Vertical lines with certain shades of grey? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm seeing some backlight issues with certain shades of grey on my Nexus 4. It happens in certain places in the settings menu (near the bottom where it blends into grey) and even TWRP's grey background when backing up a rom. Franco's gamma settings help a lot, but the problem is still noticeable at higher brightness. Does anyone else have the same problem or am i being too picky? My iPod touch 4g had a horrendous problem like this where a certain shade of grey would show all these dark blotches on the screen. I figured it was due to the LCD/backlight.
Seeing this on P.A, TWRP and Stock rom.

I have the same thing but I'm just now noticing it.
Also, this may be related, whenever I flash PA and go back into twrp recovery, it takes unusually longer to boot into recovery and then I see these yellowish streaks/distortion going throughout the screen in recovery and it appears to carry over into the ROM when I system reboot.
It's happened several times, but it appears to be only when I flash PA and it goes away when I flash another ROM+kernel. I'm going to see if I can reproduce it and take a picture of it next time it happens. But after the obvious streaks went away, I noticed those gray lines, but if you look closely, there's horizontal lines too making a grid, though the vertical lines are more apparent

I feel your pain.

I also have this problem and many others. I have read many threads but no one really has the answer. I tried different Kernels and it helps but its still there.
I dont think we are being to picky, its just that we like things to be as perfect as possible, but there is no such thing.

I have had this issue from my first nexus 4, which I had issued an RMA request about this problem. My second n4 was fine and this is definitely a defect of the LCD screen.

I've spoken to a few people and checked their Nexus 4's and sure enough, they've all got it too. I think i was being too picky. It really isn't noticable unless i'm in a dark room and the brightness is high and i'm focusing on the screen. Day to day usage, i almost forget about it. It also helps that it only shows up on a certain grey colour.

Its just an effect mate, Ive seen it on everyones screenshot when they are showing there settings menu or something.

Should the screen look like this?

My Nexus 4 is under lockdown until Christmas, but I got a chance to have a play with it to make sure everything worked (just incase I had to return it).
I decided to turn the brightness all the way up to see how good the screen was (its GORGEOUS), however, when I was in settings the bottom of the screen is VERY light and it seems to get darker and darker until it gets to the top of the screen.
I turned the Brightness all the way up on my Galaxy Nexus to see of it did the same, and it appears that it does do the same, but not to the same extent as the N4?
Can anyone with a N4 confirm that this is normal behaviour?
Thanks
Stewart
The settings page is supposed to do that. Its a gradient effect

Perfect, thanks!
What the poster above said.
Harder to notice on the gnex since that amoled display is rather awful at displaying gray gradients .

Nexus 4 image persistence?

Alright, so I have a nexus 4. I don't know how long this issue has been around, since only now am I noticing it. After having a fairly high contrast image on the screen for a few seconds, such as the facebook status bar, if I go to another app or the homescreen, sometimes I can see a faint outline of the image. It can occasionally get really bad, especially after the screen has been off for a while. Like I was watching a video on firefox, so I switched to landscape mode. The video couldn't go full screen and I had two grey bars on the side. I was shocked to clearly see the firefox navbar burnt into my screen. Thankfully all of it cleared up, but I'm wondering if anyone else has an image persistence issue. I'll try and get a picture once I can find a camera with decent exposure. Also, it seems that the sides of the screen, especially the right side, are brighter than the rest of the screen, also after the screen has been off for a while. Don't know if the two issues are correlated or not, but I think they are. I was using facebook and my phone crashed with a white screen with lines going through it, awful image persistence, and terrible bleed through. Held down the power button and there was the bleed through and image persistence, along with screen flicker that makes a CRT look entirely static. I'm wondering, what the hell is up with my phone? I haven't really done anything wrong to it, this just kind of happened.
Got a photo. Couldn't find the cable to connect my camera to my computer, so I had to take a photo of a photo, and for that it turned out alright. Don't know how well it will turn out on different displays, but trust me it's there. This is the icon in the top right corner of the facebook application. When I swipe from the right to the left to see who's available for chat, I can see an outline of the icon that was there before.
I've noticed the persistence too at times, like a ghost image - CRT with a static image on too long, so if there was any doubt, it's not just you
I've had the same problem several times before. I just had it again, quite prominent! It stays for a few seconds, and then fades off to nothing.....Quite worried? :S

Problem with screen backlight

Hello,
When I checked my phone today, I noticed that on left and right side of the screen, backlight seems to be different than on the rest. This causes screen to have different colour on the borders, like a little bit brighter. Is this a common problem? Anybody else had this issue? Any way to fix this, or should I replace the whole panel?
Mine has screen bleed as well. And every P8 that i saw had an amount of light bleed. So the chance to get a new screen with same screen bleed is high..
Mine has a little in the bottom left corner, unnoticable though unless I install the Backlight Bleed Test app & run it.
I was going to ask you to post a screenshot to see how much BLB there is on yours (would've posted mine too), but it doesn't show up in screenshots.

Nightclick & LCD vs AMOLED

Last night, I went to use my night clock app with my new LG v20. On my Note 7, the screen was totally 100% black except for the numbers.
On the v20, the entire screen was stil lit - faint, but clearly still lit up in a light light grey.
Is this just how an LCD screen works, or is there something I have to do in order to get the rest of the screen to go off.
(Note, this includes the 2nd screen which was also lit - and I had the brightness at 0%).

BTW, this may need to be a separate thread - on my phone I notice that the auto-brightness tends to be too dark. Any way I can adjust it to be brighter when in auto mode, or should I just go to manual ?

Try turning off second screen and see what your results are.. Second screen has a seperate black light that slightly bleeds out to the rest of the screen. It was horrible on the V10 but much improved on the 20..

The night clock app has the option to turn off the notification, which also turns off the 2nd screen.
...oops. It did, until I followed your suggestion in the other thread about the more setting to enable time/date when in full screen or notification bar hidden. I'll have to get into the habit of turning *off* the more setting at night.
(Either way, doesn't help with the slight gray background color. I can probably just get used to it as long as I'm not damaging the screen by having it slightly on all night. I need to google if LCD screens have burn in problems I guess.)

Maybe I should just start pm'ing you all my questions

I use this on all my phones since I feel stock auto is too dim. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.velis.auto.brightness

Use comfort view on low or medium. Will help lower the ~9000K color temp some and help blacks a hair. Faint glow is typical on LCDs. Higher quality LCDs and higher quality led's can help. Lg skimped here. Sucks they didn't even give us color modes to pick from. The colors are waaay off. But using comfort view dims the blue pixels and helps considerably.

That's just how LCD works, they need CCFL or LED back light to lit up the screen, it's not possible for it to be completely black while turned on. With AMOLED the individual pixels can turn off itself which is why the black are blacker on them. OLED screens also have very high refresh rates which eliminates flickering, this is good for people who are concerned with eyes health.
Lcd doesn't get burn in, but it can get ghost image retention. It was f***ing horrible by the end of my V10 usage.. Never had the problem on the G2 3 or 4. Just the V10, even after factory resetting.

Had the same issue my V10, that is my biggest V20 concern. . My v10 was not even a year old.
I get the engineering and cost reasoning, but not sure I like the lcd screens.

Oled problem?

Hi, I moved from OG pixel to pixel 4 and noticed that screen has problem. On 100% on brightness when opening totally black picture screen is not totally turned off and when touching it screen greys out a bit. Is it bug or hardware issue?
Can anyone check it on own device?

I have noticed the following: When screen brightness is 50% or less and I touch the screen such as typing on keyboard, the screen flashes very slightly on every tap. It feels like the screen draws too much power and battery is low. I went to Verizon store to check display unit and it did the same thing. Maybe your issue is similar

I didn't contact Google because the store model had the same thing. I just tried to troubleshoot what could be causing it and seems that when I disable "smooth display" in settings>display and then tried to reproduce the issue by typing on the keyboard and the screen doesn't seem to flicker anymore.
Try to disable the setting on your phone and see. This might be a software issue then.
I found similar thread(you are probably on it too) on Google community site and replied to that thread: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/thread/22331033?hl=en

You are right I disabled smooth display and it stopped flickering but there is one more thing when brightness is on 100% and opening totally black picture I can notice little lightning of the screen in corners it means that pixels are not going off like it should be on oled screens. Could you please check it also?
It could be checked only in the dark daytime it's not noticable

Alright, I found a black image with only a small moon in the middle. Did the test on 100% full brightness but don't see any pixels on the screen. Check my image(attached) and compare.

Yes, of course. I turned off the lights. I have seen issues where some phones had some light seeping through(light bleed) at some edges. Is that what you see?

It is difficult to understand anything from the picture. Try some display test apps. Check to see if you have something installed such as 3rd party theme or an app that interferes with the display of your phone. Also if you can compare your phone with the one from the store.

If it is in the corner(s) then it is light bleed. The screen is good and it is just some screen backlight being seen through the frame. At least this is how I understand your situation from my previous experience.
