[SOLVED] Some apps crash & restart on Android 4.2.2 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I have a Nexus 4 with stock Android 4.2.2, rooted with wugfresh and without any custom recovery (just root and BusyBox). And haven't tuned nor removed any critical service/system app. Just rooted and stock recovery.
I've detected some crashes on certain apps, mostly games.
For example: it happens to me in Angry Birds Star Wars. Just before the main screen, when app shows you an ad, angry birds star wars just crashes and reboots. If I'm fast and tap the "X" to close the add, app does not reboot.
Another apps I've detected that "crash & restart" issue in my phone:
- Candy Crush Saga (when connecting to my facebook account)
- Real Football 2013 (can't even reach main screen)
- Pudding Monsters (can't even reach main screen)
That issue seems to happen when app tries to show a "popup window" with ads or something (maybe connecting to other apps/websites). But other app games, like Royal Revolt! or Vector, show an add with a popup too, and they don't hang up and restart.
Tried all: uninstalling "dashclock widget", uninstalling "lockscreen policy" app, and other minor apps ... but nothing worked.
I have one friend with a Nexus 4. I've asked him to download and try Angry Birds Star Wars on his phone, he said it worked fine and normal, no crashes no restarts. He has 4.2.2 too. So what must I do? Wait to Android 5.0 to see if issue is gone?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Sounds like a fundamental program on your phone is corrupted.
You can try grabbing LogCats whenever an application closes, read them, and see what happened. alogcat from market will do.
I would personally backup all your data to your computer and go all the way back to stock. (again). Follow this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312
Note: My phone didn't boot the first time after completing this guide, so I had to go to ... stock recovery > vol-/pow > select recovery > vol+/pow to reveal menu > factory reset > erase cache.
edit: did you mess with anything in developer options? make sure HW overlays and GPU rendering are off.

No, I didn't mess with anything like HW overlays or GPU rendering in developer options. I bet for some system process/file got corrupted when got my phone rooted, then OTAupdated, then rooted again.
As it's not a critical error (and I can live without playing angry birds star wars and other games) I think I'll wait unitil Android 5.0 update. Maybe then this issue will be gone. If not, then I'll backup data, reflash stock android 4.2.2 and try again.
I tried installing logcat but as I'm not an expert I can't see anything unusuall on the log. Tried installing, then running crashing&restarting apps, then looking at the log: just says "process XXX has died". But as I said, no conclusions (for my dev level). Here's one shot of that:
Thanks anyway!

SOLVED!
That issue was due to "Don't keep activities" option on Settings > Developer Options. If it's ON, then when an app calls some popup, system closes app, so then system restarts it ... and there got your loop.

[HELP] "process status bar has stopped..." - flashed framework-res.apk

Hi guys
I was trying to change my battery icon using the file here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13688277&postcount=87
I overwrote the original framework-res.apk and the reboot.
But now as soon as my phone starts and tries to show the home screen i get a dialog box saying:
"The application %1$s (process %2$s) has stopped... The process Status bar has stopped unexpectedly Please try again".
It then immediately restarts, i cannot get in root explorer to be able to change the framework-res.apk back to original.
Can someone please help! The USB-Debugging is not on i think , but i can't get into the settings to enable it if its off.
What should i do. someone please help.
Rooted SGSII running KE2.
Do i have to follow this guide :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13712988&postcount=1
and flash stock SGSII rom and basically start from scratch with all my apps and settings ? (I really hope not).
please tell me there is an easier way to fix this.
Go to settings > applications > Manage applications > All. Find status bar in the list and press force close and then clear data. Reboot.

I cannot do that. As soon as the Main UI displays (homescreen) , one second after that the phone reboots. homescreen appears frozen too, menu/home/back buttons don't do anything.

I had this problem too, it ****ed up my whole phone and I had to flash stock rom and lost all data. Didn't had usb debugging on
I don't recommend this battery mod or any changing to the framework

i guess the price to pay for being a Android modding rookie is painful manual restoration of how the phone looked!
I hope Market will recognize all the apps i bought (20+) otherwise that's alot of money ($100+) gone down the drain !

You won't lose your purchases, they are tied to your google account even if you switch device.
great, so i went ahead and flashed a stock rom using previous mentioned guide above, strange thing is EVERYTHING is intact! i was under the impression that everything will get wiped out but the only thing i had lost was root and that easily fixed . i am so relived

This is because the SGS2 has /data completely separate from the system.. it only makes a fresh /data if /data is missing. So when you flash just the system, your data is left alone.
thanks for the info RyanZA, i'm glad they way it this way otherwise i would have been screwed.

Frequent force close of system applications

Hello
Android version: 2.3.3
Running stock ROM with XWKF3 with default Samsung launcher. (let me know if further info is required)
From few days GS2 has been starting to force close the system applications out of blue. Not had this issue since 3 months. Basically I would get a force close of Google services initially (pic attached) which would throw that pop up in a contionus loop. When I later check out others apps the following applications also gave me the force close error:
1. Internet (doesn't even let me see the force close error. The box appears for less than a milliseconds and closes off)
2. Email
3. Gmail
4. Messaging
5. Social Hub
6. Gtalk
7. Tasks
8. YouTube
9. Wireless will not connect and it tries to scan and later switches off automatically.
10. TW launcher (not all the time, the home screen will restart itself on a contionus loop - effect similar to when we clear through RAM from task manager.
As u can see the above apps are mostly the system apps. Specifically android apps rather than touchwiz.
Here is what I have tried:
1. Try exiting all apps and clearing the RAM through task manager. But still the above mentioned applications force close.
2. so the only way was for me to switch off and the on the device. However this does not look like a permanent solution since the problem appears again like two or three times a day.
I would also like to point out that may be the issue issue is only when the wireless and is turned on. I can't be sure here completely.
Also after I restart the device oddly everytime the device temp shows as 39° C and then cools down.
I have not rooted my device at all and also have not installed any application which does a system wide changes (oh except Samsung app update and Samsung mobile security from the Samsung app store)
Just not able to know wot is causing the problem
So could anyone please help me out to as to solve this issue? Is some kind of virus/malware being attacked? Is the device suffering from faulty hardware?
Gald to provide any further info if required.
Thanx.
Have you tried fixing permissions a lot of time that solves FC's, if not id recommend doing a full wipe.

Thanx for the reply. What does fixing permission actually mean? also would I have a risk of killing my device when doing a full wipe? would I void my warranty? is it same as doing an hard reset on Nokia phones?
sorry for so many questions, this my first android device and got to get used to troubleshooting stuff :-/

Fixing permissions fixes problems often associated with Force Close errors.
boot into recovery > advanced > fix permissions > reboot system now.
if fixing permissions doesn't work you should do a full wipe and you should be ok then.
I would definitely root your device if i were you most people do you can so much more, you can always "unroot" if you do need to send it for repairs and are worried about warranty.

Hello
I tried to use the fix permission options. I went to recovery mode by switching off the device and holding down the volume up key + home key + power button and releases them once the Samsung logo appeared. I got the following screen. Link:
(there was an error attaching the pic
However I cannot see the "advanced" option though :-/ help?
And now after reading your post I'm actually thinking of rooting my device. Once I have time for it. Thanx for the advice on that.
Well it looks like issue is solved. I dint get option of "fix permissions" but by accident choose the fourth option "wipe cache partition" out of curiosity. And from that day on dint have any force close issues.
Just wanted to add that i too experienced this. Fixed it with a factory reset as i didn't think of wiping cache. I was not rooted, running KI1 2.3.4.
Force Close fix??
I have the same problem, I've tried everything again the same

[Q] Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped

Sorry if this is in the wrong place but I've looked everywhere for an answer and i cannot find one,
I have a rooted Nexus 4 with Franco Kernel and Xylon ROM on giffgaff
Whenever i receive a call i cannot answer it because this message shows up and i have to click 'OK' which hangs up, also at the end of outbound calls it shows this message.
This message only occurs when i call/ get called.
I have tried clearing the data from 'Phone' with no avail, also updated my ROM and Kernel. I have reset my Mobile Networks/Access Point Names to default but still this problem occurs. I will be grateful if anyone help and fixes this, Thanks
Hi, I had this problem too and searching around I found a solution that fixed this problem twice for me:
Go to settings -> applications -> all and go to Phone. Clear data & clear cache. Do the same thing with Phone/Messaging Storage apk. You will loose your contacts but it fixed it.
I have my phone contacts sync with my google account so in 10 secs my address book was back and no more "process" problem.
Apparently some kind of corrupted contact causes this, so every time the phone tries to access your contacts and match the phone number, the process crashes.
I hope this helps.
Best,
Ive cleared the Phone data but Phone/Messaging Storage is all blanked out so i cannot click on it? :/ Any ideas?

Were you able to clear your address book? In the end it seems that is what fixes it. Try to delete all your contacts and reboot. Than you can tell if it helps. As far as I know, the next option is to factory reset. That's what I did the first time I got the error, but later it came back because of some bad contact. And if you do that test it by calling yourself from another phone before adding contacts.

I have cleared all my contacts manually and rebooted the phone but still it comes up with the message, Im thinking that i need to clear the data from Phone/Message Storage but i probably clicked force stop on it before and i need to 'Start' it again.
I would just factory reset and flash the rom again.
Honestly i havent got a clue what happened but i did a factory reset and my custom Kernel and ROM were still there and i tried calling myself and it fixed it, somehow :/ Thanks guys

Redownload and reflash the ROM including Gapps, if it still doesn't work then try a different ROM. Make sure you re-download the ROM though, since you may be getting this error due to corruption that occurred when it was downloaded.
Edit:
Oh you fixed it. Never mind.
There's a chance my error started because I flashed the. 33 radio after the ROM and gapps. The correct way is first the radio, than RoM, than gapps. I don't know if that's your case, but be aware of that.
have this occasionally on cm10.1 flashing different nightlies.

This problem is mainly caused by corrupt or incompatible APN predefined settings. Try clearing all of them and just using the one you need.
To speed up the process, navigate closing the error as many times as required to the apn list, and once in the list, toggle airplane mode ON, that will stop the force close to show up, now delete all the entries, and toggle off airplane mode.

First thank you for the fast response.
I have just updating my rom (from cm 10 to cm 10.1) and when the system starts after the end of booting the error appears.
I have activated the airplane mode and no changes the error is continuing and when I go to settings --> the press on more in networks it says: "unfortunately the process com.android.settings has stopped".

[Q] Unfortunately, Settings has stopped.

Hey guys, new owner of the Verizon Note 3.
Love the phone and everything is fast and great.
I'm on 4.3 MJE and rooted. Safestrap installed with no slots, just the stock. Wanted to be able to make backups and have the recovery option.
Just this morning my Note 3 stopped letting open the settings from any angle. From notification panel or anywhere else.
It immediately closes and shows the message "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped"
I tried rebooting to safestrap and wiping cache and dalvik cache.
no fix.
I have some system apps frozen with Titanium backup, but have defrosted the ones I very recently froze to see if that helped. And still not able to get into settings.
Any advice? I'm sure you all appreciate how much of a pain in the butt it is to factory reset or flash and start over! I hate reconfiguring my apps and settings! So if that can be avoided in any way I'd be soooo happy!
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you need to reboot after unfreezing; you didn't mention if you did that.
The best way to avoid this kind of situation is to make Nandroid backups before you start tw3aking. Sure they are huge, but look at your situation now. You can always delete them after some time after it is clear they are not needed, but you can't create them out of thin air when it is too late.
So, before you make things even worse with further experimentation, make a Nandroid right now of your semi-broken setup. If you break things even further trying to fix this current problem, at least you can go back to where you are right now. You might want to make an TiBu market app/data backup as well and get the TiBu backups onto external media in case you need to go all the way back to Odin.
Dump your logcat after the "Settings" crash. There will be further clues there (possibly undecipherable, but hey.) Post that up to pastebin.com for others to look at if you don't grok it. (but scrub any personal data in there first). If you don't already have USB debugging turned on, you can use a terminal emulator or a Logcat capture app.
# logcat -c (to clear the log)
( force the settings crash)
# logcat -v threadtime > /sdcard/my_logcat_after_settings_crash.txt
There is a chance that it is something simple, e.g. one of the sqlite databases in /data/data/com.android.settings is corrupted, but the various Activities that are launched from underneath "Settings" touch stuff all over the /data partition (e.g. /data/misc and elsewhere). From where you are right now, there is no way to know whether your problem is due to:
(1) a problem in /system
(2) a problem in /data
(1+2) both
your turn.
Restored nandroid backup
Thanks for all the tips!
With some reluctance I managed to move to a much older backup i forgot I made and the settings works fine again!
those backups are a life saver.
Thanks again.
tw3ak.
Glad you got it fixed.
I had something similar happen last night - I accidentally fat-fingered a language change, and every time I went back in to fix it (Settings -> Language & Input), Settings would crash. (This is on MJ7)
Took a while to manually figure out how to fix it (Doh, /data/property/persist.sys.language) without restoring a backup. I didn't mention it here right away because your symptoms sounded different - Settings was crashing for me only when I went in to the Language & Input sub-menu)
Try using SS 3.65 and not the newest version and see if that fixes the problem.

You can try going to Safe Mode:
1. Reboot your device
2. Hold down the Volume Down key while booting up
3. You are now in Safe Mode
4. Go into Settings -> Apps, then find the overlay you think is messing up and uninstall
I'm afraid it makes no difference

OK, I read this 'tutorial' here on XDA. Have not tried myself but see if it helps. If it works please report back. It would be nice to known for future reference:
How to recover if the above doesn't work? (Credits to Evozi)
You will have to boot up in Safe Mode (comes default on every device)
1. Turn on screen and press power button. It will show "Shutdown", "Restart", "Emergency Mode"
2. Turn on "Emergency Mode", keep spam the checkbox so you can tick the checkbox to proceed the agreement. (phone is super lagging)
3. While you are in emergency mode, you have very limited access. Open any system app and go to recent task list.
4. Long press the app task, press the info icon and app detail page will appear.
5. Hit the back button and it will show your whole app list.
6. Find your overlay and remove all its storage and phone permissions.
7. Deactivate Emergency Mode and now you are back to TouchWiz.
8. Uninstall the overlay app.
Can't check the agreement with th fc window all the time, any trick for that?
