I wonder why Google didn't give us this update that the hacking community has had for so long. Thoughts?
Because they didn't even give us this update... who knows, maybe it will be in the actual release, if this isn't it.
Edit:
It seems that there IS this feature built in, just depens on the app, etc... at least some are reporting colored track ball alerts for differing apps.
I can confirm the above edit. I get different colors but no way of changing to a preference.

Which colors for which alerts? Mine seems white for everything.
On my GF stock nexus phone i updated to froyo and for text it came up as magenta color.
I tried using handcent sms to change the color but i dont think it is configured yet to control that.
Damn, mine's still white.
I just did a little test with AK notepad and set a notification to glow green and sure enough, it works. I guess the individual apps have to give you the option to change the color.

handcent allowed me to change color of notification, and it did work
People are getting mixed results with the trackball. I can get AK Notepad to work, but nothing else does. On an AT&T N1

That's what it is. I use SMS Popup for my text notification and the app itself gives me the option to change the trackball color. Everything else is still white.
AK notepad works for me
I can see lilhermit creating a working patch for stock 2.2 seeing that Trackball Alert should work just fine now

Uhm, SMS Popup allows you to use any color for SMS. And I use the Bloo Facebook App that gives me a dark blue notification when I get comments, wall posts, etc.
My color trackball works with AK notepad!
Change the LED color settings, create a new note, set the remind and turn standby mode (press power button) and wait!
I wonder if the .34 kernel from cyanogen breaks the trackball . For those of u who its working what kernel version you have? .34 or .32 stock
I really miss trackball alert and the modifications made to the messaging app, I need my colored notifications back!
There's a reason there are no configurable colors for the trackball.
The update to the trackball is behind the scenes and it's meant for the developers. It's up to the application makers to choose the colors for their notifications.
On the plus side, this is android and that's why we have things like lilhermits trackball notifcation alert modifier. =)
Trackball colors IS in Android 2.2:

Well I was wrong about the color trackball notifications. Apparently there is an API for it now (I don't mind being wrong haha)

The STOCK Google apps don't let you configure the colors, but I'm sure someone will whip up an app to control all the colors within 1 or 2 days
Yeah I'm disappointed with froyo because I wanted color track ball for my gmail, talk, etc. How will third party developers be involved with the core stock Google apps? That was the whole point, Google! I'm sure its only 3 lines of code to add into settings to switch the color.
Otherwise you would just root in the first place which defeats the whole point of waiting all this time for official support in froyo.
Third party developers can and already do send the information to light up the trackball.
I know there's apps like Blink, Missed Call or HandcentSMS that allows you to customize the LED light colour, depending on what message you recieve.
However, i cant seem to get any of them to work with Froyo. Missed Call even has a warning when you download the app that it does not work in Froyo.
Is there any reason for this? Any way around this?
Which froyo are you using, sense or vanilla?
Handcent works perfectly with the blue led, havent tried any other colours.

the few colors of handcent works for some reason... chompsms does not, Handcent must do it in some weird way
Hmm. Im pretty sure it didn't work for me. Ill try again though.
Also I'm surprised no developer has included led notifications within their roms. Can they?
Handcent blue/orange notifications work on AOSP and HTC 2.2 ROMs for me, including OD (last I tried was 4.0.4). Since SMS is by far my heaviest phone usage, I just set it to blink blue until I see the message.
Having Missed Call LED notifications working would be brilliant though.

Yea i dont know why there's no app that allows you to set an LED for all notificatons. Email, calls etc etc.
If handcent does it for sms, why the hell cant it do it for email? And why only blue?!

Handcent is an sms app, not an email app. Thats why it can't do it for email.
As for the colours; blue, green, amber, pink and light blue, are all available and work with handcent.
I am using Leedroid 2.1 rom for Froyo.
when I receive email, or missed calls my LED flashes green until I clear the notification of said email/missed call.
***edit****
Just tested again to confirm... if my phone is plugged in and charging the notifications will not flash to indicate missed call/email ..... however once I unplug it the green led begins to flash!

I think with default Froyo SMS, Missed Calls, and Email all flashes green. I can't say for sure though. I just know that with Leedroid thats the case, and When I installed Handcent I was able to change the colour of the SMS notification LED.

Oh ok, i just misread your post.
There has to be a way to have these custom led colors built into roms. or an stand alone app that allows you to change the colors for all notifications. It's possible, i just dont know how to do it.

It says my rom is not compatable? i got OpenDesire running..
also, all this seems to do is turn the led's on and off with a button. I want to tie those colours to a message/email etc so that when i get one of them, i see that colour
Come on guys!
have you guys tried "Easy Reminder" from the market?
with that app you can let yourself remind of missed calls/sms and you can edit the led-color..
hope this helps!

you have to switch off stock sms app so that handcent one is in use, i.e stop notifications.
currently only sms colour can be changed using handcent
I was taking a quick look at the leds in the G2.
When i look at the jogball-backlight in regards to the trackpad light, I am unable to change the color. It retains the following value.
# cat color
color : invalid lengthI tried to echo "0 255 255" into that, and still see the same message when I cat it. Any ideas?
Also, I can cat 255 into the brightness with no effect. I see the value when I cat brightness, but the light is still off. Looks like you have to trigger it? When sleeping the display and forcing the notification light, the brightness gets set back to 0 after it's flash.
Also the jogball-backlight directory contains:
- uevent
l- subsystem
l- devices
- power/wakeup
- brightness
- max_brightness
- trigger
- color
Also, check this out.

It has a touchpad light like the nexus and a battery notify light next the speaker. Currently, the trackpad flashing during an incoming call and the led light by the earpiece flashes during low battery or solid while charging. No flashing anything for notifications such as messages/email/ or reminders which sucks obviously. No apps change this currently without root. I guess this was the concern and the color obviously.
Tweetdeck makes the led flash when new post appear
When I have a new text message, with Chomp, the trackpad flashes intermittently as long as it goes unchecked.
Well that's good news I look a bit harder for 3rd party apps that can make notifications without root and see. Plus, there is a trackpad light app that requires root but let's you change colors and it creates notifications for email/sms/mms/ and reminders.
Have you tried that application yet? Would be interesting to see if it works as the directory structure looks different than what I read about the nexus 1. I was wondering if the 'invalid number' for color was due to no color being available, or just something that we couldn't read/set.
The notification in the earpiece looks to be amber/green versus RGB.

The notification in the earpiece also goes red when battery is low along with amber and green so I think its RGB. I miss that led being used for notifications like on the G1. The trackpad glows slowly for notifications and seems to be only if the screen is off.

If you go to /sys/class/leds you will only see amber and green. On my G1 I see red, green, blue. I think the amber is actually used for the red. I think it would be hard to having any blue colors without a blue led setting.

Im assuming none of you guys seen the other two ligths located at the top left of the device on the face? if im not mistaken if you hold it up to the light it shows a purple square bulb below and a blue one above. is the blue one for blutooth? and is the other thing the proximity sensor?
I'm pretty sure both of the other "bulbs" you see are actually both the proximity sensor, on my vibrant there were 3 things, one was the ambient light sensor and the other 2 were the proximity sensors. I guess its an emitter and reciever.

Hey, I just got the G2 and I am also gravely missing the LED notifications from the G1. I installed handcent, and have gotten the trackpad outline to blink, but the blinking is so infrequent and limited to white. There must be a way to toggle the charging indicator LED's. I've tried the app "Blinker" with no satisfaction. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
not getting the notifications on gmail, or handcent or anything. This is a deal-breaker for me. I may steal my nexus back from my wife and leave her with the G2 if one of you smart guys cant figure this out!

What is this reminder you are talking about? I don't see any reminder in the sdk. Also, I would be on board with finding alternate apps that use this reminder instead if the Gmail app used it. No notification on gmail blows, I'm sorry!
Also, I heard chomp shows the led notification, but I tried it out and it doesn't how about being a little more constructive and offering alternatives.

No its not a built in option. Nor would it be in the sdk... there a few third party apps that add the ability. Here's what I use: gmail notifier/ sms notifier/ and calendar notifier. They are all free and available in the market. They work very well and make up for lack of traditional led. The trackball flashes too only in white and fades on and off slowly.

When the N1 came out, all we had was white notifications from the trackball. It took some time but devs eventually figured out how to get diverse colored notifications from the trackball, and from the charge LED.
Relax and be patient, surely the G2 will follow the same path. It just came out.
So i have been waiting forever to get blue led or any other colors to use with missed calls or sms. sms pop up (app) or missed call (app) will now change your led to only blue. no other color works that i tried but atleast its one more.
Handcent will make any color but red flash the led blue, I don't think it would do anything but red before
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
emails are red...(gmail & vm)
Handcent only works for red and blue (I have it set to red), My Nimbuzz IM is blue, and my Kik is a purpleish color but u have to set it on green from the notifications setting so it can work.. I'm currently trying to get a new color for my YouMail app...
Omg another thread about this.
I thought magenta worked?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
The epic only has a red and blue led...no green. So the only colors your going to get will be...
wait for it...red...and....blue
And as stated above, magenta should work since red and blue makes magenta...i couldn't get that to work in 2.1, I'll have to try it now that I'm on froyo.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
As far as I know, there's only red, blue and violet (red and blue) led colors. Too bad they didn't put a green one in there. That way you could make a hell of a lot more color combinations with rgb.
The only time I've seen violet is when the phone is charged and the led is blue. Then someone sent you an email or text. With the screen off, unplug the cable and for a brief moment the led is violet.
Ive noticed that on froyo, i get red for email and texts, blue for twitter and purple for im apps

The main reason is to explain why we are limited to only those three colors. to get more than a few colors, we must have an RGB(red green blue) LED, (which the Epic does not)without one of those, our color options are drastically limited.
Although that is good to know about Kik if I ever try it out.
the only way you will see our led is with the screen off for missed alerts. so if you are using an app and it has a test notif option you push that then turn the screen off and you will see the led
I noticed (unless it was my imagination) 2 different colors for my notification led (which I was pleasantly surprised to find), Gmail is like a light blue, and I think it was fb that was regular blue, so is there an app to set the led color for each app?
Or at least see all the colors it can display?

You can use LightFlow which allows you to control the notifications (light, sound, vibration) for a ridiculous amount of apps. Works perfectly on the Nexus 10, I've used it on my Galaxy Nexus forever. It's a phenomenal app. That's the lite version, there's also a pay version which unlocks more features.
+1 for lightflow, I use it on my phone its great. Trying it for my N10
I'm pretty sure some apps have built in customization for the led color, I've seen it in the facebook and facebook messenger app.

lol.. well I had found this app before starting this thread, however it seemed like it was messed up because it kept showing a light when I had no notifications. Turns out it was "No signal," and after disabling everything in Light Flow, I can test the led for colors.
I suppose you cannot use any other apps that Light Flow doesn't have? for example Facebook or Google Voice? I don't see any way to add an app. oh well.

You can't add programs but the paid version has like over 300 different apps I think. Well worth the dollar or two. I use it for Google Voice on both my N10 and GNex and it works perfectly. If it's not there it's likely due to being the lite version as mentioned above.

Craigsnotifica goes purple. (Edit: On my S3) Try that.
If you couldn't tweak the color led light for Facebook, go to Setting -> Notifications -> Light
If you're willing to root and flash a custom ROM, many feature the ability to control led and set custom colors on a per-app basis. From personal experience, I know that the AOKP ROM by Task650 and Ktoonsez has an awesome interface for doing so.
