Did a search but didn't come up with anything recent. Has something changed recently with the play store and renting/buying movies when rooted?
I know in the past, Google has taken the 'privilege' of renting movies away if you were rooted, but then I thought they eventually changed that and were allowing rooted users to rent/buy again.
I rented some movies while stock, recently unlocked boot loader and flashed my own custom kernel and rooted. Stock ROM, just rooted with custom kernel. Suddenly I can't rent movies, and could of sworn I did rent one right after rooting and testing the kernel, but now movies don't even show up in the store, and play movies app just opens the market, where there is now no movies section?
Edit-weird, about 25 minutes after posting this I opened up play store and there's movies back. Odd, but at least there is no issue.

has anyone booted up a new nexus on an unsupported country? what i mean is for countries where there is no play movies, books, and magazines.
just curious if i will get it.
someone is bringing me a nexus from the US to Asia.
I would assume that seeing how your Play Store doesn't support it, you won't get it. The credit I'm not sure about though.
That is, unless you use a proxy or some other means to enable it so that you can get it. You may need to permanently use the VPN/proxy to watch the movies or read the magazines though. However once Play Music is enabled, you can use it anywhere without a proxy/VPN, you can't buy songs though.
Play music isn't supported too. But since I was in the US when it launched ..I can access it here.
So I'm thinking it may work but I won't be able to buy other content.

In the UK we can't get them but, a little fix is out there to allow you to get them all.
I tried it on my GS2 and it works.
Here is the link DroidVPN
Enjoy

Hmm, perhaps though I don't believe this works for Play Movies, Books, Magazines, TV Shows etc. but I may be wrong.
Could also just use Titanium Backup to defrost apps that are built-in (Wallet, Play Magazines, etc.) and use them. Thats' what I did.
I have had my nexus 7 since Friday. I hadn't planned on rooting it because jelly bean is extremely nice and I wanted to be able to watch Play Store movies without being denied for DRM issues as i had been before on rooted devices.
After setting up my tablet, I began download the Transformers move to my device. Just for giggles I decided to try the same on my rooted GNex with Razors Jelly 2.6 on it. The movie streamed with no issues and downloaded as well. Playback worked with both methods. I have not tried this with any other play store video content as of yet.
I guess my question(s) is/are, what has changed? Is this a jelly bean phenomenon? Does the Play Store no longer look for root? Has anyone with a rooted nexus 7 tablet been able to do the same with any other video content from Play? I know, that's a lot of questions and I'm sure that I'll get blasted for not searching, but after a dozen failed searches I could not find the answers that I was looking for.

a few weeks ago google enabled the play store movies to now work with root.
So you can now be rooted and have full access to the play store. I'm assuming it was partly due to the Nexus 7's pending release.
Now many other services such as Ultraviolet with Flixster still do look for root and you'll have to use a temp unroot to use them.

Thanks for that. I want to read up on the subject. Interestingly enough my TWC TV app is listed as incompatible with the 7. It worked with the tab 2 7.0. Now all I need to do is head over to the Galaxy Nexus thread and find out which temp unroot to use that doesn't totally bork my phone!

i use Voodoo OTA RootKeeper app from the play store. don't know if it works with the N7 though.
On my galaxy nexus it's perfect. disable root, ultraviolet works, re-enable and back to root like nothing happened.

I'm running Razors Jelly. I don't remember if I tried that one or not. I tried two or three and decided that I never wanted to try again.

Temp unroot isn't guaranteed, the Barclays banking apps for instance still refuse to work even with temporary unrooting.

My issue was that root never came back. One question, will I still be able to boot into cwm to restore a backup if things go wrong? I want smart enough to think of that last time around.

thats strange, Ive rooted and wiped over and over again the last few days and all of my freebies are still available to me
When I tried Google Play Movies on my rooted HTC Rezound, it wouldn't work, because it was rooted. But voodoo rootkeeper fixed that with a one click temporary unroot.
So when I rooted the tab 7.7 I figured I'd have to do the same thing. Funnily enough, it just worked anyways. That is until about a month ago. I had rented multiple movies over August and September. i bought Prometheus the day it came out and watched it fine. but something happened and starting two weeks ago, Google Play let's me buy or rent movies but only plays the audio. voodoo rootkeeper didn't fix it (the app says it does not work with samsung stuff anyway) but it must be something else since it was working fine while rooted for months.
something must have updated, and it wasn't the google play app as that just updated this week, but hasn't as far as i know in the last months.
anybody else encounter something similar?
Rooted running flashed stock ICS ROM.
Has anyone elses movies box in the play store dissappeared? mine has. but i can still access it on my phone.

Are you abroad at the moment? If you have a wifi only nexus 7 device, market is tailored to each specific country you are accessing the play store through. That could be the reason why you can access it on your phone because you are using a provider from a country that has access to those google features. Not all countries have access to movies or books from the google market.
I am in the UK. i havent changed anything afaik. and the fact that certain things are one phone but not tablet. im rooted and bootloader unlocked using the latest stock build

Odd then. Well if you are up for it, a possible solution to dance around the problem (although it doesn't necessarily solve it...) would be to follow this guide to gain access to those services again: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28259205#post28259205
Your device is already rooted so that saves you one big step. It's simply a way to get around Play store blocks on its features, so it will *maybe* fix your problem since its the Play store that is preventing your device from accessing google movies and books.
I rooted my NP and put Pure Nexus on it. Looks great..but I can't get Netflix to work. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and reflashing GAPPS to no avail. It opens and immediately "Sorry, we could not reach the Netflix service. Please try to restart the application (-116) . I restart it, only for the same thing to happen again. This is really very frustrating. Hoping someone can shed some light on why it's happening. Thanks.
Anyone? One of the reasons I bought a Nexus Player was for Netflix. I have it on my blu-ray player, but I can't really stand the way it looks on there.

I have the same issue on a tablet. I tried team blackouts latest Netflix and that one will install
Netflix just came out blocking it from the Google Play Store if they notice your device is rooted or bootloader unlocked. Currently you should be able to play, they did announce that it will BLOCK playing going forward on rooted unlocked devices. I can't believe it!

Where did they announce they will block playing ? Hopefully magisk hide will fix this issue. I love watching Netflix on my tablets. I'm not going to unroot them for anything.

Mainly heard it on All About Android. It's all over the tech news. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.en...o-longer-available-for-rooted-android-phones/
