[Q] Nexus 4 blank slate (brick) help! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok.... I was having trouble updating to the most recent OTA update (4.2.2) and I have tried 3 times to unroot and restore stock rom to no avail. The most recent attempt I just deleted everything using TWRP and CWM... So i have no OS apparently... I have the bootloader. I have a nandroid backup on my PC. When I select Recovery from the bootloader it loads into CWM Recovery. I don't think I have a recovery file on the phone, just on my pc. I have Wugfresh's toolkit... But I can't seem to flash the stock 4.2.2 update, or the 4.2.1, or my nandroid backup, or anything that will let me make a phone call... This is a problem.
From the bootloader when I select "Start" it just hangs with the Google logo and the "unlocked" icon at the bottom. I can only hold the power button for 10seconds to power off and then volume down + power to get back to the bootloader.
I don't know where to go from here.... Please help!

Restart Recovery is what loads CWM. You need to flash the stock images VIA FASTBOOT. Find some guides and read up on how to do that, because it is what will solve your problem.

Manually Flash Recovery Image

I'm having an issue with recovery. I re-flashed back to stock, and when I tried re-rooting my phone, it took me back to stock recovery which for some strange reason wont let me select anything with the power button. Is there guide to flash to image manually using adb? Or any way to re-root the phone? One-click root wont work since the recovery isn't letting me select anything. I'm stuck.
Nevermind. I went ahead and was able to do a master reset and go back to stock with ODIN3.

[Q] i9023 (2.3.3): custom recovery can't revert to stock recovery after reboot

Hi, sorry to bother you guys.
My friend got a NEW i9023 with android version 2.3.3. She asked me to root it and update it.
I first unlocked the oem lock and flashed the clockwork recovery. Then I thought I'd better do the update first since the update will remove the "root".
So I reboot the i9023.
It is expected that the recovery will automatically reverts to stock recovery after reboot. But I found the clockwork recovery is still there after several reboot.
It seems I lost the stock recovery.
I can do a manual update using clockwork recovery, however, without stock recovery I can't do a factory reset in Android OS menu and I can't do an OTA update.
What's more, later I found the build version is GRI40 ?!?! I think it should be GRI54.
Does anybody know how to fix this problem?
Check if you have /system/ recovery-from-boot.p and /etc/ install-recovery.sh .
If you do, leave them alone. If you don't, download the attached file and put them there.
Then boot into clockworkmod.
Fix permissions.
Power off, and boot normally.
Reboot into recovery.
Hopefully, you will see a triangle with an android. If you press power+volumeUp, you should get a menu with blue text.

[Q] TWRP nor CWM will successfully wipe/format data

First, I searched and read all relevant threads concerning this issue. The five threads that showed up in the search did not help me solve my issue.
So on to my problem. I can no longer flash any rom onto my device. I attempted to flash the first official CM10 nightly (which I recently found out was not flashing properly for others) and had no success. I simply got a black screen and nothing more. I eventually got back into TWRP (v2.2.1.4) to try and Nandroid restore, but I noticed that /data was not formatting and the restore failed. Every time I would slide the bar across to confirm the restore TWRP would reboot itself. I then flashed CWM (v6.0.1.0) and the same problems were there. After that I flashed an earlier version of TWRP and successfully restored the backup. I'm not 100% sure how it was successful. So I decided to try flashing another ROM and no go. Same problems. Anyone have any ideas? When I was using CWM I got the error message below.
Code:
E: unable to locate volume information
E: unable to open ums lunfile '/sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file'
E: unable to format data
I'm running Bugless Beast with Motley #219
I'm having similar, if not identical problems. After flashing TWRP 2.2.1.4, I tried flashing a rom and gapps; the tablet would boot endlessly into recovery. Nothing I did would do anything, so I flashed the stock image to start over. This time, I used CWM 6.0.1.0 touch to make sure that it wasn't the recovery that was causing the problem. However, now after flashing the rom and gapps, instead of booting into recovery, I got stuck at a black screen and had to hold the power button in order to get back to the bootloader.
Now, like you, it seems I can't flash any roms anymore. It's frustrating to say the least.

There is a bug with the Nexus 7 where you cannot access the recovery through the bootloader. To fix this, boot up into the bootloader on your nexus 7 and, without doing anything, plug it into the computer you used for rooting it and then select the option Restart bootloader and press the power button. Once it gets you back into the bootloader again select Recovery mode and press the power button. It will now get you into the recovery and once you're in recovery you can unplug your tablet from the computer. Note that this fix is not permanent and you will have to do this every time you wish to access your recovery via the bootloader (and this problem is not relevant to the OP's problem).

Thank You Very Much!!!
I am having much the same problem as the OP. I finally rooted my Nexus 7 using WugFresh's Nexus Root Toolkit. It seemed all went well. I chose to use TWRP in a first attempt to install a ROM (I was on rooted stock), and following the instructions for installing my chosen ROM I went into it to wipe cache, Dalvic Cache and data. Both cache and dalvic cache wiped without issue, but when I attempted to wipe /data TWRP simply reported that it failed. With that failing, I did not attempt to install a rom. I was still able to boot out of recovery, but even with repeated attempts wiping data always failed. Is any one aware of any solution or have any suggestions. Thank you!

[Q] Stuck trying to root nexus 10

This isn't my first android root but I'm stuck. I followed the video for rooting my Nexus 10. Got stuck in a boot loop but was able to flash cwm but still in boot loop. I tried doing the factory reset and now cwm is gone too and still stuck in boot loop. I tried reflashing cwm. When I try to access recovery I get the red triangle with ! on it. And I'm stuck in boot loop. I went here and tried to reflash recovery.img and no joy. Still no recovery access and no boot. ((
accidentally posted this in the samsung nexus forum #whoops
Boot back into recovery and press all 3 buttons (power, vol +, vol -) simultaneously until the menu comes up. The timing has to be very exact so don't worry if it takes 10+ tries. Then select factory reset and it should boot up properly.
I never could get CMW to stay. So I flashed TWRP as the recovery instead. Also follow wireroid advice about getting out of boot loop. If you want to SEE that method, check out the rooting N10 vid on youtube by qbking777.
some progress!
Ok I got back into the tablet with wireroid help YAH!!
I have a system update pending but when I tried to install it I got the red! with 'no command' ... after a near heart attack I did the factory reset again and got back to where I was before.
Now I need pointed in the right direction. So right now I'm unlocked but that's it. I have no custom recovery and presumably no su access because all I successfully did was unlock the bootloader.
I downloaded the nexux10 toolkit. Do I need to flash a recovery first? Do I try CMW again or go with TWRP? I've only used CMW in the past.
Do I ignore this Jelly Bean system update for now??

Try this toolkit by Wugfresh. http://www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
It's what I used and I went from locked and stock to unlocked, rooted, and with TWRP as my recovery in less than 15 minutes. I unlocked and rooted my GNex the "old-fashioned" way but wanted something easier for my N10.
Also, here's a YouTube video from QBKing77 walking you through the process using the above toolkit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtLvlrUDB04&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Since you're already unlocked you should be able to just skip to the part where root and a custom recovery are flashed (you'll end up with TWRP but you can always download ROM Manager and flash ClockworkMod if that's your preference).
Good luck.
I ran MSkip toolkit and it repaired everything. I got a failed on renaming my recovery images so my stock recovery images are just gone I guess? Anyway I'm good. Rooted and repaired thanks to Skips toolkit.
Thanks for all the help!

Stuck in fastboot; Where should I go from here?

Going to need some help on this one. Got root on stock through ioRoot22. Flashed twrp 2.6.3.3 through FreeGee. Backed up stock rom in twrp then reboot to stock rom to confirm boot
Went back into TWRP then Wiped device then attempted flashing Vanir.
Flashed Vanir zip
Flashed gapps zip
Attempted flashing kernel from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2638091
Came back with flash failed with an assert issue with loki, knowing I probably shouldnt have rebooted and restored my stock backup. I didnt think anything of it. Now Im stuck in fastboot and can gain access to download mode.Currently downloading the 11A tot/kdz and reading over this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448960
Would I need a stock recovery for the VS980 to complete download mode restoral? if so would anyone have it?
Ok so in the end through some patience, I was able to restore my stock rom by gaining access to TWRP through the normal "factory reset with stock recovery" method of booting. Was tricky because it wouldnt power off and bootlooping to fastboot. While in fastboot I held Vol - and Power so I can gain access again to TWRP. Restored the stock rom and all is well.

Ok so apparently there are some kernels/roms who have not updated their loki_patch file yet. From what I've been reading up which needs to be done for the roms to correspond to the updates. Am I correct?
