[Q] Buying an Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear everyone,
Currently I own a Nokia N900, but I want to switch to the Nexus 4. Is it still worth buying it? Since there are alot of new phones coming out with better specs.
I'm also a bit negative about the amount of storage space the Nexus 4 has. My phone currently has 32 GB eMMC space and another 16 GB in micro SD. Not that I actually need all the space but it seems so much less.
Can anyone help me decide if this is the phone for me? I do live in The Netherlands so I have to buy the phone in Germany. That should not be a problem for my carriers right?
Kind regards,
Zenety

I'm perfectly content with the storage, it's enough for music, movies and apps as well as a CWM backup. The price is still unbeatable and in my opinion 1080p screens and faster processors are completely unnecessary. The phone will work everywhere so you don't need to worry about your carriers or anything like that.

I have a 16GB version, music and pictures are stored on Dropbox, and have about 10 GB left of free storage space. So for me its more than enough. There will alwas be newer and better phones released but the Nexus line is always special imo. Pure android so no Touchwizz/Sense etc etc, fast as hell, easy to root and restore, highly customisable, always on the latest android version and a very active community here on XDA. I would recommend it fully. Btw i had the N900 too and realy loved it, especialy Meamo.
I also bought the phone in Germany, MediaMarkt Aachen, current prive is 380 euro`s i think. I use T-Mobile and no problem whatsoever. APN is listed in the rom.

Thanks for the fast answers.
Some people in my class complained about the fact that the back is made of glass. I also read about it on this forum on some threads but it doesn't seem to be a real problem. Would you still recommend getting a bumber or any other protection besides a cover to protect it?
Yeah, the Nexus line is special. My dad bought the Nexus 7 as a tablet and it's just more special then any other 7 inch tablet. I will probably drive to Germany next week then. The price is just so much better then any other phone on the market with a quad core. The biggest upgrade will be the RAM memory. My phone has 265 MB of RAM .
Again thanks for the fast answers. I hope I will also enjoy the Nexus 4 like you do.

Check the accessories forum here. There are a few good bumper options that will help with drops while still showing off the back. Get a rear "screen" protector to prevent scratches. If you're hard on phones, you may want to get more protection than a bumper. Gorilla glass is still glass.

The Nexus line really is something special. The developers and AOSP make it so much better.
My Nexus S (around 3.5 years old) is still going strong, and I'm sure my Nexus 4 will survive another 3 years, although I suspect I'll be getting a new Nexus every year if they're going to be this cheap.

I personally use a full leather pouch case so that I can use the device without any screen protectors or cases but it's safe in my pocket. It adds a bit of bulk but overall I think it's worth it. I have no scratches on the front but the back has tonnes of minute scratches that can only be seen under certain lighting conditions. 95% of the time they aren't visible and the phone looks like new.

I was almost certain I wanted to buy a Nexus 4. But on the forum of my old phone alot of people come by to ask if the phone is still comparable with phones that are released today.
It might be possible that people here already have better experiences with newer phones that I did not know about. As estallings15 already said, just needed some advice about the glass and other phones

Is it worth it?

Hey guys, im thinking of buying a nexus 7, and for the price it is the bargain of the century.
but is it really worth it? ive got a S3 and thats getting JB soon
is there anything coming out soon that will be roughly the same price but any better?
Thanks Jack
I'm somewhat in the same boat as you but instead of upsizing in screen size I'm downsizing from a 10" tablet which is also set to recieve JB soon.
I think the largest factor in deciding if the Nexus 7 is right for you is knowing what you mostly use your cellphone for. If you mostly only surf the web, read books/articles, and watch movies trying to kill time when outside then a tablet isn't really right for you as a cellphone will have way more mobility and access to 4G internet. However, if you plan an using the Nexus 7 while sitting down somewhere or at home on the coach then the Nexus 7 would be a much better fit for you than just the SG3 due to the larger screen size and higher resolution.
Personally I dislike how cellphones such as the SG3 keep getting larger but I understand some people (like my parents) don't want mutiple devices of varying sizes but instead want something that can be used to fill various roles.
From what I've seen most of the tablets available at this moment or in the near future seem to have similar specs or features as the Nexus 7. However I'd suggest you stick with the Nexus 7 because there is much more support for the device as well as accessories. For now 7" tablets are still seen as "budget devices" so manufactures continue to make the exterior out of plastic with similar internals as others in the $200-300 price range.
I own a Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7 and I feel like they complement the other perfectly. The Galaxy Nexus is perfect for on the go and what not, but while I'm home the Nexus 7 is my go to device.

Yesssss.... but no more of these threads though...
Fully worth it mate. You won't find anything better for the price. Google are selling it cheap to get people on the play store, not make profit from the device itself.
Also, it's a nexus device, and nothing has better support than a nexus device. I'm fully sick of buying devices which never see updates.

Kindle Fire 2 ought to be announced soonish.
for me the only main annoyance with the n7 is the lack of optional 3G, it would be perfect if it had that.
for the price and the form factor and the technical specifications, nothing can come near it, I find I use my phone less and less (I have a htc velocity that has a 4.3 inch screen) and I'm uninstalling more and more off my phone, I may even end up just grabbing a smaller phone next time round as I carry the nexus 7 everywhere in my back pocket.
Using tablet talk, drop box and splash top, this has been pretty good at letting me get around the home and have everything funneled through WiFi. Plays games well, has amazing support, is the best Asus tablet I've owned actually. Takes my phone out of my pocket, keeps from needing to be at my comp to check my work email or open secure files, makes me portable. I'm pretty amazed. And this is a vanilla device, so it will always be up to date.

So you would rather pay for a second 3g service plan rather than just tethering off your phone and only having to pay for just one...
When I am walking around away from Wi-Fi, I just turn on tethering, stick the phone in my pocket and forget about it. The 4g in my phone is almost as good as my network at the house. No extra fees...
I have to have my phone with me at all times anyway 24x7 On call. In on 4g right now.

Thanks for all the replies guys!
the reason i was asking it because im trying to get a YouTube account going! and i know there are alot of them out there that do android related stuff, and obviously the nexus 7 has been around for a while so i wont get many views/subs from something that was done a while ago!
i am still thinking of it and appreciate all the replies!

[Q] Should I get an N7??

Hi guys,
came over from the Vivid forum.. im making my christmas list, and i was looking at the TF700T Infinity, but its hella-expensive lol, and the Nexus 7 seems like a good alternative. Would you recommend this tablet? And also i read somewhere it comes with the transformers movie and $25 Google Play credt. Is this offer still available? And if you wouldnt recommend it, what tablet(s) would you recommend that are 7' or 10', preferably in the $200-$400 price range.
Thanks
I would recommend it bc it is easy to use very fast and if the battery ever goes bad from what I just now learned it is very easy to replace. But some of the cos are intermintint wifi issues but I think they have been worked out

And yes I would recommend this device

Great Tablet
The tablet is AMAZING. However, I must warn you be EXTREMELY CAREFUL when you drop it on the floor, it cracks like dropping a glass vase.
Other than that, this tablet is absolutely amazing. What it does not have is external storage capacity, or rear camera, although who wants that anyways? You can already get up to 32GB which is way more than enough. I don't really see how much else you would need, but even if you do need more space, i.e. for multiple movies, you could just swap the movies out through a laptop or w.e. And who wants a rear camera? lol
I wouldn't really recommend any alternatives because this beats everything hands down. For this price, nothing is better. The next best alternative is the new iPad at 200% the Price, with 5% the increase in better functionality(i.e. memory card + rear camera).
i would really reccomend it its a great device with a great price tag and a great operating system
Sure, why not!
I was thinking of getting either the N10 or the N7, but i think i'll go for the N7 because of the lower price and smaller size.
For me, things that i miss on the stock N7 are:
- USB-Host support (can be fixed with root)
- a way to connect it to HDMI devices (i'm pretty sure, that someone will hack it to work with miracast, tho)
- vibration (unfortunately the chance to get that is very low)
But yea, the reason to get one of the Nexus-devices for me is the already big and creative modding community.
Thank you, XDA!
If you are trying to root, ROM, etc. I recommend a nexus device due to the vanilla android and massive development community. It will be easier to root, unbrick, things like that. Also it will receive Google updates for many months to come. The Nexus 7 is the best android device I have ever used (by a landslide IMO) so i would recommend the nexus 7 (maybe 10 but its pricey). However the transformer and is a fantastic device so you definitely wouldn't go wrong there, especially if you want expandable storage via SD card, that was a deal breaker of the nexus 10 for me. A 10 incher needs lots of memory for me also ide rather have the quad core. So if you really want a 10 inch tablet maybe go for the transformer.

[Q] Need some advice... HTC One vs Nexus 4... (jumping ship from iOS)

To make a long story short, I'm trying Android for the first time after being a diehard Apple user... (I'm currently on the iPhone 5)
Anyways, I was looking at the following three phones:
Nexus 4
HTC One
Galaxy S4
I jumped the gun and ordered the Nexus 4 but then I realized that the 16 GB model I ordered didn't have any SD storage so I have to fit ALL my music and videos (video podcasts) into the small 16 GB space. I'm also losing LTE support but I can deal with that.
My Nexus 4 is coming tomorrow and I was told to refuse delivery to send it back and get a refund.
In the meantime I ordered the HTC One developer edition for the unlocked bootloader (seems important for rooting, flashing alternate ROMs), but now I read that alternate ROMs often lose hardware features like camera post-processing, image stabilization (?), etc.
Now I'm still undecided because I didn't realize that flashing custom ROMs would lose features like that...
I do really like the idea of stock Android (and the very latest updates) but the higher resolution, and more importantly bigger storage, of the HTC One is making me think I should go that route.
Can anybody give me any advice?
EDIT: I also forgot that the Nexus 4 has a much smaller screen size due to the LCD buttons taking up much of the screen realestate...
As far as your media goes do you use Google Play at all? You can at least have all of your music uploaded into the Google Play cloud and not worry about installing it on your phone. Just a thought.
Yes you are in quite a pickle. The problem is that there are too many different android devices out there which shine in their own way but that can be a good thing. Anyway personally I'd go with the galaxy s4-brilliant specs and an sd card slot, I was going with the nexus 4 but I am a hardcore gamer so that was out of the picture. Also I'm not fond of htc's . The galaxy s4 will have brilliant and lots of developers for roms, kernels ect and I would advise you to get it.

Don't listen to him the one or the nexus 4 will do you good just use cloud storage. And a custom ROM will remove those in screen buttons.

Seeing I just ordered my Nexus 4 today I would advice that. It offers pure Android, so no Touchwiz.
But if you can afford it I would suggest the HTC One. That phone is damn sexy

Being a fan of both iOS and Android platforms, both have compelling feature sets. That said, there are many exquisite handsets for Android lately. The Nexus 4 has been out for a while now and we should start seeing leaks for the Nexus 5. And my current personal favorite is the HTC One. My Nexus 4 tragically met it's demise on a tile floor at Subway earlier this week and rather than go from 4s to 5 or replace my Nexus 4 I'm going to give the HTC a try (only thing left to confirm is the level of NFC support... SE included or not for Google Wallet). I would see which handsets meets your needs then go for that one. Also FWIW, until Apple comes out with a bigger screen, not just taller, I'm not going to upgrade my iOS. The HTC device also seems a bit sturdier than the Nexus 4 with it's aluminum back. As for the samsung offerings... personally I don't like them. I had a Google Nexus and was completely unhappy with the AMOLED screen and cheap plastic chassis. Just my 2¢.
I would get the HTC one !
Sent from my Nexus 4
HTC One is nice, until you realize you can't even service the battery without destroying the phone.
Most people end up selling their phones before they need to replace the battery. Phone batteries nowadays last at least 4-5 years if not more.
Sent from my Nexus 4
I wager development on the N4 will be alive & well long after people have moved on from S4 or HTC One--just look at the GNex's lifespan of relevance. If you're looking for a solid, dev-friendly phone to last a while go with an N4.
And maybe a case, depending. Now if you're not a cheap-ass & feel adventurous to boot get the S4 as well when it comes out. Who says you have to choose
You wont loose lte just flash .33 radio or the other old ones.

If key lime pie was not coming in may, then i would have got the s4. But since key lime pie is coming in may, it means that nexus 4 will get it right away, while htc and samsung will wait at least six months.
I've used plenty of sense phones, HTC makes great hardware but stock android > sense.
Coming from iOS the N4 is an easy transition, only two things that are really different are widgets (you don't have to use these) and the app drawer so you will be able to pick it up just fine.
I bet you're going to hate the android OS since you only used iOS. Try it before you buy, but it seems you already made that mistake and you blindly bought a Nexus.

[Q] Buy used 1st Gen N7 or wait?

So I'm wondering if I should buy a used 1st gen N7 or wait for the new one. Currently, I'm not planning on doing anything too graphics or processor intensive on it. I'm just sick of having to use a light for my Kindle Touch and not being able to do anything else but read on it. Plus I would like to carry around something smaller than my 15" laptop to class to take notes using Quickoffice Pro or OneNote. I just bought an Inland flexible keyboard and I want to hook that up to the N7. Anyways, I found one that's been rooted and is selling for $140 in good condition. I also saw a couple that were selling at about that price point, a little higher and lower.
The question is: Is it worth it to buy the new-gen N7 instead of spending less on a used N7 if the current one's processor and screen (I'm pretty careful with phones, cameras, and computers; i.e. I don't drop them at all) might be all that I need? I understand that it's most likely going to be faster and even have improved battery life, which would be useful if I play some Android games on there. I might play some graphics intensive games once I actually get the device in front of me, but I'm most likely going to be using it purely for e-reading, maybe watching the occasional movie/video, browsing the web, and email. And from what I've heard, the N7 doesn't lag too much unless you're running multiple apps/tasks or doing something that requires a lot of processor speed.
If all you are looking for is an e-reader, the original Nexus 7 performs that job just as well as any tablet out there. The only thing that the 2nd Gen will have that you would benefit from is a higher resolution screen, but the screen on this is no slouch either.
If the price is right, go for it. $140 is right on the edge for me though, I would be curious if it would be wiser to spend $50 bucks more to avoid any "used" headaches.
Just be aware that a new one is coming, and when it does this model will drop in price. As long as you are OK with that fact, go for it!
Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking too. I just happened to see a 32 gb month-old Nexus 7 for $180 and I'm trying to see if the seller is willing to drop the price a bit, maybe by like $10 or something. If not, it seems like it would still be a good deal.
Like I said though, I'm only thinking of using it as an e-reader for now because I don't have it in front of me. Once I do, I might be tempted to do a lot more with it, though I'm not sure if I'll be pushing it so much that I would want to get a faster processor.
Which brings me to another question: What kinds of activities do you do on your Nexus 7 that makes it lag and you wish, "If only it had a faster processor and more RAM"?
All of my wha!!??
There is a new nexus 7 now?
I Googled it and found nothing but rumours...
Please could someone enlighten me?
There is already a thread on this topic if you look near the top of this forum.
Have you noticed any lag on your Nexus 7? For instance, does using OneNote, Quickoffice Pro, and Chrome with 5 or so tabs stress it or does it still run smoothly?

Interesting.. I didn't know that lol. Well, I've been thinking about it and I think I'm going to buy a Hisense Sero Pro instead of getting a used Nexus 7. I drove 50 minutes today to buy it from someone on Craigslist, but he didn't show and wasn't answering calls or texts by the time I got there. Waste of time.. So I called up my local Walmart and asked if they had the Sero Pro. Turns out they do! So I'm going to go sometime tonight and check it out. I've been reading and hearing good things about them, especially that it's like a Nexus 7 that isn't a Nexus 7. It's 149.99 new, has dual cameras, micro sd card expansion, mini-hdmi out, and specs almost the same as the Nexus 7. The only thing is that it has a 4,000 mAh battery... so a little less battery life. But I just bought a cheap 64 GB micro sd card on eBay and I want to try it out on this! If anyone is interested, I'll post a bit of what I think if I end up getting it tonight or tomorrow.
Also, people have already rooted this, but I don't know if I'll need to just yet... maybe I'll try it if I desperately need to sideload some apps. Otherwise, I think I'm going to leave it as stock if I get it.

I picked up the Hisense Sero Pro yesterday and so far I am very happy. It is leaps and bounds faster than my old tablet. I don't have a nexus 7 so can't test them together but all my benchmarks have been spot on with the nexus scores online. Too early to tell you about reliability but it feels solid enough, As long as I get a year out of it I will be extremely happy with this purchase. I thought about importing something but didn't want to deal with any issues. As long as Walmart carries these you can swap them out if they break.

[Q] Is Nexus 4 still a good deal?

Hi there!
Looking to come back from iOS to Android without having to pay through the roof, I narrowed my selection down to Samsung Galaxy S3 16 GB and LG Nexus 4 16 GB. I can have either of these devices for about €350, which I'm prepared to pay for a good new mid-range phone.
Please advise whether Nexus 4 is still a good deal, or should I go for the previous Samsung's flagship?
Thanks in advance!

S3 if your a fan of touchwiz and or smoked screen, N⁴ if your a fan of vanilla android and IPS. Also neither of them phones are considered mid range by any means of the phrase, spec for spec they are comparable with nearly any phone out with maybe the exception not having 1080p screen of that matters. The n4 doesn't have expandable memory, nor remove able battery, again maybe they matter to, maybe not. I've had both, and I kept my N4.

I you like pure android, no bloatware and fast updates go for the N4. Even sold my Galaxy S4 after a week because of the lags/stutters and excessive bloatware to return to the N4. The N4 is a joy to use
If you want to have a phone with the latest Google Stock Rom --> Nexus 4
Issues concerning non-extendable storage space: consider using cloud services like dropbox for non-important data.

Tbh, I'm more concerned with updates and glass back.
How long do you guys recon N4 will be getting updates? And the glass back, is it tough enough? My iPhone 4S is on its 3rd backplate

I would suggest using a descent case ot at least a back skin. The back glass is fragile and proned to shatter on impact. For the rest its a solid device.

Thanks! Looks like I'll be getting Nexus 4 after all, S3 is behind of software updates and I really hated these games with updates on my HTC Desire.
Wise choice! You're going to enjoy this badboy device.
I most likely will

Nice choice i sold my Galaxy s3 to get a Nexus 4 and it was a very smart move knowing i have a faster phone since i had the i747 s3 and wont have to wait on updates. Best thing is i only added $50 to what i sold my gs3 for to get a 16gb nexus 4. :good:
Nexus 4, get a bumper along with it.
Also a screen protector for the front and back.
Same here. I did not regret my decision.

i had the international Quad S3 and went to n4 my S3 was on cyanogen so was essentially a stock device anyway; BUT! lack of official updates and the lack of proper video drivers meant the performance was not as smooth as i would've liked, so i sold it for more than i had originally paid (i got it cost through connections ) and ended up with some profit and a nexus 4.
dont regret it at all.
when people want a cheap phone i always reccomend the N4 its cheap and still relatively high spec. its basically a high end phone for a low-mid price (at least here in Australia)

I would recommend a protection case. My N4 fell down recently, but the back glass did not break due to the protection case.
