Hey guys. It's been awhile since I've rooted my phone, and the only thing keeping me from flashing a new ROM was the fact that I intended to return my current Hero for one that wouldn't get dust under the screen (I have some in the lower left hand corner). Well, I've decided I'm either too lazy to go return it or I just don't care that much anymore. So, I would like to get a new ROM now In your opinion, what would be the fastest ROM right now, that is the most stable? Keep in mind, I do NOT want to use Apps2SD (I only have a Class 2 card). I also would like to eventually add those optimized APK's that have been zipaligned in the future, and I want a lock screen that is clear (displays carrier/time text though... I've seen one around somewhere), and I want a clear notifications pull-down. The only thing I've been paying attention to right now has been getting 2.0/2.1 on our phones, so I've lost track of all the ROM's that were made (maybe someone can sticky the ones BESIDES MoDaCo's?), so that's why I'm asking for your help.
Also, I've made a nandroid backup, and of course, rooted. Is there anything else I would have to do to flash a new ROM?
Thanks so much guys!
Fresh's 1.0 is my favorite
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584032
or his main site here: http://geekfor.me/
If you run the delock mod, it will remove the lock icon and make it clear:
http://bit.ly/delock
There is a known message app issue, make sure to run this update as well:
http://bit.ly/freshmsgpatch
Other than that, the apps are already zipaligned, just update via recovery.
Alright, that's pretty much what I needed to hear Thanks so much! Oh, and it doesn't have Apps 2SD right?
it does have apps2sd, but only uses it if your sd card has a EXT2/3 partition
i used fresh 1.0 as well. no complaints. however the new 2.1 rom looks tempting.

your welcome
you don't have to restore to stock or anything, just run the install after making a backup and your existing settings/data will stay intact.
I'm not using apps2sd and running it just fine.
I think you can set it up if you prefer it, but I didn't want to.
so the option is there I believe if you do ever want it

yeah it does, but I'm waiting until they get accelerometer and multi-touch working, I ran the install when it was first posted and like what I see, but I need a solid phone, lol
Oh, and this is REALLY noobish, and forgive me for not searching... but do I have to rename the ROM to update.zip?
Oh, and this is REALLY noobish, and forgive me for not searching... but do I have to rename the ROM to update.zip?
EDIT
Ok so I just watched a video on how to flash a new ROM for the HTC Hero (Euro)... do I have to Wipe Data if I'm installing Fresh ROM? Or can I just go ahead with Apply sdcard: update.zip?
no, just select choose zip

You shouldn't have to. Just load the zip onto your sd card and nandroid has an option to choose which zip file you want to install..

I don't know why this double posted.
Ok wait, so it is a NO to having to rename the ROM to update.zip, but what about about Wiping Data first? Do I have to do that or can I just skip that and flash it?

No, just flash over what you have now. It *should* work just fine.
to be honest, I can't recall.
try it without first, if it never boots all the way and sticks,, then power off and wipe data through recovery.
Ok, thanks And then if anything bad happens, all I have to do is Reboot back into the recovery, and then press Wipe Data? Sounds good. Oh, and I should probably put my nandroid backup on my sdcard.

your backup from recovery is on your sdcard, that's where mine are.
I make a backup of that to my laptop from time to time just to be safe.
have fun!

Hey
I just got a update OTA however if I check i still have 2.1 JI6 Eclair
I dont kno what that update was but i kno alot of people have Froyo
I want to flash a rom .. but do i need froyo to use bionix v by team whiskey?
since i have eclair i have to use the bionix for 2.1 or update to Froyo right??
How would I update to Froyo.
No, it's actually better that you don't have stock Froyo on you, you can flash any 2.2 ROM straight from Eclair.
which kernel should i get with it?
ka7 with voodoo..
i want the voodoo and rom to optimize productivity
Go with [ROM] Trigger, I've been on it for a few weeks now and by far the most stable and reliable ROM I have tried, the latest is blazing fast + I added Over Stock to it and now my phone wants to fly off my hands.
Download RomManager from market and flash your recovery, you'll see the option.
Then flash the rom thru recovery and you are a happy camper.
Oh, yes, it comes with Voodoo as you wished.
Sorry, forgot the link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=921453
thanks bro
..
well i have titanium backup set with everything backedup
but if i use trigger applying those setting would be dumb?
sry newb , ive been tryin to research for awhile
nm dumb question i think
i will have it and have my settings
You don't want to load any setting that you backed up from a different ROM, it will conflict the new one. When you flash, use these procedures to grant you a clean flash:
Download ...........zip and place on your sdcard
Boot into recovery and Wipe Data/Factory Reset Before You Move On
Flash .................zip
While still in recovery: Wipe Cache Partition, and inside the advanced menu: Wipe Dalvik Cache and Fix Permissions - Do Not Factory Reset Again
Reboot
After about 10 minutes, you should reboot again.
Done!

You just restore those from TB after re-boot. Make sure you only restore user apps though.
Dev. Do not recommend restoring apps on their roms since it might bring the bugs to you

Just re-download them, that way it is sure they will work propperly.

You just make a batch in TB. So in TB just go menu>settings>batch> then RUN the batch the says "Backup all user apps". Devs only recommend you don't restore system data. User apps or third party apps are ok, atleast I do everytime.

Do the option "re-install packages", if it brings you back to recovery after that, hit it again and it will take you to CWM.
If non of the above works, consider this:

You might be already, but the NOOB guide an awsome thing to follow when rooting and flashing. Its got all the step by steps for first timers! I used it religously the first time. haha It should stickied in this forum, not sure though.

um if u delete the apk's and you do a system wipe, it bricks your device. still, could u boot into CWM even if the main OS (android) is bricked?

Yes you can in fact, back up in cwm before you delete system stuff and you can respite your system from there.our if you didn't back up, you can still bit in to cwm and flash a clean rom
Isn't the only way to brick it by deleting the boot partition in recovery without an operational system partition installed? Or does cwm not have an option to self terminate? Ie "I cannot self terminate" ( Said in ahnold shwatzenhagga voice)

Nah.. that's just going to wipe your kernel and OS side boot image out. You'll still have CWM and the ability to install a new rom. In fact, the device will likely boot into recovery without a valid boot image though i wouldn't test it!
On the amon recovery app used on the evo 4g phones, you normally would wipe both system and boot before a new rom is installed.. CWM just doesn't get that in depth with wiping options as it should.
Check this out for some very good reference...

We're comin from a pure power source.
I forgot to put the new Rom on my phone I was going to flash but did not notice until I wiped everything with a wipe all type of zip and was ready to flash for some reason I could only get to recovery and had to restore with a nandroid back up I don't know why I couldnt just boot up and go back to the Rom I was running anyhow my point is thank god for nandroid back ups

Even if you wiped everything in your recovery, you would have mounted the sd card through recovery, loaded the rom on there, and then flashed it. No need to restore a backup. You do not have to have a rom on there to be able to access the sd card.

I assume you weren't near a computer, because you can still mount the SD card in Mass Storage mode in recovery, to copy over whatever you needed to flash . . .

You only have one ROM zip on your SD card at a time?! (I have the last ROM flashed and a stock ROM)
But I've done what you did and nandroid back ups are good.
On my S3 and S2 there where a few super wipe zip files that would factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik and clear all kernel settings.
This was handy for flashing roms since you would flash this via recovery and you would be good to go to install your rom
Is there such a script for the S4 cause I have been looking for a while with no luck.
I dont want to use the ones for the S3 in case they are not compatible
Thanks

I'm not saying it's hard just when you flash a rom a day it adds up. Plus if using twp you simply need to add to the queue and then the rom and your done.
Also it avoids forgetting something for a clean install
Just asking that's all

TWRP has a 1 step wipe procedure....slide the bar is all you do. 2 seconds.
sliding that bar does this...
factory reset, wipe cache and dalvik and clear all kernel settings.
That is why you can't find a wipe script, btw, I looked yesterday for you, was going to post a link, never seen one for g4 actually.

I would love to use TWRP full time but it dosnt support vr themes and I know that will be an issue down the road with ROMs. I don't want to have to follow the zip aline procedure mentioned by teamw every time I download a ROM

The VrTheme engine may require that, but the maker of the actual theme, incorporated the fix, I have flashed 2 of these themes already using TWRP.

But it varies from one theme maker to another. If the maker dosnt put the fix then it wont work. Some may make the themes without the fixes.
