Use data while in call? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hady nexus two days. Noticed when I was in the middle of a call I tried using Google maps to locate a place. Maps said I need a data connection. I did also notice next toy signal icon the data sign was gone and a phone icon was next to it. I came from the sgs3 on Tmobile. Is there a setting or an APN that needs to be set? I was in a 3g/hspa+ are. Am on latest 4.2.2 update.

Yep.maybe it was the area. I started the call in a big stretch of the interstate that is only 2g. When I tried using maps. I was in the 4g area but maybe the towers hadn't switched over?

yeah, only happens when you are on 2G... can't have phone and data simultaneously

Correct, data disconnects as soon as you use voice on 2g.

That's what I was thinking but was going to be dissapointed if this phone didn't actually have that basic functionality of a smart phone. Lol.

Nexus 4 AT&T connection lag?

Not sure what to call this really. Every since I started using the nexus my at&t hspa connection is terrible. Almost like lagging and "timeouts" constantly.
Example: I'm in Google chrome with 4 full blue bars on hspa. I type in a web address and hit go. It takes 5-10 seconds before the up and down arrows on the signal bars show up and then it starts loading the page. For 5-10 seconds it does nothing.
Same issue in apps. For example, in dice with buddies, I'll submit my move and it won't take it for like 10 seconds. I've never had this issue with any of my previous phones.
Do you guys know of better APN settings or something? I'm just using whatever stock settings there were.
I think it's a radio issue, where it disconnects spontaneously
It's annoying as hell and I'm about to sell the phone because of it.
Search the forum for the best APN. I'm on ATT with the nexus 4 and have no issues.

I concur. I not only had to change my APN, but I also had to call AT&T to make sure I was provisioned on an HSPA account.

No issues with ATT hspa network here as well... May be your area has bad att hspa network?

Stay on hspa?

Hey this has been bugging me all day.
My network switches from 3G to H every few seconds almost even if I not moving. Is there a way to just pick it to one?

Don't blame me if you screw something up but goto your phone app and dial *#*#4636#*#* and begin to tinker.

Sounds like Fast Dormancy. It switches back and forth to save battery when there is no data use.
Suggest you do some reading on it!

It will change to H when using data, otherwise it will remain on 3G when idle. Mine also switches between the two regularly. I wouldn't worry about it.

No signal on T-Mobile

Im using T-Mobile and yesterday I got that empty service bars on the notification and it could only make emergency calls. Happens from time to time didn't think anything of it but I left the house and I'm still not getting any service. I was running paranoid android June 6 build so I tried switching ROMs and kernels but still no signal . of course I took out sim and rebooted the phone. I even put my sim on another phone and it work got signal and put there sim in my phone and wouldn't get any signal either. I ran out of options any help is greatly appreciated

This happened on my first nexus 4. Nothing fixed it. Nothing. Hopefully your situation is different. If nothing works, flash back to stock and start the RMA process. Google said it was a hardware failure with mine by the way.

Did your happen when you first got it or after you had it for awhile? And what's the RMA process

The periodic loss of signal was there since day. I still have it on my new one. Others do as well, but one day it went out and never came back on. I believe it was a different issue than just random signal loss. Google said hardware failed in it. You have to contact Google to start an RMA. I'm also not implying that your signal won't come back on at some time either. Personally I would flash everything back to stock. Go to a t mobile store and get a new Sim card and if no signal still then contact Google

Under settings, then data, then mobile networks, then to network operators.
let it search, even if it doesn't find anything or errors.
Then click choose automatically.
If you frequently travel out of 3g/H areas, you need that checked or the phone won't roam from tower to tower. you will get no signal.
Also, if that don't work, you can try clicking on a network it finds, and let it register, your signal may come back.
This is a common problem with those that don't live in big cities or near full strength 3g/h areas.
The phone doesn't handle tower handoffs well. Crappy LG modems.

I'm currently going through the RMA process over virtually the exact same issue. However, I've been running franco's nightlies lately and up until he restored the HSIC/wifi stuff to stock in r154 I was actually experiencing less data drops and rapid tower swapping (constantly going from 3g to H and back rendering consistent data inoperable). *shrug* I feel as if it's something in the hardware on the cusp of failing because sometimes it does it more and sometimes it does it less. It's rather weird. I'm also on T-mobile towers through an MVNO (Straight Talk).
I just cancelled and switched to ATT go phone.
I have RMA'd 2 devices, tried multpie new simcards, relflashed, tried new radios, and nothing worked.
It no longer switches from 3g to H on ATT network.
It stays in H constantly.
Also, no more signal drops or loss of signal.
I have 100% signal all the time now.
The data is a little more expensive, but worth it for the coverage so far.
It's not your phone, it's the tmobile network.

[Q] network mode changes by itself. Should it do that?

Im running cm 10.1.2 it works great I live were tmobile has lte. so I flash LTE radio and that works great. my apn is tmobel us LTE and my preferred network mode is lte/gsm/wcdma. Sometimes when I drive outside lte coverage zone or in on a weak spot my preferred network mode will change to csm/wcdma. Is this normal? I was driving and I just lost signal the other day Im guessing this is why. I got a screen shot of a app that shows I get lte or hspap with lte/gsm/wcdma. Should I not get both hspap and lte with this setting. Im guessing the phone could not get lte so it changed the profile? Can it do that?. When I was out of the coverage area tried to change it back to let/gsm/wcdma but it defaulted to csm/wcdma.. On reboot it defaults to lte/gsm/wcdma. so i know its working thanks for reading my thread.
I'm pretty sure that is normal. My phone does the same.

So when your phone changes profile when it gose into a lte zone dose it drops signal or any thing?
I want to say mind dose for a second as the profile changes then if I go back into a LTE zone it will change back. But im not sure as I have only been running this build for a few days and I mostly stay in a LTE zone.
Yes basically disconnects for a sec then changes.

Just wondering why that is? does lte/gsm/wcdma not support hspap? Because my app screen shot told me on that profile i get hspap and lte .
I'm not really sure. But I do not understand why the nexus 4 handles this Network change so slowly. It's annoying at times.

3G disconnects when on the phone

It it normal for my mobile internet to disable when I'm talking on the phone? And when I cut off it comes back

It's always done it for me so I'm assuming it's normal

I'll also say my old Galaxy Nexus and HTC One X did the same - I'm almost 100% sure it's normal behavior in Android
If I'm not mistaken it's because your using 3g to call someone. Now if you were on 4G and try to call somebody most likely it would still say 4G on the top notification bar because it's using your non LTE band to call somebody and allows you to use LTE for data purposes so you would be able to hop on the internet and browse at the same time on a call. Now I know with AT&T you can call somebody and browse the internet while on 3G.
