a scratched screen despite no screen protectors. I am very careful to put it in a pocket with nothing else. I let my slip in the car while putting in the car dock and it slid on the dashboard. picked it up and it has a 2cm long scratch in the middle of the screen that I can feel. this glass stinks.
Folks, you really need to look up the specs on Gorilla glass. It's not indestructible. There is a thread somewhere here from a couple of months back where I posted all the specs, and they are not that fantastic. Better than the regular glass used, sure, but Gorilla is especially susceptible to pressure.

I have had three phones with gorilla glass and haven't managed to scratch a single one of them. Brushing agains a knife isn't "zero effort" in our universe.
Am I just crazy lucky then? I've dropped my phone numerous times and the I as of yet don't even have a single scratch on my screen let alone any type of serious cracks. Compared to previous phone screens this thing is indestructible.
I guess next time make sure it hits the concrete with the corner where the front cam is
What sux is that all 40 dollars screens on ebay are not oem parts. Oem is 110

Nope. Just a drop..... tried to calibrate a compass... so there was some rotation......

I managed to have mine fly out of my hand as I took it out of my pocket and it fell right onto concrete from like three feet. And of course it was the day that I didn't want to put it in the case. No scratches or shattered glass on the Gorilla Glass, just some scuffs and dings on the battery cover. I got another battery cover from Motorola for free and you can't even tell I dropped it. Works fine. Definitely got lucky. My wife dropped her iPhone 3GS in a parking lot and it totally shattered.
Hmmm.....I understand that Gorilla glass isn't indestructible, but it sure is pretty scratch resistant IMO. I am in a trade that my hands are dirty pretty often and I have yet to have a single scratch on my screen. I am still pretty impressed overall with the screens. My Captivate was the same way.
The picture from the OP shows that it took a hit in the corner, probably the most vulnerable (and probably common) place for it to break. Any phone would suffer the same fate. (unless you have a good case of course).
Not complaining... It was my clumsiness. $36.54 plus shipping for OEM part replacement from these ppl:

Screen chipped after 6 days of ownership!

As per the title.
I wouldn't mind, but I haven't been abusing the phone in any way. It has not been dropped, bumped in to or had anything placed or dropped on the screen. It has always been placed in a pouch after use and there is nothing inside the pouch that could scratch or chip it. But there it is, 1cm below the 'S' in Samsung - a 1mm diameter chip on the screen. It wasn't there yesterday, but it's there today.
I phoned Orange and told them, expecting to be told to take a running jump, but they are delivering a replacement handset to me tomorrow, so that is one bit of good news for me. A screen protector will then be applied ASAP!
Is this screen, purportedly made from Gorilla Glass, generally just ridiculously easy to chip and/or scratch? Or have I just been very unlucky? Or is Gorilla Glass just generally **** (which is the conclusion I am being drawn to after hearing plenty of scare stories regarding the latest HTC phones, and seeing a colleagues Desire S which is absolutely chipped and scratched to buggery)?
It's strange, but I've come from a HTC Desire after 18 months with no screen protector having ever been applied and being kept in a similar pouch to my GS2, and there isn't a mark on the screen...
Bizzare, i have mine a good few months now and have dropped it twice and it's fine, granted i have a case and a screen protector but i was hammered drunk the weekend and took my phone out of my pocket to answer a call in a crowded bar and someone barged by and the phone went out of my hand onto the floor face down, cue me picked it up and not a scratch on it so i have no idea what happened to yours mate for a phone so slim it's amazing, one only has to look at this video.
That can only be unlucky, I dropped mine down a flight of stairs in a pub and watched as it went like a £400 slinky with only a £3 ebay case to protect it and it was fine. The screen is pretty tough.
I've beat mind to death since release and nothing noticeable.

Sounds like a manufacturing defect in the glass more than anything else.
Its probably a good idea to use screen protectors and some form of a case to anyone else reading this that hasn't bottom one yet.
I'm not trying to be the "I told you so guy" (I hate people like that) but I was in the same situation as OP myself using a different phone, and I'd like to save someone else from suffering the same fate...

I'm inclined to agree. The phone certainly hasn't been mistreated in any way, so I can't think of any other reason for it to appear.
Dropped my phone yesterday onto solid flooring tiles at work and it just bounced a few times and not an issue.
It's a plus of the plastic used IMO. Yes it feels tacky but it's damn strong and absorbs force extremely well. Weight also helps.
I had my Galaxy Ace get a scratch in the top-left corner about .8cm long. Sure, Gorilla Glass seems more resistant to minor scratches you get from being in a pocket, but it's by no means invincible.
I scratched my screen on the 2nd day of having it just by it being in my jean pocket on its own. Since that I always put it in a soft case if I'm wearing jeans, but still managed to get another one in roughly the same place... I had my Desire for about 16 months and dropped it many times and no scratches on the screen lol typical. Can only see the scratches if I look for them though so not too bad.
defected glass is the biggest possibility. My GS2 unknownly got out of my pocket when I was sitting, but no scratch at all
Gorilla glass should have a somewhat higher surface hardness, that's all. Nothing magical about it, except the hype.
And increasing surface hardness usually makes a material more brittle, meaning it chips and cracks more easily (and dramatically).
You can't have it all...

Whether or not a gorilla glass, i always prefer to apply an invisible shield by zagg, as soon as i take out the phone off its box. I have seen the result and its tremendous.
One phone had shattered glass but because invisible shield was applied, touch screen was still usable and one phone fell off from about 10 feet hight and nothing happened to it as because of the same.
Just my two cents.
Cheers
my phones bn gud past 3 months.. i think u r "careless" bro
I also chipped my screen.. I had a bottle opener on my car keys and forgot which pocket 2 put them in. So they can get scratched quite easily although the chip is tiny. I think a pocket pouch would probably have prevented this. I love the slipperyness of the screen and will never cover it.

i actually have had the same thing happen to mine.mine cracked above the ear piece to the out side edge where the glass is at its thinnest point.i have a case and it hasnt been dropped.almost as if it was point loaded from underside of glass.pissed me off as i imported my phone on release.just learnt to live with it

[Q] Anyone not using a case or bumper or screen protector at all?

Despite my concerns about the glass back on the Nexus 4, I went ahead and got one, for various reasons (my other leading contender was a HTC One X+).
But I hate cases. Just wondering if anybody who has had the Nexus 4 for a while has been using it without a case or bumper (or screen protector). How has that gone? Glass back okay? Cracks? Scratches?

I received my phone at the end of November and didn't have any protection on it. It lasted until this week, when the glass back shattered (not from any impact, I believe it was the result of temperature differences). It had gotten a little bit of wear and tear, with a few hairline scratches on the glass.
If you want to keep your phone in pristine condition, wrap it up. If you're okay with it getting wear and tear, the bumper should be fine. If you go bare, I believe it's probably just a matter of time before something happens.
I've been using the Nexus 4 with a Diztronic case and it seems fine, however I'm still awaiting an OtterBox for my Nexus 4.

I'm not using protection... It is just a matter of time before something happens... But in the mean time this phone feels and looks awesome.
I'm an architect and it has always bothered me to cover up nice design... Though, I do wish they had prioritized durability in their design criteria...
P
I got n4 when it first came out so there were no decent cases around. I used my phone naked for about two weeks and ended up with three scratches on the back and a few more on the bezel.
I now have the LG bumper and a screen protector on the back. The front is holding on line a champ though so im not using protection.
I got the scratches because the phone feel of my desk twice (be careful is really slippery).

not a single scratch!
The phone comes with a screen protector on the back that is so clear and thin, that I didn't even realize it was there, It has protected the actual phone from scratches. Though a body screen protector is on it's way and a nice hybrid case that covers the front too. I'm not rough with my phones, but my GS2 has almost no bezel left from the nicks. And my hopes are to sell the Nexus 4 for enough to buy the nexus 5 when it comes out (as many people seem to have been able to do that with the galaxy nexus)
Thanks for the replies.
Yeah, for now I've left the plastic covering that comes on the back, since it's not very noticeable anyway. Maybe I'll get a bumper at some point. It's the experiences of people who have the back shatter without any obvious impact that worries me.

Do you have a sense of the particular temperature situation that caused the problem?
Ive got that paranoid over reading threads about the N4 exploding in to a billion shards of glass for no reason i ordered a case before i even ordered the dam phone!

Oddly, it was unseasonably warm last week, with morning temperatures in the mid-40's and highs near 70. I suspect that the phone warmed up from using the GPS (Nexus 4 owners know how warm they can get) and then because I had ambient air coming out of the vents, that cooled it down. Over the course of two months of doing this, it probably weakened the glass and then one day, it all just gave out.
I bought a screen protector for the front and back, the screen looked horrible so took it off. Back protector is still on

I posted about this earlier but I had it less than a week and was so careful with it because of what I read and noticed a hairline crack about a 1/2 inch long starting from the middle edge. No drops or anything. I immediately ordered a Zagg protector and only put it on the back. I'm hoping it stops it from running any further.
I haven't put it on the front because I hate the way it feels, and the Gorilla Glass seems to resist scratches very well; unless you do something stupid like keep it in the same pocket as keys or change or something. I had my SII for almost 2 years with no screen protection and the front glass looks brand new. And the front of this is Gorilla Glass 2 so hopefully it will hold up even better.
I wish they would have used the same glass on the back as the front, but I'm sure the cost would have been too much.

Mines been naked since december and its still good. I have it in a pouch when in my bag to prevent scratches.
My oleophobic coating has pretty much gone though. Screen is no where near as smooth as it was. I'm going to try the fusso liquid coating. Anyone have any experience with this?

Used mine for 2 months without any protection. Fell once on the pavement, got few bad dings on the chrome plastic bezel, guess it's time for a bumper to cover that up. Also has couple of scratches on the back. Front glass looks perfect so far.
I used my first nexus 4 without any protection and after a month, the back glass had lots of scratches and the front only a few ones (usually invisible). Then I had problems with it and I placed a RMA, this one has had from the first day a screen protector and a TPU case.
Got my Nexus 4 a few days ago but was still waiting on my case to come in. I decided not to take off the front and back screen protector that came with it.
Good thing I didn't too because yesterday I was listening to music on my phone. A coworker bumped into me and it fell out of my hand (about chest height) and landed face down. I was in shock and couldn't move for a good 6 seconds. Thoughts were racing through my head. Lol. I was like yup. Only two days in and my phone is shattered. It's done for.
I picked it up and there were a lot of scratches on the screen. My face was so sour. I tried to rub it off but it wouldn't come off. After work, I went inside my car and looked at it again. I decided to take the screen protector off. Lo and behold, the screen was pristine. Not a single crack or scratch. I was so relieved. Lol.
My case finally came in today. I would advise for a case to at least protect the back. I won't be using a screen protector though.

I've had mine since the last week of Nov. I use it 24/7 no case no screen protector. And I stay in Houston where the weather is constantly changing. No issues here whatsoever. Still looks brand new.

I can't stand cases or screen protectors. I carry the phone in the front pocket of my jeans and a case simply makes the phone too bulky to carry for me. Nothing ever goes in the same pocket as my phone, so I don't worry about scratches so much.
That being said, over time there is no way to prevent the back and sides from being scuffed up. Not only that, this phone is pretty slippery totally naked. To solve these two problems, I use Skinomi carbon fiber skins not only on this N4 as I did on my GS2 and my Transformer Prime and dock. I like to keep my devices in mint condition for resale value. I highly recommend.
I've had a Cruzerlite TPU case on my N4 since day one. Still in perfect condition. I ordered the official bumper when it went back in stock last week. I don't like it. Way too slippery, especially compared to the grip the TPU case provides. The bumper looks better, it's sexy, I'll give it that... but the device doesn't feel secure in my hands at all. I went back to the TPU case and I'm returning the bumper.
This is the first phone I've used a case on. I generally hate the added bulk and covering the design. But the horror stories about the glass back are far too numerous to go naked with the N4. The Cruzerlite case is quite thin and I've grown to like it.
I bought case but don't use it .
No screen protector from last 1 month .
I do have protector for back but not any case.
I just be careful not to drop my phone . I did drop it once but it was from 2 feet on the carpet . have no scratch on front or back but screen need to be cleaned cause It gets dirty.
Only scratched I got is on the bezzel and it was due to my case so I stopped using case.

Broken Back with Bumper or TPU case on Nexus 4?

Just curious, has anyone broken/cracked the back of their device, while they had a bumper(OEM or Poetic) or TPU case on it, from a drop? Looking to see how these accessories are holding up.

Only had my phone for 2 days. I am using an S-Line grip case, £1.99 on eBay. Some people hate them because they are a bit sticky and what not, however I dropped mine on the train when the ticket inspector started hassling me. No cracks in the back, no cracks in the screen, slight mark on the £1.99 case :good:
Doing its job.
I was using a Cruzerlite Androidified case because the official bumpers weren't available. I felt really secure with that case. I recently got the bumper when it became available and am using it with an Xtreme guard clear skin on the back. I was a bit nervous about so much of the phone being unprotected with plastic or rubber, but so far no incidents. But I'm also very careful with it. I don't baby it, but I'm not climbing trees or having wrestling matches with it in my pocket either.
I never dropped it with the case, but it has slipped once from my hand with the bumper (because its a lot more slippery with just a clear skin on the back). It survived just fine with only a minor scuff to the bumper which I was able to buff out.
I'm very clumsy and don't have any case on mine. It's survived 3-4 waist high drops into tile and concrete with just a couple scuffs on the bevel

Edited because of predictive text...
I've had mine for about a week now. Have no screen protector on the front but have left the plastic sheet that the phone came with on the back. Have also slipped it into a Nilkin case that I bought from eBay. It's a hard plastic but thin case, feels well solid. I have had no cracks or issues and yes, I have dropped it once from about a metre onto tile flooring. I guess ultimately, it's how you treat the phone and the luck you have. I would say, if you have some sort of a casing for it, you should be pretty safe.

Z3 Screen Durability

Hey guys,
I have a Z3C. Love the phone obviously. It's awesome. I had my phone on the top of my desk, it fell to my keyboard tray maybe 6 inches lower and the screen shattered. I've read on the web that similar durability issues plague the Z3C. I'm wondering if your experiences with the Z3 have been similar. Can the Z3 withstand minimal abuse like what killed my Z3C, or it is similarly susceptible? Thanks
I've dropped my Z3 about 5 times already including on tile and asphalt and its not even scratched... Probably has to do with the plastic / rubber corners, does the compact design have that?
I've dropped my Z3 over five times and the glass is in perfect condition. I had tempered glass on for two of the attempts it fell and only the nilken tempered glass shattered. The nylon corner bumps work pretty well in ensuring that the Z3 is durable and shatter resistant. Although I did get scared at first (hence why I bought the tempered glass), my worries were completely unfounded and my Z3 is still in perfect condition (aside for small marks on the nylon corners).
I would say that if you drop the phone flat on the ground with the glass hitting the ground first, you will probably suffer. If you are planning to replace it, get a case to feel more secure. Otherwise, if you want to keep the aesthetics of the phone, get a tempered glass and you can feel at ease.
I've dropped mine numerous times and it survived. Keeping it in my back pocket broke the glass...

As my luck has it, the first three days of my Z3 in my ownership saw it fall at least 5 times, two of them from a desk's height and on the floor tiles. It only sufferd minimal nicks on the bronze finish, nothing else. Can't wait for the tempered glass and the TPU case I ordered alongside the phone to arrive...
It's crazy... most of my friends have galaxy phones and they've had so many cracked screens issue. In 4 smartphones I've owned, starting with LG G2x, and Z, Z1S, and now Z3, my phones have never cracked. I also use no case.
Guess i'm lucky?
Mine has come through a couple of drops unscathed, dropped from hip height on marble with no case, only standard screen protector

No cracks but I got a pretty big scratch on the screen within my first week and I never ever put it in a pocket or in a bag with other items. Since then I got one of the nillkin glass screen protectors. Not a scratch on it and I'm far less careful with it now. Why couldn't Sony just use the glass Nillkin uses?
I wonder if I can pay Sony to replace my screen down the line for a fee. Then I wouldn't worry so much.

I dropped mine from a chair onto a patio which is like concrete and apparently hit the corner of the phone. It cracked the corner of the back glass about an inch radially. I used some glass glue and covered it up. Its fine now still waterproof.
Sony's lame, the back should have been carbon fiber for shock proofing and the edges should have ridges for grip. When I first got it it was so slippery it was ridiculous.
Funny enough, 5 minutes after I cracked the back somebody gave me a really nice leather case for it.

I love the slippery cool glass slick feel. I would not settle for anything else. Since my iPhone 4s, the Nexus 4 and now this, I realise i'm addicted to these materials. I have dropped mine but always on carpet, no damage thank God. My brother dropped his uncountable times and onto wood floor and tile etc with no cracked glass, just metal rim damaged and scuffed.
I haven't dropped mine and do not have a case nor any screen protection. I don't excessively wipe the phone down but do wipe it when the fingerprints begin to bug me. I phone mostly wipes itself when inserting/removing from my pocket.
I've had the device or about 1.5-2 months and baby it.
The screen has zero micro scratches or any other permanent marks, but the rear panel has micro scratches from simply being placed on a hard, smooth, CLEAN surface like a table. I don't slide the phone across surfaces and put down/pick up the phone very carefully so it doesn't slide/scrape across any surface.
So while the screen appears to be fairly scratch resistant, my experience is that the back becomes easily scratched even when taking the utmost care.
My phone is black which shows these scratches more easily than a lighter color would.
I've had mine for a few months and dropped it several times, but my luck ran out today. Cold, slushy parking lot + road salt was apparently the last straw...
Have you heard of glass protection and cases? I've dropped my Z1 many times and no issues, applying the same protection to Z3.

I had a Terrapin case and a Rhino Shield screen protector on it, but while the screen protector only had a couple.. what feel like small puncture holes? , the screen itself was completely shattered.
My rear Glas cracked today for amusingly no reason.
We'd just been out to walk the dog, as we came back an put our phones on the table, we heard a cracking sound but couldn't picture where it came from. As I went over to pick up my phone we saw all the cracks all across the rear.
How could this happen, I doubt through the difference in temperature, although it really was cold outside today.
It's a really expensive device and I am really upset about this right now. How can the glas, even if it is just the rear, crack out of appearingly no reason???
Probably from the temperature difference? Live in Minnesota but have not suffered from it so far though I have heard many instances like yours. Another XDA member got a free replacement, try talking to Sony.
I actually guess it really is from.the temperature difference.
Already spoken to my retailer about this, they're picking the device up tomorrow for a free repair or replacement.
Also confirmed that there a a lot of devices with such a problem. I thought they had enough experience by now with glas fronts and backs.
It really is upsetting
Well that's good, no worries. In fact BBC's Watchdog program did an investigation for the Z1 or Z2 for the same problem after many people complained to them. Sony agreed the issue exists and said they will do free replacements as long as it's only "a single fine crack" at the time. I think they are not so picky now.
