Hi guys,
A couple of weeks ago, Note II informed me of an upgrade. I did a bit of googling and found out it was to fix some exonys bug. Seemed pretty important so I did the upgrade post haste.
At first the battery life was atrocious (like a 50% drop). The same thing happened with my old iPhone 4 but everything reverted to normal within a week. So, I though maybe things are new and Android will fix itself up after some time.
How wrong was I ? LOL. My phone gives me just a day's worth of battery life. Earlier it was a solid two days. Which was why I justified carrying this brick of a phone. It is pretty ridiculous to see the battery drop by 30% at times in three or four hours (despite zero use).
Any suggestions to improve or remove the pathetic firmware upgrade.
1. Use the nova launcer
2. Auto brightness with the slider dragged to 1/3rd
3. 3G always on
4. The battery screen shows screen taking 70% of the battery! I have the auto off timer set to 15s the minimum.
Any suggestions guys? I am frustrated with this phone post the update. Thinking of switching back to the iPhone as atleast it gave me a day's pf juice in a much pocketable format.:crying:

The wakelock business, sounds disturbing; Found an old thread.

I am a very simple user, I did not install any applications (just transferred some music and installed Super Hexagon)after the firmware upgrade.
Could a firmware upgrade cause this much drastic drop in battery life?
Thanks,

There is a known battery drain issue with 4.1.2. What firmware did you update too?

Yes, but that battery drain issue was only in the first 4.1.2 release, the latest one does not have this issue.

Yes, I got the 4.1.2 upgrade which has played havoc with the battery life.
But the drop has been extreme in my case.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Honestly you can't do anything. In American english, you can't do nothing!
Turn 3G off, when you don't need it. Keep brightness at as low as possible.
That's all. 4.1.2 drains juice faster than 4.1.1, it's the truth, doesn't really matter if someone agrees or not.
You could go back to 4.1.1 ROM you know and depend on your luck for that Exynos issue. Otherwise give up on great battery backup and stay with 4.1.2, like I'm doing. Nowadays I don't even monitor how much battery backup/screen on time I'm getting, on 4.1.1 it was the opposite story however.
Hey, so should I just resign myself to a gimped battery? What really hurts is how awesome the battery was before.
Any word on when samsung would release a good update?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Download better battery stats to make sure there is no wake lock. I will advise despite my best efforts the battery life has plummeted when upgrading to 4.1.2. Stick to 4.1.1 for battery life. It still lasts much longer than an average handset saying that

After updating to 4.1.2 my battery runs down about 20% quicker overall I would say. 70% for your screen seems severe. Mine is always set to 50% auto and takes between 30 to 35% of the battery usage.

If you go back to 4.1.1.... Stock even....you'll have the same battery issue.
After about 2 weeks of having the 4.1.2 (the second update I received) on DBT my battery life one day just magically got better! I had been having terrible battery life (like 1 days worth) for 3 months, and now I get home every day from work with 50-70% battery. I charge it every night, regardless of the %. But it just magically got better. I'd say give it a go for a week or 2, and see if it helps. I don't know what happened with mine, but it looks like the software just "settled in" because I didn't install ANYTHING new, and in fact, I hadn't even uninstalled anything! It just got better after using it. Do a few battery pulls / restarts, too.
I went back to 4.1.2 last night and right now I'm at 50% charge, 17 hours standby time and 5 hours of screen time... I'd say my battery issue is fixed.. for now lol
I also must say that after a week or so of using 4.1.2 battery went much better overnight. I automatically turn on airplane mode during night, and on 4.1.1 I had like 1-2% drain overnight from full charge. After updrage to 4.1.2 it jumped to 10-20% !!! Now, it is down to like 4%, which is not that bad. Still have to see how it behaves during the day, I think it is not any better. Well, at least that standby drain is (much) better....

Edit: After 50% battery drain in 8 hours of light/moderate use on wifi I'm going back to 4.1.1... I see no benefit of using 4.1.2.... The reason I bought my note 2 was to have a battery that will last me all day and this isn't cutting it.

Hi Guys,
I am on the Three network in UK. I recently updated my to JB and immediately noticed that the battery performance has deteriorated. I used to get nearly two full days with a 2 - 2.5 hours of screen time, 1 hour talktime and 1 hour music and little maps with GPS. I can merely a day now with the same usage. I would like to mention that the standby time was brilliant on the last update I received on ICS. Is anyone facing the same issue. I am thinking of of doing a full factory reset. Not sure if that will solve the problem. The battery graph shows that something keeps the phone awake

I flashed the french version last night and I literally only got my S3 yesterday too and I can't really comment on the battery life compared to ICS but the battery life is way better than on my Xperia Play... Anyway I intend on trying out CM10 soon.
for me the other way around
ICS used to eat battery faster.
everything depende on how you setup and how you use your phone. it's not as simple as ICS > JB or JB > ICS
All the leaks I used, including the Polish Rom, had rubbish battery. H3G is working fine. Even better than ICS (or about the same).

Yep getting similar battery as that screen shot... Seems to be a lot of wake locks also I have realised even with data turned off it still drains battery as if it was on... On ics with data off I would lose like 2% over night bit with jb data off I lose 10±% battery easily over night... Hoping this is fixed soon... I though jb is suppose to be more efficient than ics?

I know how to disable Google Now, but how to disable S-Voice on a stock (unrooted) ROM other than simply "not using it"?
Like an earlier poster, I used to get huge battery life with ICS by turning data off overnight etc, however now with JB it seems to drain much quicker.
I'm only sync'ing the minimal essential things as before, pretty much exactly the same settings, so disappointed in the battery life.
I made a point of doing a full wipe both before and after the update to be sure of starting "with a clean slate".
Some people have said that battery life should improve after a few days. Why should that be? Is it busy housekeeping its flash memory or something?
Did you try Settings->Application Manager->All->S-Voice->Disable?
Works for me.
I'm the same. Ics was much battery. I have turned everything off, disabled everything unsynced everything and batteryvstill draining at 3-4% per hour, whats the point of a smart phone if you can't use it! My battery drains pretty much the same whether the screen is on or off!
I found battery life in JB to be poor IF my wifi was connected - with wifi off or just disconnected battery life seemed to be similar to ICS. I use wifi a lot though, so for the moment I've gone back to ICS... wifi range and performance seemed to be lower in JB too for what it's worth.
Im loosing 2% overnight using foxxhound
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
I get roughly 10-15% more juice out of JB with identical apps and settings.
My battery life is a lot worse on stock unrooted UK BTU JB aswell ... didnt even get 10 hrs out of it yesterday ... doing a full wipe and restore just now but its taking hours to put my apps back on ..
Didnt take this long to restore a iphone or is something wrong here ...My back up is only about 300mb and its been about 3-4 hours and still just at 50% complete ...
To be honest, that looks alright to me. 17 hours with network on all the time? And look at those wakes while the screen is off.

Mine has notiably decreased. I solved a lot of it by freezing crap loads of apps and making a lot of adjustments with the autostarts app. One notable differace that I didn't expect was a few non-system files with 'test' in the name that was appearing under "Media" in the battery usage part of settings. I still have faster drain than normal and am not convinced I'll stay with this build just yet or not; it will take some days of testing. One good thing I noticed was that with a poor signal after being off of wifi for a big chunk of today, it didn't drain any slower than when I had a good signal.
The above said, though, about my battery life, I was previously also using autostarts with a heavy set of disables and had Dorminix with some severe tweaks. I actually stayed on AOKP as a result of better control over what ran actively (back button to kill maps for example) as the decisive thing over being on 4.04 prior to this release. Even on 4.0.4 I got worse battery life than the AOKP build that had the Earth and Moon aligned for my particular handset. Glad to have the Samsung camera back for the time being. Maps seems to draw WAY less than on the AOKP builds on Samsung as well, including this update.

It seems like a coincidence for a number of people to all have more battery drain, due to a dated battery, when they all go to a new ROM. Some people have issues, some people don't. It seems to me that its more a device specific thing than a mass placebo effect resulting from an update. I could be wrong though, since I'm partially making the assertion based partially off of my own handset and battery.
Battery not Charging
i have updated to JB 4.1.2, 2 days back but i am facing a strange problem. My battery is not charging more than 67% even charging for more than 5 hours. its becoming HOT and after 67% its not charging more .. it is OK on all other Stock and Custom ROMS.
Battery Life, in my case, is considerably better than under 4.0.4, and it's not even comparable to CM9 or CM10 that always died very fast on me.
for me its even better, i got 18 hours of battery and still 38 pacent left... 40 to 50 messages, 30 min of wify etc
I still got 23 hours, the lastest ICS version last for 27 hours and 17 minutes
So it's the battery is it?
"Stable" ROM to a test release and it's the worn out battery, which was fine on the previous "stable" ROM, that's causing the piss poor battery run-down?

Wait until new phone syndrome wears off.
You've only had your phone 3 days, and your still flashing new roms, which sucks up a lot of juice. Let it settle for a few days.
Also a 4.7" display sucks down battery. My phone last all day no problem now that I've had it for a few weeks. First week it wouldn't last 6 hours... because I used it for 6 hours screen on constantly.
I've been noticing and reading many many posts regarding how bad or optimized our battery life is.
I had this phone little more than 24 hours now. And I feel like it hasn't fully when through the battery cycle. Thus killing my phone in less than 10 hours. This is with very light usage as well!
I've also turned off gps and wifi.
I have turned on stamina, along with various other battery saving features.
Now I am coming from galaxy s3, note 2, and iPhone 5. (my iPhone has this same issue and cleared when I've started using the phone and going through few charging cycles)
I just wanna make sure that our phone isn't plagued by the software, hence this phone is only available via t-mobile or Sony (unlocked as well).
Please post your battery life photos.
Including rooted or not.
Also post which rom / kernel you are using.
Mine: stock from t-mobile. And not rooted.

Yup you have a lot of wake events, I had this problem too. I reseted, reflashed firmware multiple times and still experienced problems until I sent it to Sony and somehow now there is barely any awake entries at all. Only screen entries appear (blue line on screen) and no lines on awake.. I do still get *backup* wakelocks and some qcom_RX_wake lock though

The media server keep draining my battery...
But when I switch my sd card to a empty one or just remove it the media server nolonger drain my battery.
So I only keep a small amont of pic and musics in my sdcard and that makes the battery can last more the one day

I'm not sure about the screen part though but it does make sense if AMOLEDs screen uses less battery than LCD/TFT screens since they actually off the black pixels.

KitKat didn't kill battery life. Mine is about the same as it was before KitKat. In about 99.999% of the time an app is to blame. I have a simple but arduous method to find the app that's killing your battery.
I agree the battery has taken a hit. I used to ave about 9hrs of screen on time, now about 6hrs. I also have the chromecast issue. Strange thing is that sometimes the screen doesnt even show up In the battery stats. Sometimes the usage time doesnt change when it shows in battery stats. I am stock, 32gb white US model updated with Kies. I have done many factory resets. I have tried it for 2 days without installing any apps or disabling any samsung bloat, with no change in the tablest behavior.

Kitkat sent my note into fits. Battery life was terribly erratic at first. Dropping 30% in an hour, then suddenly jumping back up by 10%.
I tried factory reset.... nothing changed. Then I used the Battery Callibration app from playstore. Ran it and followed instructions exactly. (Waited til it was charged 100%, then run the program, then completely drain battery, then let it charge continuously back up to 100%).
Go figure............ since then things have calmed down and I am getting the same battery life as on my old Jellybeans note. (I know, because I've got two of these tablets and literally compared them side by side.)
Or, it could also be that after firmware upgrade things need a bit of time to settle down. Hope this helps.

Yeah, I am used to android taking a bit to settle in. After my note 3 updated, it seems like it took a month to get back to my "normal". I hope the tablet does too, just frustrating in the mean time
Mine settled down after about 3 days and several resets. Now the battery seems comparable to pre-KitKat.
I don't think it is kit Kat. I'm running kit Kat and easily see 9 hours of screen on. It is most likely an app you have installed that is doing it.

Then not everyone would then mention that it is not change or improved (in stand-by).
No, normally a app or bad file on the sd-card is killing here the battery. All tools to find this out, are already mentioned here. Good luck.
4.4 in and of itself isn't causing poorer battery life. In fact, owners of other devices are reporting improvements. The Exynos N3 for example. There aren't any battery life issue threads on the Pro forums and they have the same h/w and we're most likely using their 4.4 drivers and kernel. There are threads like this in every device forum when an Android version upgrade is released. It's almost always due to a bad flash or a rogue app or service. That and older apps that haven't been updated in ions and aren't playing well with the new OS. People here have reported shorter charging time and longer battery life. So what's being discussed isn't universal. I'd suggest doing a stock recovery and reviewing older apps and those that aren't developed by known and larger developers.
I have a Shield and S4 too. For every poster raving, there seems an opposite view on battery life and the SD card issue.
The SD issue makes battery life debates moot. Google has an Apple wannabe syndrome. Perhaps they will rebrand as Goople.
You can recalibrate the battery by running it down below 20% then recharging. I have seen it recommended to do this every 30 days or so.
My Note 3 with KitKat started using 20-30% of the battery at night while it was idle. Looked and looked and couldn't find a clue to the problem. Decided to reboot, the next night it was fine, used maybe 2-3%

Agree and disagree!
I did have charging problem and battery drain right after KK update. I have to do the Factory Data Reset. Luckily my tablet is back to normal if not better. I did spend sometime go thru all setting. So I managed to get 4 hrs of screen time with moderate use and I still have about 59% of battery.
So I say kk is good or better then jellybean

Everybody wants to be a comedian.
I don't have this issue but maybe affected people should read this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52366635&postcount=236
I updated a couple days ago and since then my battery just sucks. It just went from 100% to 29% in 2 hours just using Youtube. It can't be right. Definitely it's the upgrade!!
I loved my Note 10.1 2014 out the box that I decided not to root. So it's factory stock and suck very bad.
If it's a bad app I can find it. It worked flawlessly before the upgrade.
Factory reset and see if it still happens. A dirty flash can do weird stuff...

Yeah, im not getting great battery life either since this update. I just reset the tablet in the hope of tracking down what's the issue.
Troubling, since battery life was so great previously.
