Has anyone considered this? One thing megapixels do is to give you some latitude (given no optical zoom) for digital zoom. 28mm is a fairly wide, wide angle lens. 50mm is considered a normal view, reproducing the view humanoids see.

I worry that One has sacrificed digital zoom considerably for low light performance.

50mm is only human view like if you got a full format sensor DSLR.

I'd pick better low light performance over digital zoom anytime

In a normal camera I'd agree, but phones have essentially no optical zoom. Still, not sure how it will work out in reality so I'm hoping the camera will be good overall - as long as it is I'll be buying this phone.
I really, really like the idea of low light photography. Were it not for AT&T trampstamp in US and mediocre audio, I would have got a Lumia 920 for camera. But living with a 28 mm (35mm film equiv) lens without much optical zoom latitude scares me. Heck, I may decide to get one anyway. But it scares me and I think it will keep away a lot of photo buffs.
doesnt need a thread, zoom is fail on ultra pixel without even asking
you know the trade off so make your choice

Zoom is even a fail on 13mp camera! Better crop pictures afterwards than using digital zoom! Well. There 4mp are in the bad.

Just forget about dig.zoom or crops in HTC Ones camera. I have Nokia N8 and I can do 2x zoom without significant quality degradation even when showing pictures on 60" fullHD TV so I will buy One only for moments and rather take my N8 to vacation
Digital zoom is crap no matter what device or megapixel camera.
I don't use digital zoom even at my conventional camera. Just optical is usable.

just cant agree... even minimal zoom can help a lot and dont need to totaly destroy the detail...many people still do crops and guess what? Crop is the dig.zoom in pink colour dont be so limited...even some more than hobby photographs use crop at home sometimes...trus me I know some of them and when you dont see ruined detail everything is allowed

Just wanted to share some macro shots I took today of a butterfly sitting on my porch. The sky was overcast with no sun. Shots were taken in Macro mode at 400 ISO. I would like some feedback from a photographer who knows what their doing. Let me know what you think of the Vibrant's camera.

Nice pics, I'm amazed the butterfly Hung out that long. Now as a photographer (decent) at best I would say the pics are great for a cell phone but nothing makes up for a good dslr camera and controlled lighting... that being said the pics look great for the hardware they were accomplished on
Pretty awesome for a cellphone.
I personally can't make my phone stable for some reason especially hitting the on screen shutter.
Nice pics! I am loving having such a good camera with me all the time. I took this the other afternoon in my backyard. Macro mode works nicely.
Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is macro mode? Looking through the settings in the camera I don't see a 'macro mode'. Granted, I do have the Captivate camera mod, but pretty sure all the options are the same.

I am no photographer but what macro mode does if you are going to be taking an extreme close-up picture of something. It makes the camera focus different so when the lenses is close to an object its not blurry.
I found it. Under 'focus mode' in the settings. Now time to play with it.

i think we should have a Camera Forum under Vibrant.. because it feels like we're going to be having alot of amatuer (but brilliant) Photography!!!
I'm going to start posting some pics i've taken on a new thread.. hopefullly ppl will share their brilliant photography!!
p.s. I know there is probably a Flickr group for all that goodness.. but i just feel at home in XDA
Really nice pictures guys
Here's a similar thread (not Macro Shots) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745704&highlight=photos maybe some of you want to pass by and post some pics in there.
400 ISO
The quality is quite decent for a camera lens the size of a small pencil eraser (if that).
Hy 4 all!
I have CM6.1 with Froyo on my Legend and I use the built-in camera app. My photos are always blurry and like so they were taken in a foggy, cloudy place. I have tried to increase the ISO, Deblur, decrease the lightness, increase the sharpness and etc... but nothing has helped. I think the LED flash is too strong. I dont know what more can I do. Has somebody else this problem? Is there a solution?
Thank you forwards!
Sent from my Legend using XDA App
Unfortunately, the camera sensor on Legend has it's limitation, if you do care the quality of photo you shot, you better carry a DC or a DSLR to solve this problem.
Yes, the flash is way to strong and built too close to the lens I think. The only thing this cam is good for is well lit day time shots. The flash will destroy any picture if used.
Sent from my Legend using XDA App
The flash is good as a flashliht though...I couldn't live without that...
I'm using Stock-like ROM with the original app and the quality is just bad too...
I don't find the Legend too bad, though I've never owned a really good camera so that might be why. I'm happy with the quality tbh, I used the app Vignette with the quality set to 'superfine'.

Well, yes, it can do a good picture while taking shot on a sunny day, although the shot is too light and unbalanced...Also the quality is good because of the resize - look at it in original an you will be surprised
Oh, come on, boys and girls.
What do you expect from a lens as big as a pinhead, a focal distance of maybe 4 mm and 5 mm sensor behind it?
It's good for a snapshot but you woulnd't want your wedding picture being taken with that.
Yeah, I use both Legend and Samsung Fascinate, the Fascinate's camera is much much much better, and flashlight mode is really good. I believe I can take wedding photos with my Fascinate. HTC's camera is never close to "good", always causes pink area on the photo.
Actually none of HTC's phone produce good quality pictures. NONE. I find the quality is acceptable for a phone. If you want the picture perfect quality then I don't think phones will cut it. It is good enough for my use though.
i had the device for 2 weeks and i noticed that the images quality are not good and when zooming it becomes so blured and not acceptable ...... any options or solution to this problem ??
One back up data and factory reset .
No cure = return to seller .
jje
well, how far are you zooming in? It's a "digital zoom" which is a phrase I hate. It doesn't really zoom in, it just crops the picture then enlarges it.

it will take just this little portion
and blow it up
great answer viper98
Unfortunatelly most people don't know the diference between optical and digital zooms...
xdafun4all, if you really want to use zoom without sacrificing quality, the best bet, is aproaching the subject you want on the picture, Using the zoom from the Galaxy S2, Iphone, Pixon, N8, or from any other phone (you name it, i doubt there hare phones out there that have optical zoom built in) will not make miracles...

+ Infinite to this.
Digital Zoom = BOGUS.
Yeah even most "high end" point and shoot cameras have **** zooms, even on my 7d I gotta watch for camera shake whilst zooming lol... Tho that's a different story.
Sent from my Samsung Seine
Touch the part of the image you need focus once for better focus and then take the picture without altering the position or the zoom.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Also just in case, check cameras settings, make sure you don't have focus set to macro.
This will most diffidently give you blurry pictures unless they are extreme close ups...
Hope this helps.

As said many times in this thread's 9 posts, digital zoom is pure bull****.Take the photo unzoomed and crop the part you want zoomed on your PC.It's the exact same thing.
The only camera that never gave me problems with digital zooming is my Nikon D7000.It was for testing purposes, there is no point in digital zooming with a DSLR but anyway. That thing costs about 1250 euros and takes photos at 16.6mpx,but that's another story.
Hi guys, just wanted to say that besides from picture size difference.
The 6mp and 16mp are no different. zooming capabilities and clarity etc are the same.
the only different is that one weights more than the other in size...
anyone?

Okay, well the size of it matters. The lense may be the same, but the sensor (actual camera) is completely different.

oh, i meant sensor xD not lense, sorry. So.. here is a pic, left is 16mp and right is 6mp, both were shot from the S5.

So, As we can see. There is little to no diffence when the image is far to mid zoom. but when closed zoom, almost zooming to the limits xD, the 16mp wins..
So I can say that, both are the same sht, 16mp wins when you tend to zoom to the limits.
This proves that the sensor in this thing does all the job but MP does help (do not know how) when zooming the image.
Sent from my SM-G900H using Tapatalk
Actually the Megapixels are used only to capture more details when zoomed however as you probably know the size of the Image file in 6 MegaPixels (16:9) is 3264x1836 currently most of the monitors are 1920x1080 so even with 6 Megapixels you will have twice the number of pixels then the once on your Phone or Monitor so when not zoomed any picture bigger then 2 megapixels will looks exactly the same on your monitor or phone. However when you zoom you will see that the bigger picture hase more details and it`s much crisp in lines.
So it really depends on what kind of photos you want but there is no need to always shoot with 16 megapixels.
I also think that this is the reason why iPhone always put 8 megapixels on there cameras you actually don`t need more then that as 8 megapixels are enough to shoot 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios photos with enough details to see on your screen.
The quality of the pictures including traits such as color reproduction and sharpness shouldn't be affected by the megapixel change. Only pixel count changes.
Sent from my SM-G900W8 using Tapatalk
wao, very informative, thanks guys

Pixel count is more about marketing then quality. Less but larger pixels would help low light performance but too many people believe pixels = quality.

A very satisfied Note 4 user. The camera is beyond fantastic for a phone camera. However, I would love to switch to an S6 because of the form factor (I don't really need a phablet, the big screen doesn't do anything for me). BUT only if the S6 camera is on par or better than the Note 4's. So I have been trying to get my hands on camera shootouts and found this very detailed one from GSMArena:
http://www.gsmarena.com/shootout_galaxy_s6_note_4_galaxy_s5_iphone_6-review-1229.php
Results seem inconclusive? Note 4 still scores higher on some aspects. In fact, the blind camera test says Note 4 scored higher on multiple dimensions.
http://www.gsmarena.com/galaxy_blind_camera_test-review-1228p2.php
I am kinda bummed out by this I really wanted the S6 to come out on top. What do you guys think?
The Note 4 pictures look more pleasing because the increased sharpening levels bring out more detail (even if that detail is extrapolated and not real detail). However, keep in mind these are blown up portions of a much larger photo. If you do look at the full size photos, the ones shot with good light all look nice, regardless of camera. You probably won't see much difference there. I would have liked to have seen more low light shots. It kind of drives me crazy that most of these photo shootouts are of landscapes and tsotchkes instead of people and kids. I'd also like to see some fast motion comparisons considering how fast the S6 camera is.

Good point. Zoomed out crops aren't always representative of real world results. I do also agree with you on the S6 camera supposedly being faster. The thing that bugs me about the Note 4 camera is the slow shutter speed - see below.

The Note 4 camera is awesome, for more reasons than just the sharpness though. The color reproduction is excellent.
