Wifi speed issue - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a problem with the wifi speed on my n4. For me it seems strange that no one seems to have the same problem as I do. I have even got a replacement phone because I thought it was wrong on my first n4 but the problem persist on my new phone as well. I hope someone can help me or maybe guide me in some way.
Probelm
Wifi speed on my n4 is really strange. When I first connect to my home network(router asus rt-n56) the speed is usually good (not always) and I get about 40mbit/s down. After some time, which vary from minutes to hours, the speed drops and caps at 8mibt/s which is slower than my mobile data speed. Sometimes toggling wifi on/off get the speed back again but only for a short time then it sets back again. About 95% of the time I am connected to the network the speed is slow. This is very annoying when downloading apps, files, syncing spotify lists and so on, to download a big file takes longer time on wifi than on 3G. Non of my other devices(galaxy s1, nexus 7 which also runs stock 4.2.2, ps3, 2 laptops) have the same issue.
What I tried
I tried a lot of different settings on the router including different firmwares, nothing helps.
I tried different networks and I only found one that worked as it should and that was at the university, on all other the problem appeard.
As I said, I have got a new nexus 4 to replace the first one but the problem persists.
I have tried changing all wifi-settings on the phone but nothing helps.
I got my first n4 for christmas and I discovered this problem almost right away. Since then I have tried to find a solution without success. It seems that the n4 has got many different wifi-issues (just google "wifi issue nexus 4") so maybe it has something to do with the software and the wifi drivers but I dont know.
Does anyone recognize this wifi-speed issue?
Thanks

Strange phone issues with Samsung Galaxy S

Hi,
I bought a Samsung Galaxy S about a month ago, and have been having odd problems with it since the off. Has anyone else had these sort of symptoms:
1. I occasionally lose my data connection - the icon disappears from the top of the screen and whilst I can still make and recieve calls and text messages, I cannot download anything in any app. The only way I've found to get my data connection back is to reset the phone. This happens maybe a couple of times a week.
2. My WiFi seems to suffer from a similar problem. I can be browsing the web on Wifi, then suddenly I'll not be able to download anything anymore. The wifi icon is still visible, but I'll basically be unable to download anything until I switch the wifi off and back on again. Then, it starts working as normal again.
In both these above scenarios, I think I've narrowed it down to primarily happening after I use the Android Market, but it's difficult to tell as it's very intermittent.
3. A couple of times since getting the phone, I've been unable to make or receive any calls. Even switching the phone off and back on didn't help - my signal bar was showing I had a signal and my data connection was still active. Couldn't tell if this was a network problem or not though as there weren't any people nearby on the same network as me. After a while, it started working normally again.
4. The email client randomly lost all of my email settings. One day I was receiving all my emails, the next day I had no email accounts set up at all.
5. I installed Sensor Dump and Phone Explorer to see what data was coming in from the sensors, and have noticed that the light sensor never sends any data. Is this normal?
I also have the usual slow-down issues, etc, but the above have got me stumped as I can't find anyone else reporting the same issues. When I first got the phone, I went crazy installing a load of Android apps, so initially I blamed the software I'd installed. After a reset and being a bit more selective with the apps I install and use, I'm still getting the same issues. I just can't pin down whether this is a faulty phone that I should return, or if there are software issues either relating to the way I'm using the phone or just with bugs in the firmware.
Has anyone else had anything like the above happen with their Galaxy S?
Thanks,
Chris.
I've experienced no.2 several times, wifi just stopping all data traffic. Not found out what causes it though.
As for the other problems, I haven't experienced any of those. Do you use automatic brightness on the display? If not, problem no. 5 might be caused by the sensor being turned off.
thanks for the reply - at least I'm not completely alone!
I have the automatic brightness turned on - which is why it seems odd. To be honest, I've never actually see the auto brightness do anything. It always seems to be the same brightness to me.
Cheers,
Chris.

I think it might be normal that older mails disappear from the inbox after some time? My problem was that everything went. I had three email accounts set up, all downloading emails every hour. Then, one day I went into the email app and there were no accounts at all! I had to set it all up from scratch again.
I hear there are better email apps available for Android, so I'll probably switch to one of those soon.

Hi,
I bought a Galaxy S on Orange UK in July. I'm having the same problem as 1. quite consistenly now.
I thought it might be related to the green power battery saver app I had installed, but i've removed this and still having the problem.
I'm using the phone in several central London locations so I think it's unlikely to be a problem with the data network.
Any suggestion would be welcome since I'm often without data.
Thanks
Nik
ive 1 and 3 but very rarely so far
rebooting fixes it for me
running froyo jp3
for email i use K9, it's almost the same as the integrated mail, only much better (PUSH imap)

I'm actually getting this happen a lot now. It seems to be getting worse, which makes me think it might be a hardware fault. I generally lose my data connection once or twice a day minimum, but some days the phone is virtually unusable.
I have found that it's more likely to happen after using Wi-Fi, so my other thought is that when coming out of Wireless mode, the phone may not switch the normal 3G/HSDPA data connection back on. Most of the time I can fix this by putting the phone into flight mode and then back out, but sometimes it needs a complete reset.
The other problem I've noted with the data connection is that sometimes it seems to rapidly switch between HSDPA and 3G - the data icon at the top of the screen keeps going from '3G' to 'H' then back again. I guess it has something to do with signal quality but it only seems to happen when the phone is showing a good signal strength (four bars). The problem I've found when this happens is that it virtually locks up any ongoing data transfers, making it impossible to download a webpage or check my emails. Strangely the only way I've really found to stop this happening is to move somewhere where my signal strength is weaker, such as indoors, which then seems to make the phone stop attempting to use HSDPA. I can't find a way to switch off HSDPA from within the phone's settings while leaving 3G on.
I really am now finding that using this phone is an increasingly frustrating experience. I've found even more weird faults, such as sometimes my text conversations show the wrong people's names up against them, and then my replies go to the wrong people. It's like an insane, shiny mess of a phone!

I am indeed experiencing same problems above..it just drive me crazy with a need of complete reset everyday..
turning on n off flight mode won't change anything..
I really hope someone can bring a miracle to solve this problem..
I'm on XXJPC
setting the APN parameter(Setting-->Wireless and network-->Mobile Networks-->Access Point Names-->New APN) to 2G only seems to solve the 'lost data connection' problem..
I am connected 24/7 now..
Give a try guys!

[Q] Random Internet Connectivity Issues on 3G

I surely can't be the only one having this issue. It doesn't seem to be related to any particular firmware, as its been an issue ever since I got the phone, and I've since had quite a few different FW on it. Someone I spoke to on another forum with an SGS said theirs did this as well...
Basically, I can be happily surfing away, and then randomly, a page will not load - "Web page could not be loaded" message. Refreshing does not work. At best, turning the APN off or switching to Airplane mode and then back on seems to fix it most of the time. At other times, a full restart of the phone is required.
Most of the time this will happen once or twice in the course of a day, but today it happened on several occasions and it's getting annoying. I had to switch to GSM today for several hours - though that could have been my network provider, but its strange how other Vodafone users in my office were having no issues at the same time I was having issues, even when using the same APN settings.
Any ideas? This is quite a frustrating bug at times.
Unfortunately I can only be here for you , cause this is also happening to me. It is extremely annoying. I did not try the Flight mode switch though, I always had to restart my phone to fix it.
Tried a new rom with updated modem file? Could help

stick to only WiFi or only 3G
you will get those hic ups when the phone is changing between WiFi & 3G
it goes to either side depending which one has a stronger signal
it will have preferences for WiFi over 3G
WiFi is not as stable as 3G from personal experience, so i turn off WiFi and use 3G most of the time

Are Wifi Issues Hardware or Software Related?

Hi everyone,
I got my Nexus 10 a week and a half ago, and, for the most part, have been loving it. However, I've been having some annoying wifi issues. Every once in a while, the connection will go from 3-4 bars to no bars (but still connected) or disconnected completely. Sometimes this happens over and over in a short period of time (10-20 minutes), and sometimes it happens once and doesn't come back for a while. This happens on both my home's wifi and my university's wifi. I've been looking around the forums, and it seems like some other people are having similar issues. My question is: has it been determined whether this is a hardware or software issue? Should I RMA the device (I have a couple days left to do this)? Thanks!
Edit: I've also been running into problems with streaming video from YouTube and Netflix. It'll load the video fine for the first 5-10 minutes, but then it will stop to buffer every 5-10 seconds (in the YouTube app) or become low-resolution and pixelated (in Netflix). This also occurs on both my home and university WiFi, and both have download speeds of 15-20 Mbps. I've tried clearing the cache for both apps, which does nothing.

I'd say they are software, since I have more coverage of the wifi and I didnd't see any lose of signal, however on 4.2.1 I was losing the signal every 2 min or less.

Are you on 4.2.2 now? Do the WiFi drops persist after the update from 4.2.1?

Yeah, I'm on 4.2.2 as well, and I still have all sorts of WiFi problems. I'd like to get a little more info on this. Does anyone else still have WiFi dropouts on 4.2.2? And does anyone have any insight on the video streaming issues? It might just be due to my fluctuating WiFi connection, but I'm wondering if it is a separate issue.

I'm on 4.2.2 and my WiFi issues just started. It's driving me so crazy that I wiped and went to an older Rom with no luck. Hoping it might be my router so gonna try and test on another unit next.
I used to have wifi drops, and there is a couple large threads here already on this issue. But I managed to fix my wifi stability by changing router settings. I had the same thing of complete drops where the wifi disconnects completely every so often. It would happen at random, sometimes every 20-30 seconds, sometimes every couple minutes, other times 10-15 minutes between drops, a few times 3-4 hours between a dropout. It happens on other Android devices I own too though, so it isnt exactly a problem with the Nexus 10 exclusively. it took a LOT of work to finally find the settings that work, but I finally did it and now all Android devices I own are perfectly fine on wifi.

To be honest noone should have to change router settings, I have 3 Android phones, nexus 7, laptop and Xbox 360 connected all at the same time and still the only thing to lose a signal is this 10 inch slab. It's ridiculous.
Considering selling it already after 3 weeks.

Nexus 10 Wifi stays connected but stops working

Hey guys,
I've had this problem for a while, so I'll try to keep the post as short as possible with as much info as I can.
For the last 6 months or so, the internet on my Nexus 10 frequently cuts out. The wifi will remain connected, but any app accessing the internet will time out. I only use the tablet for Reddit/email/youtube, and it's rendered useless because threads will load forever on reddit, youtube barely works, etc. I've reformatted the tablet at least a dozen times trying different things to fix the internet, it's so bad that on the initial setup, where you enter your Google Email/Password, it'll time out authenticating 10-20 times before it goes through. I tried to download Hearthstone yesterday, but the download would stop at some stage and just sit there till I cancelled it and started over. The Wifi works perfectly well on all other devices on my network (including nexus 4 and nexus 5).
When I first got it, I installed Cyanogenmod, and had no problems (but I didn't like it). After a year or so I went back to stock android, and that is when the wifi problems started.
Device:
Nexus 10 - Lollipop 5.0.1 - No Root(currently)
What I've tried:
Multiple factory resets.
Reinstalling with ADB.
Using Clockworkmod to clear all the caches and reinstalling.
Using Nexus Root Toolkit to wipe and reinstall.
Changing multiple settings on my modem (belkin surf N), like only broadcast n network, changing channels, and many other things.
Installing a pingmeter app to constantly ping the router every second.
There was a thread on these forums about rooting and commenting out a line in the hosts file, something like com.android.play or something of that sort, but it wasn't in my hosts file, only 127.0.0.1 and nothing else.
Calling Google Tech support, there only suggestions were to try booting in safe mode, and to restart my router...
And probably a few other things, since I've tried so many times to find some way to resolve the issue.
I've Googled everything I can think of, joined random IRC's to try and get support, asked on Reddit, etc. Still no luck.
Thanks in advance for any help.
I been on lollipop for a while now but notice each day the wifi speeds get worse and worst. Dont know what's going but I notice alot of people complaining about wifi after installing lollipop.

Network issues (Data)

I'm experiencing issues with the network, I often have to go to plane mode then disable it to get my connection back (I always have the 4G logo on screen, but internet pages won't load, facebook either, well everything) I'm seeing posts about the WiFi issue, but nothing about this, am I the only one experiencing this ? It occurs every 5 minutes or so, pretty annoying when you are in the middle of a youtube video or so..)
Thank you in advance !
I could say I have the same issue.
I realize this post is 2 months old but I also have this exact same problem. Data on WiFi works perfectly fine. On actual mobile data though it works great for a long period of time (hours - days) then suddenly gets horrible. Disabling and re-enabling data seems to fix it most of the time, then it works great again for a good while.
Would this indicate a software glitch? I've been wondering if I should try some custom ROMs. Or would it be a problem with the physical antenna or data module in the phone?
I'm on the verge of sending it back under warranty but if it's software maybe something else can be done to fix.
