[Q] Galaxy S4 vs Others - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Galaxy S4 vs others.
Hey I know there are a few other threads out there like this but they are not really specific enough. I'm torn, I'm going to be buying a new phone in the next month or so and I'm confused as to which phone I should get, I've looked at many comparisons and still can't decide which is the better buy:
Galaxy S4
LG Optimus G Pro
Sony Xperia Z
HTC One(Maybe a little small)
Any thoughts on the matter or feedback would be appreaciated. Thanks. :good:
Note: I do live in Australia so that may affect my choice.

You're on XDA forums, and it's not a place for people who are new to android. You should be able to decide for yourself what features will be more useful to you. If you still can't, at least tell what features draw you on each of the phones.

Tbh, the best for you is to go on a retail store and compare those 4 phones then choose the best for you and the one that will satisfy your needs. It's just a matter of self preference. No need to start a new thread that may attract fanboyism, bashing and flaming wars.

S4
Advantages: Best processor in the pack. Tiny form factor.
Disadvantages: Nothing really, unless you count the plastic body.
Xperia Z
Advantages: Solid build.
Disadvantages: Slowest processor in this bunch (still fast).
HTC One
Advantages: Amazing build quality
Disadvantages: Feels uncomfortable due to excessively angular design.
G Pro
Advantages: Good build quality.
Disadvantages: No stylus.
Personally, I would recommend the S4. It's likely that it will be updated to at least 2 major android versions like what happened with the S2. It has the most battery efficient AND powerful chip around.
EDIT: Is Australia getting the S600 or Exynos Octa version?

I understand this is your opinion but
HTC One is super comfortable according to anyone that owns it, reviewers and users.
Xz is also waterproof which is a good thing and S4 pro is more than powerful.
S IV build quality could definitely be better but im ok with it.
And OP just go to a store like a user mentioned and go see what you like best.

get the htc one if you can stand that ugly logo in front of your face next to the capacitive buttons.

I can confirm for sure that you can fry eggs on the back of the xperia z. After having heating problem with my nexus 4 I thought that was lg's fault but I was wrong, it's the snap dragon s4 pro CPU that has a problem with making devices really hot.
That's why Sony made it waterproof so that you can leave your phone in a cold water jar

Your Question must be asked in Q/A forum buddy.
BTW S4 is the best among all beasts..

Thanks
Woah!! Thanks guys for all your posts. I' m not new to android but I'm still having a tough time deciding. Thank you again for the help and I hope I'll be getting my awesome new phone soon.

Samsung Galaxy S IV. Most awaited.

I also live in Australia and having a tough time deciding between GS4 or HOne. I am with Vodafone. Which is Vodafone getting for 3g. I really hope Exynos octa.

Sad....
I just read an article on Gizmodo: http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2013/03/unofficial-list-says-australias-getting-the-quad-core-s4/
It shows that Australia might only get the Snapdragon 600 S4.

HTC no external card slot as far as I know, and lower spec camera. Besides slightly slower processor etc that's enough for me to go the GS4

This or the One X, please help me decide

Hey everyone, first off I want to apologize for creating a topic like this. I have been reading up on both phones through website, reviews and topics here on XDA. I just cant seem to make up my mind.
The one X has no removable battery when the battery is 1800Mah which is pathetic considering I am running a 1900Mah in my outdated HTC Sensation. This is a big downside to me; the S3 has a 2100Mah battery which is removable which is a big plus. I was looking at both battery life threads for the international versions and both seem good though. Could you guys possibly comment on this?
The cpu and gpu's of both phones are also interesting. The Exynos seems better then the Tegra 3 and coming from a S3 powered Sensation I do not want another laggy phone.. Please comment on this, possibly a link to another topic if it was made before.
Memory is not a big issue for me, 32gb is plenty.
I heard that the screen on the One X is better and easier on battery life, is this true?
Last thing is development; I love flashing new Roms and have been spoiled with the Sensations awesome developers. Does the international S3 have great developers and if so which Roms are the most popular?
Thanks a ton guys!
Samsung galaxy s3 is the best phone

Had US and international one x. Now have the international gs3. Aside from some camera features. The Gs3 is better. The multi taking issues on the One X kill that phone imho

I came from the one x international. SG3 is better, the battery on the one x was a huge deal breaker for me, was pretty bad.

If price isn't a concern, get the s3. Battery life is almost double that of the one x and the Cpu and gpu are faster. Combined with removable battery and sd card, it's a no brainer.
However if price is a concern, get the one x. It's about 20% cheaper. But it does have some serious problems with heat; the battery will frequently reach over 55 celcius and go into "overheat" status, potentially reducing the life of it.

Wow, that link has alleviated my fears of lackluster developer support thank you.
ratchetjaw you speak of multitasking, I understand that the S3 Lte has 2gb of ram, do you feel this is a necessary advantage? So much so that it is better to wait until the fall to purchase a new phone, when they have quad and 2gb?
Also, the lack of Lte on the international version; I myself never really cared for data speeds as 4g is fast enough for me. Do you deem the loss of this and a Gb of ram justifiable for the quad core Exynos?
Thanks!
Ask the same question in the one X forum, you will get a different response.
They are both excellent phones.
Considering software issues and heat are now resolved with the new base, the battery is also much better on the new kernel.
Software can be changed, the only things you can't change are the screen and the looks.
One X wins on both counts in my opinion, and I own both phones!
Plus the tegra 3 processor has a dedicated gaming development and is gonna get play station games shortly.
The new Google nexus 7 tablet is a tegra 3 processor, which means more tegra games are coming for sure. Also there probably is a good reason why Google are releasing their flagship tablet with nvidia cpu, versus the exynos.
In summary both are excellent phones but it comes down to personal preference and what looks visually more pleasing to your eyes.

Before the s3 got released I was going to get the one x but had a play with both phones in a shop and the s3 seamed to run better so got a s3
Hi I had the HTC one x for about 2 months I fought it was I great phone till I started to use it. The battery last me 6 hrs. I changed from iphone 4 to it. It was such a let down. Sold It and got a s3 best phone out of the 2. My s3 battery last me 15hrs. I stream and surf the net a lot fans the s3 last me 15hrs or if I not stream or surf it can last me about 18 hrs.
So just go for the s3 DON'T BUY HTC ONE X

samsung galaxy s3 It works like a charm and my friend has the htc one x and it works good but the screen is very sensitive at the sides. So i have chosen for the s3 and till now i still dont have found a bug or something annoying at it
Personnaly, the fact that the S3 has an external sdcard slot made almost the difference so I bought one. But I recently had to buy a one x to and it is much nicier than the s3.
Reviewing their battery life, they are almost equal, even while playing games.

He said he used search, but he still wanted to ask... this is not dev's thread or anything and he asked politely about personal opinions (as it's not correct to just start flaming other's devices, but personal opinions are always all right!) Don't be so rude.
About the phone matter, I was in the situation 3 weeks ago and finally got the S3 and now I'm really happy with it If you come from a Sensation like me you'll go mad with battery life of S3 And not the positive way trust me xD Let me explain to others, Sensation had a TERRIBLE battery indicator, 100% lasted for about 3 hours, then major drain until 70%... 2 hours... 50% in 20 minutes! and so on... good battery life, but horrible indications!
As soon as I got my S3 I was like, damn! this is draining like hell! (80% at 13:00 unpluged at 07:00 with maybe 35 minutes screen...) but if you do the numbers and extrapolate this to a hole day... it comes to 16h and 2.5h screen time even with the poor reception I had!
Good choice for me

[OFF TOPIC] New phone time

With the announcement of the GS4 now here. Im a bite dissapointed how its Soap bar 2.0. I really digged the look of the S2 (candybar). The dilemma is that the GS4 is all i want IN a phone. While the Sony Xperia Z and HTC one look really nice. What do you guys think of the new Galaxy S? I think its a great. Phone which lives up to its Name but i dont Like the look.
Cool story, bro.

I think you should...
I owe SGS II for about 1.5 years. WHen S3 came i Thought 'nice phone', but there was no revolution. 4 core's ok, but i doubt if there's an app that will use them. Camera almost the same as in S2. Bigger screen/ resolution ++. But performance was not so good as I expected. Design was ok for me, but i think material's quality is better in S2. Now S4 came and imho it's very interesting phone, and in June/July I will sell my S2 and buy S4 when the prices will be lower. Overall I like S4 design, it looks niceer than S3 for me, and the performance is really good too(benchmarks), but we'll see how's its real performacnce. The only problem for me may be battery's life. 2600mAh may be too little for 5 inches screen and 8 cores(yeah, i know, only A7 or A15 cores are enabled at the time). TO sum up i think S4 is a great phone, an i'll buy it for sure(after reading a few reviews and testing it a lot). Best regards.

I think only the 1080p screen is enough to make me jump to the S4. Even if it is pentile the pixel density is enough to make it go unnoticed. No more pink spot in the camera. LTE and float touch are a nice addition too.

1. Older and slower CPU! Snapdragon S4 Pro 1.5GHz vs Snapdragon 600 1.9GHz
2. LCD TFT Screen vs. Super AMOLED FulHD Screen
3. OPPO vs.Samsung (this one is actually important when you look for custom ROMs and MODs)
4. Android 4.1 vs. Android 4.2.2 (for now)
5. 2500mAH battery vs 2600mAH battery
You decide....
I love my Oppo Find 5. I love the design, love the complete steel chassis design. No mucking around with plastic or even aluminum. They went straight for steel.
Display is great. Speaker is great. Frankly there is very little negative about the phone.
But it is totally outgunned by S4 at this point. You won't notice much in day to day use now but S4 destroys it in benchmarks.
But Find 5 is special. I am never going to sell this phone just to show people 20 years down the line that someone made phone like this.
It can't compete with S4 or One in pure performance but it puts smile on my face every time I use it. $500 phone with so many things done right.
Totally unfair to put it u up against S4 to be honest.
It is a good phone. Probably better made than One in my book.
From my Galaxy S4, in your face.....
H2H he S4 beats it at everything but looks. On the other hand it's still a very capable phone and at €400 it has an impressive price point in Europe.
Depends how well they have optimised the software on that phone. The S4 Pro on the Nexus 4 literally at the moment offers a much smoother and faster experience than the S4 with an updated CPU.

HTC One vs LG G2

I have a few questions regarding both phones. I have the HTC One right now. Is the difference between the Snapdragon 800 and 600 noticeable? What about the display differences? Which software UI is better and has more features? What about camera software and hardware? Would you recommend upgrading to the G2 or waiting for the next gen of phones?
S800 battery efficient g2 has great standby time screen you could still give to the one ,on software front its no major lag issues ,if you could you can wait for M8☺

Yeah, I can wait for sure. I am in no need for a new phone, but I was just looking to see if the LG G2 is worth the upgrade. The M8 is something that I probably will not buy because HTC is not great with its battery life. I am actually buying an external battery case for it just to cope with the bad battery life.

I have owned both phones. Currently own the G2. There's no noticeable difference between S800 and 600 in day to day usage but there is in gaming since they use different GPUs. Software UI is a matter of preference. I like the look of sense UI better and love blinkfeed but prefer the features LG offers like knock on, slide aside and the customizability. The G2 has definitely the superior camera. I think the HTC One is more fluid though I must say. At this point I would say wait for the next gen, you have a great phone in your possession.

Okay, for the next gen, here are the phones I would look at: Galaxy S5, HTC M8, iPhone 6, Galaxy Note 4. Which one would you go with based off their track record? And could you see Samsung using their 64 bit chipset with 4GB of RAM on the S5 or more likely on the Note IV based off the news reports yesterday?
IMO wait for the next gen. Lg is a fantastic phone but there is no need to upgrade to LG g2 if you already have the one. I think you are better served with waiting until the next gen of phones.

In all honesty, all these 4 devices you mentioned are gonna be insane. I can't wait to see what happens. The Galaxy S5 is gonna be insanely powerful and probably will have that 64bit chipset you're talking about. The HTC M8 is gonna be based off the One but better with better internals. Quality at it's best. The iPhone 6 is expected to have a larger display. I'm really looking forward to that since it's their "major upgrade year". Then the Note 4 which will be the most powerful device of them all but i personally am no longer a fan of HUGE display. You can add on that list the LG G3. I'm currently using the G2 and I love it, eager to see what LG is gonna bring. 2014 is gonna be one heck of a year. If I had to choose a device right now it'll be the Galaxy S5. I think Samsung understand that customers want a phone with a nice design and choice of material. And I think touchwiz is gonna be revamped.

Yeah, I think I would agree with you on the S5. I was thinking that can be my item I buy for myself around my birthday since I could scrap money together by then to put a downpayment w/ T-Mobile USA or someone else. The iPhone needs more RAM to truly take advantage of its current chipset. The Note is impressive, but the device is going to get blown out in a few months.
I got my G2 a few days ago and in very satisfied with it. It's an extreme device for its price. It's crazy to see how fast the development is going but I don't regret getting the g2 so late. Anyway I came from an iPhone 4 so it's a huge upgrade anyway.

Yep. But knowing myself I will own them all.
Samsung MUST succeed with this S5 cause HTC is not playing anymore, they are releasing quality devices from now on. And LG is a great choice for people that don't like Samsung phones so there are more and better choices now then ever before. And the S4 didn't do as good as Samsung anticipated. So they are gonna go big with this S5. It's pretty much a given that it won't be plasticky like before and that performance is gonna be stellar.

My cousin even chose the HTC One over the S4. It just looked like a bigger S3 with a better screen, more bloatware, lag, new software features, etc. I would take a S4 for HTC One trade straight up, but only for resale value, but that's not really something I seek right now since I will probably keep my HTC One regardless of my next phone. I just hope they don't pull the Apple stunt and use the Note III properitary charger and region lock phones. I would also like the S5 to have a good look with metal and still retain the SD card slot. Time will tell in March and then April is the big release month.

What is this Galaxy F? F for Five?
My buddy is upgrading his One with a G2. His notification light is very dim, he blew out the speaker on the One without it even being at max volume, and is just tired of all the mistakes HTC keeps making as a company in general.
I feel bad for him, he was a big HTC fan since the days of the EVO 4G, and I know that feeling, coming from an original Droid myself... Having loyalties to Motorola.
But it's the future now and Samsung has a huge advantage in the mobile world at this point, making them the next Apple. Not being a fan of HTC myself, and getting fed up with Motorola time and again... LG was the most logical step to take. And G2 is a beast of a phone. Last time I checked, it even beat out the Note 3 in benchmarks in AnTuTu. And it gets me through an entire day of pretty intense use. All while still having a beautiful display, super thin bezel, awesome features (such as Knock On), and enough third party development to keep my flashing needs satisfied.

[Q] Nexus 4 vs HTC One X vs Galaxy S3 vs Note 2 vs G Pro vs Xperia ZL in real world

I have only used dumb-phones until now and plan to get a smartphone.
I did a little surfing and found Adreno 320 is better than Mali 400 GPU and Qualcomm Snapdragons are better than Samsung Exynos, right?
But in real world they say Note 2 is considered better phone than Nexus 4. I don't understand this.
Different phones top in different benchmarks, and still some things like display quality are not considered in benchmarks i guess, right?
Now I haven't used any smartphone before, and the I would be using it for gaming or watching videos/movies only most of the time as I'm a student.
Which of these phones that I mentioned (all in 23-29,000 INR range) are better than others in reality?
Those who have used these phones or are techsavy might be able to guide me in making the right choice
Just found S3 in India has different specs than in US, Canada etc.
India: 1.4 Ghz Quad-core Exynos 4412,Mali-400,1GB
US: 1.5 Ghz Dual-core Snapdragon, Adreno 225,2GB
It really depends on your priorities.
You should take by consideration the battery capacity, camera, and other features.
Nexus 4 is not a champion in the last two, its camera relatively sucks, and the battery is not very impressive (for me it's pretty good actually). One of the main advantages of the Nexus 4 is the fast updates compared to other phones. Anything with quad-cores and 2 GB of RAM is more than enough.
HTC One X on the other hand is getting old, even though it has a great look, and a polished UI (Sense 5), and amazing sound (comes with beats audio, and believe me it does make a difference!)
GS3 is a champion, but is getting old too, and soon will run out of updates. Good camera though, and pretty fast.
Note 2 is full-featured, not really a phone though, pretty huge for a one, packs lots of great assets from S-Pen to better camera (than N4). I'd suggest you try it.
Xperia ZL is not a flagship like the others, but has a good look, and great specs. Don't expect fast updates from Sony though.
Note that all those phones are relatively recent, so you won't notice any big differences in the daily performance. And don't forget that you'll eventually buy a cover for your phone, so the size/design won't actually matter.
My advice? Go for the cheapest! you'll end up bricking it anyway if you stick around xda

This made me chuckle.. In all honesty I'd go for a nexus 4 there's not a reason not to go for it
think about it.. S3 is getting old and thus will stop being supported by newer android updates.. The note 2s downside is the size many people hate the size and its uncomfortable in the pocket put a case on it and its not only big but its bulky.
Sony has never had great support by android and usually gets left behind quite early after release... The nexus 4 shatters the s3 I had a s3 and its not on the level of the n4 and its obvious when using it.. Id say ur only choice is nexus 4 or note 2 between the phones listed.. IMO nexus 4 is one of the best phones out even right now.. Do some more research and you'll find your own choice :good:
Forgot about the HTC Onex.. HTC is a great manufacturer and makes top quality devices but it also doesn't compare with nexus 4.. My T-Mobile s2 was neck and neck with the htc Onex

forget one X. totally outdated, even xperia ZL others are way better in that range.
1st you have to decide what size you are comfortable with.
Phablet size - Note 2, G pro
Phone size - N4, S3(23k) - higher range, N5 (30k)
If you choose any of above you wont be making bad decision. All are good performer in real life with couple of adv and dis adv with all.
so 1st go to some store and actually hold and decide size phablet or phone later we can discuss choice among those
I love my nexus 4, faster than anything, google support, i bought this phone in nov 2013, quite expensive from flipkart at 24500 INR, but still satisfied, s3 looks like grand and all cheap models of samsung, samsung actually sucks with its touchwiz laggy utility, note 2 is so big, its actually not a phone it is a tab, nexus 4 is comparatively small in size yet powerful, looks great with a bumper cover, i have a white one, after a lot of research i bought this phone and its great
