Couldn't take it any longer... New N10 owner - Eee Pad Transformer General

I couldn't take the reboots, freezes or general crappieness of the TF101 anymore. I broke down and bought a Nexus 10 and its amazing, I have used it for an entire 10 minutes without it rebooting on me once (which I cannot say for the TF101).
So long guy.

You should have spent a little time on custom roms instead of so much money on a new device

Congrats on the new toy. I agree that custom ROMs make the TF101 an amazing device, but enjoy!

Seems to be bad luck. My tf has been free of SoD or RR for months and months... Using megatron and guvevor's kernel and now with tim's rom and kernel it's even better

I agree, I was thinking about getting a new tab, until I tried the custom ROMs, now it is better than a new tablet.

I installed numerous custom roms, the best was the EOS which is currently on it. The freezes would either happen within the first 5 minutes, or wait for 15 minutes or 35 minutes. It also had the death sleep, if I left it alone for more than 20 minutes with the screen off I had to hold down the volume button and power button because the screen wouldn't come on. Its a very frustrating device to say the lease.

Well i never had any reboots\freezes since JB roms
But still The N10 an excellent device congrats!

I think I had maybe a handful of RR's since the last rendition of ICS. Got even better with EOS 3 and 4. It's been ages.
I had SODs way back in the earlier ICS days, too. But I almost forgot what those were since .27. None since JB. Once in a blue moon I'll get the pop-up window giving me the option to wait or force-close an app, usually during a file transfer, hitting wait always solves the problem. Happens so infrequently that I probably shouldn't even mention it.
My only reboots lately have been to flash a new version of the ROM. I too like the thing better now than I did when I bought it, and I was actually pretty pleased with it then. I still use it 3:1 over our N7. I am expecting my next tablet to be 16 cores @ 3GHz.

My experience with custom ROMs wasn't as smooth either. I tried latest Cyanogen and EOS4 on my TF101G in hopes that it might fix it, or that I might find out why these symptoms occur, but no. A few days ago, I went back to stock ICS and it seems semi-stable right now, but I'll wait and see.
Either way, the case of SODs seemed more prominent on EOS4 for me: I'd want to turn the device back on to do something on it, and it won't, so I had to hold Power until it restarted itself. Happened about once in 1~2 days.
Another symptom that was annoying the living hell out of me is the launcher disappearance: at some point (probably when memory usage reaches high enough), the launcher (ANY launcher - I tried them all!) would just disappear and leave me with nothing but a background. I could still tap on things and they would run, but I wouldn't see any context menus or the app drawer, or anything else launcher-related, not until I kill all the running applications to free the memory (helps for a short amount of time), or plain reboot (helps for longer than that). This problem is also apparent on ICS, so I didn't quite get rid of it by downgrading...
Anyway, congrats on the N10, spotdog. It will probably rid you of this mess. Me - I think I'll stay for a while. The dock is comfortable in a way for what I do, which is the only reason I got this device for a relatively cheap price. Other than that, a part of me kinda regrets doing it.

I have rooted and flashed pretty much every rom available for our transformer and every single rom is the same. Constant lag and issues. I don't know what's wrong with this tablet, the transformer I had before this one never lagged with any rom.

Same experience that drove me away from purchasing another Asus tablet. That is also the main reason I didn't go for the Nexus 7 was because Asus manufactured it.

First Impressions of a new 10.1 owner.

Just got a new 10.1 yesterday and gave myself a day to see how much I like it. Speed is always a big deal for me. Im actually typing from the tab now. The keyboard isnt too bad, but I dont see a autocorrection so far, but have not looked into it. The speed of the Touchwiz and homescreens is much better than most had me believe. I dont have any lag between the tapping of the arrow and the animation to show the quick apps.
The tablet also came fully updated, as far as the tablet shows through the update wizard. I will eventually check up the dev section and make sure I have the latest update today or tomorrow. The touchscreen does show a bit of lag as far as drawing with the fingers but isnt too bad and rougly on course with the A100 from Acer, my previous tablet. Battery is also great, and came 50% charged when I bought it, and didnt drop below 40% for the 4 hours I had used it before throwing it on the charger and watching some youtube and netflix.
Anyways, that was a quick review, and I love the tablet as of right now, when I thought the Tw UX was going to be a pain, but hasshown to be opposite and not too bad.
Thanks,
Mike
I just ordered one of these. I dunno if I'll get it since the contract was too good to be true. Nonetheless, if it get it, it'll be a worthy successor to my übermodified ZTE Light.
try ADWlauncher ....is the best by far for interface
Go launcher HD... not on market, Google it .
It works flawlessly.

You should get "ADWlauncher Ex"
It's a very good launcher replacement, better than the stock one.
For the keyboard, you can try Thumb Keyboard
both apps aren't free... but it's worth it

Thanks all forth replies. I havebthe thumb keyboard already, but don't need a new launcher or anything yet, since the stock is working perfect. The next next thing I'm waiting on is the ics update in the coming months. I do plan to root this soon, but won't use an ics Rom since I use the cameras often. I may throw Task or overcome on this instead while I wait. Overall a very good tablet, and the detail is amazing as far as the resolution and everything else goes.

I have never liked ADW launcher and tried the Go HD launcher today and I don't like it either.. I'm with you, I enjoy the stock one the best..
Thumb Keyboard ROCKS and so does HD Widgets and Reader HD..
Task 14 is just as fast as ICS and its rock solid and stable...
Enjoy the Tab, I still love mine 6 months after buying it...
Mine came with Swype built in (a TMobile tab) and I rooted it, and uninstalled the installed version and use the newest one from their site. I just love the black keys.

If you are on HC 3.2 you are alright, but if still on 3.1 I'd news astonished if you liked the touch wiz. It its just horrible. ADW EX its the lightest and the most heavily customisable. The most appealing is spb 3d. It its amazing but uses more ram.
However congrats for your new tab and hope you enjoy it;-)

The stock experience was great. Im using task 14 now and honestly don't see very much improvement in speed, but I always love a custom rom and root. Honestly I prefer stock launchers over custom ones for no apparent reason .

Is it worth flashing?

So guys I was asking myself "is it worth flashing?". Why you ask? Well because if I took a look in the development section and it doesn't look like any of the current roms out are stable and they all seem to have many know issues. So I would like to know what you have flashed and how you like the experience compares to stock rom?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
I have flashed a bunch of roms on this tab. Most of them are stable now. ALL of them running ics are better than the honeycomb touchwiz that comes pre installed. The only caveat I say to you, is that the camera still isn't working on the roms I've been using as my dailies. (Aokp and Nightlies) If that's a deal killer for you, then stay away from the ics builds for now. But I can tell you as someone who has a 2 year + old Droid Incredible running ics AND this tab running ics, I can never go back. Its just THAT good. Especially on this tab where it Truly shows off the big improvements on the OS.

Ah OK. (Just realised you're right)
I'm using overcome 2.3.1. It's not ics. It's pretty nice. Went from multiple daily reboots to 3 or 4days of uptime. I use it a lot for reading, browsing, netflix, remote mgmt of servers and it holds up well. I bought 3 Samsung docks and have it hooked up to my home theater for music via hdmi, on my nightstand (ditched the tv in the bedroom) and another in my office. I wouldn't have been able to keep it without a rom. Give it a shot. Take your time and read up, it's pretty simple. I'm kinda pissed they made such a great tablet and put such a horrible buggy os on it.
I saw all the comments here suggesting to throw a rom on it to improve performance but I didn't put much stock in it. It's not an exaggeration. You have to ditch the tw launcher too. I'm using Go's tablet edition. I guarantee you will not go back to stock. I chose overcome because it's really stable. No point trying to escape bugs and using a buggy rom.
Getting off my soapbox now. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Yes that was one of my major concerns of ics. I'm running dark sides evolution 2 beta 3 on my sgs2. But when I came here to read about the 10.1 ics versions I was kind of sad. Because like it was said the 10.1 is awesome but cannot be used on stock w/o mods. I really just want to get on a stable release that doesn't have this issue where you could only charge your tab with the wall charger. I need a different kernal.

With Task v14, I feel that the Galaxy tab is vastly improved from the stock bloatware.
I don't really care about ICS on the Galaxy. Task 14 is so good, I don't see ICS as improving much. I have ICS running on HP Touchpad and Kindle Fire, right now.
it's nice, but IMHO not really worth all of the hype over an optimized GB ROM. YMMV.
Task v 14 is really great, highly recommend it over any ics roms.

I'm actually happy with my stock rooted GS2. The only problems I've had are few and far between and solved with a reboot.
I looked at all the major roms on the dev page and Overcome seemed to be the safest stable rom.

my $.02: My use-case for my tablet is almost entirely at home. I have the Wi-Fi only model, so I don't do a lot of "mobile" stuff with it. I have a Galaxy Nexus phone which I generally carry everywhere.
What I thought: As a techie, I want everything to be fully working just because, and as a result I cannot accept a tablet without a working camera!
Real Life: I use my tablet for IM, web browsing, reading comics, and playing games, generally around the house or while commuting. That's actually it. Number of times I did a video chat on my tablet: 1. Number of times I actually wanted to video chat on my tablet: maybe 2. Because I work with a Galaxy Nexus all the time, having the same OS & ROM on both devices is honestly nicer / easier / more lazy-friendly. Its honestly pretty slick to have Chrome syncing across my computers, my phone, and my tablet.
I recently tried to go back to Honeycomb since I once again thought "gee maybe I should use the camera on my tablet". Honeycomb just feels like ICS with training wheels on it I really don't like it as much. This probably as much a placebo effect as anything. Also, the camera isn't as good as my Galaxy Nexus or my actual camera, and I feel like a douche holding my tablet up to take a picture. Would being able to Skype on my tablet be cool? Yes. Would I use it that often? No.
I'm going back to AOKP damnit. I can deal with a non-working camera for a while.
And GPS??? My device doesn't have mobile data, so it really doesn't matter to me that much, even though I thought it would.
Bottom Line: You can back all your stuff up, and you're not out anything, so why not try it?

Performance issues on new Tf300 running build. 26

I just received a brand new Tf300 a few days ago. It is the first tablet I have ever owned and don't know if the performance issues I am experiencing are actually common among other tablets. Whenever I quickly switch from one app to another, the device slows down and then I get a pop up message telling me to wait for the app or force close it. The problem gets worse when I am downloading stuff in the background. I have never had this problem before with any of the 4 android phones I have owned. Does anyone know if there is a solution to this?

Trying doing a cold boot. It also depends on what apps you are using, some might not be complete compatible. A lot of people are having problems with google chrome, also the stock browser is kind wonky. Suggest using Dolphin or Opera.
I havent seen the issue you mentioned personally yet on my TF300, however it has been mentioned a few times on other sites & reviews.
It seems to have something to do with the I/O communication to the memory while downloading/installing multiple things at once through Google Play. Its been said to have an impact on OS performace and that the "wait or FC" message is common. Just hit wait and it will be fine.
If its happening when you are idle...Id say something is running in the background you dont know about and using memory.

I did try a cold boot once and it sisnt so anything, really. I also never actually tried running the stock browser. Immediately after turning on the device, I downloaded Quick ICS Browser. Also, I'm not are if the browser is the main problem affecting the performance, as I seem to be having this issue even when downloading from the market or switching through apps.

I actually have been doing this, but honestly I don't think this is something we should have to do after paying $400 for a brand new tablet that I would assume would be in perfect working condition right out of the box :-/

I have not had any problems switching from apps, even while updating several apps at once on the market. I guess since your Pad is practically brand new, just give it a a day or two of use and see if that helps settle down the system (with a couple of reboots in between). In worst case scenario, I would say exchange it for a new one.

Im not exactly sure that one would consider it a defect. I think its just an example with how the OS performance is affected while installing multiple apps at one time.
Id say you could avoid the problem by installing only a couple things at one time. I have an HTC phone and the same thing happens when I try to install from Google Play and tinker with other stuff at the same time.

You're probably right. Maybe it is the fact that most apps on the market are primarily made for Android phones, not android tablets. I will uninstall all apps and see if I can install one by one to see if I can find out which ones are the ones giving me problems.

I've been having exact same problems on prime (tf201) ... and on top of than random reboots, shut-offs, battery discharging, and non working gps (hardware problem)...
I came to a conclusion that asus sucks... here is why: i have two phones running ICS, and neither has this issues, and both are MUCH faster than prime / tf300 - so it is purely a bunch of software bugs, and asus had SO much time to fix them, and still people across the board have these same problems with transformers
long story short - i retuned prime, and was/am considering tf300... but it looks like i will pass..., although i really like the dock

long story short - i retuned prime, and was/am considering tf300... but it looks like i will pass..., although i really like the dock

I DONT Have those issues with my prime. not everyone has them across the board. while some do, slot don't. GPS works great with the dongle Asus sent out for free. alot of the reported issues on both prime and 300 have been reported by various other tablets and phones running ICS. doesn't matter if your two phones don't. its still widely documented ICS issues across the board on most devices running ICS. this is more of a Google issue THST needs addressing. Google is the one who created ICS. these problems are limited to only Asus tablets. just Google ICS issues and tons of hits will pop up across several different devices. Google is the one who needs to step it up and address this.
Asus is a manufacturing company. they make hardware, not software. they still try to do the best they can to solve software issues. Even Asus getting frustrated because they having to try to fix stuff THST Google should be addressing, software wise.
OK, I just had to come back after a week of using and tinkering with my TF300 and after having it factory reseted and doing a cold boot reset it now works FLAWLESSLY. I love this tablet and I have downloaded tons of games that look beautiful on it. The only thing I wish were present were a bigger selection of tablet-friendly apps on the market. I also wish Google would allow us to search apps that are designed for tablets only. I have tried using the Tablified Market app and it is just too slow in my opinion and it has no option to sort by most popular or highest rated.

Were you experiencing the issue of slow performance when installing apps from the Play Store and if so did the factory reset fix it? I'm plagued by the issue where updating/installing apps kills my TF300.

When I got my TF300 I was having a similar issue. I went on app manager and cleared cache and data from the Launcher and it did the trick.

I actually have been doing this, but honestly I don't think this is something we should have to do after paying $400 for a brand new tablet that I would assume would be in perfect working condition right out of the box :-/

Could not agree more! I'm going to return mine tomorrow as not happy with it at all...I am getting the Wait\Force Close message constantly and totally sick of it since getting this tablet almost two weeks ago!
Cheers,
M
I can confirm the tabledt lags on powersaving mode but on balance and performance mode I have no issue. I used to experience this issues for the first day but after a few restarts its now working flawless , its just that powersaving mode sucks when multi tasking

This is my reply to the first post... I had exactly what you had, cold vooted several times with no results.
I had to send mine back to amazon.
Second unit? PERFECT.
This thing flies. Now I can see the 4 cores.
I own a Galaxy Note, and it was faster than my tablet. Now my tablet is faster, as it should (not WAY too fast, but indeed faster)
Good Luck

Unresponsive/rebooting tab

Soo ever since friday my tab has been going wild..
Itll just randomly become unresponsive and then reboot.
It started once i hooked it up to charge on a ferry... which makes me worry. however, i do have chrome on it. I figured after it came out of beta itd be fine, and its run fairly well up until recently.
Im stock rooted, running latest ota. Locked boot loader... though I tried to unlock before, but since im a c4okct there was a time where my sn wasnt recorded, and that's when I attempted to unlock.
Now, im worried that my tab is possibly fried, and im stuck without warrenty.
Does anyone have any ideas either way?
Thank you in advance and sorry for the rambling, i just tried to cover all the bases.
Ps - isnt ics supposed to be built off 3.0 kernel? I just noticed that this tab apparently is built on 2.6

looks like we both have lemons
kinda suck that a tablet so good has to perform so badly
hope best buy will still take in after it 30 day policy

I did a factory reset, and all seems well so far.
Just hate the stock launcher, and I can't get trebuchet to work just right anymore.

When I reset my tab it at first works well. Then as it goes on it just goes to hell. Its main problem is graphicly demanding things, like gmail animations make it crash, and so does Google Music. Google Play store also is pretty laggish (I notice a trend with google products). I want to unlock it and install CM to see if it fixes anything, but I'm worried about losing warranty. Any thoughts?

My tab too now resets it's self, and I have the issue of power off selection appearing on screen. Also, any pressure on the top left of the screen causes a reboot. Bought from eBay a month ago. US tab in the UK, i bet asus won't help me! Fault stared this week. Not built to last!

Tried reset but still have the issue. The power off icon randomly pops up and then it reboots. 3 times today so far. Followed the guide in this thread and hope it's fixed with updated firmware. Regret buying now, dull screen with horrible bleed, poor io performance, and reboots make it super unreliable.

Nexus 7 freezing issues

Alright, I am currently on my third Nexus 7 and getting a little frustrated. I really love this device and would love to customize it the way I want but I hold back just in case I have to return another one. My question is, is anyone else experiencing problems with their tablet randomly freezing? I havent seen any forums discussing this particular problem. I have a hunch it could be the Facebook app that is causing this but that is just a theory. Below is a video of said freezing problems. Sorry for the quality; it was late, i was drinking and enjoying Netflix.
Not that I've heard of, but a quick forum search would easily confirm or deny this.
Edit reason: added detail.

If your anything like me I'm constantly force stopping apps because why should they still be running of I'm not using it, right? Well I was having the same issue as you. Freezing and studdering on a quad core CPU. Mainly it was freezing in the settings menu. So I stopped force closing all these apps I usually do and the freezing stopped. I'm on about a week in with my 3rd nexus 7 and not one freeze. So if you do do as I do try just letting the apps be and "kill" them instead.

The way android is designed, apps are supposed to run in the background. Your not supposed to have a lot of free ram. 100 mb of free ram is the same as 5 mb... If it's free ram it isn't doing anything but being wasted just sitting there. Task killers are useless since eclair 2.1.the reason apps run the in the background is so you can open an app where you last left off. Among lots of other reasons. Let android manage the tasks it's really good at it.

I've had a few freezing issues on my nexus 7. I've only had it a couple of days. It becomes completely unresponsive for minutes and never recovers. I have to hold down the power button until it shuts off (20 seconds maybe).
I've had a number of other quirks that really show (to me) that you get what you pay for. Its a cheap tablet with a top end CPU/GPU, but that's about it.
Not sure what my next step is, but I doubt I would be happy with the shortcomings of the Nexus 7 even if I had a perfect device. I think I just like higher end devices is all, and I don't mind paying more for something that just works with no compromise.
Again just my opinion.

No such problems here, but if I were you I would use the Linux command line commands : top, ps, free, df. With those you should be able to find out if an app or process is misbehaving. You need to install the terminalIDE app and read about those commands.

Freezing issues
I just purchsed one... Used it for 2 days. After using for a while I consistantly had freezing, particularly when typing. I called it in for a RMA refund. Don't know what the issue is, but moving on to something more tried and true.

Freezing - yes now and then...
My Nexus 7 freezes occasionally. I have noticed that when it restarts there's a bunch of updates. Me thinks that maybe the CPU was busy doing updates while I was keying in / touching the screen etc and couldn't cope...but maybe not. These apps seem to update a lot, same goes for my notso :silly: smartphone.
Anybody else come back to your Nexus 7 that is actually completely off and requires a power button and volume down hold in order to restart? Also I find the Android OS is consuming much of the battery in some instances.

Bought my N7 three days ago and it worked brilliantly after installing all my apps from the play store then I got the message to update the OS from 4.2 to 4.2.1 which I duly obliged. Thereafter it was a totally different device with crazy stuttering just swiping home screens and and solid freezes on chrome which was especially bad. I had to do at least half dozen soft re sets when everything ground to a halt and a factory wipe none of which helped. I spent this afternoon using the nexus toolkit to unlock+root my N7 and installed nightly CyanogenMod 10.1 with jb20121212 Gapps and individually reinstalled+tested every app from play store including Chrome. Its (thankfully) now buttery smooth again and I've not had any problems whatsoever in the past 8 hours of using it. This surprised me as CM10.1 is based on 4.2.1 and maybe suggests its a problem with the stock Gapps included in the OTA?
I love android but Google are releasing these updates before they're ready and it makes the OS look unreliable in the eyes of the average consumer who has no interest in rooting and flashing roms.

I bought my wife a first generation Nexus 7 about 2 years ago and everything was fine with the tablet and is now updated with stock 4.4.4. Recently she started noticing that it would freeze for no reason and finally it got to the point where it would freeze very soon after it was booted up. I cleaned the cache and factory reset but the problem persisted. Obviously the unit is out of warranty but I called Asus to see if they could offer any advice. The only answers I got was that they couldn't do anything and it sounded like there was a problem with the motherboard. They also told me I could sent the tablet in for repairs but it would probably cost around $200! After laughing out loud at this ridiculous amount I told them I'd just go buy a Samsung Tab 4 for my wife and forget the Nexus. I bought the 8 inch Tab 4 and my wife is happy with the functioning of the product. BUT, I decided to give the Nexus 7 another chance at life so I utilized the Nexus Root Toolkit and I kept the stock 4.4.4 ROM instead of going the custom ROM route. I am pleased to report that there was NO motherboard problem and this tablet is working great so I am now the proud owner of the Nexus 7.
3year later. Still the same on 5.0.2
I really want to break this tablet on someones head who made it.
After 5.02 ...
It slowed down substantially. I did the "clear cache" which helped a little. It's so slow web browsing that I may as well not even try ... often 15 seconds to a minute to respond to a link click.
SO ... use it mostly for the Kindle app. I don't think it is the app fault, but when it locks up now, I see nothing on the screen; finally determined that it was in the process of downloading an update to some app or another, and the downloading locks the system if the kindle app is on the screen ... and seems to be a major slowdown other times.
Maybe there will be a 5.03 getting the performance back to KitKat levels.
