I have been using this for a while and now w/ the new radio needing a "primer program" this works great for me!
Now that we all have built in GPS, I would like to introduce you to what I use to start my GPS. I open Navizon, turn on my wifi, and pause till it is open. Then I open my mapping ap (I like Live Search).
Navizon gets started quickly with the cell tower and wifi access point triangulation, and then gets the gps chip going quickly; so live search is ready to go by the time I get in a destination.
Navizon:
http://www.navizon.com
Navizon is a wireless positioning system that works a little bit like a GPS, except it uses Cellular Towers and Wifi access points instead of satellites. In addition to being a wireless position system, Navizon offers features like the Directions, Buddy finder, Geotags and more...
This software relies on a community of users who contribute data to the system (WiFi and Cellular towers) when they have a GPS device. And the cool thing is that we can earn money doing it with the Navizon reward system:
http://www.navizon.com/navizon_rewards.asp
I'm already using it and you could make money too with it if you're interested. All you need is to install it on your phone and have Navizon connected to your GPS. Every Wifi access points that you pass, every cell tower that you log will mean money in your pocket.
So now that we have a phone that is compatible with Navizon, you should really check it out.
If you plan on registering, please do so by clicking on the link below:

That way, I can also earn some referral points if I'm the one who introduced you to the system ;-)
If you like the wifi positioning by itself - you can cash in your first $20 payout for the full version, after that it gets popped into your paypal account, and if you turn your friends onto it you can get a little extra too!
In fact, hey birthday boy, Mike (wideawake), why not put a link to this in the help ppcgeeks thread, I bet it would generate a bit of "mad money"!
UPDATE: This is no longer relevant - uncheck load at startup in settings...(edit - I do have one nitpick w/ this ap though; I have to go and delete the ap from the windows/startup folder all the time - I don't need it to start at boot for cryin' out loud! - eh I should make a mortscript to delete it at closing the ap or something..)

Anyone like this, hate this, already use it, I personaly realy like it. I had tried it over a year ago when I had a 6700 and no bluetooth, and didn't have good accuracy, but no programatic problems. Now, I use it everytime I go anywhere at all new, I'm kind of addicted!
Over 350 views, and no responces? Does everyone already use it?
I installed it and kept it running to see how long it would take to drain the battery. My battery went from 97% charged to a low battery warning in about 5.5 hours. That was with the screen turned off, too. The GPS, Wifi, and cellular radio were all enabled during this period.
This app (or, more accurately: the way it uses your hardware) sucks your battery dry, so be sure to have a charger handy.

5.5 hours? you are VERY lucky. it pulled my mogul from 90% to warning about about an hour.
JD
Krap Sakes, it's not for walkin around on a reg basis - the WiFi on the mogul will suck the battery dry quicker than a $20 ho when you give 'er a $50!
(think about it...)
I rarely use it except when I'm driving and plugged in. I might go ahead if I knew I was walking in a prime spot, but to walk around for 5+ hours Navizoning, I would want a car battery! Same as wardriving, it's on the heavier side of what our moguls can do, but it can, so we do!
If I was going to walk with it I might actually consider one of those "Solar Cell" hat things...
I've earned about $80 to my paypal so far just running this on my mogul since I first heard about it...
Code:
# mapped Points
Wifi discovered by you 8374 25122
Cell towers discovered by you 860 12900
Wifi already mapped 4615 4615
Cell towers already mapped 667 1334
Bonus points 0
Total: 43971
You have claimed 4 rewards
so i can verify they do pay off cuz my paypal now has balance!

I signed up under the post obove me, maybe this could become a pyramid scheme...
But after using for a day have found when with wifi, gps & evdo network with verizon the battery drain is crazy. I think the battery gauge even went down while plugged into my hadsfree kit in the car.
Try going into the wifi card settings (start/settings/connections/wireless lan/power settings tab) and set the slider to either the middle setting (what I use) or best battery. Then in the power settings of Navizon and check 'let Navizon manage power', then set the slider to the middle setting. For best power savings you could also set your backlight settings lower (I do this sometimes, not always).
That works pretty well for me, the car charger still makes the power bar go up!
Good luck, and post back your results...
I did both of those setting today and it worked good.
Did find one problem, i removed my handset from the car cradle to use outside the coar for a call that lasted about ten minutes then when i replaced the phone the charging light came on blinking not solid and the battery just kept dropping. After doing some reading found out that phone charging did thermal shutdown because of heat and would not charge battery untill it cooled down.
Seems the wifi, gps and phone call all at same time really start to heat things up.
Especially if you have it it the hot sun i.e. on your dash.
I try to make sure I don't have anything else open as well, the more open, the more battery used.
i installed this today and cant get the program to run without a fatal error
im running DCD 3.0.1 and everytime i try to start the service it crashes and will not give a detail description on the error as i have the free version
anyone else having this problem?

i just got my first reward today, used it to upgrade to the premium version for free. thankfully im on a campus that has a couple thousand routers, and no one else smart enough to use this program, so all are mine for the taking...
Aside from the money aspect, its just kinda fun and addicting, to walk around see how many u can get
ENJOY!!
after having so much trouble trying to get the program to run correctly and having major battery drain after installing the program i removed it and dont expect to be going back
I've had great results so far. Just one day's use and over 1000 points. I found that it seems to pick up more in residential areas.
Also for anyone thinking of signing up, share the love.

Must have just missed your post yesterday. Do you have .netcf 3.5 installed? did you soft reset after install before running it the first time? these are the most commeon reasons for errors. personally I would have tried a reinstall. However it's not going to be for everyone. hit me up if you want more help.
Otherwise,

i have ran the sync multiple times and i have uninstalled and reinstalled the program multiple times and still get the same error

open the app "droidsans tweak tools" and there's a button to disable auto-rotate.
I don't see that app... What am I missing?
I know im not crazy. Just a n00b
Are you talking about auto-rotate in the browser or for the home screen?
If it's the browser, you can disable it the browser settings. If it's the home screen, you need to search the market for DroidSans Tweak tools and disable it there.
At some point, you must have un-installed DST if your home screen is auto-rotating.
I bet thats what it is. The guy I bought the phone from did a wipe, and all the apps were lost, but the firmware was still on there.
You guys kick ass. Thanks for your patience. Ive had alot of questions since just yesterday and you guys always help within 5 minutes!
It worked like a charm. I love this community!

i agree...this forum rocks. i'm not very tech savvy, but i was able to root my G1, have apps installed to the SD card, etc, etc...all because of the kick-ass members of XDA.
and before the G1, this community helped me get WM6.1 on my dash.
xda is full of g1 jedis(im not one) they have helped me alot as well..so thanks guys
Is anyone else getting error messages when waking the phone back up? I would occasionally (1 out of 20 times) get an "application 'so-and-so' has stopped responding" and tapping "wait" would continue through the error like nothing else was wrong. As soon as I shut auto-rotate off, those errors went away. It was always a different program, too.

Happens to me every now and then, not as often though, may be once out of 50 times. See what program it is, if it's one from the market then you can remove it ( I would, I don't need anything on my phone that doesn't run correctly or hogs my precious memory). If it's stock... well.. you're SOL, just wait for Android to implement some better way of managing memory.
Good luck

I've noticed on occasion I also get it with auto-rotate disabled, but not nearly as often. Maybe a couple times so far since I've gotten my replacement last week.
When it would hang, it was pretty much any random process. One time it was Alarm, other times something else, never a particular process. I think it has to do with the phone sleeping and maybe the accelerometer is oriented one way and it wakes up for an event in another position and then hangs - I don't know. It was never really a problem and I don't think the hung processes were wasting battery so I'll just reenable it.
I posted a while ago about the GPS failing to find even a single satellite. I got no responses, just a redirect to this forum. Since then I have searched and searched but no one has a solution to this common problem. I watched a video about cleaning the antenna contacts and performed this cleaning - no help. I have tried numerous apps that are supposed to help - no help. I took the tablet out of its case - no help. I even set the tablet out in the backyard for 45 minutes with a GPS app running as was suggested by someone - no help. I can't find anything at all about updating or re-installing GPS drivers or firmware so i don't know if that is even an option, but if there is a way to do this I would sure like help trying that. I have Titanium backups from before the GPS outage but I don't know which ones control the GPS.
It is as though this is a taboo subject and no one wants to even talk about it, but I did see that LOTS of people are having the same problem. Doesn't anyone have a solid solution short of just buying a new tablet? The GPS worked on a flight from TX to TN last March but never worked again after that. Could something on that flight have jammed or disabled my GPS?
If anyone has a solid solution based on actual resolution of this same problem, a lot of people would appreciate knowing about it.
Thank you.
Oooh i luv a good conspiracy! xD
Although i don't think taboo has any thing to do with it, now, if we were talking about dwarf elephants, sodomy and juggling then that would be troubling! But i think the empire is too busy tripping over the trump disaster to jam your gps. xD
okay, start by cycling through your back ups and find the one that worked, though i don't know much about titanium backup. It would have been smarter to use an actual recovery to make you backups.
The reason most common for not finding an answer or even a lead to one is insufficient data.
I have a tab4 and gps doesn't work, is literally nothing to go on.
What OS and/or firmware were/are you running? Did you install a custom kernel? Did you modify your OS with questionable applications or modifications that came at a cost or broke something?
What tab 4 is your tab 4? there are about 11-16 of them. Specifying the 8.0 is still not good enough.
It is interesting that you got some function on a flight. That's definitely worth a ? . I don't think a "jamming device" would fry your gps though.
I would say that you should first restore your tab back to cherry, meaning the original state you purchased/recieved it in and walk your mod process forward. Take notes and get logs.
m
Moonbutt74, thanks for responding.
My Tab 4 8.0 is model SM-T330NU
It's rooted & has several of the nice apps that can be used on rooted devices. Nothing was added between the time the GPS worked and when I noticed it not working. I am ALMOST certain of that. If there were a way to check logs for changes maybe I could get a clue - hadn't thought of that 'till now. Do you know how to do that? I suppose restoration to original state may end up being necessary, but I would sure like to avoid that. Everything else works just as I like it except for the fact that Google is still spying on me. There's no stable custom ROM yet as far as I can tell.
Yes, GPS worked fine on several commercial flights. It's fun seeing things on the ground and seeing what they are on the map + knowing speed and ETA.
O,
okay that's the main question, in -flight i guess your "line of sight" to gps satellites is unhindered, if it's anything like satellite tv service, then what's you situation on ground? Meaning canopy, and cloud cover. Back up your full current rom through recovery to external sd card. And then revert your tab to it's factory state. If you haven't modified the contents of your system directory after rooting then after doing factory reset while in recovery should put you back to your initial state.
Logging,
if you don't know how to set up adb there are plenty of threads dedicated to the subject, get that set up.
once your tab is cherry, get it connected to your pc abd run adb shell
once in adb shell run logcat -c to clear your log
start a gps related function or app
run logcat without any arguments for a "live" logcat
You have a huge log to go through , but go through every line.
You'll get the idea of how to read the log as you go.
We know that as of the LP 5.1.1 update to the sm-t330nu that samsung tried to disable ir blaster, so who knows?
I didn't know the wifi variants had gps.

I have posted this in a new thread, but I'll tell you the short version: My Allow Mock Locations was disabled in Settings/General/Developer options/Allow mock locations...). When I enabled this my GPS started working. Such a simple thing but a total odyssey to find out about it. OB
I am addicted to phone so i installed it to prevent.Unluckily it is not working in RR,but works well in Morphose.
In RR several second after i locked phonewith this, the interface of the app covering the screen just pass away and i am able to use the phone.Anyone knows why?
App attached.
Hi,
The attachment is giving a 404 error.
If you are really that addicted, just flash a custom rom and hope something goes wrong.
If the above does not work, you could try some waterproof tests, drop it while dishwashing, leave it in your pants so your wife can wash it in the machine.
Just go ride a bike, or go for a walk, half an hour an hour a day, leave your phone at home, to start with. An app preventing you to do actions on your phone will not help you, you need to be away from the device.
Let us know how you enjoy nature.
So whenever I do a full wipe and then install a new ROM this hacker seems to get access again right away. Is it possible that s RAT or malware is in the file make_ext4fs that is used when formatting?

I'd start with how the hacker is getting to your phone in the first place. Do you have insecure wifi? Have you tried not having your Bluetooth on? How could they modify make_ext4fs in the first place (unless you downloaded it from a weird place or whatever you're using to format is also compromised)? What exactly are they doing?
My guess is they gained access to my home network by having my wireless router. I know it's hacked and I think they cloned my phone too. I try to open apps like device emulator and it just gets closed without an error. Any app that will let me spoof or try to gain control back will just close right after i open it. Download speeds are ridiculously slow or everything will download close to 99% and then magically get cancelled.
One other weird thing that happens is no matter what ROM I install I eventually get a screen showing "android is upgrading" and I have to wait until it reaches 100%. I say it's weird because when I first rooted my phone and was trying different ROMS I don't remember seeing that screen ever. I always keep my Bluetooth off and anything else not in use.
