Hello,
I have a Nexus 7 32GB WiFi, using 4.2.2 stock ROM, rooted and unlocked boot loader. I wiped device when 4.2.2 was released and started fresh again.
For a few weeks now I have noticed when using Chrome browser after closing or letting browser run in background when looking at my home screen I can see part of the browser like a shadow showing on the screen.
Here is a picture of it, does anyone know what this is and is it a hardware problem or something ?
Some times the shadow is much noticeable than other times.
If you look carefully you will see the shadow.
Thanks for any help.

Not a hardware problem. It goes by a couple of terms, ghosting, persistence, and if permanent screen burn-in.
It happens when you have the same screen up for a long time. If it fades, It's persistence, and does no real harm. If the 'ghost' does not fade it's burn-in, and is permanent damage.
Keeping your seen at the lowest brightness that suits your current need will minimize this, and help prevent actual burn-in.

So this only Happens when I'm on Google chrome and I've noticed that ocassionally that the screen flickers, its not crazy annoying but definitely distracting. Have any of you had this problem?
Hopefully any of you aren't epileptic.

I totally thought that I had either 1. developed serious eye problems or 2. broke my brand new toy At least it's not just me having this problem

Hopefully the next update will resolve this problem.
so set and wait.
So I should just wait for a fix and not return it over and over to try to find a good one. It has a year warranty.
I see it too!

I turned off automatic brightness and I think that solved it. I think it was flickering when it was changing brightness.
its still there with auto off.
And with the brightness up but it so slight u have to be ocd like I am about my stuff to see it. But its easy to tell its not hardware because games like sonic CD are beautiful.

It happens to mine when its on the lowest brightness setting of when "auto brightness" is on. For now I've just set the brightness to max so I don't have deal with all the flickering.. for now.

With my settings set to Automatically lock (immediately after sleep) and power button instantly locks with a visible patter screen lock, my Nexus 7 on wake-up [pushing the power button immediately] either right after an invalid pattern code (where device then sleeps) or waiting a few seconds with no activity until the device sleeps (where the Nexus 7 fades to a black screen) will have a delay in bringing up the lock screen OR sort of flicker presenting some sort of black and white bar lines background at the bottom half of the screen for a split second before bringing up the lock screen. Is this normal or it is in fact a defect?
Thanks in advance!
Not sire about that I have seen it in 3rd patty apps on all devices before. But the flicker we are seeing is like it changing the brightness up and down.

As does mine. I think people think it goes away when not on auto, because the "low" setting is about 20-25% and auto will often bring it lower than that, making the flickering worse.
At medium brightness the problem is almost, almost, non-existant.
It's also not just in chrome as some say, just most noticable on chrome's white backgrounds. I've noticed it in any app with lighter, brighter colors. I just exchanged my Nexus 7, and the new one has the exact same problem. This leads me to think the software problem is the most correct answer.
I get it every once in a while. Full brightness set, no automatic. Ill wait for a fix, doesn't bug me too bad.

I suspect it to be a software problem because in game it looks great. Plus in a new device like this software problems go with the territory.

And mine as well I noticed my screen flickered when my batt was getting down to 10% and my brightness level was at about 1/3. But now its charged and I don't see it flickering yet. I don't know...with Chrome having a bug (lags when scrolling) and the flickering screen...I may be returning my unit? I really hate to because aside from my issues, it's an awesome device!
Don't take it back they well fix it with a update.

So yesterday I was messing around with rooting and setting up CWM. It was quite frustrating, but not for the usual reasons: turns out that my Nexus 7 likes to turn the backlight completely off during parts of the boot process (the google and X logos) and always in CWM so it looks like it is off when it in fact is doing something. To be able to see anything I have to shine a very bright light (using Torch on my phone right now) on the display. However during normal usage, there are absolutely no issues with the backlight.
Any Ideas?
I can try to take pictures of it later, but I don't have a very good camera.
Bump. Anybody?
Same problem here. No idea why it happens.
I contacted Google and they're going to replace it.

Return it to stock bootloader and ROM to rule the changes didn't introduce issues.
I did, it's definitely a hardware issue
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I don't mind it actually since it only happens during boot. Not much of a problem here.

If you intend to flash custom roms it's a huge problem lol.

I saw someone ask this in a nexus circle on G+ and though maybe it was just his device but a few people posted also claiming the same so tried it myself and noticed it also.
If you put your phone on max brightness and go to an app that leaves the logo on the screen like G+ in the upper left hand corner, imagine FB or whatever else will work the same, and stay there for about 2 minutes then switch to a dark screen(clock) the image is still visible in the corner. It stays there for a few minutes too, then its gone. Is this normal of IPS displays or even LCD for that matter? I mean its very circumstantial, you would have to at max bright and on that type of app for a long time and then to a dark screen to ever notice it but if you went longer under them conditions could it potentially burn in permanently?

This happens on my tablet (TFT LCD), but not on my Nexus 4. It shouldn't cause burn in, LCDs don't burn in

Hi there ! The one asking the question on G+ was me !
I'll post a video on youtube and open a poll about it here !
P.S. it seems that many people do suffer from the problem (cf. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2228013&page=4) Therefore I won't be making the video (I think)...
It happens to me all the time. Especially noticeable at night when using it in bed so it doesn't even have to be at maximum brightness.

Nexus 7 screen flickers on low brightness becoz i use the device at lowest possible brightness to save battery but screen flickers while using wifi specially on webpages having white background

this issue has already been discussed, a simple search and you would've found the solution. Just turn off wi-fi optimization and no more flicker

It's the Tegra smart dimming causing the flickering. Apps like Franco Kernel Updater or Tegra Prism can toggle this on or off. Might be better to manually toggle it by editing a file if you want to avoid paying for an app, but I don't know it to hand.

You could also download trickster mod and set it with that. Has paid and free versions.

Smart dimmer is NOT the problem, why do people perpetuate this nonsense... It is some interaction between the wifi and Backlight and is only really visible when wifi signal is low, background is white, and in the dark or near. Meh.

Turn up the backlight a little, I personally don't even notice it much anymore.
I fixed it by lifting the antenna ground with a piece of scotch tape. 7 months and still going strong.

I had this problem. It was very common around the time the nexus 7 was released.
From what I remember, it's a hardware issue with low WiFi signal interfering with the backlight, as someone above said.
Your options as I recall are to crack it open and attempt fixing yourself, voiding your warranty. Or just send it off. I sent mine off and received a new replacement. It was obviously a common complaint because they didn't even enquire further after I briefly described the problem.
Send it off, save yourself the headache of a hack job gone wrong.
