ive rooted galaxy s3 many times but ive been reading that there are problems rooting to 4.2.2
like any other nexus on any other version of android. fastboot oem unlock, fastboot flash a custom recovery, flash either the su binaries or custom rom in your new recovery, reboot and profit. thats all. theres never a problem rooting a nexus if done right, google lets you. dont use root toolkits, unless you already know whats going on.
It is quite a simple process. If you don't want to use fastboot, then you can use the Nexus Root Toolkit. Lifehacker had an article on this. To my knowledge 4.2.2 was difficult on tablets due to the multiuser, but that has been fixed with SuperSU and Superuser from Clockworkmod. The Nexus 4 has no such problems and should have no problem being rooted.

Hey, just got my N4 yesterday.
I rooted my device today.
I also wanted to install a custom recovery like cwm or twrp.
But everytime it comes up with the android figure and a red warning.
Seems that every tool kit like the 1.6. nexus root toolkit or the Google Nexus 4 ToolKit is not able to install/flash a recovery.
Am i doing anything wrong?

What you are doing wrong is using a toolkit. Follow these instructions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018179
I use mskip's Nexus 4 Toolkit without any issues. So far I've used it to root, install clockworkmod recovery and flash the stock image after messing up a build prop edit. Saved me a lot of headaches as I haven't used adb or fastboot commands in over a year, don't even have the sdk installed any more. This is the first phone since I got my Incredible in 2010 that I actually wanted to put a custom recovery on and play with.
Here are some basic questions. Did you unlock your boot loader? Do you have usb debugging enabled? Does your device show up when when your plugged in and booted up into fastboot? Do you have the correct drivers installed? Which recovery are you trying to install and did you try the other one available? Did you use the toolkit to root and did it work?

After you root the device using the toolkit, it is easiest to download ROM Manager or Goo.im from the Play Store to install your custom recovery.
As Ed Daddy said, it's best to use ADB, however, it would save you some times and a few headache if you could just go ahead and download ROM Manager. Sometimes people forget there are *really easy* ways to do stuffs.

While I agree there are "really easy" ways to do things, I was trying to point him in the direction of learning.
Obviously since they don't know how to flash a recovery, they probably aren't familiar with much else.
Learning how to do things properly never hurt anyone.

El Daddy is correct.
Toolkits are silly on Nexus devices, for Nexus the simplest way is flashing via faboot. At the very least take the time to learn from the guide that El Daddy provided a link to. With that knowledge you'll be able to resolve issues like this and help others who get stuck.
Actually I unlocked my bootloader, rooted the device. Using normal OTA 4.2.1
But it seems that every toolkit cannot flash the recovery.
I will try it now with using adb commands...
All the toolkits are are scripts that run the fastboot and adb commands for you, they're nothing complicated and IMO from someone with experience I prefer using them now as I no longer have the sdk installed. Gave up on custom ROMs, my own and others, a long time ago.

Actually it's fastboot not adb that you use to flash recoveries, two different animals. and to the poster recommending ROM Manager, its kind of borked right now and I wouldn't use it to flash anything.
Edit: spoke too soon on ROM Manager looks like Koush updated it and it appears to be working properly. This was the first app I ever bought back in 2010 when I first rooted my Eris and couldn't get clockworkmod recovery to install, the moderators at the time recommended ROM Manager to me to get it installed as nothing else worked.
Yeah, but both didn't work.
I used now the adb commands on my one, still remembering them from my Nexus One, and see it works
For sure fastboot and adb will work. I used it very recently when my n4 updated. Just make sure to download the latest cwm. Had a boot loop the first time as I used an old one. Hehehe
Edit: actually not sure if it was the old fastboot files or cwm that caused the error. Anyway I updated my sdk so everything works well

Actually all the tools booted the phone fine in the fastboot mode, telling me flashing the recovery is fine.
But every time i wanted to reboot in the recovery i got this android roboter with the red alarm...
with the normal adb commands everything was really fine!
You're getting that because flashing custom recovery alone without modifying a file or two generates stock recovery every after a reboot. Go to your /system folder and look for recovery-from-boot.p and rename that to whatever you like then flash the custom recovery again

Sounds great, will try that.
Thank you.
Sorry if this is redundant, but I tried to find an answer searching. apologies in advance if this is a repeat question.
I've rooted and run custom roms on other android devices in the past, but these were devices that never received OTA updates from the carrier/manufacturers. With that said, I have one single question. If I root my nexus 4 and run clockwork mod recovery, will I still receive OTA updates? I don't want to run a custom rom at this time, but I wouldn't mind doing so in the future. I also want the ability to run titanium backup and adjust the color profile of my screen. Part of the appeal of the nexus 4 is receiving updates directly from google and I would like to keep this feature. Any insight would be appreciated.
I run a mac, so I was planning on running this instruction set as there isn't a toolkit for macs (at least that I know of).
http://www.androidrootz.com/2012/11/how-to-root-nexus-4-on-mac.html
You will receive the update but it will fail at installation because of the custom recovery. You can however, flash the .zip file through recovery to successfully update.
If I simply root my device (keep the bootloader locked and do not install clockwork mod), will I receive OTA updates? I'm a big fan of getting OTA'. I believe I only need root access to run titanium mod and screen calibration tools.
You need to unlock your bootloader to fastboot boot a custom recovery to flash the SU binaries.
If you unlock your bootloader and just boot the custom recovery (not flash it) to gain root, you will get the OTA. It will only install successfully if you keep it stock and don't change the kernel, system UI, or anything else.
I decided to throw caution to the wind. I'm going all in and running clockwork mod and so forth. Very simple to complete. I don't know why I why I was so concerned about the OTA updates.

yah cause at the end of the day... the ota update will be on this site the day of or the day after google releases it. like it was said above, just download and flash it.

If it's anything like the Nexus 7 or Galaxy Nexus this isn't true. On those device it will reboot to the recovery and fail initially but it gives you the option to start the installation. Once you do that it installs successfully and then CWMR asks if you want to keep root, then asks if you want to restore permanent recovery.

This must be a new feature of CWR. It wasn't like that in the past.

It could be new. I haven't owned Nexus devices for a long period of time. Running v6+ on all of them.
Edit: I didn't see you were talking about clockwork mod recovery here! Sorry for not reading!

Hi
First of all, this is don't habitual for me since I used to read related post (and more if an update has just arrived) but I just could not find an specific instructions (sorry if I am being too demanding) to go from custom 4.2.1(PA) to stock and finish with rooted 4.2.2, there are a lot of several procedures or recommendations to perform the update :S
well this is what I have planed
- return to stock 4.2.1 (using nexus toolkit)
- download and flash manually the update to 4.2.2 (first try to use the ota update option)
- get root... how??? lol
- restore my apps/data
Since I will return to stock I think I will lose root, that is ok but only if i can root the nexus again, Will I be able to get root on 4.2.2? or I have to root in 4.2.1 and keep it (in some way) at the time I update to 4.2.2

Rooting every nexus is the same. Flash/boot a custom recovery and flash supersu.zip. it doesn't matter what OS version its on.

ok, I think I have missing that simple thing...
I don't have to worry about get the bootloader locked again therefore I just have to flash a recovery and SU when I have my N7 on 4.2.2, but...flash from... bootloader I guess, well, I will check that.
Thanks!
Learn the manual way of doing it and don't rely on toolkits. There are many tutorials walking you through the entire process

To elaborate on Pirateghost's points...
After flashing the 4.2.2 update... you will lose your recovery (CWM or TWRP)... but getting your recovery back is also part of how you (re)gain root.
As I have posted elsewhere...
Rooting is really simple.
(You will need an unlocked bootloader for this).
Get a custom recovery .img for your device...
Either CWM - http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
...or TWRP - http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2/103,
...it matters little which...
-----------
fastboot flash it.
-----------
Get Chainfires SU .zip package here http://download.chainfire.eu/310/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.04.zip
Flash it using the custom recovery you've just fastboot flashed..
Reboot... and you're rooted.
-----------
...and that's it basically... you have root, a custom recovery from which you can flash ROMs, perform nandroid backups, etc.
But fastboot is the key... learn how to use it, and you will never need to be reliant on anybodies toolkit.

Hi, I just got a new Nexus 7 and I want to root it.
Every guide I look at it seems you have to lose everything on the device, is there a way around this?
Thanks!

Hi, zootylicious...
No, unfortunately not. Rooting requires unlocking the bootloader. For security reasons, unlocking the bootloader will perform a factory reset.... and which will wipe everything on the device.
There are currently no known 'root exploits' for KitKat... such as the old motochopper 'exploit' that worked so well under Jellybean 4.2.2... and rooted the Nexus 7 WITHOUT unlocking the bootloader.
Since Jellybean 4.3 and onward to KitKat 4.4.2, such 'exploits/vulnerabilities' have been 'closed' by Google.... so if you wish to root your Nexus 7, you're going to have to do it the old fashioned way...
----------------------------------------------
** Unlock the bootloader... will wipe the device.
** Fastboot flash a Custom Recovery (CWM or TWRP).
** Download to the Nexus 7, Chainfire's SuperSU root updater .zip
** Boot into the previously fastboot flashed Custom Recovery, and flash the SuperSU .zip.
** Reboot - you're rooted.
----------------------------------------------
Read the 'stickies' and the many excellent guides on this forum for more details.
Hope this helps.
Rgrds,
Ged.
If its new then I presume you have just installed lots of apps that you don't want to reeinstall. Google will "backup"apps and will automatically download and reinstall them when you set up the tablet again after bootloader unlock and root. The Bootloader can usually be relocked for warranty issues. You can use wugfresh nexus toolkit its pretty safe and easy to use.

Thanks for the replies.
I thought I'd just post an update on what I was doing.
I managed to root without losing anything by using adb to back up everything before I unlocked.
Searched a lot of forums and couldn't really find anything. So basically the problem is I rooted my nexus 4(Using Kingo Android root) and everything went quite successfully.I saw the bootloader screen and the menu came up,etc. However once I installed some applications which require super root access It gave the error "The phone is not rooted" so I downloaded a root checker and it also confirmed this. However I can access the Android recovery if I hold the right keys and there is an unlock icon when I boot up my phone. Not really sure why this is happening.
p.s:I'm not really used to the technical jargon as I am a relatively new user to android.
Thanks

do you have Superuser or SuperSu on your phone. Do you have busybox installed? Do you have a custom recovery installed? Personally I never heard of the the toolkit you used. I used Wugs when I did mine

Umm I don't know if I have Superuser,I got a notification when I attempt to use applications which require superuser access stating I do not have superuser access. Also no I did not download any of the above applications as they all require root access which my phone( for some reason) says I don't have.Which is the main problem.
I can access that screen where there is an android having open-heart surgery(Is that the bootloader?)
Thats pretty much it.I didn't install any additional software after rooting it with that. And tbh the only reason I used that is because it was a one-click root process
Toolkits are pretty useless. All that is needed to root a nexus device is to unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery (technically optional), use custom recovery to flash supersu.
The unlock icon means bootloader is unlocked, do you have a custom recovery yet such as TWRP or clockworkmod?

none of them are truly one click and rooting this phone is not that difficult. To be honest if you have a problem following rooting instructions for a Nexus may I say rooting may not be for you and quit while your a head. If you used a toolkit you might be able to download Superuser from playstore and test your root.

lets be honest toolkits are useful for most that need a little help. For more advanced users of course its an issue. Flashing a recovery would still require downloading of software and understand adb slightly.

I'm not sure if I have. But when I hold certain keys when turning it on it does bring an interface which says clockwork something at the bottom(Maybe the mod?)
