Hello, I got my nexus 4 three days ago and I'm facing a problem.
I can't seem to get realtime whatsapp notifications and when I go to the play store or YouTube my WiFi drops and it says connection time out retry and whatsapp messages take forever to receive. Is this a known bug in the nexus 4? Or should O replace my phone and get a new nexus with guarantee.
I'm currently using the march 18 Paranoid Android with Stock PA kernel, I'm not using any battery saver app (I'm using the same apps that I had on my S2) and none of them does anything to WiFi.
I flashed PA too fast after I got the phone but I think I was having this issue out of the box. I haven't changed DPI either.
Thanks in advance.
I tried changing kernel and nothing. Anyone? /:
There is a thread about it in general. But basically known bug, when on wifi and your phone screen is off (in deep sleep) you get delayed notifications or no notifications till you wake the device up.
In the android development section there is a kernel that fixes it for most (myself included.) on my phone and out so can't give links.

I posted my problem in PA thread and no1 seems to be having that problem like me, shouldn't franco's kernel have this issue fixed? Is that the only kernel that fixes that
I agree that it seems odd more people aren't complaining about it. I only really noticed it when I tried to use voip and the phone wouldn't ring when the screen was off.
So far only the one kernel I told you about fixes it. However Google is aware and working on a fix so in time all kernels will be fixed

Are the delayed notifications only a problem on wifi? What about when using HSPA+/3G?

I have a weird problem with handcent. It keeps the pop up running in memory till i read the text, (i.e) If i don't read the text for 6 hours, Handcent drains the battery for six hours.
Yesterday i had got a text just after i slept , i woke up after 6 hours and found that handcent had drained 40% of the battery. And the "keep awake time" of handcent was 6 hours.
I know this issue persists on other phones also,
Do anyone else have this issue on your Nexus s, I had this problem on my stock gingerbread as well, I rooted my phone and flashed oxygen and still the problem exists.
I am using Go sms atm. But i really like handcent , Anyone knows a fix for this.
+1 using galaxy s

I would suggest disabling the pop up completely till the app is updated and fixed.

This problem has been there for a long time, There have been many updates and yet handcent hasn't fixed the issue. Very few android phones experience this problem.
i started noticing the same starting about 3 days ago on mine.
Hey guys, sometimes Whatsapp messages show up late. (ive noticed this happens only when screen off)
For example, when I unlock phone, after several minutes I get the Whatsapp notification, I go in, but message shows it was recieved 5-10-15 minutes ago.. Sometimes the clock shows when I want to reply..
No problems with screen on.
Any clue? Sync is on

It happens in both, wifi or Mobile data.. So service provider is dismissed..
I think there must be a config

Most of the time this is because the Servers cant handle the amount of messages being send via WhatsApp. So there is nothing you can really do about it.

This never happened with my s2, which I had until Saturday.. that's why I think is something with the N4 config
I noticed this past Saturday problems sending and receiving messages via Whatsapp, on both iPhone and Nexus 4, but not via stock MMS apps. So it appears that there was an issue on Whatsapp side.
I'm noticing the same thing on my nexus 4 and I'm pretty sure it's not caused by traffic load on the whatsapp servers. On my GSII, messages came through straight away when the phone was sleeping.
On my nexus 4, if the screen is off, messages don't come through until I turn the screen on.
It seems to me that Android 4.2 handles wakelocks differently to ensure the device sleeps without interruption. That's great for battery life, but seems to impairing the ability to receive IMs.

Exactly... It's annoying, since whatsapp is not catalogued as a battery drain or similar..

not a full fix
i tried the new app and while it does drastically reduce the delay its still not perfect
i still experience about 1-2 minutes delay in receiving messages
in any case big improvement
Any notifications I get such as New messages on what app or Facebook posts only Notify me the instance I wake the device. This only happens when connected to wifi. I tried multiple access points too. This never happened to me when I was running a month old cm10.1 rom but now any rom I flash has this problem. Currently running AOKP. It's so annoying when your phone doesn't vibrate when you get a new message until you actually turn it on. Any suggestions?

Make sure WiFi sleep policy is set to always.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Yeah it is lol
It seems to be fine on latest nightly of cm still happens on other roms though
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Are the roms with the problem using a custom kernel/boot.img ?
Back when it worked a month ago, I was using francos kernel. Now I'm running cm with whatever kernel it comes with and it seems to be working. AOKP or PA still have the lag issue.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
For me I've noticed push notifications don't work on any kernel that has the wakelock fixes when using WiFi with the screen off on any message type app I have tried, though gmail does work. Older custom kernels or the original kernel work fine.
Maybe your error is similar?
You might be right. Any idea if the kernel for PA or AOKP include these fixes? And does Franco kernel include these fixes?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Franco kernel introduced the fixes at much the same time as all the other kernel devs, you would to look at the respective change logs to see at what revision the fixes were implemented.
With franco kernel r34 notifications are fine over wifi.
Regards.
It's known issue, not a kernel/rom, Google's fault!

No its not, stop saying it everywhere. Original boot.IMG and other kernels pre wake lock fix work fine. I was a using message apps faultlessly for a whole month before kernels with the wake lock fixes came out

Sorry to say but Franco himself said this was Nexus 4's fault...
Don't care what franco said, with non wake lock fix kernel my message apps work fine with wifi/screen off, with wakelock fix kernels they don't... black and white. And it's not a wifi problem here because gmail syncs work fine all the time whatever kernel.
How do you account that i used them fine for @ month ? and still can if i flash a non wakelock fix kernel... but i'm guessing franco made no such absolute as you claim.
It's not Googles fault. Stock rom works flawlessly so does the latest cm build.

FYI. whatsapp been lagging on my iPhone 4 for a while too actually on 5.1.1 (i think)
It doesn't lag at all on cm or stock

Uh, yeah it is. The WiFi driver cannot offload ARP broadcast requests, so Google chose to have the phone disregard ARP requests, most likely to reduce power usage. Have you ever had a device that can't be pinged when in standby? Now you know the reason.
The driver will be updated in a future release. You can sidestep this problem on a dd-wrt router by assigning a static IP addresses to the device.
If you receive emails always on time, then you are lucky that you have a router whose ARP cache timeout is unusually long, at least longer than Google's heartbeat which is set at 15 minutes. Using mobile data does not apply to any of the above.

hi,
just wondering if anyone else has the same problem that i have.
basically i have a delay in a few of my notification such as facebook, whatsapp, twitter. for exmaple i send a message to my friend on whatsapp, i then press the power button and not recieve a response or anything... but like 15 mins later, i recieve a whatsapp notification and see that my friend has sent several messages while my phone was "asleep" plus all my notofications come at the same time. so lets say i receive the whatsapp notification 15 mins later, my twitter notifications would appear along with my gmail notification etc...
could anyone help
It is a known issue of the nexus 4. There is a kernel fix but battery drain is quite affected.
That issue only happens when you are on wifi, test it.
Google is supposed to fix it in next releases... but who knows?
Here u have the fix

I can also confirm that this is a bug in 4.2.2 and not in 4.2.1.
I can't wait for 4.2.3. Google botched it with 4.2.2.

Ever since the Google i/o update for google search I'm frequently experiencing a "no connection" bug with google now. The rest of the services works fine but Google Now can't connect to the internet. Rebooting fixes the issue but it reappears after some time. Am i the only one with that?
It happened to me once about a day ago, but that *might* have been because my internet was throwing a hissy-fit.
Out of curiosity, what was the Google i/o update?

They've added reminder settings and some new cards. Go to settings/cards to see what the new ones are
I'm having the same issue. Since the update, Google Now losses connection at least every other day until I turn off my WiFi/mobile data and turn it back on.
Assume a big fix week be on the cards (excuse the pun) but it's a pain in the meantime...

I had this problem show up randomly after a few months without issues. Wiping the Google search app data solved it for a day or two then it came back.
I finally solved the problem by simply wiping the Google search app data, then turning Google Now OFF then ON. 6 weeks without a problem so far.

Same here. Not sure when it started, but it seems to be ROM independent, I had it on PA, PACman, Smooth, and now on Vanilla Rootbox. All clean installs/full wipes. Drives me crazy.

This is happening with me too on my Nexus 7 with 4.3. Tried turning Flight Mode off and on but this didn't help. It appears to be intermittent and can go away without intervention.
