[Q] No 'Battery Life' ROM for the Nexus 7? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've seen loads of ROMs all about adding speed to the Nexus 7, and most of these ROMs also advertise better battery life, but I've not found any that actually have better battery life than stock, and I haven't seen any ROMs with a main purpose of increasing the battery life.
Also, it might be just me but I'm really satisfied with the speed of the stock ROM so I don't see much need to speed it up!
Franco Kernel did increase my battery life but I can't use it on 4.2.2 as it locks up my device into deep sleep. Other kernels I've tried have increased performance but not battery life. I have tried Elite Battery Saving kernel but that's for an old version of android, so to revert back in kernel would be reverting lots of the changes in kernel that have been done by Google I think (I know there were a lot of changes from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2?)
So my question is, is there a ROM / Kernel combination out there that is just trying to increase the battery life?
Thanks a lot. No disrespect to the hardworking devs that work on speeding up the Nexus 7; it's just my personal opinion.

Roms have little impact on battery life. Its primarily going to be a combo of the kernel and your own unique settings. Want to see anecdotes regarding other users' results with different kernels? There a thread for that.

As najaboy stated, it's a combination of kernel and user settings.
Note that custom kernels have governors, which regulate cpu core active states, and mhtz. Suggest you read up on custom kernel governors to get the most.
Also, we have a thread pertaining to this;

As "Best Rom-Kernel" threads are not allowed, however, that thread is dedicated to it.

[Q] Which is the most Performant MT4G Kernel?

Hello, first of all this is my first post and thread. I have read the rules and searched for a similar thread. I am not stupid and I know how forums work. Now my question is: Which is the most performant kernel for the MT4G?
Know to be more specific, I am looking for a kernel which a very high OC and UV rate. I want something that can easily manage clock speed when it needs it the most. I am interested in genereal boosts of speed, higher I/O managing speeds, better gaming experiences and a longer battery life. I know that the kernel doesnt do all of that but it has a major impact those aspects. I am running CM7 nightly 144. Im hesitating between Faux123 Cm7/AOSP 2.6.35.13 kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113697) and thederekjay 2.6.35.13::demonSPEED INSANITY kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113554). I appreciate anykind of constructive feed back
I personally use demonspeed-insanity. It'll clock up to 1.8 atm. Couple that with the SMARTASS governor and you get a pretty decent balance of battery life to performance.
can't go wrong with either kernel, i've used both and their both outstanding in performance and battery life.

Thanks for the feedback guys . I'll probably try both of them. I'll post some quadrant benchmarks and battery life results.
Faux 123 1.0.7 is the best IMO, great uv and quadrant scores, got 2600+ on stock and battery life is great.
I have used both kernels and got great battery life from each one. I prefer Faux's kernel for AOSP roms, and thederekjay's kernel for MIUI roms. Faux updated his kernel to OC @ 2.03ghz and its blazing fast
Faux's all day!!!!
He has put in the most work and has the best performance by a wide margin.

[Q] Best Kernel for Performance/Battery

What Kernel shoud i use for best Performance/Battery on PA Beta 6 JB 4.2?
Franco Kernel vs Trinity Kernel?
Check my thread in the general section.

I've not tried trinity but I found that the Franco Kernel seemed to pull off the rather surprising trick of improving performance & battery life.
One huge improvement was to the time it takes to charge the device.
I found that Trickstermod on the play store is rather useful for tweaking the clock speeds for 3rd party kernels.

[Q] Overwhelming JB Kernel Selection

Having read over the numerous lengthy JB kernel threads, and not seen any similar asked and answered, here's one question I expected to see here already.
Simply, disregarding settings like wifi or background syncing or apps, which existing kernel should I select strictly for best battery life?
Ideally it should:
1) Underclock
2) Undervolt
3) Use most efficient scheduler
4) Leverage deep sleep mode
Thank you in advance for ny feedback!
Cool so no opinions or anecdotal evidence out there?
try them and find out how your device reacts to them. there is no best kernel. there is only the kernel that your device(and you) like the best since every device will react differently to any given kernel. try out a few, it only takes 2-3 minutes to flash and boot a kernel. you dont have to wipe anything when flashing a kernel, wipe nothing. take a day or two to flash different kernels. for battery life comparisons, give the kernels 2-3 cycles before judging battery life. btw, i use trinity kernel, and i thoroughly enjoy it

And dont really look for "most efficient scheduler". Custom kernel all have numerous schedulers and governers. Most all use the same selection, with a few exceptions, and you can change it to the scheduler/governer combination that best suits your needs. But first, it is all aboit trial and error on which those may be for you. I am partial to motleys or m kernel by metallice. Best of luck! And most of all, have fun on the journey.

[Q] Best Kernel to UV, reduce heat and extend battery life

I have been testing different Kernels and settings on my fast binned Nexus 4, what I am trying to achieve is a similar experience to stock kernel and being able to undervolt and maybe even have sweep2wake.
In my experience AK and NEO gave me the best results in Antutu (which I don’t care much about) but I am not sure if they respect the thermal throttling settings, I don’t feel good knowing that my phone will be producing more heat than on stock so the questions are:
What kernels respect the thermal throttling settings as the stock kernel?
Some kernels allow you to set some SOC temperature settings in “Trickster”, what are does? Is that only for the maximum temperature before the phone shuts down?
Thank you guys.
theres no such thing as a best kernel. all our devices react differently with every kernel, and we all have differing needs. try them all out, thats the only way that you will find the best lernel for your device.

My questions where a bit more specific than just “whats the best kernel” as I said in the frist post:
*What kernels respect the thermal throttling settings as the stock kernel?
*Some kernels allow you to set some SOC temperature settings in “Trickster”, what are does? Is that only for the maximum temperature before the phone shuts down?
I want a kernel that has similar or same thermal throttling settings as the stock kernel, I don’t want my phone making more heat and I want to be able to undervolt and maybe even use sweep2wake, all this was said in the original post but thanks.
I have tested franco kernel, AK and NEO but I am not sure about theyr thermal throttling criteria and/or settings, I have tried researching but I cant come to the conclusion if they produce more heat than stock or not.

Nice post.
We don't want to hurt any developers feelings by saying who's work is better. lol

[Q] General question and statement about modding.

Can someone tell me what Custom Rom will give a better battery life AND better performance? Now before everyone attacks me...performance can AND is measured in benchmarks...And there's tons of benchmarks out there..Don't say the typical response that "benchmarks are not the same as real world usage" bla bla ...it's pretty darn close anyways...I've tried CyanogenMod and is great for battery, however cuts the phone in half on the processing side..Clean ROM, Paranoid, I have tried most...any suggestions?
Custom ROMs do have certain tweaks to increase battery life and performance, but they're usually set one way or another. To have your device running smoothly all the time, your CPU needs to cycle all the time. But that means more functions and thusly, more battery drain.
If you want the best of both worlds, you'll need to install a custom kernel with a wide selection of governors. It helps to set actions and have scripts running to determine how to best utilize your CPU, or you can just set the governor manually each time you need to change your performance parameters.
