[Q] Cover open screen on app? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know the Nexus 7 doesn't have a proximity sensor but is there an app that will turn on the screen when opening the cover using the brightness sensor?

AW: [Q] Cover open screen on app?
Why not use magnets?

You don't need an App, just a "Smart Cover" case...

Could you suggest a good one with a link please?

Ofcourse mate:

I have that one in red.
Absolutely mint case!!
Smart cover works every time, magnets aren't to strong so you can bend the cover back and still hold the tablet, without the tablet going back to sleep (if that makes sense)
Very comfortable and adds hardly any bulk to your tablet.
Hope this helps

There's a magnet inside the lower left corner of the tablet that turns off the screen when another magnet is placed near it (such as one contained inside a case), and turns the screen back on when the magnet is removed. Very widely known feature, and there are tons of cases out there for the Nexus 7 that use it. My suggestion is the Blurex Ultra-Slim

Smart cover - Disable the sleep feature?

I purchased a case that has the smart cover functionality. The manufacture emailed me stating that they are aware of an issue with the magnet causing it the N7 to go to sleep when you flip the cover so it's on the back of the device. They will rework the case to fix the issue, however, is it possible to disable the sleep function that is triggered from the smart cover? I'd be perfectly fine with just pressing the power button to sleep or power on the screen.
Remove the magnet from the case or put a piece steel between the case and back of the nexus.
If you have the poetic hard cover, thats what i had to do.

Have you tried using the ol' paper clip trick? Can't be that hidden.
The magnet on the nexus 7 is on the left side about an inch up from the bottom left corner.
That should help you find where it is on the case.

You sir are a genius, I can't believe I didn't think of that.
With that being said, yesterday, I received the reworked case (I just received the original 2 days prior) and now there's no issue with the sleep. Really love this case now.
Is it possible to disable the sleep function by changing a system file?
I tried googling for "smart cover paper clip trick" but din find anything.
What is the paper clip trick??

Ah ok, so this trick is to find where the magnet is, I thought it was to fix this flip to the back triggering N7 to sleep issue.

Sounds good where did you get it from?
I know the main issue with magnets near computers is that they can wipe the disk, because hard drives use magnitism to store bits. Flash doesnt, and is non-volitile. so you wont be messing with any of the memory. Also, it messed with old tv's because magnets were how they aligned the image (i think).
The nexus uses neither of these. Also, it has built in functionality that USES the magnet, as well as a decent amount of EMI shielding.

I myself have a i-BLASON case came int he mail about 1 week after my nexus
works good yet I notice that the left side tends to "hug" the 7 a little to much so I have to push the case back so
I can get the touch to work on left edge. When i bought it there was a kick ass stylis in the picture just to get a
cheesy 3 for a buck stylis.
Bah it still works,
But the funny thing is I closed it up day and put it on my desk with out thinking. Later on I picket it up
and it felt heavier. I look and there was my screwdriver heads and a few other magnets stuck to it HA.

Looking for magnetic car mount system for N4

I have seen some magnets that attach to the case of a phone then connect to a metal plate on the car or one that connects to the vents of the car. Does anyone make one strong enough to securely hold the Nexus 4 with a heavy duty case?
I have Tetrax Xway http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awh6QP8-BBE

Can you tell me the diameter of the circle that goes onto the back of the phone? The case I have for my Nexus 4 has circles on the back of it where the silicone skin sticks through.

Yes, it looks like it sticks on with adhesive to the back of the phone.
Yes that is exactly how it works. The adhesive does not work on some cases so I have sometimes used crazy glue. I've tried a lot of systems for in car mounting and this is by far the best in my opinion.

X-Way is great for using vents as your mounting point, but if you want to mount it ANYWHERE you want, then get the FIX-WAY.
I have something simple and a lot cheaper, you might want to consider.
Cellet Magnetic Holder
Here's a youtube video which might explain it better:

I can attest that the magnet is extremely strong. The phone will not move at all through any bumps when driving. You stick the magnet to the back of your Nexus 4. I never took off the protective back skin that came with the nexus, so I didn't mind sticking the magnet to the back of the phone. On top of that I use the Diztronic protective case covering the back of the phone. Since that case covers the entire back of the phone, it covers the magnet and you can't even tell I have the magnet on at all. the magnet still works great through the protective case and still extremely strong.

From the reviews it is larger, but stronger maybe. I ordered one in case I can use them together or the other one is not strong enough.
I built a magnetic car dock for the nexus4 that I'm now selling.

Here's a video of one of the prototypes showing how it works. The production version works the same except the magnet is stronger and it has cutouts for headphones, mic, camera, and speaker.

I like the magnet idea but the location would disable inductive charging as well

There is a metal plate at the back of the phone or underneath the case....not a magnet...
Metal may have a better effect on inductive charging....rather than hampering it...but this is just my guess...it may disable inductive charging as well....

Everyone in my family has one. it's awesome

Thin case that only "grabs" top and bottom?

Right now Im running a bumper (well, the girlfriend, who is a phonebreaker, is running it because she is waiting for her substantial case to arrive) but I was wondering if there were other options.
Most times Im running naked and only using the bumper in situations when I thought there was real risk. The main reason is because i love the cascading touch screen, it feels much better working on the phone without my thumb crashing into the lip of a bezel or case when swiping/typing.
So my question is, has anyeone seen a case that clips onto the phone holding only onto the top/bottom (and corners) but maybe only going up half or less of the sides, as to not interfere with the drop off effect of the screen?
I think if I had something like that I would be more willing to run the case more often. I know it couldn't be a bumper, it would need a back to support the sides and I am prepared to live with not seeing the blingy back.
I've been looking for this too! Haven't found a case like that yet...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
I asked exactly this same question, and the answer is that no one has made such a case yet. However, I did buy the rearth ringke slim case, which grips the sides, but very shallow, and it is pretty good. You don't bump the sides until you are about three fourths of the way down the bevel.

Decently Strong magnet + LG G2?

I bought this mount for my old galaxy s4, , and it worked fine.
It is designed so that you put a piece of high carbon metal in between the phone and the case, then you place it on the magnet and it sticks. It is a truly awesome dock, but I have a question. My S4 would not stick to it without the metal plate in the case, this phone will stick right to it without a case or the metal piece. This worries me.
Has anyone used a similar dock to this one, or can somebody let me know if this will damage my phone? I would just use it, but I heard that the camera's image stabilization is magnetic or something? I am hoping that somebody can give me some info regarding this.

I also found out that QI chargers, like my phone supports, also contain a fairly strong magnet to hold the phone in position. The reason my phone was sticking to the magnet dock is because the QI receptor on the back of the phone (inside the back plastic) is magnetic so it can stick to the QI charging base.
Based on my research and my own experience, I am going to assume that it is safe considering I know 3 people using the dock have not had issues and my SGS4 was fine after a few months. I guess I answered my own question. I guess I was just looking for somebody who has used the dock for a longer period of time.
Thanks

I use tetrax. Not sure if you have seen them. But I have been using them since my Iphone. And currently using it on my diztronic case.
However, you must place the magnet as closest to the buttons on the back side or your wireless charging wont work..
I recently purchased a similar mount that the OP posted, but with a suction mount. I haven't used it yet but will post back after using it.

Thanks arson. I don't use wireless charging, at least not yet. The dock I have has about a 1" by 2" super thin piece of metal to put in between the case and the phone. The dock technically stuck to the qi receptor, but I didn't want to do it that way. What I am trying to say is that my metal piece is going to definitely cover up some of the qi receptor, plus I'd rather thave the magnet farrtger away from my camera if possible

If the flap\cover on your case triggers the window widgets and wakes\suspends the phone then, yes, it does have a magnet in it.
Not sure how far back the practice goes, but my OG Droid used the same method to trigger Car Home when inserted into the car dock. I took the magnet out of the dock to prevent Car Home from launching.
Small high power neodymium magnets.

I have been using a Mountek (the guys who invented this) CD slot mount for three months or so, on Samsung Galaxy S3, Nexus 7 and LG G2.
No issues with magnets on any of the devices. You can wiki the topic.
Screen issues? No, we don't have CRT displays.
Storage? No, flash memory is not magnetic.
Compass? Maybe, hasn't affected me (Co-Pilot Standard, Google Navigation) YMMV
Location Services / GPS? No, GPS uses satellites.
Speakers? It has its own magnets.
Camera? If mechanical zoom, perhaps. Digital zoom, no.
While one can't believe everything on the internet, the consensus is overwhelming that magnets generally do no harm to modern smartphones. I'd be more worried about wireless charging, yet it's becoming mainstream.

You're right! I have located one small magnet
Now that I've used the iMagnet suction mount for a few days I can chime in. It didn't affect my GPS signal and it didn't affect my camera. I didn't purchase a QI charger for my Verizon G2 so I can't comment on its affect. But I do love the flexibility this mount provides since it doesn't use any gripping arms. I'm using an Incipio Dual Pro case with the round magnet between the inner and outer shell. It fits perfectly.
Sent from my VS980 4G using xda app-developers app
I have been using a QI charge rand the suction based mount like this.
Everything has been working flawless. No issues with GPS/DATA/ETC... everything still works.
No need to clip or adjust the holder for the mount. Its just put up and it works.
The only major downside? Well, two or three actually..
CONS:
1. The metal piece is small and thin. But it will still affect the way you use your case. Most cases are built to have nothing between case and phone. Even putting that slim metal piece makes it a little challenging to make just about any case sit flush. Including the Quick Window case, basic TPU case (which has worked the best), and my new incipio case.
2. Because of the metal, it usually affects NFC because it is right there. There might be a sweet spot to make it work with the metal there, but I usually have to take my phone out of the case or at least remove the metal. Main reason the cheap TPU cases work well. East on and off.
3. Pretty much the same as #2, but the metal also affects QI charging. Again, there might be a sweet spot, but I havent found it.
If you don't use NFC or use a QI charger and can deal with A LITTLE ill fitting on the case you own, then I think this is one of the best mounts out there.
I did not stick the metal I just have it loose in the case so I can remove it if necessary.
