custom roms for arc s review - Xperia Arc General

hi every one
i would like to open a thread about reviews on custom roms on ARC S
reviews made as ORDINARY USER
it is just about how you think of your device AFTER a custom rom
what you like or dislike.....
what you miss or need and didn't found ....(no need to tell how and what you do , because that's another subject)
NO NEED to post Q or BUGS or HOW TO or REQUESTS or DEEP DEVELOPER details JUST....USER OPINION!!!
AND please give credits to the developers of the ROMS by posting links to threads you found the custom rom in.
Starting form here:
Arc S with rooted GB (LT18i 4.0.2.A.0.62) and CWM installed
AtoMic GB 5.0 final (custom rom)
AtoMic Gb 5.0 Arc S patch!
Atomic mod system ui
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2083286
-device working fine no lags or errors ..until now
-installing apps &games and they are working good for me
-no file manager pre-installed
-don't like ring tones
my overall opinion it is GOOD rom to try!!!:good::good:

You should use the respective Rom threads to post reveiws about romS!
edit:
allright if everyone wants it

Well I think it's a good idea for a thread that could help people in finding ROM's with features they are looking for. I dislike posting off topic so here I go:
CyanogenMod 10
+Clean
+Stable
+Fast
+Not as bloated as stock ICS
+JB notifications are useful
+Supported and actively developed
+Open source
-Camera is awful
-Ringtones could be better but who really cares?
Oh and don't take XtremeSilencer seriously he's not so bright...

The way People can find what they're looking for is by reading the ROM threads in the development section, not by reading noobs opinions on one of the many variations of a "best ROM" thread, which this is, evident by the short summary of what the OP thinks about the ROM.
I can't agree more. Which ROM is the fastest? Which kernel is best? etc. etc. It's like walking into a bar and asking which drink is the best. You can't get your answer because every person around has a personal taste and looking for something different.
Going further. Telling that one ROM is better than another is quite disrespectful to developers. Most of them spent much time making their work for FREE and one guy can easily depreciate their work.
If you're looking for answer - try. It's easy and making it on your own is much funnier than looking for spoon feeding in every situations. Thinking is fun

I can't see this as valid review, because every user is different and every user has its own needs. 2 people will not have totally same user experience on same ROM and kernel.

No need to turn the thread into (picking on noobs)thread it's about USER OPINIONS NOOBS OR NON-NOOBS
No need mock or disrespect commenters just because YOU THINK YOU KNOW MORE THAN THEM
No need to tell any one where or how to find ROMS

Actually I have an Ultimate HD of course, with Ultimate HD Mod and I like it very much.
+almost no lags
+xperia z theme
+modded statusbar (better than stock, I think)
+configurable
+quite frequent updates
-few useless system apps
Grade: 5,5 (in Poland we have grading scale from 2-5 at universities )
Previously I had used several other ROM`s, for example Viper Xpieria (good, 4,5-5), Racing Bean (not so good, 3-3,5), CyanogenMod 10 (good, 4), MIUI (good, 4), Jelly Sandwich (very good, 5, but it`s no longer developed I think) and CAMPS+ (bad, 2,5-3).
So to sum up, in my opinion the best ROM actually is Ultimate HD + Ultimate HD Mod, cause of no lagging, stability, and almost no bugs.

I've been using Custom ROMs for about 6 months. So, didn't try too many of them. The reason why I switched to custom ROM was Sony Bloatware and the slowness of official ICS ROM. What I was looking for was more internal space and get the phone up to GB speeds.
First try was CM9.
+ Easy to install, best documentation out there,
+ Good customization options,
+ Frees up load of memory,
+ The GUI doesn't lag too much
+ Fast boot-up.
- Apollo player (hated it and due to regional issues, I couldn't install Google Music),
- WiFi issues
Next I tried racing bean with Fusion 4.4
+ The GUI is much more fluid than anything I tried on my Arc,
+ Customization is on the same level as CM9,
+ Same internal storage usage as CM9,
+ Includes good players/utilities,
+ Battery life didn't shorten despite the fact that the phone became more fluid and responsive,
+ WiFi locks very fast and stable,
+ No issues with 3G,
- There are 3 camera programs included. The panaroma one doesn't even launch (force close immediately). The other two are definitely below the Sony's original camera application,
- The kernel boot takes forever. I see the Fusion logo for about 40 seconds. Once the Nexus animation starts, the boot-up goes very fast. I get the feeling that the Fusion kernel is waiting for a timeout,
- The phone reboots occasionally. Especially when GPS is used (like with dedicated navigation programs). I think when the phone is under heavy load (you feel that the GUI starts stuttering and lag becomes apparent) almost immediately the Nexus X logo comes up.
I heard good things about the Ultimate HD ROM. Will try that one once I get some free time.

Each user will have different experience with each ROM. So an opinion from a certain user about a certain ROM may differ from another user. The only way to truly find the best ROM for your phone is to try it out.

Well I don't have 10 post under my belt so I can not post on developer thread but am a hyper droid flasher. Rooted my phone the very next day and voided its warranty. Since then have used many many ROMs but only few are there to remember.
Let me just go by Droid OS versions:
1. ICS 4.0.4= Pureness ROMS, VIPER
2. JB 4.1.2 = Slim bean or Super JB
3. JB 4.2.2 = Paranod Android v3.6 (Rizal Lovins) My current ROM

1. ALL the 4 virtuous ROMs are stuck at their versions for the past few days since 19th July
2. http://www.virtuousrom.com/ update from 22nd July states that UNITY project is on hold.
EDIT 2: People are saying "this thread should not clutter Dev threads".... well, please read the bolded part above. Asking Qs in generic area about Dev status of ROMs would be inappropriate.
EDIT 3: I think too many folks took this negatively. Changed topic from "[Q] Are the virtuous ROMs dead ? should we switch to Taboonay ?" to "[Q] What is the status of virtuous ROMs ? UNITY kernel ?". Hope that clarifies that this thread is not to denigrate any developer.

lol guess you are one of the spoilt ones as no updates for a few days everyone panics. they are not dead but i do think if there are no major updates from the sources then nothing more to add i am afraid. what i would like to see is kernel updates for the actual virtuous roms available. its not secret i love virtuous galaxy but thats stuck on unity v7 while some have v8/9 etc. mdj has said that galaxy will be updated when updated firmware is released. i am not a flashaholic like some as once i have a stable offering i am happy however i do like to have the latest available. i am currently trying out thor galaxy v1 to see what that offers as its a fusion of galaxy and asus goodness. i have stayed away from official acer 3.1 mods ad acer driers are not the best. saying that virtuous picasso 1.10 was electric

If you don't know about SHC rom then you're not worth it.
On a serious note... There is no need to flash every single day. If the rom is bugfree and/or there are no new sources then there's no reason to update it.
So chill back and wait for SuperHootchieCoochie ROM.
Do us a favor and ask such questions in the general area, keep this clean for development ...
+1 not only a rom oesnot need to be updated every day but cooks also have a life

Not sure about that. A bit of a grey area This is asking about development of a specific rom. Surely its only the devs in the dev section who will be able to answer this. Its not a tip for users, a theme or an app question he is asking. Chill abit with the 'this is not for this section'.
Anyway when are we getting GT 3.2
I tend to agree with the topic starter. Although I know the developer does a great job, having 4 or 5 different roms to support, makes things confusing, not only for the developer, but also for his followers.
They wonder, what rom should i take, why he switches from Acer to Asus to Galaxy to Xoom and then hops from one rom to another. It makes me think the developer also doesnt know what he wants. Shall i use the asus core or perhaps the acer core, and if that choice is made, he hops back to another core.....
Also, if developing that many different ROM's, what you end up with is a less polished result as when you stick to one dev. direction, which is - in my eyes all to clear as m-deejay's roms still have problems with random power off, wifi problems, and some more, while i do know roms with other kernels, which dont have those problems.
So instead of showing us how many different developments the developer can keep up with for 30-40%, i think he should stick to 1 or 2, and make those 2 100%, or as close as possible to a 100%.
Just my 2 cents......
virtuous alive. moderators please close this thread
How alive is virtual picasso?
I believe Virtuous hoochiecoochie can be alive, but applies the same to the other treads, i really doubt that, as still the wifi problems, the random power offs, random screen-freezes are still as bad (or good, depending on how much you mind) as several versions before.......
Virtuous roms are very unstable, id move on if I were you.
MOD: Please dont close this thread.
Cheers!

As far as virtuous galaxy goes random reboots are a thing of the past since unity v2. From v3 onwards the kernels have been good. However unity v7 in VG 1.0.5 seems to have reverted back to old ways instead of going fwd. Its a shame thor wont release his kernel sources as this would greatly enhance the custom roms we have on here. I do agree that having so many ports can tend to confuse but from my hd2 days mdj works that way!

And 1 for closing this thread as this cant be constructive. Where would this acer forum be without devs like mdj? We have more choice than most of the other tablet owners on here. We have the chefs enhancing the stock option and we have mdj providing us with flavours from deifferent devices. That cant be bad can it? If the virtuous roms are too buggy then we all have the choice to stay clear. However there are many that prefer the custom options and can live with the bugs. We have choice in here not just from stock optimisations but custom mods from various devices. Thats must be a good. What we dont want is people starting to get on the chef and he leaves xda like most of the exp chefs all over xda are doing!

For example galaxy is more or less perfect, 3 small issues to fix, but what else should be updatet. So not much to do for mdj.
And no need to flash a new rom every day, I think. Don't change a running system.

There will be a small price you have to pay for it, approximately 1000,000 pesos. But it's worth it bro! It even comes with a hot secretary that will type for you........"wait for it"!
another 1 for closing
Case in point:
I bought both the Iconia and Transformer and had a tough time deciding which to open and keep. What made me choose the Iconia was the dev support in comparison. Lets realize without dev support our tabs, phones, etc. Wouldn't be functional or as fun!
If the dev of the rom says he's still developing, then case closed.

[Q] Best Hd2 Android rom out there

What is the best htc hd2 android rom out there with sense working and is stylish smooth and quick

I advise you NOT to get the 4.X Roms because they still are not optimized enough and don´t have "functions" that are worth getting for!
Try to look for cyanogen7 mods on 2.3.X roms
THe best so far I found was dorimanx rom but it is unstable atm (installing apps result in crash)

Hi simadams the link in your "shortlist this one" post is dud can repost to tell me which rom and version it is
HyperDroid is the best. I've tried all Sense ROMs, they're all not fast enough for me.
Sense is BS most of the time.
this is the one I use
[20.Feb.2012] NexusHD2-ICS-4.0.3-CM9 V1.4 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1434860)... its great... but there are some small glitches... like I can'e edit the contacts from the default People app, I can send MMS (could be my configuration problem), cant change the default app once I check the box in the pop up, battery performance is poor (lasts only 12-15hrs)...
But its really smooth and fully functional...
Why can't one search the forum before asking this Question !!!!!!!!!!!
I am sure there are more than 10 threads with the same question..
whats the best ROM is a lot like asking whats the best flavor ice cream. (butter pecan personally) lol. The point is whats the best in our, the communities eyes don't always match up with one another. This is because what i want on my ROMs you may not and vise versa. The more details you give the better someone may point out a ROM they like that they might feel you will enjoy too.
If you want something a little older thats really fast and reliable one might point out RAFDROID HD. If you want something a little newer maybe running Gingerbread i would suggest CoreDroid GB. If you want sense 3.0/3.5 i feel Team Blue Droid V3.6 runs pretty smooth and they have a themed version under development. I would check out youtube and type in HD2 roms. Watch a few and try and get an idea of what your looking for. There is a great site found here that list many of the Android ROMs for the HD2. It tells you some basic info about each one like if it has sense, what build and when it was updated. Take awhile looking over each one and read some of the comments in that thread to try and get an idea of what you'll be getting. Hopefully then you'll be able to make a great choice on the perfect ROM for you.

A Plea For Sanity: Samsung ICS Roms

I'd like to begin this rant with a disclaimer.
I am not an Android developer, or a Linux enthusiast, or an expert of any kind. All I am is a keen Android user (Since the HTC Desire) who loves customising my phone.
I am EXTREMELY grateful for all the hard work of the people who know more than I do (Developers, Rom chefs, etc) and I mean them no offense.
They are the ones who make buying an Android phone worthwhile, and this community relies on them.
Now, here it is: Why, Why, Why, can't we have a custom rom with the stock Samsung look?
There are some excellent custom roms out there, offering reduced size, performance improvements, improved customisation ability: The likes of RocketRom, MidTeam, Criskelo, and so on.
But every single one of them has a mismatched, ugly, patchwork of a theme, with elements of AOSP ICS, Galaxy S3, and god knows what else.
Many of them slap a black and blue status bar ontop of the Samsung framework, which clashes and looks horrible.
MidTeam used to have a zip file to restore the stock theme, which was great, (Thanks Maxicet!) but this has been dropped from the current version.
Please, I beg you, developers:
Please give us an option to keep the stock Samsung look on our ICS roms.
Or if you are going to do a theme for your rom, at least make it consistent, like the Galaxy SIII look.
Leave the theming to the people that know aesthetics, and keep doing what you do best: Making great Android roms.
Thankyou very much
+1
A stock custom rom would be great! Some ROMs have those elements that I really don't like (for example an ugly statusbar).

Stock samsung UI is ****, but I also hate clock on the center, like on Criskelo ICS ROM. I prefer stock android style UI. This option must be at all ROMs, and official stock too.

there is StockLook Theme for Rocket ROM also....just the bettery icon is customized and of course the 15 toggle (but also in Stocklook)....and:
with really MINOR knowledge everyone can build a complete stocklook with NO theming modifications at all!!!!!!!! If you are not able to do yourself, start a request in theming section - this is 5 minute work to do complete stocklook
if i might just make a quick statement,
the rom by the devs were designed to the way they want it. not to how the public wants it. it was made specifically for themselves for their own usage but were kind enough to share their work for us here on xda.
for us to use.
u can put in some requests on how the theming or looks should be done, and it would be entirely up to them if they want to attend to those requests or not.
i'm no developer and hence i cant complain what i didnt pay for but instead got it for free.
they could've easily exercise the option of "if u dun like it, dun use it".
Cassies xlr rom is stock look

some people open threads instead of at least looking inside the ROM descriptions (or pics inside!!!)....or they could kindly ask inside the ROM threads for wanting complete stocklook....but hey, why? It is more easy to start demanding before reading...

I don't agree with you. This is manufactors, who don't care about customers and their opinion. ROM developers making ROMs first of all for us, not for money. We can donate them if we like their work and can ask to add/change something in the ROM. Too bad we can't do the same for manufactors.

Rom cooks make the ROMs for themselves (at least me and most of the other ones i know)...but they like to share their work and of course you are welcome to ask for additional features inside the threads - and not open an extra one.....
ya bro the keyword here is donate. not sell.
if the rom devs were like manufacturers, they'd sell it to u for a fee. but in this case, the rom devs willingly share their hardwork to you without asking for a single cent. the donation part is totally optional.
there is no legal contract binding here. and i will say it again, rom devs do not make roms for us. they make it for themselves but are very much willing to share it with us.
This thread is totally out of place and mind. Reported.

Where is the Thread of Slim ICS v4.2?

hi
was the development for the slim ics port stopped? because the thread just vanished and i can't find it again. Am i too stupid or did somebody really delete it?
the thread about the sd version is still there: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763112
the thread was here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1759815

I haven't been following it lately, but I saw a dispute whether the developer should have made a slim version of an already available ROM or not. So it is likely that the original ROM developer asked to cease the slim port and sought a thread closure.

if the thread would have been simply closed like others i would agree, but this thread vanished completely. the dispute was on the first two pages. how can a rom-cooker demand that his android rom doesn't get ported? credits where given where they where due and apart of that aosp is oss.

Fully agree wirh you.
What was wrong with porting rom and giving credits to original Dev?
For me it was the fastest, smallest ics rom for hd2.

Post deleted. But i have links. Long live Google Cache
From slim ics site:
"Supported Devices here, no extra devices for now ( and NO PORTS of Slim ICS)"
"http://source.android.com New versions will also be announced through this site."
"Fully built from AOSP sources with some cherry picks from CM and AOKP team, Easy to customize features (thanks to AOKP team)"
Atm trying to be calm but... Lets just say it piss me off this kind of thing.
This guy need to look at Miui team, they have right set of mind.

It would be nice if a moderator (or someone that knows and is objective about it) can tell us what happened. If it ended up in a heated argument I wouldn't want someone telling us only his half of the story - but I really would like to know.

If it was pulled by a moderator upon request personally I think it's within reason. The thread wasn't stated as being Unofficial, which it should have been, and with a system partition of 130MB it can hardly even be called a slim OS (other full fat ROMs are 150); nevermind comparable to SlimICS which are half that size (54 - 70). And besides the last post I seen on the thread was from the OP who said he wasn't happy with the build and wanted to change the ROM he was porting from, and it was only an alpha.
On a similar note, if a small ICS rom is to come along, I personally thing it would be benificial if we could utilise squashfs. This would require kernel support, the toggles are there to turn on squashfs support in dorimanx, but it may require a module from somewhere, I'll PM dori tomorrow concerning this unless someone here know if squash can/can't be used with our bootloaders / device. Only problem I can for see is in module compatibility, and if it works should allow for smaller versions of our current ROMs.
Your position is legit but non of the slim ics roms include gapps and trebucht as launcher. It was comparable to other full roms with about 50-100mb less memory. And for me it's totally legit to port a ROM from one to an other device if you give credit and state which Tom was ported. Would be different if there was some own coding for tools and drivers was done. Don't distribute my tools without my permission is different than don't share something i picked up somewhere else and used it for my own work. That's not how the gold licence works.

Most of ics roms are from 150 to 220m(miui).
This rom without gapps was around 85mb.
I have atm slim ics with trimmed gapps and some media files that fit in less then 120mb, if i compare to other ics rom which i used as trimmet down, they were from 140 to 190mb imho it was really Slim version of rom
Edit: Maybe it was beta version but worked without problems and it was the fastest ics i tried and i tried them alot

Fair point, the last zip I downloaded had a system folder of 130MB thats where I got my sizes from, have had a play with squashfs and have shrunk this down from 130 to 92MB. Will try tomorrow to get a kernel to compile properly and see if squash works here. Haven't tried slim myself, currently running PA and can't see how it can be faster. Have you had any issues when trying to make a call /pressing the call button?

If i don't consider common issues which have most of ics hd2, like sometimes funky memory management which on heavy duty can produce little problems, there aren't any un ordinary problem.
Calls working very snappy.
In fact whole rom is fast, responsive, low battery consumption, apps which i tested working correctly even Ted app.

I tried both, as well as some other ICS rom and believe me, it's faster than any other 4.0.4 around here. In fact I'm using it as my daily and I find it excellent, such a shame the thread has been deleted.
Hi ppl, sorry for the silence on this. Apparently there was a problem with permissions for Zorua's thread, I asked the moderators advice on the future of my thread, and it was decided to close my thread also. I have no problem with this decision.
Sorry for any inconvenience to anybody caused by this episode.
It is a great shame though, it was a really nice build.

Best ROM right now?

Right now, I am on Smoothrom 3.4, and am looking to either upgrade to 4.0, or instead, choose another one entirely. My other choices are Paranoid Android (Maybe Cookies and Cream?) or Glazed Jelly Bean. What do you guys think?
To subjectional. Everybody is just gunna tell you what ROM THEY think is the best and its just gunna be a bag of opinions. Flash one you like don't listen to what a bunch of others think.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
All of them are equally good, just look at the features of each and decide which one fits your needs.
Ok fine, what do you guys recommend?
I like Paranoid Android, very smooth, awesome customization options, and very responsive developer (aaronpoweruser).

most roms can be updated by flashing straight over the top. just check the thread, if it is a major update it may require full wipe first.
you can wipe cache and dalvik before, though more important is that you nandroid backup first!
seriously, try a few roms out for yourself and find out what YOU like. the beauty of a nandroid backup is that you can always go back if you don't like it
It really is very subjective. I've tried so many and it is very hard to really see the differences sometimes.
What is missing from stock that you want? Have you simply tried another kernel?
My personal favorites now are Codename Android and SmoothROM. Both are smooth, I haven't had any bugs that drive me crazy.
Definitely, you'll probably need to flash a few different ones to figure out what you like the most.
I normally do an ADB backup and then restore to put the apps back on. Since I use Nova, I just have to set that as my Launcher and majority of my settings are restored.
Which roms are bug free? I am in the same boat as opposed.. I know I could flash roms and decide but it's easier to ask and even though is personal preference it helps to know what you guys like.. it basically helps noobs siphon out the average roms from the great ones.. it does seem like the top are glazed, paranoid, and smooth Rom.. but please do give your personal opinions:thumbup:

No rom is 100% bug-free. Threads like this are a waste of bandwidth for the very simple reason that the answer is totally subjective. Hence, they are summarily locked as soon as a moderator catches wind of them.
While I can understand and appreciate not wanting to spend a considerable amount of time flashing rom after rom, questions such as the subject matter of this thread are as pointless as "what color should I like best" or " what should my favorite tv show be." No one can answer that but you. No offense, and I'm not singling you out with this, but "what rom..." questions come across as wanting to be spoon fed the answer rather than putting even a minimal amount of effort into finding the answer.
Invest a bit of time researching. Give at least a cursory glance to some of the threads in the development forums. Generally, the features of the rom will be detailed in the OP and screenshots may even be posted. Read the last few pages of the threads to see how the current version is playing out. Look at how much traffic the various threads are getting, comparatively, to see which roms might have a fairly large user base or have been around awhile.
I would recommend Paranoid Android.
Everything is great !:good:
I'm using [ROM][KANG] CM10 with Tablet UI and I'm very happy with it. All I needed was a clean and stable rom with Tablet-UI. This one has it all!
Codename in original development...

I appreciate everyones response to the question in this thread. as it helps me to know where to start flashing roms. Thanks everyone. i started with GlazedJelly( great rom). and now running paranoid 2.5 (another great rom) i like PA as it has the option for stock or tablet ui.
