Hi all, I've had my Nexus for about a month now. I've been extremely careful with it and hadn't dropped it once up until yesterday. It was on my lap in the car and took about a two foot fall to the ground when I got out of the car. It landed in a few inches of snow and then hit the concrete beneath, but didn't appear to suffer any water damage as I immediately pulled it out and began wiping it off. The phone suffered no apparent physical damage; it landed on the top edge near the headphone jack. It didn't bounce so it only hit the ground once. The only damage that can be seen is on the official bumper that was on it at the time: there are two minor dents in the plastic. None of the glass surfaces were scratched, chipped or cracked. Screen turned on and device seemed to be unaffected and working properly. Pheewwwww, looks like I dodged a bullet, right?
10 minutes later, while trying to use the phone, the screen starts to glitch out badly. Flickering, brightness going up and down, screen turning off and on, the image being displayed was moving around all over the place. There were three instances where it turned on and operated normally for a minute but then began glitching again. Then it would only turn on to a white screen, then it would sort of light up to a light gray but then slowly go back to a black screen. However, it still responded to touch with vibrations. So the phone was still on, and working, just not displaying an image. After the battery died, plugging it in to charge yields only the red light of death. No response from any button pressing combinations.
Does anyone else find it find of pathetic that this phone took this fall, suffered no external physical damage but apparently it's screen couldn't survive the shock? It would make more sense if it landed screen face down and broke the glass, but the phone appears completely undamaged and it's surprising that the internals didn't survive such a minor shock. Obviously, the official bumper didn't absorb any of it.
I don't expect any phone to be able to withstand being dropped from a considerable height, and even if a minor fall caused it obvious physical damage then I would accept it. But it should at the very least be durable enough to not be rendered useless by simple physical shock. Every phone gets dropped and should be built to withstand at least some of it.
Hopefully, I can get Google to send me a new phone.

Doesn't sound like it was the drop that killed it but the water. My guess is that a small amount of water got in and caused an issue. Could have been water that remained under the bumper and took a few minutes to soak in. Disassembly may fix the issue but not sure if you want to do that. No reason for google to send you a new phone. They did not drop it in the snow. :crying:

Do you honestly expect people to read this in the Q&A section? Go to reddit for rants.
Anyways, whether a phone survives a drop (no matter the height) is pretty much entirely up to chance. It doesn't mean it's a build defect. I've seen drop tests of this phone from many feet and it's fine. I've accidentally dropped mine like 4 ft onto a tiled floor and it's fine.
Re: Minor drop of Nexus 4 killed the screen
mine fell out of a plane bounced of a volcano then got stomped on by a herd of elephants while studying in the african safari then got struck by lightning...no physical damage just lost root doing the 4.2.2 update

Sorry, it is a bit of a rant but really I just wanted people's opinions on why my particular phone proved so fragile. I removed the bumper to be sure there was no water left on the phone, and honestly it didn't get much snow on it at all. So I don't think it suffered any water damage.
I understand it's not Google's fault I dropped the phone but it's not my fault it couldn't endure a minor fall that didn't seem to cause it any damage. I've dropped every cell phone I've ever owned, numerous times and never had one break internally like this on the first drop. It's unacceptable.

From your own description of the problem I don't think you got it dried as well as you think you did. If it was damaged from the fall it would have probably happened right away. Your issue took 10 minutes to materialize. About the amount of time it would take water to seep in. Water damage is not a poor build or fragile phone issue. Water is the killer of phones.

I agree, water is bad. But the phone still responds to being plugged in. Blinking red light when plugged in and my PC shows it's connected. It's not fried from water damage. At this point it just won't turn on.
I dropped my Nexus S many times. I even dropped it in the toilet when I was slightly drunk (fell out of my top pocket!) but I was so quick I grabbed it before it got too wet and dried it off immediately! I highly doubt the Nexus 4 is as robust.
Definitely sounds like a water issue to me. Turn off your phone and put a bag of dry rice to help pull out the moisture.
P.S. The phone in lap syndrome is the number 1 killer of phones lol I had it happen to me before. It's just to easy to forget you put your phone there esp when you are in a hurry.

There's no way my phone took on even a fraction of the amount of water that it would if I had dropped it into a puddle or a toilet like you did. That's what I'm trying to say. I told about it landing in snow so as to not leave out any details about the situation. And it seems that if it suffered water damage the entire thing would be a brick. But it still shows some signs of life.

That is not true. The small amount of water could have only affected the circuit or a component that the screen uses.

Okay well its been nearly 24 hours since this happened. You think the water would've dried by now? The only place the snow could've gotten into the phone is probably the headphone jack. And there's no water corrosion on any of the contacts.
You should have dried it for 24 hrs before turning it on. Not turn it on, find problems, try to dry it.
Im going to assume since it landed near the headphone jack that some snow got pushed up into it. It being frozen probably didnt do much at the time but when it thawed out it probably ran down a VERY small part of the circuit board and is making the phone flip out. Water will not always 100% kill a device, it will only effect the part of the circuitry it is touching.
It is too early to see corrosion from it if you ever see any at all. Ive seen many water damaged devices that look totally fine on the outside but on the inside where the water got it turned all the solder joints green and crossed up a bunch of things.
I say if its still showing signs of life then you MAY have a chance. Like others have said put it in some rice for at least a couple days. DO NOT try and charge it or power it on anymore. Remember its not the water itself that usually damages things, its the power put to a wet device that does it.
Re: Minor drop of Nexus 4 killed the screen
Trying to turn the phone on after possible water damage was probably the dumbest thing you could have done. Water damage wouldn't completely fry the phone, as someone said it probably just shorted something.

No. It's not a good example. I didn't trash my phone on purpose and expect google to give me a new one. I didn't drop it out of a two story window, I didn't drag it through the mud, it didn't land in a puddle. It broke first time I ever dropped it. And like I said, it was a minor fall. If all phones were this fragile, no one would have a phone. If they all succumbed to such apparent minor water damage, you wouldn't know anyone who dropped their phone in the toilet and it still worked.
There's people all over this forum who rooted their phones, flashed it with a custom kernel or ROM, now their phone wont turn on and they expect a new phone from google even though they were knowingly screwing with their phones. I drop mine, it shows no physical damage, and everyone thinks I'm lying about the circumstances, as if I have to convince you people to send me a new phone. This is ridiculous. I joined this forum for a little bit of advice but really all I've gotten is criticism and doubt. I've got no reason to lie to you people about what happened.
You have no right to mock me, exaggerate what happened and act like I'm just some asshole who threw his phone against the wall and expects a new phone. Its pathetic. Thanks for your help, children.
Re: Minor drop of Nexus 4 killed the screen
You neglected to move the phone before exiting your car, your carelessness murdered your cell phone.
It's not a basketball, cell phones aren't made to bounce off the ground and survive.
It's not a rubber duck, cell phones aren't made to get wet.
I wish people would claim even an once of responsibility.

First of all, I'm a big guy (just under 300lbs.). Yesterday I caught my toe as I was going up on my porch and started stumbling. It's a narrow porch and I did not have enough distance to catch my balance. So, I turned to my side and took a dive off of the two foot high porch into the ground. Yes, I'm still sore.
The unfortunate thing is, I wear my phone on my belt on that side and I landed squarely on it.
Once I checked myself out for injuries, I thought "My phone! I just paid $400 for it and I bet I smashed it!".
I look at it and there are no visible signs of damage. Then I try to turn it on. Nothing. So, the whole time I'm getting cleaned up from the incident, I'm thinking "What could be wrong?" Whatever it was, I was fully intending on trying to fix it myself. Once I was ready for work I decided to take the battery out and look under it for hidden damage. It looked fine. I popped the battery back in and tried to turn it on. Bingo! It works fine. I guess the jarring very briefly disconnected the battery which locked it up.
Just like the half dozen other HTC phones I've owned, this is one tough phone.
Maybe you just thought you landed squarely on it. Maybe something else like the cased itself absorbed most of the shock. But it def is great that your phone isnt broken.
I landed on my side once on concrete and broke a canon camera that was in my pocket lol.
It has to do with the way the force is transferred through it, the proportion of the weight that it was subjected to... damaging blows are not necessarily high force hits, but high CONCENTRATION hits onto surfaces that have no give, like being dropped on a corner onto concrete. Being smushed between a big guy's belt and the lawn is not a real test of durability.
I'm sorry if I gave the impression that I considered this some kind of torture test. I understand the physics of the fall. But, from the way my side hurt where the phone was crushed into it, it definitely took a licking and kept on ticking.

Yeah, it does depend on how the shock was delivered from your holster to the phone. If you're a big guy and have a lot of gut on you (no offense), then your body also absorbed some of the shock from falling, and you're gut held the phone in place. It's hard to explain over text, being a biology major, I know somewhat of physics and how it works on the human body.
I just switched from an iPhone 3gs with a plastic back and I was actually afraid to hold it too tightly in case I broke it! G2 is a huge improvement for sure.. It's nice not to have a fragile phone that isn't a ten year old Nokia.
That's good to know. I've dropped mine 5 times (wood floor/carpet), and there's only a scratch on the battery cover from the 1st drop.

Dropped mine today for the 1st time since..Got it on launch..Not a scratch or dent..Fell face flat on tile floor..No damage at all Had a friend who dropped his iphone on carpet and broke the screen!!
Using the mobile in a bath, obviously without any direct water contact, later I placed the mobile by the side of the bath.
Upon using the mobile (out of the bathroom) I noticed the mobile was a little moist and wet on the behind - as the rubber case had caught some water.
I wiped this, and a few minutes later when the mobile was on standby, the car dock app opens up automatically.
Then moments later the screen begins to flicker and turn bright - dim - black - bright. Removed the battery and found some water inside, the lower case was the same, found traces of water on the simcard and memory card.
I left the mobile in front of a heater for 10 minutes, but everything back and its working. The battery case has a label which seems to have some water trapped as you can see this label is slightly lifted now.
Im glad its working as I don't think it would have been repaired under warranty firstly due to water damage and 2ndly due to it having custom rom.
Would you guys know if rain damage is covered under warranty, as surely this would be general usage and HTC don't even supply a cover/case in the box.
I don't take my phone in the bathroom due to condensation... which is what caused your problems.
I doubt rain damage will be covered by warranty... since it's within the users power to not use it in the rain and not get it wet!
Common sense prevails... or at least should previal
There's a indicator in the phone that will change colour after contact with liquids. When its red/pink you can forget about any warranty.

what were u thinking??????????
Well,I too take my phone to the bathroom at two circumstances:When I'm having a shower and when I...ermm...poo(sorry ladies...if there are any around here! ).
Well,in the first case I only hear music and cover it with my T-Shirt so that it's safe from moisture.
In the second case, well,I do have the window open for reasons I don't really have to clarify here and no moisture there.
So my phone is safe in my bathroom.
There is some water proof casings for DHD try to google for ''otterbox'' saw one there.
Good luck with your device. Most phones and electronics says nighty night after a while when they've been wet.
No problem with water on electronics.
It the shorting it does when its powerd thats the actual problem.
But yeah taking your phone into the bathroom is not smart.
We have a sauna and i do take my phone (and a portable speakerset) in there but i put it in a (thin) plastic bag seal that up and can still use the screen. Love to hear music in the sauna.
Use Ziplock Bag
Hi guy if you need to bring your HTC into a bath or to accompany you in the bathroom for other purposes you can use a water tight ziplock bag to contain it. It will prevent the phone from contacting moisture AND you can still use the touchscreen.
I used to have a blackberry (obviously belonging to my my company ) that I bring into my weekly sauna session. It lasted a good 2 years in that humidity and heat! When it finally malfunctioned I realised it was because of some leaks in the ziplock bag. So remember to change the bag often.
My Desire, on the other hand, did not last as long coz I brought it into the bath room with no ziplock. In 9 months I am forced to switch to the DHD.
So ziplock bag yah?
i dropped my Desire HD in the snow .. it became all wet .. took out the battery, kept it warm for a half day and its still working fine with no problem at all .. Been almost 2 month now
Hi Guys,
I made this thread to see if anyone else had experienced this with their SGS
I was petting my dog while i was holding my phone in my other hand, the dog got excited and knocked the phone in my hand and it dropped from approx 50cm on the grass and the phone was also in a thick leather cover... took the phone in my hand and went inside to make a phone call when i noticed it was off! Hmm, i take out the battery put it back in, phone starts fine, i turn the phone to attac the battery cover, turn the phone around ind it was off again, since then i can't turn on my phone......
Of course the phone has no visibile damage whatsoever.....
I am truly amazed and can't get over it.... phone is brand new, 1w old.... INCREDIBLE.... i have no warranty over the phone.
Please tell me there is a fix to this, i love this phone very much...
50 cm drop onto grass in a leather cover? Sorry but smells like BS. Probably no point in asking if it got wet, grass was bone dry no doubt.
Mine took a bounce off pavement from about 4 feet and works like a champ. (also in the 1st week, man I'm holding my next shiny device tight for the first month!)
of course yes dry,no other factors, what is BS?
p.s. also plugged in charger... nothing happens...
this is sooo frustrating because this was like the best way to drop your phone...
Mine fell out of the gym locker about a meter high unto a concrete like surface and it works just fine, no scratches.
BS=Bull**** - he's calling you a liar....
Not possible that there was a stone or rock in the grass? Does your case cover the whole screen? There's a definite weak point in the design where the glass covers the home/back/menu buttons, but if there's no screen damage...
Good luck. And blame the dog!

x2 - I was actually really surprised how well it took a direct pavement hit.
OP - does the battery stay firmly in place in the phone when the cover is off? Sounds like maybe there is bad contact between the battery and the phone. Check that first. No way that a fall like what you described could have damaged the phone. No way.

Tough luck, I guess. Mine has survived several drops (mostly from my shirt pocket) without any apparent damage. I have a CaseMate 'Barely There' case on it though -- maybe it actually works.
Sorry to hear, but there is zero chance that a phone will break like that.
So it must been bad to start with.
Take of the cover and look at the battery and the contacts so they are okey.

If it's new then why doesn't it have warranty? Just say to them it stopped working, no need to say it fell.
I can vouch for the solidity of (my) SGS -- it's dropped from hip height onto concrete paving slabs, which grazed the back cover a little; and fell, when I was running, onto the pavement, bouncing along a few times and off the kerb, coming to rest under a car.
This scuffed the bezel a bit, but otherwise my phone is still as good as new.
The recessed glass certainly helps prevent the screen taking any of the hit.

Ok, broken's the wrong word - they don't align with the others.
Could that be a software issue, fixed with flashing again? I mean, if it'd be the display, wouldn't the pixels just stay black?
I've acidentaly dropped my phone today on the parking lot(it fell from the height of around 1m-heght of my pants poket) and the glass on the screen is totally shaterd. I guess this phone is not as hard as they claim, or I had bad luck. :/

Dropped my phone for the second time last night, onto a cement floor. No damage -- first time was on a travertine floor, and no damage. In fact it bounced. Maybe I'm, lucky or maybe (as I suspect from other posts) all Gorilla Glass is not made the same.
Same here. The phone bounced like a ball when I accidentally dropped it. Thankfully everything is ok.

Dropped mine 10 foot off a scissor lift and it hit a job box and flew sideways another 10 feet into a wall without a scratch. But then I had a simple 3 foot drop on gravel rock that scratched the glass. I think my otterbox case helps prevent more damage. Ive dropped this phone a dozen times now without problems except the seemingly least likely one to cause damage is the only one that did any. I dropped it into a floor drain with 140 degree fahrenheit running water where it laid for about 2 minutes while I found a glove to get it out with and it didnt do any damage. My old iPhone cant touch the DEFY in my line of work. Thats what I needed, a tough phone for a tough job.
the angle at which your phone is falling seriously matters! At some angles the shock while touching the ground transfers to the glass directly, then it will break, but some times the shock gets neutralized or transfered to some other parts, etc etc!
Angle matters..
the angle of collision sometimes will damage it....but i think the probability of shattering is like limit tending to almost zero...
I want to buy it but I heard that so many people's Nexus 4 phones shattered out of the blue??? I treat my phones with delicacy but these people say their phones broke from being in their pocket with nothing else in it. I have a SGS2 and it doesn't have a single scratch or bend or any flaw on its hardware visible view
Agree. I have had an SGSII for 18 months, 12 months without any sort of screen protector and I haven't had a single scratch on the screen (touch wood).
Mine and most others are fine, shattered out of the blue is a misnomer really, just means the owner doesn't know how it got broken, obviously it's not going to spontaneously shatter.
thanks guys. I'd like if some other people also shared their hardware experience because I don't want to regret buying this phone hence I live in the Bahamas. this means I won't be able to return it if something happened as quick and would cost a lot of money
There's already a ton of threads and discussion on this, but I'll oblige OP and provide my experiences once again.
Some background on my phone usage: I came from a Galaxy S which had the previous generation of Gorilla Glass. After over two years of heavy use without a case or screen cover, my phone had two very minor but broad scratches that could only been seen with the screen off and at certain angles under certain lighting. Screen on, you would never know the phone wasn't brand new.
My N4 arrived last Monday (two days use thus far) and I removed the packaging films from the front and rear. Haven't got a case but I ordered the Poetic Slimbook case, which I expect in December.
I haven't dropped the N4 and have placed it on many different surfaces (Thanksgiving table in a room with over a dozen eaters, so the table wasn't very clean). My phones have always sat in my front pocket. While the N4 has been occupying this same space, I've heard it hit a few tables and counters, which left me grimacing on the inside.
However, I'm glad to say that my N4 is pristine and has zero scratches, scuffs, or signs of wear. Both glass faces have stayed spotless and the oleophobic coating works very well. The plastic edges have not scuffed either, and don't seem too have picked up any oil/grime.
I really don't expect my phone to get scratched in any way over the next few years. I only got the case for extra protection when I am out or traveling. Also, I like flip cases
I wouldn't recommend this phone if you tend to be reckless with your phone and can't own up to it, so you make threads saying the screen randomly cracked. Those people would probably "bump" into a Window and break it, then blame the manufacturer for not making the glass bulletproof. I'm sure a lot of iPhone 4/4S users have scratched or cracked the glass faces on their phones, but no one said those phones were too fragile. The N4 is just as durable, if not more durable that the previous generation iPhone. If you are honest with yourself and think that you would mutilate an iPhone 4/4S, you should get a case and screen protector for the N4. It's not unusually fragile in any sense. Pretty durable in my opinion.
Maybe in two to three years, I'll end up with a few minor scratches that are invisible when the screen is on. For me, it's a phone, not a piece of art that is meant to be seen and not held. I really doubt that I'll scratch the phone now that I'm a bit older and wiser. The scratches on my old phone can be attributed to very drunken nights and surprise encounters with broken glass containers. Or perhaps some an unfortunate meeting with silicate on my old lab bench. Regardless, I learned how to take care of my phone without babying it.
No offense, but assuming everyone whose Nexus 4 spontaneously shattered isn't telling the whole story or is otherwise irresponsible is jumping to conclusions.
I set mine down to charge, returned 2 hours later, and the back had shattered around the speaker hole and radiated cracks throughout the rest of the back. I have no explanation for this other than the glass is potentially also sensitive to temperature change (warming battery/cool countertop). In any case, the fragility of the back of this phone is patently absurd for a mobile device and we can only hope Google/LG step up to rectify it. The internals of the phone are otherwise fantastic and it's a powerful device.

That being said, there are a very small number of people who's phone "breaks all by itself", I would imagine given any population that has a new device there will be a similar number of people who reports these kinds of problems. If you're too worried about it, throw a case on it.
Then again, maybe the case will break on its own too.
Well, you can always put a case around the case.

One time I was at my brother's place and he had this untouched Krispy Kreme donut just sitting on the table.
Two hours later he comes back and sees a bite in it and asked me who had eaten it...
My response?... nooo ideaaa!

News at 11. Guy with 4 posts and no credibility states his phone spontaneously cracked the back screen.
.....
I dropped this phone from 4 feet standing up from a chair on the patio, it was forcefully thrown from my lap, flipped multiple times, and skidded on "Cement", and not a scratch. Unless these ppl got some weird defaulted phone they are full of it.
Would I want to drop it again? Nope. But, the phone won't break from thin air. In fact every pic I have seen that had a broken screen/back, you could see the pressure spot where it was hit, smashed, and otherwise bludgeoned.

Thanks, very realistic perspective. I really don't know whether to get the SGS3 or N4 the n4 is so sexy but many people say its fragile and I treat my phones with the most extreme care I can give. I've never dropped my SGS2 except thrown on my bed.
If your used to taking care of your devices, then you should have no problem with this awesome N4!

similar story; mine slid off a paper towel machine in a public restroom hit HARD right on the front glass on the tile floor, bounced up and landed on the back. i thought for sure one or both sides was going to have a huge crack but to my pleasant surprise, neither side had any scratches.
...now if it spontaneously cracks the next time i charge it..i will deny any responsibility
woah.. I guess the phone isn't as fragile as it sounds.. why are people saying there are random cracks already though? are those just false rumors to make LG look bad? I'm so afraid the phone will break out of the blue..
I was on the phone at a party someone bumped into me and I dropped it onto a stone tile floor..I'm 6feet tall so that's a pretty decent drop..the only mark I have on the phone is a small nick in the bezel..both front and back are in tact..don't go throwing it around but id say its pretty solid
