My phone is off a lot of the time but it still uses up a lot of my power according to the battery use screen.
For example, right now my battery is at 45%, 9h 15m since unplugged. "Display" shows up at 48% of the power use. Time on is 58m. On my old Evo, Display was rarely on the top of the list. A day like today would have Cell Standby and Phone Idle at the top taking up over 50 - 60%.
Could it be the auto brightness setting that's sucking power? Anyone else getting these results?
I haven't had the time to try and figure out why, but yes, I am getting the same results on mine as well. Right now the battery is at 44% (9h 42m on), with the Display at 55% (1h 33m display on). Display has always been at the top of the list for me. The next three are Android OS 13% (1h), Cell Standby 13% (9h 42m), Phone Idle 8% (8h 14m)
Mine has been unplugged for about 1.5 hrs, and on for 35 minutes.
Voice Calls: 45%
Display: 33%
Cell Standby: 8%
I'm experiencing something similar. Gravis, are you on auto brightness? If not, what brightness level?

I use a power widget to scale my screen brightness as needed. I'm usually on the lowest setting since I'm mostly indoors but I had it on 100% all day yesterday since I was outside and it wasn't really draining my battery.

I too keep mine on the lowest setting as well. It's plenty bright enough for me. Also, I wouldn't trust those readings...it could also be related to the whole false reading of the reception and battery status symbol. Perhaps software related. Nevertheless, the screen still uses 20% less power than traditional lcd's.
Try keeping it off auto brightness and see how it does...should notice an improvement.

You mean 20% less then an average AMOLED? and then AMOLED is 30-40% over LCD
Guys... You WANT your screen to be the highest thing using battery. It doesn't mean that it is bad. It just means that the screen is taking MORE battery than other things. You need to take it for what it is. A comparison versus other items on the phone. Your screen using that much power is how it should be (think about your laptop... turn the screen down or off, battery goes right up). If your screen was at the bottom, it would mean that the actual PHONE was using a ton more power.

Good point. I'd rather have the screen eating power than say, the GPS. But I guess as long as the phone gets you through the it doesn't really matter, does it?
Does turning off the "Powering saving mode" option under "Sound and display" seem to help or hurt the situation?

Indeed.
Most of the GSM models have display at the top, while CDMA have standby and idle.
This is due to CDMA radios drawing a lot more power.
I too am experiencing the same thing... my battery life has been less than stellar, so I have taken it off auto-brightness and am using a black wallpaper to try and reduce the consumption. After being on for 4 hours, (I had to reboot several times this afternoon) my display has used 70%, the next down is cell stanby at 12% I was fully charged at 3:30 today - it is now 10 and I am down to 33% battery remaining, with moderate to minimal usage.
I guess a gorgeous display requires a lot of battery.....
Battery use has to add up to 100%, so something has to take a majority. 66% doesn't mean it took a huge part of your battery. Imagine this, you unplug your phone and then go on pandora for 15 minutes of the first 20 minutes unplugged. Say your battery was at 96ish by then. If you checked your battery usage and it said something like PANDORA: 75%, it means that pandora used 75% of the 4% that has been drained, not like pandora has some type of abnormal battery sucking bug in it (key word abnormal, i'm aware pandora wears on a battery). But get the gist? If it were "cell standby" and "phone idle" that were using the battery, then we'd have something to worry about seeing as the phone wouldn't even be in use during its times of most power consumption.
You people apparently never actually TALK on your phone. My voice calls take most of my power.

I can't quote this enough for emphasis.
Use your brains folks. If your battery is lasting all day and your screen is using half of your power draw, then you simply have a far more efficient phone than before.
And over the EVO, that makes a TON of sense. Your WiMax OFDM radio probably used up a higher percentage of your total power draw because it simply uses more power than our WCDMA UMTS radio.
Be happy - not disappointed. It means your battery is mostly being used up only when you actually use the phone as opposed to eating up all of your battery while it's just sitting in your pocket.

Rather than wasting time with not so clever posts, maybe it would be more beneficial to read the first post a bit closer. If you're not using the device a lot, you would expect the Display usage indicator to decrease over time and the other indicators such as Cell standby and Phone idle to increase over that same time period.
i was at 55% at about 5pm yesterday after 10+ hours of battery usage, 1.5hrs of screen, and probably 2 hours of LTE (the rest wifi). i use juice defender so when the screen is off it generally cuts data signals for me. well from 5pm to 9pm my battery went from 55% to 1% with maybe less than 30 minutes of usage (all on LTE though). i looked and no unwanted programs were running in the background.
i charged it overnight, got up and after an hour this morning of ALL standby (seriously the screen was on 3m), i went from 100% to 87%. that would mean on 100% standby the phone would have died within 8 hours, which is definitely not right or even similar to previous battery usage for me.
i restarted my phone, recharged, and so far it has been on for 40 minutes and the battery is at 99% with 2m of screen time, which makes a lot more sense. so have you ever experienced something like this where an android OS restart helps your battery, or does it sound like i might have a bad battery?

i am in fact ATT. sorry i haven't seen the other posts about it, have they broken through to figure out the root of the problem? any link to a thread about this? it's very, very odd. 8 hours of battery life is no good, too.

I seem to get it when I am in a poor LTE coverage area, which includes one of my offices. It is strange. "Cell Standby" will usually have the largest battery usage in your settings. My temporary fix is to turn off "mobile data" from the toggle in notifications, especially if you have wifi where you are. You can usually tell when the battery is being drained b/c your phone will stay warm even with no apps running and the screen off. The only other thing that seems to help is restarting it every day or so. When I don't have this problem, the battery life on this phone is amazing, so I don't think it's a bad battery. If you find out a better solution, please let me know!
I'm assuming you get off work at 5 and use the phone more. If so, turn off juice defender when you leave work. Since juice defender turns off your signal, you have to reconnect every time you use the phone. That kills battery more than anything

Doesnt that defeat the purpose of having JD? Has anyone shown than JD uses more battery than not having it at all?
Fyi cell standby doesnt actually use as much battery as it reports, its just incorrectly displayed on the battery meter. Hopefully there will be an update to fix it eventually. Google it if you want to fix it manually.

Cell standby is just a reporting bug. It is not actually draining your phone as much as it shows.
There are two separate problems. There is the problem on the international S3's where it is reporting cell standby incorrectly. There is another problem with some of the ATT S3's where they are continually connecting or re-connecting to the network where they have a poor LTE signal. This is actually using the battery. You can feel the heat from your phone when you have no apps open and it is normally cool to the touch. The only solution I have found so far is to turn off mobile data, and the phone will cool down again and stop draining battery.

Right. It's just cosmetic.
I don't have LTE in my area and my battery life is okay. I use wifi at my house and at work. I just think it could be better, but i am used to my dinc with my custom rom and kernel. Amazing battery life. I can't wait until we get some sweet roms and kernels for the S3. So far i am super impressed with the phone.

This isn't a problem that too many people are having, but there are enough that it must be a bug, at least for ATT. There is a toggle in your notifications that will turn off mobile data. I don't think it is enough to just turn it off and back on. If you are in an area with bad reception, you have to leave it off or the draining continues. If you find something else that works, please share with us.

I'm also seeing this issue; battery gets hot and drains quick in sleep.
I'm running stock, and only rooted.
I do notice when checking my battery that "Android System" is taking up the majority of my battery, by a considerable amount. Is anyone else who is experiencing the drain issue also seeing this under their battery reporting menu?
Just switched from my 2 yrs old iPhone 4 to this latest nexus 4. I noticed the standby mode is drain the battery much more significant than my old iPhone 4..
14% drop in less than 2hrs off the plug and only about 22 main of screen time. Is this normal? GPS off, WiFi off since I left my house, just a few minutes after unplug from the main.
Is this normal?
No. That does not seem normal. It may be a service running in the background not allowing the phone to sleep properly. You should be able to use the battery usage display to try track down what it is
Good luck

it depends. some days i am able to get 65% after 16 hours of little usage everything still turned on and some days the battery loses charge very quickly in standby if i am in an area going in and out of reception as it struggles to get bars. just check the battery stats and if maps is using a lot of battery then i would recommend turning off location reporting. also, you can try juicedefender to automatically turn off connectivity when the screen is off but it can be kind of annoying but it works well
Keep in mind, the display area of the Nexus 4 is 72.37% larger than an iPhone 4.

Um... that's a bit annoying. I have already turned off GPS (location service). I would expect this late 2012 phone to be at least at par with my 2+ years old iPhone 4 in terms of battery. But now, the 2 year plus Crapple phone seems to be winning the race.
Really love all of the Nexus 4, just that the battery life is putting me a bit off... ;-(
It's a manufacturer's defect with some Nexus 4s that prevents the OS from going into deep sleep mode. I know this because I've had 12 separate Nexus 4s in my possession now. A good unit will remain at 100% for 3+ hours of nothing but deep sleep with the exception of turning on the screen a few times to check battery percentage. A bad unit will drain 20+% in the same time.
The good news is I hear a fix is on its way from Google.

This looks pretty normal.
At best on mobile data you can expect about 10% battery drain per 25-30min of screen on time.
With WiFi, 35-40min of screen on time per 10% battery.
That's been my experience at least.

Do you mean that Google is putting together a software fix?? that mean it's a software glitch? but why would you have different battery drainage experience if all those hardware are running same software?
But if it is hardware defect of manufacturer, how can a Google fix it with an update?

OP, your battery drain is normal unfortunately. This phone doesn't do well when the screen is on, while on 3G. Most people can get 3-4 hours of screen on time at best on 3G. You're at 86% after 23 minutes, which equates to about 2.74 hours of screen on time. Unfortunately that's probably pretty accurate. Especially if your brightness is higher than 10%. My Galaxy Nexus used to do a little bit better, and reportedly the S3 does a lot better on 3G.
Not H or 3G data but, impressive nevertheless. Root & unlock your phone, flash rasbean (rom) & matr1x (kernel) and enjoy the benefits.
Also, put phone on 2g if you don't surf the web. Much easier on the battery.

I have been trying to find a solution to my problem from quite sometime now.
When ever the battery percentage goes below 30% it suddenly drops to 15% and shuts off the phone in 10seconds or so. It happens very quickly.
I don't think this is due to some software as i have tried almost all stock roms as well as custom roms.

Hello,
I've had my GS8 for less than a year now and during the past few weeks I've noticed a weird behavior going on with my battery.
When the battery goes around 15% it then drains these 15 remaining % really fast in around 5 mins.
I've been wondering if any one had seen this problem, and if some of you know if it's a software or hardware related problem.
Thanks for you answer

I would always recommend charging at 20% or higher on these devices any ways

Yeah I'm trying to keep the battery as healthy as possible but some days I just can't have it line up perfectly ^^
I'll see how it turns out in the future anyway
