So for my very first post here on XDA, I though I'd contribute. I would have posted this in the developer forum or even as a reply to Kindle Fire Utility thread, but I got the standard "you're a noob" and can't post here message.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
Kindle Fire Utility tries to install its own drivers, but I got an interesting message claiming
"The current language is not supported by the device driver installation wizard"
And manually trying to install the driver through the hardware resource manager will tell you that either the driver file is corrupt and can not be installed or that the driver file is not designed for the device... ie... It's basically useless.
The solution was to install obtain adt-bundle-windows-x86x_64-20130219 which I either got from Amazon's developers page or Google Android's developers page. To be honest, I was trying to obtain so much information about my Amazon Kindle Fire (1st Generation) and how to unlock it, from so many places that I'm not 100% sure from which source I got the correct driver.
What I am sure about is the driver provided by Kindle Fire Utility didn't work for me. And I don't expect Amazon or Google to make it easy for people to root their devices. It seems as soon as people find away to do so.... These companies patch it up quickly.
So allow me to share with you the drivers that did allow me to install this on Windows 8 Pro 64bit (I do include the 32 bit drivers as well).
In my case I was trying to "reset" an Amazon Kindle Demonstration Model. This is not to be confused with a Kindle in demo mode, but rather a demonstration unit which came with only a locked down version of Amazon's Rom. One which has not settings option or wifi option... ie... Clicking on either will tell you that you have a demonstration unit and there are no settings to play with.
I purchased mine on eBay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/290870029962
You want to first install the Amazon Driver, then the USB Driver (in that order).
DRIVERS = http://www.sociallyuncensored.eu/_files_/amazon-usb-drivers.zip
From there I ran the tool and selected "Install Permanent Root with Superuser".
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
Once that was done I simply booted from the boot menu into the root and wiped all. This basically formated my kindle. Mounted the kindle and uploaded the update.zip file which you obtain from option 6, then 7. Proceeded to have it install. Upon rebooting my Kindle I had a fully functional Amazon Kindle Fire (1st Generation).
Not bad for my 1st post, eh?
Thank you very much OP!
I was really having a hard time to install the drivers on a Windows 8 Pro 64bit PC and your driver worked beautifully!
As you have mentioned KFU drivers won't install on Win 8 64. I wasn't even getting the language error, it was just refusing to install the drivers.
Thanks again!!!
I had 1 person contact me on my site, where the drivers are hosted (SociallyUncensored.eu) and claimed that
"its best to use the drivers that come with the utility"
I would personally disagree as those never worked for me, even when following this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2179748
The closest I got it to working using that guide, with those original drives from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
Told me that it had no hardware id (code 10). I think I got another error as well, but I don't recall what it was.....
But if you're one of those people who "really" want to work at it.... I guess you could try the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2179748
The drivers I posted seem to work better.
Thanks for your contribution. Keep it up.
Btw- may want to add [Guide] or [How to] in title

Thank you for the crystal-clear instructions! They helped me installing my KF on my girlfrend's notebook.
Thanks for this, I could do with the Windows 8 drivers for the same reason as you, to root a demo unit.
Can you check the zip file again though please? I'm getting that it is corrupt (tried with WinRAR and Windows Explorer):
"! E:\Downloads\JDownloader\amazon-usb-drivers.zip: CRC failed in amazon-usb-drivers\amazon\kindle_fire_usb_driver\KindleDrivers.exe. The file is corrupt"
Same issue

I got a few people telling me that the file is corrupt.
It's not. I've downloaded it and extracted this 3x (on different computers too). I had to format once and forgot to backup this and so my only source was the download.
Install 7zip - 7-zip.org
Download again.
Problem solved.
If its still corrupt, contact your ISP (internet service provider) or check your hardware... You're getting a poor download because your connection sucks. And that's outside my scope (willingness) to help.

My reply will not be as helpful....
If you don't know how to install drivers either using an install program or manually using the inf files .... Rooting a Kindle is not the first thing on your "to do list". Learn how to use drivers, before rooting devices.
I'm not trolling you and not trying not to be helpful, because you're trying to "fly" before you can even "crawl"

Everybody says they cannot install their drivers on Windows 8. I'm running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit and KFU installs the drivers just as it should after disabling driver signature enforcement. All I did to install mine was disable driver signature enforcement then reboot and run the install_drivers.bat and it successfully installed.

Hello all I'ave been trying to root my epic 4g for the last couple of days now without any success. I narrowed the problem down to not getting the USB drivers install. I am running windows7 32bit and have downloaded the same drivers from links on this site and also from samsung's site directly. The file that I downloaded comes as a "windows installer package type" after its unzipped so it installs automatically upon opening.
After the attempt install I get the following message:
Device driver software was not successfully installed
Coprocessor X No driver found
Base System Device X No driver found
Base System Device X No driver found
Can someone please help on this issue. I have searched the forums without any success and I refuse to believe that I'm the only one with this problem..
reinstall the .exe file, but right click and run as administrator. when you plug your phone in, uninstall the drivers through the device manager to make it "search" for updated drivers. worse comes to worse, instead of "automatically search for drivers" in the device manager, manually choose where the drivers are and navigate to the program (usually samsung something or another) and tell it to search.
make sure you have any other samsung driver or program uninstalled. some people have been having trouble with this.
This is the problem because this file is a windows installer package type after unzipping if I right click on the program my only option is to install, repair or uninstall. I'm not getting an option to run as administrator or am I even getting to see any files much less an EXE file.
Is there any way I can change the file type from the Windows Installer Package (.msi)?? And what should I change it to so it would act a little more friendly.
I would install pda net which is bundled with the app, plus you get a decent tethering app.

I personally would like to know of any foolproof way of installing drivers on windows 7... I scripted an all in one root and recovery program, and by far the biggest issue is failed drivers in windows 7... I've been avoiding installing window 7 on my bootcamp partition, but I may have to just so I can experience the same hell as everyone else.
Even if Odin3 is Windows only, at least drivers aren't an issue on my Mac.

You can install regular drivers by holding F8 at windows boot and disabling "driver signature" and then installing the drivers.
You can also permenantly dissable "driver signature" just google it,i forgot how to do it,its in gpedit.msc somewhere,i think.

not to beat a dead horse or anything....but .msi's shouldnt need to be unzipped, they should be executable that will bring up windows installer...maybe im missing something but glad you got it worked out!
I have a Kindle Fire which I would like to connect to via ADB, but the settings menu does not even have a box for USB debugging. Amazon also does not have ADB drivers, though I'd guess that using drivers for the TI OMAP 4430 might work, but I can't even try without USB debugging enabled.
Is there some secret way to enable USB debugging or an app which allows you to set it, even if the OS does not?
+1 for developers!
+2, been looking myself. Got some apps that aren't running right and there's no way to figure out why exactly.
+3 has anyone found any ADB drivers that work for Win7? I tried a few but no luck
Found it. It's pretty easy. http://blog.actlocalmedia.com/2011/11/developing-on-kindle-fire.html
Steps to get ADB to show your Kindle Fire
Hi everyone,
1. First, go into your KF Settings > Device and enable "Allow Installation of Applications "
2. Edit your adb_usb.ini and add 0x1949 to it.
Now it should show up on ADB and let you deploy APKs to it.
Thanks guys this works.
For Windows users the file is at:
C:\Users\[YOUR USER NAME]\.android\adb_usb.ini

For windows users if you need the driver, I posted a solution here:

That's odd, I didn't need to do any of that, just modify my INI in Win7 here.
I wasn't able to make this work based on the just the info here. Luckily Amazon actually posted official instructions, and they worked for me: http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/sdk/Connecting_your_Kindle_Fire_to_ADB.pdf
It's weird actually having real support from the vendor.
Edit: ROFL, the links in the PDF are just blue text and not real links. Here's the whole dev FAQ including a link to the Win7 driver: https://developer.amazon.com/help/faq.html#KindleFire
Still having trouble myself using both the Amazon provided instructions and the ones in dev thread.
Still getting no devices listed doing an adb devices. Have used the provided drivers for windows from Amazon and also am sure have modified correctly the drivers in the .android folder. My adb is working as it sees my captivate no problem.
Any thoughts? Is there a way to completely remove drivers and try installing them again? Any help would be appreciated.
In win xp, it didn't work for me when I specified the driver file explicitly, but did work when I just told it what folder to look in for the driver.
To uninstall just right click the device in device manager and click remove.
Good luck.

Ive been to a dozen websites... everyone has a copy paste basically of the method. I've altered adb_usb.ini with the 0x1949 and altered the android_winusb in the correct places but when I attempt to update the drivers under my device manager my kindle is listed under Disk drives... not "other" etc like everyone tells me to look for.. and attempting to update the driver results in telling me I already have the best driver. I am unable to find my kindle with an adb devices even after multiple starting and killings of the server. I uninstalled the android sdk and reinstalled and redownloaded everything but still no luck. Please help. I'm far from a master but this is not my first rodeo having rooted 3 android phones.
Idk how you do it on other oses but on windows 7 it's:
Device manager, right click, update driver, let me choose, let me pick, have disk, c:\<path to win_usb.inf>
Sent from my Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
aye the problem is it believes it already has the best drivers for the job and won't accept android_winusb.inf as it's superior

I just discovered that and was very hopeful but it replied
This version of C:\Users\*\Desktop\Kindle Fire Utility\tools\x64\devcon.exe

r's system information to see whether you need a x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) ve
rsion of the program, and then contact the software publisher.
Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.25
I'm on Vista.. assumed it would have worked
edit: its possible that the x86 worked and the x64 failed.. but the fact remains my device remains un-found. If I wasn't balding I'd be tearing out my hair.
Thank you to those who have tried to help however.
i had this problem earlier but my friend fixed it! when he wakes up ill have him post the solution
now i have superuser apk on system but no root and adb said success!! wtf
Jcase fixed my su problem i wasnt pushing the su with adb
congrats, im still messing with things but running out of options on my end.
Try running the batch file from an administrator command prompt. Also delete any existing device in devmgmt.msc. I'm also on Vista, worked ok for me.

i attempted the driver batch as administrator... it oddly doesn't make it as far as without.. it just says the system can not find the path specified 4 or 5 times then stops. And I've attempted to delete the kindle from disk drives which is the only location it shows up but as soon as i plug it in again it re-installs.
Edit: a side note.. i have a "Android Phone" in my device manager that appears to be my kindle and is using the 0x1949 drivers... I assumed it was my actual phone but it disappears/reappears when i unplug my kindle
Thanks to everyone who helped, by the grace of god i got my device recognized ... got it rooted... then bricked it installing TWRP.. finally unbricked it... and now I'm not messing with it for the rest of the night lol

Try doing a manual install through device manager.
AKA: Don't let windows look for the driver. Use the other option, and it should give you a list of "possible" drivers. Generally you will get a warning saying "this doesn't look to be compatible....blah blah blah" Ignore it.

Try the Google Drivers. Just google "Android USB Drivers". Should be the first result. It's about a 65mb download.
Also, seeing you are about to do what I "think" you are going to do, it's best to go ahead and download and install the Android SDK, then the google drivers. (considering you are in the SDK pages anyhow). You will need the fastboot and adb commands if your flashing doesn't go as expected.
Then manually install the google drivers like I stated earlier.
With the tab in APX mode, do the manual install through device manager like I stated. You should get a choice for APX or Recovery driver, or something or other. Ignore the warnings.

Windows 8 is not officially released yet and that could be the reason you couldn't install the driver. Did you create dual boot (i.e., Windows 7 and Windows 8) in your PC? You should have dual boot specially when trying Windows beta version.
Had exactly the same issue last night, apx simply does not work on win 8 yet as soon as a switched to win 7 with the same driver pack it worked fine
Use the acer driver installer then point device manager at that folder

I have the same problem. I contacted about it, but they couldn't give me the information I needed. So I opened the driver information in device manager and found that the part of the drivers that was for APX mode wasn't compatible, but it happened to work int Windows 8 Consumer Preview. It only worked on that one computer though.
My advice is to find someone with a Windows 7 computer and use that for what you need to do.

Why need to find someone who has Windows 7 while it is easier to partition your PC's hard drive and then install Windows 7 and you will have both OS, Windows 7 and 8, with dual boot. And BTW, don't mess someone's PC when it is not necessary and you don't want them to blame you if something goes wrong with their PC.

You can use virtualization solution, like free virtualbox, and run Windows 7 inside Windows 8. With usb support in virtualbox you can set that your tablet is visible to virtualized Windows 7 instead of your host system.

Either use your retail disc, or if it came with your machine, use your recovery disc. If you didn't get a recovery disc and it was instead a recovery partition, you can request a recovery disc from the OEM.
All of this told me ( and I am sure others) virtually nothing. I have seen reference to Acer drivers, adb drivers and APX drivers. I really don't understand the difference, what I need, or how I get them.
All of this Windows 7/8 discussion is very confusing!
@Tennessee
It means win+8 is next to useless for using any of the flash tools until Acer provides driver support. Stick with win7/xp if you're needing to update bootloaders or unbrick via EUU etc
I recently downloaded the Carbon backup app so I could back up my Nexus 7 before I root it. However, when I installed it, it needed to connect to my computer before I could use the app. When I connected to my computer, it said I needed to install the Google ADB drivers. So, I downloaded the drivers from Carbon's website, but when I tried to install them in Windows 8's device manager, it said that no drivers could be found in the directory I specified. I do have the drivers unzipped, and I had it check for subdirectories. I tried doing the same process with the Nexus Root Toolkit, but it ran into the same problem. Even when I tried to run the backup utility, it was unable to reboot my device to start the backup process. What should I do to get these drivers installed? I am running Windows 8 64-bit and my Wi-Fi 32 GB Nexus 7 is running 4.2.2. Every time I try to install a driver, I get the error "Windows was unable to install your Nexus 7." I have tried various Google and Asus USB drivers, and none were able to install.
