[Q] keyboard and music player from different o.s - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how can i get the keyboard and music player from other o.s versions?
I have a defy, red lens, was running gingerbread using MS2Ginger 3.0 o.s from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140839
i loved the keyboard and music player from that o.s, now i'm running CM9-NIGHTLY-121118-Defy+ , how can i get the keyboard and the music player from that o.s and install in on my current rom?

Let's just try extracting the apks from that rom's zip and install it like normal.

you can't use moto keyboard on AOSP. I've tried it in there past.

there has to some way..... i really liked that keyboards predictive text way better than the keyboard i have now....plus it saved my commonly used words where i could just press space and it would fill in words without even typing.
i mean coz it is a motorola phone after all...so why cant i get the moto keyboard

Try using SwiftKey Keyboard from the PlayStore. It's just as good if not better.

i don't know which libs it needs and if the app looks for them on AOSP. Its not easy to port it.
It's a Motorola Phone but the ROM you use is not from Motorola, that keyboard is a part of it, you can't just rip it of! It will die without the Blood! ( That was random! )

i tried copying some apk files over from the system/app folder from that rom, put it in my phones system app folder, restarted , it said android is updating but when i check the keyboard its still the same one from the CM9-NIGHTLY-121118-Defy+ rom.... would it be possible to upload the MS2Ginger 3.0 rom so someone could look at it and maybe figure out how???
Just a side note , that MS2Ginger 3.0 rom was what i was told to use to upgrade my defy to defy+ official rom from a tutorial vid on youtube

i found the music player but its the original one from regular defy with froyo...the other one was much better as it provided artist info , tour dates, dicography, list of music vids of the band...etc, detailed stuff of the music on your phone which is why i liked it so much

Give me following files from ms2g
LatineIME.apk from /system/app

[Q] CM6 Keyboards?

Is there any keyboard that will actually work, that i can calibrate and it wont freeze when im typing fast.
I put HTC_IME mod keyboard and it was alright until it froze constantly, swype requires me to look at the screen and the " android keyboard" is simply horrible.
can anyone link me to a keyboard similar to 2.1 that actually works for CM6?
Thank you

Smart Keyboard (Pro Version) is the best I've found so far. Try the free version and upgrade if you like it to get T9 capability. Can you post the apk file for that HTC_IME mod? I'd like to try that out!
@ Puffdaddy_d ; i'd be glad to if i still have it in my sd
And thanks ill try it, where can i get it ? ( too lazy to search or anything haha )
edit: nevermind found it in market

I wonder if that HTC keyboard mod is really designed for the CDMA hero running froyo? It FC's the moment I try to load it. That sounds more like a complete incompatibility issue rather than being just "buggy". Do you know where you got it from?
My friend has database filled with apps and he put it on my phone via adb, it works just buggy actually.

Just tried installing this using an install manager instead of adb push and it's working flawlessly so far! I've got my HTC Keyboard BACK!!!
Too bad I can't get my $4 back from the market...
Better Keyboard works great. I think its 2 bucks on the market
try SwiftKey Beta, it's free and actually works on CM6 (I'm using it now!)

I love froyo!!!

Just had to throw that out there. i am so glad i waited for this instead of jumping ship to the Evo.
I love it too as of now. Just 2 hours since I flashed. Will check back the forum if there are some problems. .

Compared with DI18, you lose the stock Android music app and it's replaced with a touchwiz one. I deleted the music player from the /system/app folder and installed "Android Music" (based off Android 2.3 music player) from the Market.
The stock Android keyboard dictionary doesn't work, fixed that by downloading Gingerbread keyboard from the Market and deleting the stock keyboards from the /system/app folder.
Stock web browser is horribly buggy. I deleted it and installed Dolphin Mini.
It's really fast as far as I've tested.
I've been quite pleased thus far as well. I already found the Epic (even on 2.1) to be snappier than any non-dual core 2.2+ device I've fiddled with. This just makes it that much more smooth/powerful.
Are there any UI differences? Ie, Touchwiz launcher, lock screen, pop up menus, etc?

Yeah you just named like 85% of the apps I use and deleted them. I would do this as well, but I don't know how... yet, I would need a painfully detailed guide or a 4 min or less youtube video showing me ( I'm a visual learner that's how I learned to root and crap). Ill have to do some digging in the forum, wiki and youtube on how todo what you did. Thanks for the heads up, rather prepare before updating and rooting than update and root and not be prepared.

After I did the viper guide on how to reset your gps (it's a taxing guide) it's been good on dk28. But that's good to know that they've improved that which should have been fixed a ****le ago.

There are a lot of differences. Can't think of them all off the top of my head but here are a few. The settings icons are in color. There is a new messenger app. The lock screen is the same. The answer screen is the same. You can modify the home screen (add, remove rearrange and so on). You can modify the apps section icons. Color scheme on popups and menu items are better IMO. You can modify the tray icons. Media player is TW3 now.
I was really hoping for one of the other touchwiz lockscreens. Do we at least get music controls on the lock screen?

The Captivate has the puzzle-piece lock screen. Not sure about music controls on it, but it's a bit of a different look/feel than the generic "slide up to unlock" one we have.
Now that I got the compass fixed I'm 95% happy with Froyo. But I could punch a Samsung developers mother in the face for STILL not having a working line out on the media dock.

[Q] Inaccurate keyboard

Hi guys, great forum with some great tips.
Just got my xperia play and love it to bits.
Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this but I find the keyboard very inaccurate and slow to respond.
When I compare it to my previous Iphone and HTC desire it seems poor.
Any suggestions for tweeking or any options for downloading another keyboard.
Thanks in advance
Chris
Swype
Takes a bit of getting used to swyping but you can also just use it normally to type and its much more accurate than the stock keyboard
im having the same issues , i tried gingerbread keyboard lite which was much more accurate but i was a constant running process in the backgroung using around 30mb , i wish there was a way to edit the stock xperia play keyboard i.e button size height and load a custom user dictionary, yes there are other keyboards like smart, better or swype but really sony should update / fix the stock one.
anyone know if once youve installed a 3rd party keyboard can you safely remove the stock one if rooted and not encounter any problems ?.......
SwiftKey is better to use then the stock keyboard. It just takes a bit of time to get use to.

How's the consensus on HTC_IME keyboard?
I remember it was all the rage when the X10 was released but I haven't been annoyed with the stock keyboard (yet) to give it a try.

I personally hate the htc keyboard..I always used alternate keyboards when I had my HTC.
I use swiftkey, while a tad too busy for my taste, it works damn well once you set it up to your liking. The arrow keys make me not miss my trackpad, and the numberpad-style number page is awesome.
I started using one of the Iphone keyboards.
Find it much better though still not as good as my Iphone.

Swype is amazing !!

I just installed Swype and am using it for the first time. I am so impressed that I needed to make a post about it.
The thing is freaking amazing. Seriously good.
Anyone else using it at the mo?
Yep... It's installed out of the box on galaxy s series handsets, but I love it and can barely use a standard keypad anymore so I got the beta for my cm installation..

Used to use it on my Galaxy S but not a fan tbh, tried it on my play and still MUCH prefer Swiftkey X, Swiftkey X is easily the best Keyboard for Android
I don't see it in the market. I see SMS to swipe, Word Swide and Gem Swype.
is it any of these?
Nope, it's a program on public beta. It's preloaded in the Samsung Android phones. Here you can download it: http://swypeinc.com/ After downloading the installer you just have to follow the steps it tells you.
It's mighty awesome, enough that Sony is including a Swype-lookalike (T9) in the 2.3.4 update in October. You can find similar keyboards in the market like SlideIT keyboard.

I am now of the opinion that all swipe-like keyboards are vastly superior by default after using Swype. The difference is as large as texting on the old numeric keypads versus typing on a qwerty keyboard.
Absolutely no way could I go back to a bog standard qwerty touchscreen keypad with no swipe feature !

Tried beta 1, then switched to swype and stayed with swype.
no idea why but it sometimes lags and the words aren't really accurate either.. adding a new word to the user dictionary is a PITA..

[question] To change the keyboard layout from QWERTY to Dvorak with dock used?

I am actually use QWERTY more than Dvorak but I just want to practice using Dvorak.
the soft keyboard can be changed using hacker's keyboard or Swiftkey but I can't sure how I can change the hardware keyboard layout(except buying a new one).
There are so many language options given with the default Asus' keyboard and CM9 keyboard but which one should I select?
BTW, can I just remove the android keyboard and Asus' keyboard if I use the dock? I'm currently using megatron v1.1.6.
Thank you very much.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium HD app
I really wouldn't remove all soft keyboards, in case of nuclear apocalypse (your dock stops working ) you'd need it. As far as changing to dvorak the key mappings will be in your /system/ folder editable with a test editor, you'd have to find one someone's done or do it yourself, or perhaps an app exists.
I will keep using the software keyboards but I have so many in my systems. I I just wonder if it is safe to remove the Asus 'one. To thanks
