Hello XDA,
As battery life is something people owning a Nexus 4 tend to struggle with in general, I've been wondering wether it affects my phone if I use my Nexus 7's (stock) charger for charging my Nexus 4. (As I would not want to receive a decreased battery life in the future due to using it) I've done a quick search on the forums and have found some threads, which in the end still contain a lot of controversy. Perhaps anyone with a good understanding of this can enlighten me?
Thanks in advance!
The N7 charger will not perform any differently than the N4 charger. Phone determines the load, and the current that it draws.
Well I am inclined to believe you, but why wouldn't LG choose to accompany the phone with a more powerful charger to begin with? As the stock charger from the N4, is rather... slow?

Hi I recently bought a Nexus 4 16GB from Google Play in the UK. It's been working fine but in the last few days when I connect my phone with the official charger (the one that came in the box) the touchscreen begins to act weird and buggy. More specifically it becomes less sensitive and doesn't function properly. I can scroll down on the app drawer with no problem but scrolling up is extremely slow- its like its scrolling through syrup, same on homescreen. Thinking this was an app or kernel problem I removed an app I thought was causing the issue and reverted kernel back to normal but the problem persists. I now think it may have something to do with the charger being faulty as I am now charging my Nexus 4 with the charger that came with my Nexus 7 and no problems with touchscreen responsiveness or interaction.
Has anyone else had issues with this? as I've seen people have trouble with non standard chargers but I'm using the official one.
Would Google be able to exchange just the charger and not the whole phone package? And is it okay to use my Nexus 7 charger for my Nexus 4?

Yes you can use the Nexus 7 charger. In fact, you can use any Micro usb charger cable to charge your phone. The phone will take in the amount of power it needs. It shouldn't be an issue.
Anyone know what could be causing the touch screen issues when charging. That's what confuses me the most. Could it have something to do with the charger heating up or being faulty?
Thanks for the tip about using my Nexus 7 charger instead.

I know that with some of my older phones, when charging from an inverter that did not stabilize it's output voltage, my touchscreen would do the described. Maybe the charger fluctuates in voltage slightly... This was on my old iPhone 3GS, I can't remember if my Atrix did it... It might not do that on the Nexus

I checked my outlet and tried on other outlets and the current going through is fine.

It would probably be something with the charger output then. Maybe it has to do with amperage output rather then voltage, I know that some people had issues with the stock charger outputing less amperage sometimes making the phone drop to USB mode. IMO the stock charger kinda sucks and its better to just buy another charger and keep the stock one for backup or something
Hello everyone, i've been a lurker for over a year now, primarily at the note 2 forums.
I've recently sold my n-7100, and now i've got a Note 10.1 N-8000. It's great and all, though one gripe I have would be the --SLOW- charging of the thing. Sometimes it'd even drain while being used (akin of other former phone, the n-7000 and it's 0.7 amps charging.)
Cutting it short, i've been using Andreilux's fantastic Perseus kernel for the longest time, and one ingenious feature he included would be the ability to modify the charging rates. Based on my limited knowledge, samsung pretty much bottlenecks this for safety purposes, such as having that 100ma margin thingamajigger when it detects unstable currents, hence lowering the input current. His kernel had the ability to turn that off, and pretty much allow a full 2A to stream in while charging my (former) note 2. (not to mention a full 1.5a while charing on my usb3 port.)
I'm putting this up in the air for everybody else, for apparently development for the n-8000 (rom/kernelwise) isn't as lush as with the Note 2.
I hope this post of mine doesn't end up in the recesses of the forums, for I feel that this would be a very important feature for us owners of the wonderful Note 10.1.
Thank you.

Think usb3 is at best 900ma. How long does yours take to charge?. Neved been a problem for me. Longer is the best for the battery.
Takes around 5 hours+, i only gain around 2-3% per hour with the screen turned off. :x Battery monitor widget reports a fluctuation between +850~+90 mA. On my old note 2 I'd have no problem having a consistent 1.6+ amps, and Galaxy charging current (on my note 2) states that i'm running a full 2A, or rather my phone is sucking as much juice as it can to recharge without samsung's safety gates bottlenecking it. Now I know you folks care a lot about your devices and would say that it's bad and it'l decrease the battery's lifetime, etc. I've come to accept whatever risks there are.
I just really wish someone could pull off what Andreilux was able to do for my note 2, where I didn't have to go through the trouble of modifying my usb cable's pins/rummaging through "working" chargers that'l deliver its rated capacities and what not. Unticked the "Disable power margin", as well as this other option I can't remember what it was exactly, and bam, original charger+cable was delivering 2A without any hicks, chaging 3100mah in around...2 hours or less. And plugged in to my usb 3 slot, GCC reported 1.5A being delivered.
*aother note on my 10.1 n-8000
And often the battery would DRAIN even while it's being charged. A few reconnects of my usb cable and it delivers around +250ma worth of charing, which is SLOW. I'd be lucky if it sticks to 1000+.
So there. If the master himself (andreilux) is unable to provide one for our note 10.1, i'm pretty sure there are other brilliant minds with great capacity who'd be able to give this feature for us.
I've seen in other threads how they were discussing/showing the tweaks towards the charging current being done, like what's going on here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327873
Hell sign me up! Ive had my 10.1 since the day they came out and Im So SICK of the slow charging! I feel I should wake up to a 100% charged device if I remember to plug it in before I go to sleep! my Note2 charges about 1.5 hrs, My tablet, who knows Sometimes 5 hrs sometimes 10!

Been checking the forums day by day with crossed fingers as to having some magical kernel Implement this tweak. :fingers-crossed:
Aye, my tablet's charging is acting weird as well, 8 hours or more for a charge? christ!
I have the vs980. If I use chargers that did not come with the phone I get some strange behavior. It seems that every time I plug these other chargers in (one from a gnex one from the nexus 10) the phone charges at a different rate. Using battery monitor for example, I could plug it in, and the phone doesn't even really, charge, maybe 19mah. Then I could unplug, and replug in and its charging at 600mah. Anyone else using existing chargers they have on this phone experiencing this? The gnex for example didn't seem to care what charger I used, it charged.
I'm interested in experiences others are having. Please don't just tell me to buy more lg chargers, that's not helpful.

I noticed strange charging behaviour with the Z1 also, I doubt they share the same charging circuits but both the Z1 and the G2 seem to be much more sensitive to chargers than S600 based phones.
The Z1 is considerably worse than the G2 though.
Maybe just a coincidence that they're both S800 based phones.
After careful thought, I decided to return my shield tablet (so I won't be doing any dev work for it.) The tablet just isn't right for me. It has some issues, but so does every tablet/phone/etc. I'm not posting this to start bashing nvidia, etc... I just felt obligated to let people know that I've changed my mind and so won't be doing dev work for the device.
Take care
Gary
Wow. Talk about selfish. Let me guess, Apple paid you to keep developing for Samsung o_0 , wow. No one believes in charity anymore, so much for Ferguson.

Huh? I'm selfish because I returned a tablet I wasn't happy with? What am I missing here?
Hi
Sad to hear/see a dev leave a product, but can you tell us/me why? Just wondering. I'm on the fence with regards to buying the tablet and would like to hear from someone with a more objective point of view.
Cheers and good luck with your future dev work
I think bipoler was being facetious.
Thanks for what you do as a dev. Hope you find the right device for you!

1. Anger at NVidia for what I feel was purposely misleading consumers about the lollipop release on the 18th (US/LTE). I know they turned a blind eye to the leaked update, but they should have disclosed the potential delay when they made the announcement.
2. While the battery life was acceptable, the charging wasn't (for me.). Even with a high amperage charger, the silly tablet would lose charge even playing simple games like "dots" or "threes."
3. I wasn't satisfied with nvidias resolution (or lack of) for the cracked edges issue. Too many customers were (and still are) experiencing the problem even after nvidia claimed it was fixed.
4. My wife asked me to stop spending money on geek toys, and I really wanted a nexus 6
Take care

Were you using the stock cable and stock charger? Some cables do not support high charge rates and even some high amperage chargers are wired for apple devices and most android devices cannot charge higher that .5amps with them.

The stock charger was worse than a computer USB port. I only use higher end USB cables, and I have various charging bricks from several different phones and other devices. The simple fact is that the charging circuit just wouldn't pull enough amperage. (None from apple, BTW). I even have 3.6 amp USB charging ports hardwired into my electrical outlets in various rooms of my house.

>The stock charger was worse than a computer USB port.
That is not right, and sounds like the power brick had a problem. Pc usb should only be providing .5 amps way less than the brick. My brick charges vastly faster than a pc usb port.
> I only use higher end USB cables
High end is only part of it, you need ones that are specifically built with thicker gauge cable.
>None from apple, BTW
It does not have to be from apple as most usb charger manufactures still follow apples charging standard. They do not do the standard for dedicated charging devices (short data pins) that most android device follow. Actually, every dedicated charger i have bought i have had to solder the data pins together for full charging.
Okay. You are assuming that I don't know my way around USB charging. The opposite is true. As well, it really makes no difference in terms of the nvidia tablet. It's gone.

It may not matter to you but the Clarification's made would be extremely useful to someone who may not be well versed in the myrad of issues with charging any android device.

well this is very strange i have realized after one year from having my Note 3 that the battery is draining very fast unknowable have it last night as well at 75% woke this morning the device was turned of i really don't want to try the method of Master resetting if any one has a different method that can help me solve this mater i would be very happy note i have no background apps running or have a bad battery but somthing is fishy here and i realy need to know how to solve this mater thanx hope my post is well understood and read
Its been 1 year, replace your battery I guess.

NO MAN ITS ALRIGHT !!
its always the thought what counts i realy do wanna thank you for at least you've tried helping no one else had
always charge from wall charger and always with original charger
maybe ur charger is damaged.
hay thanx man i have been doing that for the last few days and it seems better i think you are correct thanx a hall bunch i was charging with the small charger and i assume that it is the correct fix.
But this is sooo stupid. Why do you think they include a charger with the phone ? C'mon...

Ever so often, Mediaserver acts up and drains your battery in 3 hours flat. It's a very common Android bug.
Happens to me overnight on occasion, too. A reboot (which occhrs naturally if it shut down) usually fixes the issue. It normally does 1% per 8 hours in deep sleep, and ever so often mediaserver decides to be a bother, usually at night.
The idea of a small charger or powerpack causing a wakelock drain defies the laws of physics. Weak (ahem, 5v2.1a, same as OEM charger, on my 15600mah Xstorm, cheers.) charging hardware does not cause an unrelated app to malfunction.
Weaker chargers do not damage the battery. They're not powerful enough to do so. Neither do more powerful ones (good luck finding one , my TF700t needed 15v and that was a nightmare to find.) as the device simply doesn't draw more than it needs.
Now, unknown-brand 3rd party chargers/packs (the china/ebay variant) CAN harm your device.
But the decent ones will not cause any damage. (Hama, Belkin, HTC, LG, Sony, Xstorm, Philips, etc... Or did anyone seriously think a charger for an LG G3 would damage any other device?)
They include a charger with the phone because they are legally required to supply a method to charge the device. International laws. Nothing more, nothing less.

well thanx alot ShadowLea good looking out.
Wasn't it obvious to what i responded ?
He said, that now, that he charges his phone with the original changer, it seems to be better.
And my point was, why charge it with a non oem charger, when they include one which is meant to be used with the device.
